We’ve seen Newcastle try to play good attacking football since Steve McClaren took over the side, and his appointment no doubt helped to attract good players like Wijnaldum, Mitrovic and Mbemba to the club this summer.
McClaren’s philosophy is to play the ball from defense into attack quickly, as we saw when Newcastle scored the second goal on Sunday, with Cisse playing the ball quickly forward to Gabby Obertan, who put in a terrific right wing cross for Wijnaldum to brilliantly head the ball home – that was an excellent goal from Newcastle.
McClaren and Simpson on Sunday
Assistant coach Paul Simpson was doing some of the interview duties yesterday, as Steve McClaren was in Stockton celebrating his son Josh getting 4 A levels, and qualifying to go to Northumbria University in Newcastle to study psychology starting soon.
Paul Simpson talked about how Newcastle want to play under McClaren:
“We’ve got some very, very talented players. The philosophy will be to play football.” “We don’t want to take stupid risks, but if it’s on to play, we want to play.”
“We also want to attack, and when we get in that final third, we don’t want to be pretty-pretty, tappy-tappy football.”
“We need to get balls in the box, get bodies in the box and score goals.” “We prided ourselves on the work we did at Derby County when we were very high scorers in the division in both seasons.”
“We’ve got to try to rise to that challenge at this next level in the Premier League, which is going to be tough.”
“But we’ve got to be in a position where we can get enough goals to achieve what we want to do this season.”
“The players have been superb – absolutely fantastic.” “They’re coming in with a smile on their face and doing everything we’ve asked of them.”
“At the end of the season when we missed out on the play-offs at Derby, it was difficult.” “Then all of a sudden things changed.” “Steve lost his job and we came into here.
“It’s a great opportunity. We’re going to do everything we can to make it a success.”
It seems that the strategy is to get forward quickly from defense, and when we get in the box not to mess around (like a certain team in London who play in red and white often do), but to get the ball in the back of the net as quickly as possible.
If we can get a good defense together, and we can also start to score some goals we should do quite well this season.
That’s the hope.
Howay The Lads!!

Its not that Obertan is awful, its that he frustrates you into thinking he is awful. Hope that makes sense.
I mean he clearly has something to be in the PL, and for Man Utd to actually go and buy him.
YET he has all this pace and simply does not use it. He loses the ball to often aswell. I mean he has the ability to damage the other team but rarely fulfills his full potential in doing so.
His pace is king, YET he refuses to go beyond players. Even on Sunday the assist was not him running around a player, it was the ball from Cisse making him run onto it.

So long as Tuff doesn’t arrest me or wrap me up in a Bayeux tapestry proclamation, whatever that is! I’ll check my fixture list. Some matches I have to shoot straight from Yorkshire and I’m lucky if I reach my seat by 3pm. Depends on whether my son is playing home or away and whether he’s fit or injured.

I agree. David Silva does not have super pace, but his movement does not require it. De Jong is similar in that he has a football brain allowing him to move into positions that can damage the opposition.
Hes strong in the air, and on the ground in front of goal.
I am not saying he is Silva quality, but he is still a very good player. I think his injury, and as I said it is not a football injury its more serious than that, has affected him clearly and he is still recovering.
I think pre season has helped him gain some muscle etc back, and I think he will make a good few people on this blog eat their own words given the chance.
Alot of people jump to conclusions in extreme circumstances. I mean Sunday he came on with less than 10 mins to go and we could not even get the ball to him or Mitrovic. It is hardly his fault.
I am confident he will be a strong player this season for the club. I know injuries dictate that but he was never a injury prone player in the past and I am hoping last season, mixed with the serious non football illness is a one off.

give the lad a chance mate that’s all I am saying. He cannot be judged on his first season although he shone in pre season the summer he signed.
As for sunday yes he looked rusty but we were on the backfoot and hanging on for the draw in all honesty.
At least give him a season to prove himself bud, And if the same problems with his health persist I will quite happily stand corrected

The Watford game I’ll be lucky to make the K.O. because I’ll be doing the Yorkshire dash, but I will be free afterwards. For the Chelsea game, my boy’s playing at Cardiff but because the Chelsea game is a late K.O., I might try to take both games in with a dash from Wales. Either way I’ll be available afterwards.

I’m all for giving someone a chance. I’m not writing him off. I listen to opinions like yours as you’ve seen more of him. I’m just saying a bit of hard graft and effort as a substitute is not too much to ask, even from the biggest stars, especially when it’s fitness he needs and in all honesty, he’s not providing anything special for the team at the moment.

yes I agree in the 10 minutes he came on for when our backs were against the wall and we were mainly defending, Then yes SDJ showed very little. But neither did Mitro for that matter.
I think Siem de jong is the most underrated dutch player around. He has always been known for his hard work, and was the complete architect of Ajax’s midfield. as they have said in the past….”.A jack of all trades master of none”.
But a shining light of versatility that every team needs

Comment #133I see Jose Enrique is being encouraged to leave the bindippers, as stacked as we are at left back I still think it’s a position we could strengthen, haidaras good going forward but is poor defensively.

Actually he is not shit.He is not excellent either.
we can’t judge him fully atm realistically because we haven’t seen him playing much, but the way we see his pace and work rate in his sub appearances,he looked slow and weak player, brings a doubt whether he will cut it in PL.To be fair,i agree with Bruni above.I felt exactly like him about siem.He should be a sub player unless he bring something new!!

Comment #136SDJ is a really good player, however against pacey sides like Swansea and Arsenal he is pretty much infective, he hasn’t the pace or time to put his skills to use a part from set plays.

I would put past differences aside and have Enrique back. Dummet, Taylor and Lascelles could then fight over the CB places.

Comment #140Not everybody will agree with me, but personally i think the pelle goal was a goal of pure quality. The cross was top quality. Now the header, ppl are forgetting pelle is a big lad, he’s about 6’4, with the massive leap that resulted in the goal, he must have been about 7 foot in the air. Sound accurate as considering he was about a foot higher than both Janmaat & colo, who are both about 6 foot.
As mcclaren said himself, they weren’t in the game at all at that point, it was there first attack. Only way to stop that goal was cut out the cross. Once that cross is made, Barcelona & madrid couldn’t stop pelle from scoring.

I agree that Pelle scored a great goal and I’m glad that that fixture is out of the way now and we managed to grab a point!
However, I think our second goal, Wijnaldum, assisted by Obertan’s cross, was better! For a fraction of a second, I thought I was watching highlights of the Newcastle vs Barca match, got a real sense of déjà vu! That game was a real classic 🙂 Anyway, back to the present. It was a brilliant goal by us and I would hope for something similar tomorrow if we could be so lucky.
Howay the lads! 🙂
