McClaren Explains The Kind Of Player Mitrovic Is

11:09 pm, Sunday, August 16th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 99 Comments

Aleksandar Mitrovic has picked up two yellow cards in the official 23 minutes he has played competitively for Newcastle so far this season, and he probably needs to settle down just a little bit, but Steve McClaren has again said he knows the type of player Aleksandar is, and you don’t take away that edge he has got.

Steve has talked after the game in more detail about the Serbian striker,  who is certainly full of energy and still only 20, and  turns 21 next month.

Aleksandar Mitrovic being booked on Saturday
Oh ref – it wasn’t a foul – was it?

This is what Steve McClaren has said about the young gun, who cost us around £12M from Anderlecht :

“I’ve had a lot of these type of players during my career and you do not take that aggression, that emotion, away from the game.

“Just don’t do that. For example, Diego Costa at Chelsea. To curb it you take 50% of their game away.”

It will be good to see Aleksandar get  a start at some point in the near future, but with Papiss Cisse playing fairly well at the moment,  McClaren can bring Mitrovic on during the second half to get a feel of the Premier League.

He will probably get his first start in the League Cup tie the week after next against Northampton Town at St. James’ Park.

And if we are to continue to play one man up front in a 4-2-3-1 formation, why would we need to bring in another striker before September – unless we will be changing to something like a 4-4-2 formation?

I’ve convinced myself defense is still the big problem and we should be bringing in two defenders – a center-back and a left-back before September.

And things may not look good at the moment – but hey – be happy – at least we are above the Champions Chelsea and Sunderland at the moment in the Premier League table.

Comments welcome.

This guy must start the next game. We need somebody to hold up play

Just curb that 4-2-3-1 would you!

  • 3 ronjohno // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:18 PM

what do you mean cisse playing fairly well – he was less than useless yesterday.

  • 4 jimmysmith // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:23 PM

This is my favoured team considering we are clearly still searching for our best 11, and assuming fitness and availability.

  • 5 OneAlanShearer // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:30 PM

If we play aarons and thauvin either side of Wijnaldum in a 4231 we will have a potent attack. Need to start mitrovic to hold up the ball. Cisse couldn’t hold up his own trousers. Or 442 with another cb and left back and Austin. That would bring the fresh blood we need and the balance required.

  • 6 jimiley // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:35 PM

form is temporary but class is permanent. We have so many top players we must finish in the top 6.

  • 7 OneAlanShearer // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:37 PM

Jimmy the problem is sdj has no pace and Wijnaldum joined to play further forward. He wants to play number 10. If we get thauvin I think we could move to 433 which is actually schteves preferred formation.

    Ashley Out!

  • 9 nufc 11 // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:44 PM

Michael Dawson frn hull, Daniel agger frn bronby, Evans a tall cb that can attack the ball we need something desperately mbeama is in jeperty of taking on colos bad habits the more he plays with him Saylor should play at rb not cb

  • 10 OneAlanShearer // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:46 PM

Hold on Jimmy. ..Colback at left back?! No chance. Haidara is pants there but colback needs to be in the engine room.

  • 11 OneAlanShearer // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:47 PM

Evans would be my first choice of those 3.

  • 12 toon22 // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:48 PM

Our captain and CB being out jumped by papa smurf should ring alarm bells somewhere at the club.

  • 13 Derek // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:50 PM

Our defense sucks and it is doubtful it’ll be improved this window,
Our best player of last season is suspended in our next game against Man U,
Our owner still hasn’t shown he’s not in it for profit alone and hasn’t sufficiently improved the squad,
Our players are already starting to pick up injuries and we have very limited replacements,
We are yet to win a game but have much tougher matches coming up

And Ed says – but hey – be happy, because our 1 point in 2 games puts us above Sunderland and Chelsea. Oh how fantastic life is as a Newcastle fan. We could finish the season 18th and things would be great, because there will be above two “top” teams that finished below us.

The fact the some fans are so ridiculously over-optimistic and unrealistic makes me realise just how easy it must be for Ashley to run this business (club) the way he does.

  • 14 stan anderson // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:51 PM

Mitrovic is going to be like Tiote, more banned than what he plays for us.
Makes no diff to him as he still gets paid, banned or not.
    2 bookings in about 20 mins.playing time.
    Think we,ve been had meself.

  • 18 jimmysmith // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:58 PM

Yeah, but how to fit in Tiote, Wijnaldum, De Jong and Colback, assuming all are fit. De Jong has been here over a year, and we are none the wiser as to how good he is. But its hard to imagine McClaren won’t try to get him and Wiji in the same side, at least to see if it can work. I like Colback, but in the middle of the park, alongside Anita, that’s a functional pairing at best. Neat and tidy, but not at all imposing and you’d think they would just get overwhelmed by some of the more dynamic pairings they’d be confronted with, and there are many.

  • 19 toon kk // Aug 16, 2015 at 11:59 PM

People miss the point, we’re the same team that almost got us relegated. We’ll be in another relegation battle this one also.
After watching motd we’re probably the team that actually puts the least effort in.

  • 20 Mister Tuff // Aug 17, 2015 at 12:02 AM

Reports circulation in France via RMC and GFN that Marseille have accepted a 17 Euro bid for Thauvin and getting Cabella on loan.

  • 21 Mister Tuff // Aug 17, 2015 at 12:03 AM

    oops 17 million Euros.

  • 22 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 17, 2015 at 12:04 AM

Cisse should not be starting, he should only be played in last 20 mins, if we need a goal. That’s when cisse is dangerous, cause he doesn’t need to get involved with link up. When momentum is on our side & we are pinning the opposition back. All he has to do is be at the right place at right time.

We should always be starting with Mitrovic, he can hold up in the final third, & get others involved futher up the pitch. With cisse we have to work our way up to the final third.

Understandable mitrovic looks like he’s goin to get a lot of cards, McClaren really has to calm him down.

  • 24 jimmysmith // Aug 17, 2015 at 12:06 AM

At one point last season we were fifth, and good for it. When Pardew left we were solidly ninth. His departure and injuries are a better explanation for the second half of the season, and also having nothing to play for. I don’t think last term tells us much about what will happen this time round.

  • 26 OneAlanShearer // Aug 17, 2015 at 12:14 AM

Jimmy I agree it’s another gap. Anita and colback are not good enough. I think sdj will need to be a bit part player. Signed to be number 10 by pardew and schteve signed wijnaldum to do that. A nice issue to have. If only we had that dilemma at centre back.

As it stands I don’t see perez playing much either. Schteve needs to find a formation he favours that fits what we have come 1st September.

Against mufc I’d say 4411. Two solid banks of 4 with the added chance of goals at the other end.

    Mbemba saylor Colo Haidara
    Thauvin(hopefully) tiote Colback Aarons

  • 27 Sav // Aug 17, 2015 at 12:27 AM

Mitrovic announced himself that he would ‘kick defenders back’. Firstly, that is not what a tough attacker does as he will just make himself a target. Secondly, it is the Serb who is doing most of the kicking. Macca needs to nip this in the bud now, not defending him with ‘assassin’s eyes’ and ‘bit of the devil’ nonsense. Show some professionalism and discipline. So far it is yellow cards 2, shots on goal 0 from our no.45. Is Perez not going to get a shot as our no.10 this season? Why put on an unfit de Jong when hard-working and attacking Perez has earned a chance in this role?

  • 28 jimmysmith // Aug 17, 2015 at 1:17 AM

The signing of Wijnaldum and Mitrovic, along with the return to fitness of De Jong has no doubt pushed Perez down the pecking order. He will have to prove himself on the training pitch and in cameos off the bench and take his chance when it come, you’d imagine. Although opportunities are likely to be rarer this time roundfor hi. Most probably through they’ll come through injury or suspension, but with his talent he could force his way in on merit. He is slight though.

Florian Thauvin expected on Tyneside tomorrow…. #NUFC

These guys are generally pretty accurate. I know people have slated them over the Shaqiri thing but I do think we were interested as they said. McClaren isn’t going to say “we tried to get him but he thought Stoke was a better option”. They were also the first ones who reported Riviere and Janmaat.

Not sold on Thauvin. A hot and cold player.

  • 33 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 17, 2015 at 2:59 AM

It still looks like the club is a shambles to me. If Ashley was serious Charnley and Carr would have been on their bikes with Carver and Stone. The squad is still brimful of players who have no place in the Premier League, and a number of them are in our best eleven, apparently. McClaren is obviously not a wizard with a magic wand who can change things instantly, but he has shown nothing to make me feel like he was the right choice. Everything about the club smacks of amateur hour. If Thauvin arrives it will be an absolute joke, couldn’t be a more inappropriate signing for our circumstances.

  • 39 Reyantoon // Aug 17, 2015 at 4:35 AM

To be fair to Thauvin, better to have him than the injury prone Marveaux, the inconsistent Obertan and the like. The lad has skills, holds the ball well and invites his teammates to play and attack. He also can play on the right wing, left wing, central mf,as well as behind a striker. He is good in set pieces too. When he arrives and starts to play,
our attacking and creativity power will definitely improve by huge margin. Can’t see we’ll sign another central defender but after completing the Thauvin deal, the next signing will be either Austin or Rolan..!!

  • 40 expatmag // Aug 17, 2015 at 5:16 AM

Sorry to hear that. Hope it gets better soon.

I see Ashley Cole has had his contract ripped up at Roma. It would be worth bringing him in for a season and have Haidara and Dummett learn from him.

I dont know much about Thauvin but if he is quick creative and can score goals, he might be an asset.

I dont see us going for another defender or forward unless we offload a few players.

  • 41 one fine day // Aug 17, 2015 at 5:38 AM

    Cisse playing fairly well.?
Hopefully while cisse was stood hands on hips on the halfway line he may have watched gomis ( rumoured to be a lazy player when we were in for him) working his bits off pulling players all over the place and pressuring the full backs ,scored one and was putting member under pressure as a decoy for the second .
I know cisse takes the chances he gets but the other 89 mins he does zero ,offers nothing and his body laugage is all wrong .
Pretty telling when your pole puts him below Colocini and a player who was sent off after 41 mins.
If we are going to play with a lone striker then it’s got yo be a player who can play with back to goal and hold the ball up.
Watched time after time balls lost due to lack of any movement ahead of the midfield which put us under pressure .
Yes he scored last week but it was actually harder to have missed it from there .
Why are waiting until we chase games before we bring on mitrovic and Aaron’s?
Let’s give mitrovic the first half at old Trafford
If we are going to try n defend there( daft) then defend from the front with our back four trying to sit back and absorb wave after wave is asking for a hiding but I am sure Steve knows .. Right?
We are needing a cb big time and signing florian (cabella2) does not make any sense tight now to me … If not I’d be looking at a Taylor /m,member or lascalles in the middle and we need a captain who screams and shouts to in the middle .
Also having serious concerns over de Jong. Starting to feel like micheal Owen all over again

  • 42 one fine day // Aug 17, 2015 at 5:57 AM

    Lesh @31
If we follow that reasoning it may explain why obetan is getting a game:)
Maybe they will put willo on at old Trafford ( match beamed worldwide) to see if any of Europes finest will go all out to prize him away … That’s if Leeds are no longer interested .

So, now that we have the easy games out of the way 😉 vs. the new boys in town, here come the truly hard ones vs.the behemoths…

Our hope of any points from Arsenal depends on which will show up, and luck. Vs. Man U we may have more chance.

Steve and Kid, you need to really get to work mates. Your current formula and line-up just doesn’t work. You need to put Perez back in the starting 11. What did you try on the right there vs. Swansea? I swear, at times it was Anita CB (!), Mbemba RB and Janmaat on the wing, right? Guys, innovative but… crazy, man! Anyway, do not try that again, right? 😉

More tips on how to get anything out of Man U later.

Home-work in the mean time: how can both Aaarons and Perez be played? How does Cabella get a role? Why were we so crap vs. Swansea? Is SDJ hiding his amazing talent somewhere? Answer these q.s with video and other evidence, simple emotional opinions not allowed. Those are for us, on this blog 🙂

    Best of

Interesting that Chelsea and NUFC have gone the same way. Good for both that their embarrassments have occurred before the window closes.

NUFC need 5 more players, now; Chelsea 2. City miles ahead of them.

Cyprus…I do think tho will get better as we move along, but I think alot of ppl will realize that SM is not that technical or tactical as they thought!

I’ll give him a few more games to mark his mark, but up until now I have not been impressed with his continuing 4-2-3-1 and his tactical decisions which seems to be the same each games (which doesn’t really render them tactical)

…that was the same problem (among others) I had with Pardew. He should of course be allowed time…

Time is just of the essences here…well morning all 😉

  • 46 cyprus // Aug 17, 2015 at 6:46 AM

    Jesper mate,
Spot on re Steve and tactics. He, Paul and Ian haven’t shown tactical brilliance yet, although admittedly they’re trying things. (see my post above re what they tried on the right!!)

The thing is, I predicted CL football this or next year, so I’m in danger of being exposed here, Mourinho style. The Swansea game was too much in the AP mode. e.g. we needed to pressure them on the ball, we gave them plenty of space. We needed to close down, bully and man mark Shelvey (he’s good but he ain’t Messy FFS), we didn’t.

  • 47 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 17, 2015 at 6:58 AM

Cyprus…it shouldn’t be about showing any of us fans up 😉

…but that was a very positive prediction mate lol

I have tried not to be too harsh on Stevie as I wad not very pleased with his appointment…I’ll try and stay calm for time being – I want nothing more than to be proving wrong here, but I will point out obvious as usual (that will get me sticks by some)

Did you read the article I posted yesterday about the Steve Stone interview. What a bunch of opportunists we had here…

  • 48 LGFUAD21 // Aug 17, 2015 at 6:59 AM

Signing thauvin would be a colossal mistake.

If we are willing to spend that much on him then why didn’t we go for Shaquiri, a much better and more suited player for the premier league.

We already have Cabella who may or may not come good but who also looked a mile above this guy in ligue 1.

Thauvin can do a trick, has some pace but he can’t cross or hit the target or stay on his feet.

Marseille must be laughing at the prospect of getting £13m or so for him.

Put sammy ameobi in the french league and he would bang them in.

  • 49 LGFUAD21 // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:04 AM

Paul George Ntep would be a better and cheaper option. He looks far more powerful and can score.

  • 50 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:08 AM

Very odd if news of Thauvin is correct, and there seems to be enough of a head of steam to give it some credence. I do think we need improvement out wide, but this lad hasn’t convinced me in any performances I’ve seen him play in. I’d rather persevere with Cabella who may show more improvement after a season in the Prem and spend the cash on other much needed reinforcements.

We also have Aarons and Perez who should be in contention for the wide attacking roles at the moment. If Sissoko isn’t fit for Saturday, then it should be Perez on the right and Aarons on the left.

  • 52 robmefirst // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:13 AM

Biggest concern is that we play Man U and Arsenal before the window closes. Will be difficult to get anything from those games and see what we need. If we had Norwich and Stoke, then we could see if we were behind, like the unwashed, or if the squad is fine.

  • 53 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:18 AM

Playing Obertan in the first two matched shows our lack of both options and quality out wide!

This persistence with this defensive version of a 4-2-3-1 are not making matters better. Hope SM will be forced to make some changes now.

I remember when Pardew reluctantly had to make dramatic changes…we played some of the best football under him.

  • 54 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:19 AM

  • 55 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:21 AM

    Ron…no, he’s not that good 😉

  • 56 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:24 AM

Saturday was very reminiscent of the back end of last season, poor performance, a red card and niggly injuries. Heads were down. That entire attitude should have been kicked into touch over the summer with a good preseason, and a significant number of good additions with the rubbish going the other way.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen – none of it did – and there has to be a worry that a defeats against Man U then Arsenal send morale to rock bottom again. We really need two very good additions in this week, and maybe a third next week just to lift spirits around the place.

No away win since Carver ‘masterminded’ a win over Hull way back in Carver’s 4th league match in charge. We need one soon to get the monkey of our backs, what better place then at Old Trafford to do it!

  • 57 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:27 AM

It’s going to be very interesting to see how McClaren reacts to our pathetic performance against Swansea

I’d like to see Perez featuring in the line-up. (I’m assuming SDJ will have picked up another injury!)

  • 58 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:27 AM

Yeah, the fact Obertan seems to be Mac’s is getting selected is a big worry. Either he doesn’t think Perez and Aarons are ready for the Prem, or he actually rates Obertan. Either way, he is wrong.

Aarons, Cabella, Perez, Sissoko should all be ahead of Obertan for a wide role.

  • 59 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:29 AM

Have you seen much of Thauvin?

  • 60 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:30 AM

instead of Cabella we should send marveux to Marseille on loan deal

  • 61 robmefirst // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:32 AM

Obertan deserved a start after last week. He isn’t the greatest player in the world, but his is a wide midfielder, and his cross was pretty good for Wijnaldum’s goal. Perez is a striker, and Cabella is injured. Agree that Aarons should be ahead of Obertan though.

  • 62 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:33 AM

If the reports about Thauvin are true we may not see Cabella again.

I think we all agree that Obertan is sub-standard. Why can’t McClaren see that? One great assist isn’t enough!

  • 63 firebug666 // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:35 AM

Not as optimistic as I was for this season, but still have enough to think we will get better, after the performance against Swansea we can only get better.

I expected the loss against the Swans, simply because our energy levels seem to be so far behind everyone else, but I also expected us to be better than we were.

I don’t expect us to get anything out of the next two games, but I do expect us to at least turn up and put in a shift.

I am also willing to give McClaren some time, but he needs to be aware that he got is so so wrong on Saturday, and that the team we have are simply not good enough to play the 4-2-3-1 system, we are more suited to a 4-3-3 and have had our best runs playing that system.

Ah well, hope things can improve, but don’t expect too much in the early part of this season.

  • 64 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:35 AM

Lilongwe…beats we as well, but it seems his new found love in 4-2-3-1 is part of the problem.

I’ll agree Aarons need to be eased in but at least give him the chance. Perez has shown he’s ready!

Sissoko for me should not be played out there unless SM is going to change formation (Obertan should just not play in any formation)

I don’t know what’s up with McClaren…he was never a manager I rated. But frankly I am just quite annoyed that what ever he’s learned in Holland has just been thrown out the window 🙁

  • 65 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:38 AM

Not enough to form a solid opinion on him, but he is yet to impress me when I have. I’m a long way from being convinced he would be a good signing.

I would much prefer to see Matty Phillips arrive, direct, quick strong. As a 20 year old breaking into the Blackpool side he got a few goals and assists. Last year at QPR he managed a few goals and 8 assists so he can do it in the Prem. QPR were said to want £10million earlier in the window, I reckon you could get him for less though.

Ticks the boxes for the club as well – only 24, will have a decent sell on value. Plus he is English/Scottish, homegrown and a couple of good seasons here and he could be worth a fortune.

  • 66 Mag52 // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:38 AM

If Mitrovic is to start games, he’s going to have to change his approach pretty damn quick.
SM talks of Diego Costa’s robust style, but we all know that the prima donnas of the premier league can get away with quite a bit more than the likes of us. Mitrovic will be a marked man from now on, not just by refs. but by opposing defenders winding him up. He needs a few sessions with Shearer to learn the subtleties of being a hard CF.

  • 67 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:39 AM

Perez rarely played as a striker until he moved to Newcastle. He played as an attacking midfielder either centrally or on the wing.

  • 68 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:41 AM

Your last para should have Ashley salivating!

To be fair to McClaren, he’s taking over a pretty poor bunch of players. How many are good enough for the EPL?

  • 69 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:44 AM

I’d like to see McClaren push Perez and Aarons right up alongside Mitrovic in a 433. Both are young enough and energetic enough to work back if needs be, but will also force opposition full backs to stay back.

Not sure who would be in the midfield 3, probably Wijnaldum, Anita and then one of the rest.

We can’t rely on defence and containing opposition so we need to get at them, force them to worry about our attackers.

  • 70 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:47 AM

I don’t see the logic in going for Thauvin as most people can see – we need a new defence.
A commanding central defender who is a good organiser and has a VOICE
and a goalkeeper who commands the six yard box and is brave and gets into the space between himself and the defence when the opposition whips in free kicks – teams have now cottoned on to our weaknesses and are are exploiting it!
and also the keeper should have a voice as he sees everything in front of him.

  • 71 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:47 AM

I’m not too worried about Mitro’s aggressive style. It was like playing with 10 men before Janmaats sending off anyway as Cisse was anonymous throughout.

Just in Mitro’s 8 minute cameo on Saturday we saw more from him then we did all match for Cisse. He is raw, and needs a bit of fine tuning, but I’d rather he did that while starting then pointless cameo’s at the end when we are barely in the game.

  • 72 jimmysmith // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:49 AM

He may not think theres much between Obertan, Aarons and Perez. It’s hard to know to what degree he rates each of them. One thing is certain though, Obertan has the greater power, pace and experience, which might be the thing that is perhaps just tipping the scales in his favour, at this very early stage in the season.

  • 73 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:51 AM

Plenty of pace but precious little product!

  • 74 beermonkey // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:59 AM

I would like us to go 433 because I think it suits us better
but from what McLaren has said and where he see’s certain players like sissoko wijnaldum and dejong he wants them up around a striker
where as a 433 I think perez even rivere are more suited and unless u play dejong as a striker in a 433 he wont feature at all

  • 75 jimmysmith // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:59 AM

The run and cross for Wijnaldum. That goal is far and away the highlight of our season so far, surely.

  • 76 firebug666 // Aug 17, 2015 at 7:59 AM

It’s our system that is letting us down. We are not suited to a 4-2-3-1 system, we do not have the players who are capable of supplying a lone striker, and we do not have a striker who can play that role, (maybe Mitrovic).

All of our bet performances and results have come playing a 4-3-3 as this suites the players we have. It also allows us a way out from the back having three forward players putting opposition defences under pressure.

  • 77 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:01 AM

Experience is pointless if you aren’t a good footballer. Obertan is a track athlete. Clip the ball down the line to Usain Bolt and he will probably put in a good cross once every 10 attempts.

Perez proved he can cut it in the Prem last season, and did more last season than Ober has done since arriving at the club. Aarons clearly has the potential to be better than Ober currently is.

Other than that, if we don’t have wingers that Mac thinks are good enough, then don’t play a formation that has wingers. If Mac thinks Obertan is good enough, then I worry.

    ROSHAN MAGPIE// Aug 17, 2015 at 7:30 AM

“instead of Cabella we should send marveux to Marseille on loan deal..”

My thoughts too.But don’t think will happen tho.
The lad became distant memory.. 🙁

  • 79 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:04 AM

If Mac is more worried about fitting people in then getting the right fit then he shouldn’t be in the job. There will be times a change of formation is needed, but none of this square pegs in round holes just because he has certain players who he wants to shoehorn in somehow.

  • 80 Jail for Ashley // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:08 AM

When trying to defend Pardews ability to have us finish ninth please look at the goals for and against that someone posted earlier, football is an entertainment business not about finishing ninth to satisfy an owners demands.

  • 81 hibbit // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:08 AM

all this rubbish people talk about oberton he never has been and never will be a premier league footballer SAF must of clapped his hands when we bought him

  • 82 jlarsen // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:09 AM

Did you guys see De Jong vs Southampton? He came on and was just jogging between players. No challenges and no sprints. Obertan had a cracking assist in that game, but otherwise 95 % of his involvements are shite. He has no understanding of the game, no intelligence. You cannot be a premiership player when his only attribute is lightening pace. Haidara has no plan and is also not intelligent enough. Wrong decisions and too many misplaced passes. There are so many problems in the team! Anita lacks quality both on and off the ball, and is too weak to play in this league. He probably has 2 or 3 good games in two years. We need to build for the future and stop playing the temporary below-average team. I am a big fan of Coloccini, but sadly his positioning will not make up for his lack of pace on this level, and that is why we cannot push higher up. So I guess we need a CB to play alongside Mbemba. We cannot defend crosses and set pieces, no determination in the box. The next problem is as you are mentioning: Papiss as a lone striker. That is simply put, poor management. He can finish and he moves well inside the box, but as a hold up player he is useless. We have amazing talents in Aarons and Mitrovic, and I cannot understand that McClaren keeps them on the bench. They need to start games to develop. Anita and Obertan should definitely not play. Why not play two strikers and get Aarons and Sissoko to provide crosses? And if Janmaat can stop making silly fouls on the opponents half, then he can be an attacking threat too. I would play both Mitrovic and Cissé against Manchester United, as they are used to play defensive teams at Old Trafford. We need to take chances and hope that Krul and the centre backs can cope with Man Utd. We are fortunate that Rooney is playing so poorly at the moment, and they are not so dangerous as they normally are – which is why we should have an attacking gameplan. I know SM will start with Obertan but I hope he doesn’t. I want to see Mitrovic and Cissé form a partnership, and Colback and Wijnaldum should be enough at central midfield. 4-4-2 is the best system with the players we got. IF we get hold of a good DMC then of course we should play him, but Anita is a waste of time. He always plays the ball on his first touch without precision. No time for movement, and no creativity. If they come to Old Trafford with that mentality we saw in the second half at Swansea, we will be losing 1-0 or 2-0. Why not give the opposition something to worry about? I know if Mitrovic plays, then certainly Smalling and Blind will feel that he is there, which will give Cissé, Sissoko and Wijnaldum more space. Take a risk, Steve. I would rather be hammered 5-2 then see us lose a boring match. We have no reason to be terrified of Man Utd, and with the right tactics we can get a point or three. Right back solution for the next game is to play Mbemba there and Taylor at CB. Krul – Mbemba, Saylor, Colo, Haidara – Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Colback, Aarons – Cissé, Mitrovic. Hopefully Tioté will train hard to get back in shape, lol. SM needs to show that he can pick right tactics away from home. The solution is not to defend for 90 minutes. Then we will probably concede within the first 10, because we are not good at defending – at all. No Anita, No Obertan please. And teach Haidara that he should not cross just to cross.. We need rhythm, and at the moment he loses possession too often, and his attempts at crossing hits the right back in the chest or goes way behind the goal 9 out of 10 times. Sorry for poor English, and greetings from Norway. Howay the lads 🙂

  • 83 Jail for Ashley // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:11 AM

    On Thauvin,
So they’ve realised nobody is about to pay 20M for Cabella so lets ship him and his PL experience out for a player that somebody might pay 20M for if he does good.

  • 84 beermonkey // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:12 AM

    I agree
I can see why he played obertan in the last preseason game anita was threading balls through to obertan to run on to of course he did nowt with them but it was the plan for Swansea and it worked and he put in a great cross for an assist
lots on here go on about him needing confidence would it have been fair to drop him

hopefully McLaren will change things for man u

saw a bit of man u on Friday and thought they were sloppy with the ball if we press like we did in the first game we could well against them

  • 85 hibbit // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:17 AM

beer the heads go down to quick for my liking we showed very little fight when other teams get on top i can see us just rolling over i think its got a lot to do with no leader on the pitch

  • 86 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:21 AM

It would be great if McClaren adopted an offensive set-up as you suggest, but I bet he doesn’t!

  • 87 firebug666 // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:21 AM

I agree 100%, lack of leadership left us running around like chickens with their head cut off.

However our fearless captain has vowed to put things right with our away form…..mmmmmmmm!

  • 88 beermonkey // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:21 AM

last season we did but we went 1 down against Southampton we stepped it up kicked on and got to 2 1
I was hoping this was the end of last season but it came back in force in the last game

I do have more faith that this lot will sort them out rather than carver and co

  • 89 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:24 AM

Ron…I’ll agree SM has not been dealt the best of cards…but is he happy with the current situation or is he going to speak his mind (and not do like Pardew, Carver and Stone) and force Charmless’ hands?

  • 90 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:25 AM

Well that’s that problem sorted out! In Colo we trust!

  • 91 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:26 AM

Lilongwe #69…that’s exactly my thinking as well mate!

  • 92 firebug666 // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:28 AM

McClaren is reading the same pre-prepared rubbish that the inept one waffled out. It’s just a different accent.

    Ron Knee

PMSL: Aye Colo is the man to sort out our poor away form, expect an injury soon, he defo needs time off.

  • 93 Ron Knee // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:29 AM

I think there’s a big difference between what he says in public and what he says behind the scenes. I also think he has more influence than Pardew/Carver. Isn’t he pals with Carr?

I’m hoping he can get Charmless to act intelligently for once – but I’m not holding my breath!

  • 94 sparky55 // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:45 AM

My worry is we’re still pursuing Thauvin when we don’t really need him, which in my book means he’s coming in because someone else is going…and IMO that person going is Sissoko and the club know it’ll have to be a good signing to replace or there’ll be hell on (not that that’ll worry Ashley like!)…

Think is we’ll get 16-17million for Sissoko which means we’ll have the cash to buy an other CB with the change from buying Thauvin and that’ll be the window done.

  • 95 nufcursed // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:48 AM

if mcclaren plays cissé against man u, he’s no better than pardew or carver!

    we need to play:

    mbemba taylor colo haidara
    tiote colback
    cabella wijnaldum barons

    that’s our strongest line-up atm.

also sissoko is so terrible i do not get why so many people cannot see that sissoko cannot control a ball, he lacks so much technique he looks as clumsy as janmaat.
our wings our so poor (both defensively as attacking-wise) it’s frightening!
cannot believe players like wijnaldum and mitrovic wanted to join us. swansea is miles better than our team:(

and mitrovic will come good! (to all doubters)
yes he’s a bit of a temper but he’s by far our best striker!! (apart from ayoze maybe who needs to get more chances)

i could solve this team in a month!
cannot believe these managers we have cannot solve our problems in years!

  • 96 nufcursed // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:51 AM

also why are all our players better in other teams??
look at armstrong! i’ve never seen him play like that at newcastle..
seems like this club is truly cursed..

  • 97 jlarsen // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:54 AM

I don’t think Sissoko will leave in this window, Sparky. 🙂 But I agree, we don’t need Thauvin. We need left back and centre back. We need more of course, but LB and CB should be a priority

  • 98 jlarsen // Aug 17, 2015 at 8:55 AM

nufccursed: you know Armstrong is playing in League One, right? 😉

  • 99 widowmagandapoke // Aug 17, 2015 at 2:11 PM

I totally disagree with Stevie Mac. Unless you want endless red cards for Mitrovic, he will have to put a lid on hom. Referees will all be watching him from now on. Djanmat has also suddenly become a rogue elephant
