Newcastle Reported Close To Signing French Winger

11:47 pm, Saturday, August 15th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 112 Comments

There’s a report in the Mirror today that the paper is calling an exclusive.  that Newcastle will be signing long term target Florian Thauvin of Marseilles this coming week.

But after watching the 2-0 defeat at Swansea on Saturday afternoon, Newcastle’s defense is sill the big weakness,  and we need to bring reinforcements in over the next couple of weeks.

florian thauvin

Florian Thauvin – coming to Newcastle?

The Mirror report says nothing particularly new, other than they understand Newcastle are very close to getting a deal with Marseilles to sign the player, who we have been after for a few years now.

If previous news is to be believed then Newcastle have had a bid of £12M turned down by his club, and Marseilles want £15M.

The Mirror is reporting that Thauvin wants to join Newcastle, and that has helped in Newcastle’s pursuit of the player.

We assume a deal can be struck at a price somewhere between £12M and £15M, and the deal is said to be done this coming week.

There will be doubts among Newcastle fans after today’s failings in the first half at Swansea where again we conceded far too easily, and there was indiscipline in the side with Daryl Janmaat being sent off for two yellow cards in the 41st minute.

It brought back memories of John Carver’s short but disastrous reign on Tyneside this year, and that’s not good.

But it would be wrong to over-react to one game – and it’s only our second game of the season.

The fact the team we drew 2-2 with last week – Southampton – were beaten 3-0 at home by Everton didn’t help things either.

We all have to wait until we get a lot more games played,  before we can see how good the team is that Steve McClaren is trying to build.

But one thing is clear, we need more players brought in before September 1st.

Comments welcome.

    Waste of money no thanks.

  • 2 Belfast // Aug 15, 2015 at 11:50 PM

Could maybe understand it if he had a good season but he was crap.

  • 3 lochinvar // Aug 15, 2015 at 11:51 PM

Well that’s good news I think but hardly a surprise.
And if Austin or Rolan turned up they wouldn’t be surprises either.
So McLaren where is the much promised Surprise ? In a Kinder egg. ?

Hope he is better than the other Frenchies we have already.

  • 5 Belfast // Aug 15, 2015 at 11:53 PM

Stan according to the blog chat he was world class. Watched him last season expecting him to be brilliant and he was piss poor. Haha

  • 6 stan anderson // Aug 15, 2015 at 11:55 PM

Happy days supporting the TOON haha.50 years at least and still the same old stories nothing changes.

  • 7 Bri // Aug 15, 2015 at 11:57 PM

Is he better than Obertan? Is he as good as Ginola once was?

  • 8 stan anderson // Aug 15, 2015 at 11:58 PM

God bless you all.I give up now.

  • 9 banjax // Aug 15, 2015 at 11:59 PM

Nothing wrong with Flauvin. God knows we have been tracking him long enough. Would expect us to sign two more defenders though, a midfield and a forward before the window shuts. No doubt there will be a few leaving too. Let’s hope we get all the business wrapped up soon because all the newbies will need time to get acquainted.

  • 10 Geordiedoonsooth // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:00 AM

We need a CB and Forward not another winger

A HUGE question mark continues to hang over the future of Chelsea club doctor Eva Carneiro after it emerged she was absent from a key meeting with the club’s medical staff called by Jose Mourinho on Thursday to discuss the future strategy with regard to injured players.

Clearly she needs to resign and claim constructive dismissal and sue the hell out of Chelsea and their little minded manager.
Now can she be our surprise signing ? Could even be part time and work at the RVI as well .

  • 12 toon kk // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:00 AM

He looks a light weight, just more speculation anyway.

  • 13 Mister Tuff // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:02 AM

The niftiest footwork so far this season has been from ol permed hair. not playing in any of the pre season games – to allow him to be assessed correctly. As such Wally probably didn’t realise he’s going downhill – and was blagged into giving him an extension.
Very poor display today -even before Janmaat was sent off. The warning bells have been sounded and there’s a fortnight to the end of the widow – will they buy or gamble.
Personally think they’ll get another two -of what standard who knows.

Don’t think we need anymore untested starlets.

Newcastle have something like the seventh or eighth most valuable squad and wage bill. No way should this group of players and coaches find themselves in the bottom third. We’ve had decent players year in year out, but lacked depth.

This squad looks better equipped on paper, but we do have a LOT of players who remain unproven. Cabella, Aarons, Obertan, Haidarra, Dummett, Mitrovic, Perez, De Jong, Mbemba, Riviera, Wijnaldum, Anita are not accomplished in the EPL. That’s a massive group, and of the established players, there are a number with injury and consistency concerns.

The club does take risks in the transfer market, banking on young and untested but gifted players. I like the look of the players we have, but they come with no guarantees, which of course does indicate that it all going to hell in a hand basket is still possible.

We need some established bankable signings, if we do elect to buy further.

  • 16 Offkey // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:05 AM

Lochinvar- she will have to do it quickly…..or at least be kicking up a stick internally with grievances or she will have been seen to have accepted the apparent breach of contract……Therefore no constructive dismissql

  • 17 Polarboy // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:08 AM

For those complaining what would you rather, him or Obertan. From what I’ve seen he’s decent on set pieces and that’s what we need.

  • 18 BeeGuy // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:08 AM

We need Mbemba II and somebody with more attacking and passing threat than Colbeck or Anita.
There are some very good players in this squad, and if they were augmented this window, things could be hopping.

  • 19 SuperShearer // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:10 AM

Lot of overreacting here. We lost away to a team that will probably challenge for Europe this season. We had a man sent off in the first half. Does our defence need work? Yes, we’ve known it a long time but it’s needed work since as long as I can remember. In fact I can’t remember a time when NUFC didn’t need better defenders. We had a terrible pre-season and there was little anyone could do about it. They need to bring in a decent, commanding centre back and if they do then it will be a good window and a promising season. Give it some time, we always knew it was going to be a tough start with these fixtures.

  • 20 toon22 // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:10 AM

CBs that cant defend headers,FBs that cant stop them coming in.
Strikers that are mental or simply not interested.
A DM thats not upto it

  • 21 Ravostag // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:13 AM

We need defenders not wingers or strikers. We probably do as well but not as vital as as a CB or FB

  • 22 Magpie Season // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:14 AM

Well I didn’t think as a Newcastle United supporter it was possible to hate Sunderland even more, but I bet $30 for them to win on a draw no bet mind, at very good odds still.

    They deserve to be relegated.

  • 24 toon kk // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:15 AM

  • 25 tooneytunes // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:16 AM

  • 26 Belfast // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:18 AM

Divock Origi has been named by L’Equipe in their “worst Ligue 1 team” of the season for 2014/15. Origi has an average rating of 4.46 for the season, and the Belgian forward, along with Marseille’s Florian Thauvin, was also named in the list of most overrated players this season in Ligue 1.

  • 27 toon22 // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:19 AM

Colo will face a whole season with opposition strikers out jumping him.
He needs moving to DM or the bench.
If he is going to stay as a CB he needs FBs stopping the crosses.

  • 28 Belfast // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:20 AM

Not someone you should be paying 12-15 million for in my opinion. Especially when the premier league is far superior as Remy Cabella found out.

  • 29 croftus5678 // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:20 AM

janmaat had a very poor game today !
so did hairdryer as he’s not the best defender is he ?
colo also was poor but we all pretty much know this anyways.

what i did notice though was krul ! his lack of coming out as he could/should have easily come out and caught the ball for one of the goals ! which got me thinking is he a major factor in our very leaky defence from headed goals ?

time for darlow/elliott to have a run i think to put my mind at ease and mbemba is clearly our best cb now we need someone to go with him now ! every other team in the league can concede less and that includes the champ’s sides.

  • 30 toon kk // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:24 AM

Ive been saying that we need pace for a long time. We’re so predictable and the whole team is so limited

  • 31 Polarboy // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:25 AM

@Belfast. He still managed to score 5 and set up 8 so if that’s a bad season for him he can’t be that bad. There’s been a lot of unrest at Marseilles and he is generally well rated by most.

  • 32 Bri // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:29 AM

When you are playing one upfront Cisse is not the answer.
You need someone who is strong, gets stuck in, can hold the ball up,bring others into play, has pace and is able to beat a man. That’s my idea of a lone striker.

  • 33 toon kk // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:33 AM

  • 34 Offkey // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:34 AM

Don’t know much about the guy….Dennis wise scouting only, so can’t properly judge, what I saw was that he may well be used as an inverted winger…….sick of those now, want some good crosses that hit mitrovic”s head

Someone mentioned Gillespie the other day….I would take a carbon copy……even with the falling over every time

  • 39 jimmysmith // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:38 AM

I also think we need to get Tiote, De Jong, Aarons, Peres, Cabella and Mitrovic more game time too, to get them match fit, to increase compettiion for places and instil some urgency into a side that does need to find another gear.

  • 40 dean021082 // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:39 AM

    We need not panic.
Two games in and let’s be fair, we expected to lose against a quality Swansea side away and last weeks point against a top 8 side was welcomed. It is going to be 8 teams such as Watford, Leicester, west Brom, Norwich, and Sunderland we will be expected to beat to stay in the league. I can see some of our players coming good in the next wife’s weeks such as Cabella who potentially is quality on the ball, wij and De Jong will give us the creativity we need and cisse goals record speaks for it self.
We need to stick with Mbemba and try Williamson for his heading ability. Play Anita at left back and go flat 4222′ sissoko and colback sitting with De Jong and Wij playing the number 10 roles. Cisse up top with either Cabella or Perez tip toeing around him. We will finish 8-12 but let’s not panic.

  • 41 Polarboy // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:42 AM

@Offkey. Well he’s left footed and if I had to guess the left is where we will be playing him if we sign him.

  • 42 SkankyDog // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:45 AM

Either they they are on a different Planet or I am,

Our defense is leaking goals and they still think buying mid-fielders is the way to go.

  • 43 dean021082 // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:45 AM

Just watched the full game and it is clear.
The team needs the basic coaching drills, such as pass and move, 1 and 2 touch football, press in triangles and play in triangles. We are some slow to play compared to all the other teams I have seen in the first two weeks. SM needs to address the foundations of these so called professional players before we start playing exciting football. Today felt like we wait for one or two opportunities to create something and that’s all we do. Unlike Swansea who build play every time the win the ball.
Basic coaching drills so everyone knows their jobs and are not just interested to staying away from the ball so they don’t cock up.

We looked so poor I didnt know wat to comment. We had no MOM. it was such a very bad day at the office. Even Mcca was bad with his decisions. It was so bad all over want to forget today.

  • 45 sickandtired // Aug 16, 2015 at 12:57 AM

@Dean – are you posting drunk, or just a moron? Williamson’s heading ability? Hahahahaha!
Hate to point it out but it looks like SDJ is a bigger sick note than Owen – he now has a crocked shin.
Panic away, boys and girls as this side is no better than last seasons. Schteeve was never the right man – but the right man would never come here under the current regime.
We need at least another 5 new players. No change.

  • 46 Our Toon // Aug 16, 2015 at 1:03 AM

You all rightly slate the defence but about about the 2 central enforcers? Anita and Colback, utter shite. I said I didn’t like there performance last week especially against mane and against Swansea they were schooled by Shelvey. How anyone can allow shelvey so much space like colback did for the 1st goal is just unbelievable.

Doesn’t matter how good or poor you are defensively if you allow good players to space and time to pick passes then you’ll ultimately lose like we did today. The defence is pants but Anita and Colback aren’t much better

  • 47 Magpie Season // Aug 16, 2015 at 1:12 AM

“We need to try Williamson for his heading ability.”

    Mate that is comedy gold.

  • 48 Bri // Aug 16, 2015 at 1:17 AM

I like Shelvey, composed and sprays the ball about well.
The type of player i wouldn’t mind at NUFC.

  • 49 jimmysmith // Aug 16, 2015 at 1:32 AM

Yeah, I wonder a little about the Anita and Colback central mdifield pairing. Tiote and Wijnaldum in tandem with De Jong does seem intuitively the better set up, with Anita and Colback as cover, not just in midfield but also as fullbacks.

  • 50 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 16, 2015 at 1:32 AM

Mcclaren didn’t learn any lesson today? That’s surprising. He got outclassed by Monk.

Also, major error is Anita and colback sitting so deep that Swansea midfield had all the time in the world to pass around and find Montero…

And Gomis link up play was outstanding. Hope Mitrovic can learn a thing or two from him.

  • 51 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 16, 2015 at 1:59 AM

After watching the game last night I immediately thought “what we need is another flaky French winger”. We don’t need a decent centre back, we don’t need a proper defensive mid, or a genuine playmaker. We don’t need cover at full-back, and we don’t need a goalkeeper who is actually going to put pressure on Krul for his spot. We need another overrated, good for nothing, show-pony Frenchman. Any wally can see that….

  • 54 Blofal // Aug 16, 2015 at 2:22 AM

  • 55 Novocastrian66 // Aug 16, 2015 at 2:26 AM

I would get rid of Sissoko. Absolute shite. He is a big and powerful, but he doesn’t have a heart. Cisse is another who I would not be sorry to see leave.

  • 56 Our Toon // Aug 16, 2015 at 2:42 AM

Yes excellent idea, let’s get rid of 1st players. A squad that’s already short on quality let’s deplete it even further by getting rid of them 2.

Will getting rid of sissoko and Cisse help us prevent conceding? Will it help wee jack to have an impact in midfield along with the piss poor Anita.

  • 57 jimmysmith // Aug 16, 2015 at 2:42 AM

Players like Sissoko, Cisse, Krul, Colback, Tiote, Collocini and Taylor, all have question marks surrounding them, but they are also key, because they are the players with EPL experience. Like it or not the majority will play, which is a bit of a concern, unless McClaren can get them into a higher gear consistently. You can’t go in without experience in this league, and expect to do well.

  • 58 Our Toon // Aug 16, 2015 at 2:45 AM

Ian Wright on motd last night spoke about Rooney and said he had 44 touches of the ball and not a single touch in the opposition box. He pointed out that man utd are struggling to score goals because Rooney isn’t a no9, he needs to be in the box to score not linking up play deeper!!

  • 59 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 16, 2015 at 2:45 AM

Front three should be Perez and Aarons on either side of Mitrovic. Bet it won’t be though. Would love to know where the wally thinks our wins are going to come from, assuming we’ll continue to concede 2 or 3 goals a game.

We were lucky that Ki the Korean was not in the squad to pull strings for Swam or we will be dead meat.

Its still the midfield for me. If we can score a goal.
They can have 5-0 or 6-0.

Can we created and score a goal? Ye, we can! We have got a finisher, we have a goal scorer in the team.

    Do we have CREATOR?

    Do we have a Lampard?
    Do we have a Gerrard?
Do we have a Shelvey? / (Ki and good)
    Do we have a Hazard?

We need some someone of this mold. Do we have it in the squad?

Who can play the Rooney role?

Can he create? Have you seen him spraying passes? How was his passing ability? Have you watch how he pass a ball?

SDJ? ..we just got to be patient and see..(my last hope for a quality player)

Hope those questions answered you own doubts.

I know I may get flak for this post but think we need to loan out Satka think he needs to learn the physicality it will take to defend but was impressed by his eye to pass out the back and think it is what we are trying to become needs to learn through trial and error but def like the way he always looked to make passes on floor think Arma will def be coming back to us a better player for his season at Coventry too so let’s keep the momentum going

  • 65 brklyngeordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 4:32 AM

  • 68 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 6:48 AM

In the cold light of a sober day, that was still very poor. Communication/lack of organisation and naivety cost us there. Mbemba is far too keen to go to ground, still early days, so would be harsh to criticise too much. Really not sure what Mbemba was thinking going to ground for the first goal. He stays on his feet and Gomis has a much more difficult task. He goes to ground again for the second goal, but Colo should be making it much harder for Ayew when the cross comes in.

Really can’t stress enough how important it is for us to get in a vocal centre half that can bring the back line together, rather than them playing as 4 individuals.

They dominated the game from start to finish, we were second best long before Janmaat got sent off. Can’t really complain about the result, but it shows that there is still a long way to go. At least Mitrovic gave us presence and intent late on, but the game was long dead as a contest by then.

Southampton were poor against Everton, were they that bad against us last week?

  • 69 nut meg // Aug 16, 2015 at 6:54 AM

I don’t want to be too critical but, that performance was 100% pure undiluted diarrhea ! Today we are reported to be close to signing Florian Thauvin & soccer sauce says we have opened talks with PSV about Jetro Willems. True or not it doesn’t matter. What does matter is the job of getting the priority’s right. Our priority is the defence or lack of it.If we are putting Thauvin as a more urgent need above a tall, commanding, vocal, organizer, top quality CB then we ARE building on sand. Why would anyone spend 50m (?) on a house with nothing to support the walls or the roof??? Is it even possible to make our needs more obvious ?? Shakes head !

  • 70 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:01 AM

On the plus side, another good weekend for Arma, 4 goals in 2 games is a great start.

  • 71 hibbit // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:04 AM

same problems as we ended last season with we cannot defend

  • 72 nut meg // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:10 AM

Yes, young Arma has made a grand start at Coventry,I hope he carries the good form right the way through his loan spell. His confidence must be pretty high atm…good luck to the boy.

  • 73 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:13 AM

    nut meg,
It was pretty poor. I was expecting to lose, possibly sneak a draw, but based on comments after the last match I was expecting us to put up more of a fight. I saw very little to praise yesterday.

Mitrovic has to start ahead of Cisse next match. Cisse offered so little and Mitro put in a few hard yards and attempted to put the defence under pressure. He needs to channel his aggression better, but he will cause defenders problems.

I hope we see Perez, Mitro and Aarons as the attacking trio against Man U, if Sissoko is injured then it just makes sense – although I think it makes sense even when Sissoko is fit….

  • 74 Mag52 // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:16 AM

Mitrovic’s cameos in the two matches so far have certainly shown good intent and enthusiasm. He’s on the edge of picking up a red all the time though, and unless someone has a strong word in his ear it would be a brave manager to start him in his present state of mind.

  • 75 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:22 AM

Yeah, partly. Colo and Janmaat should no better, but Mbemba wasn’t convincing either. I’m more convinced that Mbemba is young now as it was total naivety to try and win that ball through for the opening goal. If we had someone who can organise that back line, they would/should have been talking to Mbemba there. Other than that Mbemba was okay, but he needs help.

They weren’t helped by the midfield who were poor from start to finish mind. Anita made some good interceptions yesterday, and was better than Colback, but neither covered themselves in glory.

On the plus side, it is still early days and this start isn’t totally surprising given the fixtures, and the poor pre season that we had. A lot of work needs doing, and it is further evidence that they have to buy.

Rumours we are in talks with Psv about willems (lb) he did put a tweet out whilst flying over to watch our game against Southampton ” flying to the future”.

If not Willems I would go for a 1 year contract for Ashley Cole he is very fit and has another year in him maybe two.

Man U away then a cup game at home will give some players a bit more game time for us to judge and a chance for Mitrovic and De Jong.

  • 77 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:25 AM

You think he was close to a red yesterday? If he was it would have been very harsh I think. He has come on at poor times in both the games so far, and has had little opportunity to do anything of note.

I think he needs to start the next match. Cisse just didn’t do enough yesterday to warrant a starting place next week.

  • 78 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:29 AM

When DJ got sent off, it pretty much wrote off the game, and I wouldn’t even really bother over-analysing the performance. It was stupidity on his part, and as it happened so early there was little chance of getting anything from the game from then on, especially away from home.

  • 79 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:30 AM

Same old same old how can the powers that be managers, coachers etc.,m not see we have a Sh*t defence.
    last season 63 conceded
    season before 59 conceded
To build a good football team you need to start with the foundations a good goal keeper and a good back four
    and we have niether
Instead of buying forwards and midfield players
they should by a new complete back FIVE
Any opposition manager worth his salt knows how to exploit the TOONS weaknesses –
    i) cross into the box on or just outside the six yard box
ii)Free kicks – whip the ball in between the six yard box and penalty spot
Twice already this season the opposition have scored with headers from crosses into/edge of the six yard box and the other header was slightly further out but the cross was deep to far post. We need a keeper that commands his six yard box as teams week after week are exploiting the weakness
    Need a commanding centre half/halfs
and two full backs who can defend and tackle first and don’t get out of position time after time

    rant over

  • 80 nut meg // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:31 AM

It was a lot different than last week when we knocked the ball about and generally looked decent.I was encouraged by what I saw but yesterday was a very sun standard show even by our low standards.Southampton were decent last week but yesterday looked very heavy legged right from the start. They also missed a few chances against Everton where as they buried the ones against us…no surprise there.
I think there will be changes as SM has to give a couple of competitive games to a lot of players to gauge there ability properly.I agree with your choice of changes as Cisse, well he’s Cisse I suppose if he doesn’t score he doesn’t add anything to the game. What do you think of three at the back with Janmaart &( IF IT’S TRUE ) Willems as wing backs?

  • 81 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:33 AM

It happened in the 41st minute. We were very much second best long before that happened. Yes, the game was over with the red card, but based on the prior 40 minutes, it was probably over anyway.

  • 82 Nufc-83 // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:35 AM

Lilo Mbemba clearly not at fault for first goal as the cb should not follow St behind the line. Go is went past him he held the line and yes slid to intercept but he clearly expects him is to be offside not our idiot rb a yard behind the line playing him on. At that point even if mbemba is on his feet he would have to turn and get back to a ball Gomis ran onto its still the same goal all day!!

  • 83 Jail for Ashley // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:37 AM

Does anyone think it prophetic that two players we were heavily linked with ended up scoring both the goals. I still can’t my head round the train of thought that decided it was a better deal to pay 6M for Riverie rather than take Gomis on a free with extra wages, bearing in mind we were supposedly offering 7M plus whatever wage just a year before.

  • 84 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:39 AM

    nut meg,
Which 3 centre halves? We will have the same issues until we get someone who can organise and talk the rest of the back line through the game. Is it then 4 midfielders and 1 up top, or 3 and 2?

I really want to see Perez, Aarons and Mitro in tandem as a trio. Skill, pace, strength, aggression and goals in that group. They will cause most defences problems. You can’t play them as a trio if you switch to 3 at the back and wing backs. (obviously you can, but it leaves the midfield wide open, so you wouldn’t). I think 3 at the back poses just as many questions for what we have as it does answers at the minute.

  • 85 Nufc-83 // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:40 AM

I don’t think it’s as clear cut as that jail. Not sure what gomis was asking for but if he gets high wages it upsets the other players who are on less and depending how much they may have to offer our top earners an increase.sayjng that gomis is so much better than cisse who I would give away at the first opportunity

  • 86 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:42 AM

tell me about it mate. I basically watch and see what we consider a inflated evaluation, watch the player sign for Swansea and see him sodomise us.

    Pretty much how it goes.

Both those players should have been at Newcastle.

  • 87 Jail for Ashley // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:44 AM

I listened to the game on the radio yesterday and John Ando and Mick Martin were baffled at the decision not to play with a striker for 25 minutes, if we don’t buy any more defenders there will be more calamitous results and unfortunately for Schteve he will be the one taking the brunt of the fans frustrations.

  • 88 Jail for Ashley // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:47 AM

    Nufc 83,
Well they’ve managed to keep Gomis and the other players happy at Swansea or are they about to do a Leeds.

  • 89 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:47 AM

maybe Mc is just a Pardew upgrade!!!

  • 90 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:52 AM

No,Mbemba shouldn’t be diving in. There was no evidence to suggest they were trying to play him off side. If they were then Mbemba was deeper than Colo anyway, and the line was all over the place. He also should have just stepped, rather than going to ground if they were going for an offside trap.

Colo stepped to cut out the pass, and Mbemba dived in to try do the same thing. Lack of communication and organisation. Naive, and the wrong choice from him. Like I say, it is early days for him, and he needs help from someone who can organise the back line. Not having a go at him majorly, but it is something he needs to learn from.

  • 91 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:54 AM

So sad seeing Swansea being a Nufc of the 90’s in the 10’s today.

    What have we become….sad.

Below average side with some frustrating players with a rich boss who refuses to pay.

  • 92 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:55 AM

I have to say I was confused at the decision to bring Cisse off and Aarons on. A case of damage limitation at that point maybe, but we just invited them onto us more by not having a focal point to help move play further up field.

Again, one to hopefully learn from for McClaren.

  • 93 Slank // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:55 AM

    Jail @ 86

I watched the game and it did seem a bit odd.

When Mitrovic came on he livened things up but I’m afraid to say that if he continues on his reckless ways we will see very little of him as he will become a target by the opposition to niggle him knowing full well that he will overreact and knowing that the refs have already clocked him in their naughty book.

  • 94 Nufc-83 // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:56 AM

Not having that at all lilo mbemba expects to be last man and so does not see it as big risk.

  • 95 nut meg // Aug 16, 2015 at 7:58 AM

Yeah I know.It was just a thought to try and get some kind of defence into our defence so to speak to try and stop the headed goals from flying in. A bit of thinking out loud really.

  • 96 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:00 AM

You will never find a defensive coach telling you to go to ground in a situation like that – what he did would be criticised by most who have played that position to a decent level. If you are playing the offside trap then it is even more ridiculous.

It isn’t a major issue, but he needs to learn from it.

  • 97 Spuggy // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:01 AM

You can’t set a goal of top 8 and a good cup run then bring in a new coach with a new philosophy, back room staff, three inexperienced EPL players and hope for the best.

It’s going to take a season of transition at least. The IF the coach and players are good enough we should improve.

I still think hiadara is unproven and colo has a lot to prove this season. Whilst Williamson is not great on the ground, he is the best we have in the air and it’s showing. Another tall strong CB, LB, winger and striker who can hold the ball up required to get anywhere close to top 8.

  • 98 Jail for Ashley // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:03 AM

Unfortunately we will now see Mbemba played as RB with Taylor back in the centre, something Mclaren might stick with until Taylors inevitable break down.

  • 99 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:03 AM

    nut meg,
The defence needs someone to make them a unit, rather than 4 individuals. It may help a little, but then I think the quality of our defenders, and the fact our full backs are better offensively than defensively will cause us just as many problems. I can see the 3 centre halves being pulled all over by centre forwards who have good movement.

  • 100 Jail for Ashley // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:07 AM

There is as much chance of Ashley selling up than another CB being brought in, Collocini hasn’t been awarded the captaincy and contract extension to sit on the bench.

  • 101 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:08 AM

Yeah, back to the old tried and tested axis of Saylor/Colo or Willo/Colo. Would be a big surprise if he brought Lascelles in. Lascelles is a bit of a worry, if he isn’t able to make the bench ahead of Willo and/or Saylor, then I’m not sure what the point of keeping him around this season is. Maybe another loan spell is beckoning for him?

Anita is the only other option to Mbemba at right back. Neither is ideal. Mbemba needs to continue in the centre back role though, so I’d probably go with Anita there next week – or sign a ready made right back today/tomorrow!

  • 102 stan anderson // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:09 AM

You have to start with the defence, not wingers or strikers.
Dont concede goals and we win a point at least,is it not common sense.
Not good to watch but it is vital to have a defence torely on.

  • 103 Belfast // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:11 AM

I was always baffled about the Gomis thing too. Even if he was looking a big sign on fee, it would have been far cheaper than the 7 million they where prepared to pay for him previously.

  • 104 Slank // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:12 AM

You can set a goal of top 8 and a good cup run then bring in a new coach with a new philosophy, back room staff, three inexperienced EPL players and hope for the best.

You have to set high bars even though some of the goals look unobtainable ie top 8 finish. A cup success is more achievable as luck plays a big part.

On the assumption that the top four places are already spoken for we would have to be better than Liverpool, Spurs, Southampton, Swansea, Everton and Stoke to get even in the top 10. It currently doesn’t look achievable.

  • 105 Nufc-83 // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:13 AM

I would also drop coldback to lb as he is much better defensively than haidara. We need a cdm beast and I’m not sure tiote is the answer anymore

  • 106 lochinvar // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:15 AM

By booking Janmaat for the second time the Ref actually did something that was clearly lacking last season and that was yellow cards for fouls that broke up break out attacking play. This surely sets the precedent so we can now expect the likes of Chelski and ManUre players to be booked for cynical fouls ( which they are expert in) committed often in their own half. Will the refs be consistent ? Have the refs been told to stamp out such fouls ? Will the refs give the fouls ? Will the refs hand out yellow cards even early in a game ? Are MOD and Sky monitoring the refs performance ? So when Aarons plays and starts an attack and is pulled up by a defender ( like Janmaat did ) to stop him getting away will we see the yellow card being waved at Arsenal players ? I reserve judgement.

  • 107 stan anderson // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:15 AM

MACKEMS showed thir feelings when they left the stadium of shite in large numbers when things were looking grim.
We will just sit and watch till it is 89 and go back for more next match.
Its our weakness that the fat slug exploits to the maximum.
We cant stop ourselves from watching.

this makes no sense(if true),with the money thats being quoted we could go out and by a top cb that we desperately need.

  • 109 lochinvar // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:28 AM

    Lilongwe Geordie @90
    Really mute points.
” lack of communication ” ( in the back four) and ” someone who can organise the back line”
Don’t know if my hearing and sight are diminishing and I sit quite close to the pitch at games but I just can’t recall seeing or hearing Colo shouting the odds at the back line and making sure that they work as a unit. Other better organised teams yesterday would have all stepped out and Gomis would have been clearly offside. Colo is Captain but seems to say nothing at least compared to the Gerrards, Lampards and others of that ilk. Silence may be golden but not on the pitch. Serena Williams makes more noise than Colo – and it seems to produce results.

  • 110 Spuggy // Aug 16, 2015 at 8:30 AM

Hypocritical fools… 1 defeat n the ashley ooots are back.. I for one never accepted that £38m of signings was forgiveness… £100m maybe.. but to start calling now is just stupid. .. yeah we need a CB and a lb . But wiv colo capt I can’t see that happening unless he put Mbemba RB n Janmaat LB… I think playing 2 DMF is our down fall.. I think colback is on borrowed times especially with anita form…. SDJ???
