Nightmare Game For Newcastle Full-Back

5:42 pm, Saturday, August 15th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

The story of this game was that for 40 minutes Ecuadorian International left winger Montero was just too much for Newcastle’s Dutch International left back Daryl Janmaat, and after picking up a yellow card after only 17 minutes it was almost inevitable he would get another one as he kept fouling Montero.

And sure enough on 41 minute Montero beat him once again and Daryl pulled him back, and it was another caution and he was off.

Game over.

janmaat sent off swansea

Daryl Janmaat sent off after 41 minutes

That was the game right there, after we had gone behind when one ball from Shelvey split the Newcastle defense wide open, and Bafe Gomis scored all too easily.

To make things worse Sissoko pulled a groin muscle just before half time.

Steven Taylor came on in the second half but Ghanaian International  Andre Ayew scored with a header after 52 minutes from another Montero cross, and Swansea could have had more but thankfully it was only 2-0.

So two former Newcastle transfer targets who went to Swansea scored against us today.

On a lighter note think back to who actually played well for Newcastle and let us know who you though our best player was this afternoon.

We did start to play some good football and were even getting back into the game until Janmaat received the red card.

If this match confirmed anything its the fact we need a new Left sided central defender ASAP
    1. Abdennour
    2. Kongolo
    3. Anybody!
Not signing one equates to signing a death warrant for this team’s premier league status

  • 2 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:44 PM

Two year contract extension for Colo? Ahahahahahahahahaha! My sides are hurting, I’ll have to stop now…..

  • 3 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:44 PM

When Mitrovic is fighting fit, is he a heavy weight or super heavy weight?

  • 4 BandB // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:45 PM

    The defence is a worry.

Does anyone know how many players still on our books have scored a WINNING goal from open play in 2015?
    Including the friendlies.

  • 5 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:45 PM

Colo playing CB for us in 2017: “Colo advances slowly up the pitch with the ball. His knee brace and artificial hip seem to be giving him some bother…..”

  • 6 Nufc-83 // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:46 PM

Our toon I suggest two things.

    1) if you keep 4231 then play mitro but like you really worried about him getting sent off.

    2) if you want to keep cisse on the pitch play 2 up front even riveire with cisse would be better than cisse on his own.

  • 7 Graeme // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:46 PM

In the last 9 months, NUFC have played 15 away games!!
    Played 15
    Won 1
    Lost 12
    Drawn 2
    Goals scored 8
    Goals conceded 33

The defence is shite and only adding ONE young CB is not going to solve the problems. Collo was absolutely shocking today.

  • 8 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:47 PM

It’s a really small number isn’t it BandB mate? Come on then, don’t keep us in suspense……

  • 9 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:48 PM

a change of formation is needed, such as two upfront

    major investment is still needed

  • 10 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:48 PM

Don’t look for an apology. Colo went AWOL for the first goal last week. But he kissed Ayew for the second this week. It’s an improvement. I’m still to see the first coz the screen went blank.

  • 11 Nufc-83 // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:48 PM

But one thing is for sure if 4231 is set in stone we may aswell put cisse on the next plane out of here.

  • 12 WWSBRD // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:49 PM

Mitro wont start until he can prove he can last 5 minutes without getting a yellow…which am not sure he is capable of atm

  • 13 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:49 PM

This is no time to panic lads….. Let’s wait until after the Arsenal match…..

  • 14 Bambams // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:50 PM

It’s not all doom and gloom…

Table booked in Jesmond for 8pm

Enjoy your evening all, avoid motd

  • 15 Toon-Prodigy // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:50 PM

Very poor today and Janmaat oh dear..

Massive shock with De Jong like hahaha.

This laddy is struggling badly to get himself right, huge doubts with the lad with it working out at NUFC.

This Mitrovic needs to calm his head down, he will be a target for the refs now. Nout will go his way with his temper. The lads already got a reputation after just two sub cameos.

  • 16 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:50 PM

Nice stat Graeme mate. And our home record is frightening over that same time period as well.

  • 17 Graeme // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:51 PM

Some good comedy on Sky Sports in the morning!!!

  • 18 Ron Knee // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:52 PM

Who was our least bad player? Tough one!

  • 19 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:52 PM

Three headed goals against in 2 matches. What should that tell McLaren?

  • 20 Nufc-83 // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:53 PM

I can’t believe people slating Aaron’s though. Think he touched the ball twice one time got away and passed to haidara who let the ball roll under his foot. Other time I think he lost it but so difficult to even judge a player in them circumstances.

  • 21 BandB // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:53 PM

    I favour 4321…

That’s a formation, not the countdown to Mitrovic being booked.

  • 22 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:53 PM

Swansea are a solid outfit, so I wasn’t expecting more than a draw, however we still have some serious problems that need addressing .

Collo is finished and has been the common denominator in our dreadful defence the last few years however I don’t see him being dropped or replaced based on Mclarens comments .

If He and Haidara are in the starting 11 for the majority of this year then top 10 will be a struggle IMO .

Also if no one else comes in then Ashley has once again screwed NUFC fans over and he has done the bear minimum AGAIN and I won’t be going to St.James’ anytime soon .

  • 23 Nufc-83 // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:54 PM

Ron knee that is such a difficult question as they were all so bad. Really can’t pick one at all.

  • 24 banjax // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:54 PM

What can you say to Schteev, except I told you so and the only reason the fans haven’t gone too ballistic is that we’ve actually spent money this season, but that is where it ends. The squad is nowhere near strong enough which is no surprise – since at the end of last season it was clear we needed at least 8 quality players and I said we should be looking at least at a £80m -£90m spend and that would be just to catch up. Ok we all know it’s early in the season but some of the decisions made like playing Obertan are making the same mistakes of the past. We had targets previously like Gomis, Ayew and a list of others and we chose not to pay the extra million or two to get them. This is Newcastle’s problem – it’s called making do – and as we all know very well, making do is not good enough. There are 2+ weeks left until the end of the season to buy more quality players or if not by Xmas we will be out of all the cup competitions and a long way from a top eight finish. You can take that to the bank Mike ! – See more at:

  • 25 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:55 PM

Obertan looked our best player today

  • 26 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:55 PM

4-2-3-1 could work with Mitrovic, but not with Cisse IMO .

He may pop up with a goal, but his hold up play is none existent and we are worse of as a team .

  • 27 NUFC FOR SALE // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:56 PM

    Collo is garbage

He was finished 2 year ago

That is single handily the worst bit of transfer business this summer by any club

    He is a liability now

  • 28 Nufc-83 // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:56 PM

Big pappa you hit the nail on head

  • 29 Jib // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:56 PM

Janmaat knew he was meeting Memphis next week , food for thought !!!!!

  • 30 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:57 PM

That was pathetic Big Pappa mate. The squad is still full of dead wood. Everyone said before the summer that we needed 7 or 8 players out and 7 or 8 new ones in. We will remain a joke with Ashley.

  • 31 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:57 PM

Ashley get in Matt Phillips from QPR at least he knows how to cross a ball

  • 32 catchy in norway // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:57 PM

    wow , where to start.

huge contrast between the 2 first games , couldn’t have been more proud of the first game , ashamed of the second game,

Chancle was our bright light today ,

    Janmaat got himself sent off

    MF went totally missing

obertan had a shocker but we knew he would and the ONLY reason he stayed on was for his pace in the last 10 mins

Papis needs service , he got nothing today.

All I can say about it is it is SM first real away game , he can see for himself we need a lot of coaching , esp away from home.

    I have faith though.

  • 33 lochinvar // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:57 PM

McLaren ” we knew Montero would be a danger ” – so what was the plan to deal with him ? Foul him. ? Good thinking Batman

  • 34 firebug666 // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:57 PM

Not a lot to say that has not been said already, total shambles by a club who are suppose to be moving forward from last season. Well if that display is moving forward I would hate to see us drop back into the old ways…..Oh wait!

The buck has to stop with McClaren, he said he is happy with the team he has…..OK OK so he’s reading the same script that was given to the inept one. The fact is he put that team out there and we were totally destroyed by a very good Swansea team, Janmaat sending off did not help, but his tactical changes did nothing to improve us.

Mitrovic will have to start finding the net soon to make up for all the suspensions he is going to pick up, he is getting himself noticed by the referees and for all the wrong reasons.

Finally…. We are in trouble, big trouble, this is the same drivel we had served to us all last season….Nothing has changed!

  • 35 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:58 PM

If Obertan remains our best player we are in deep, deep trouble Take a Chancel mate…..

  • 36 Nufc-83 // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:58 PM

Not many people will agree but for me mbemba only player who looked like he could win the ball so will have to go with him I’m afraid.

  • 37 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 15, 2015 at 5:59 PM

    @ Jib

I don’t really rate Depay all that much .

Bayern’s new signing Douglas Costa was brought in for a similar price and looks twice the player Memphis is .

  • 38 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:00 PM

G2 at least Ober tried to attack and he had a very good shot saved

  • 39 Noel Worst // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:00 PM

    Team next week:

    Byram____Mbemba___Van Dijk____Robertson

  • 40 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:00 PM

We remain a deeply disturbing outfit led by a mental midget. Ashley thinks Colo can still play football!!! And so apparently do McLaren, and Carr who are both on the board!!!! Fong them I say!!!!

  • 41 WWSBRD // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:01 PM

Ok I get the excitement on Mitrovic but come on could of been a red last week and had he connected with the stamp today (not to mention jumping into a fight straight after) another one this week…I love a nut case but that’s maybe pushing it even for me

  • 42 welshgeordie9 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:01 PM

    Take a Chancel on me

    Swans got found out today.

  • 43 Nufc-83 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:01 PM

There was a lot of players who would have improved us for relatively little money. I would have gone for vardy, Brady, Mohammedy, Phillips

  • 44 Ron Knee // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:02 PM

You don’t have to vote, mate. Abstain!

  • 45 Nufc-83 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:02 PM

Although granted vardy would not have been so cheap

  • 46 firebug666 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:03 PM

Have you come to gloat then?

  • 47 Noel Worst // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:03 PM

Obertan did do better than most on our team again, yes.

1st half he was the only one to have a proper go at their defence in any way shape or form. First with his cut-inside and shot and then with his burst through the centre, where he crossed it to the near post for the nonchalant Cisse to not bother to really make an attempt to get there ahead of the defender.

  • 48 lesh // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:03 PM

Says it all! (From the BBC)

The stats you need to know
?Andre Ayew has scored in nine of his last 15 league appearances (Ligue 1 and Premier League), including five goals in his last seven games.
?Bafetimbi Gomis has scored seven goals in his last eight Premier League appearances.
?Newcastle only managed four total shots against Swansea, which is the fewest they have had in the Premier League since March 2012 against Arsenal (4).

And Ashley wouldn’t pay that little bit more for Gomis and Ayew? What price economy!

  • 49 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:04 PM

Welshie I still don’t rate Swansea it would’ve been a different game if we had kept 11 men on. plus Gomis was offside

  • 50 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:05 PM

    @Nufc-83 + @ GeordieTwo

I just don’t get what the higher ups at our club are thinking .

We have some really talented attacking options but our defence is STILL the weak link and has been since 2008 FFS yet we still haven’t rectified it .

That’s why everyone crying out for Austin (Although I would love him at NUFC) are missing the bigger picture of our defence being garbage bar M’bemba and Janmaat (not today mind you and he deserves a slap for that) whereas I would rather we spent the remaining transfer kitty (if any) was spent on the defence .

Anyway, I’ll just enjoy watching Dortmund destroy Borussia 😉 .

  • 51 will die for the toon army // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:05 PM

Obertan was our best player. Mbemba and Colo are good defenders but so short and will cost us so many Goals in the EPL.

And having a thought of both sitting doesnt come to mind. So buy Abdennour and have a 3- man defence. Our full backs very good going forward but very poor defending so they are better Wing backs.
    Starting back 3:
    Back up:

Throw Janmatt and Haidara to battle it out with the wingers.

  • 52 GeordieTwo // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:07 PM

    Our lineup for next week:
Pekka Rinne (plays goal in the NHL)
do we have an RB available? Mbemba,,, Colo’s mum LB???
Phil Crazy Legs Gristle,,, Nobby Stiles,,,, Squidward
Mit the Mental Maniac,, Belgian midget striker, Wij

  • 53 Thump // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:07 PM

@GeordieTwo: I reckon Colo’s contract extension was a power play by Schteve. Some managers drop a high profile player, other managers will flog somebody at the drop of a hat, others (like Schteve) impress their authority by handing an “important” player a new contract.

  • 54 Brummie // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:07 PM

    Ashley OUT!!!!

Mc Claren wont be here next season if we don’t get top 10 this season. Collo what a waste of a shirt. we need 5 player now A top all round defender, 2 left/right Wingers and a Striker. But knowing Ashley he will not spend another 35 Mill will he??

  • 55 welshgeordie9 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:09 PM

  • 57 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:10 PM

Swansea will get found out, they were made to look impressive

  • 58 yorkymag // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:10 PM

It’s interesting that almost everyone is having a go at the defenders and janmat today was indefensible but both this week and last week there is a common thread that exposes the defensive unit our problem so far is imo the same as last season and that is central midfield or more accurately midfield in general
Cool back is simply too slow ,sissokko is lazy,Anita is limited ,ginni has real talent but is a number 10 and obertans would not get in another premier league team
We will continue to be over run and until this fundamental area is resolved we will struggle
The defenders we have would look completly different if they had a combination of Southampton and Swansea midfield in front of them 2 midfielders is a major a priority
Sell Sissoko if necessary but a pacey tackler and a passer urgently needed

  • 59 welshgeordie9 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:12 PM

Man Utd and then arsenal, need more players and fast.

  • 60 welshgeordie9 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:13 PM

  • 61 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:14 PM

No today they were made to look impressive, aside from a couple of pacey wingers Swansea are a bang average team

  • 62 welshgeordie9 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:15 PM

Saw shelvey shopping the other day, Christ he’s tall.

  • 63 Jib // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:17 PM

Don’t rewrite history to fill your hate filled agenda bonny lad
We chased Ayew persistently for ages , he was a free agent and chose Swansea.

  • 64 welshgeordie9 // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:19 PM

You know sweet fa about swans if you think they rely on the wingers, when all the creativity last season came from middle of the midfield from shelvey, ki, Sigurdsson.

  • 65 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:21 PM

Obviously I don’t know as much about Swansea as unlike you I do not support them but they are an average team

  • 66 posada // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:27 PM

On Mitro, he looks akward. Does not look balanced to me.
Also, his behaviour on pitch. The Manager has to take responsibility for that. Is he getting any help. Is he listening.
    Janmaat likewise. No discipline.

  • 67 billy elliott // Aug 15, 2015 at 6:43 PM

The strikers newcastle missed out on over the tight Ashley years have punished us!!!

  • 68 Ian Toon // Aug 15, 2015 at 7:53 PM

Welsh- The Toon were poor from start to finish, We really didn’t look at any time that we wanted to take the initiative and seek to control of the game – a spiritless performance.
You rightly corrected those that suggested that you won down the flanks. Shelvey was allowed to knock balls about with no pressure much for keeping a high line and pressing. All in all we got off lightly as a 5-0 drubbing would have been about right on the balance of play. Swansea carried on where they left off against Chelsea and I was again impressed by Montero as I had said prior to the game he Gomis and Ayew would cause us problems. You are certainly playing some good football and talk of an average team is silly because you might well be but one that is a form team and we failed to play a pressing game to knock you out of your stride.
In reality after the second goal we looked simply to damage limitation- spiritless. Janmatt above all else – he seemed to almost give up long before departing for good. I was surprised that Macca didn’t bring on Mitrovic earlier to give us more of presence up front because Cisse just didn’t feature. I recognise Belfast’s issue of him being a red card waiting to happen but we need some aggression in the side.

Mbemba did OK , but we need a commanding CB – we’ve got the smallest back four in the PL. In two games that’s 3 headed goals we have conceded. Additionally we need a full back – just who was Macca going to replace Janmaat with – Anita he is overrated by many in my opinion. Colback was one of our better players without having a particularly good game.

With a run of tough fixtures to come this was a demoralising showing and we have far too many players still short of full fitness- let’s show some fight and spirit. Talk of 3-5-2 would make sense against ManU
with full backs becoming more attacking re- designated as midfielders and play them higher up the pitch. ManU have not overly impressed and what have we got to lose. Let’s at least compete.
So the Board should approve a CB, FB, ST ( Austin scored) – but why not Berahino( ?) and another experienced wide/ winger to get behind back fours. Obertan did OK incidentally.
