A Strange Deal Being Rumored For Newcastle

8:59 am, Monday, August 17th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

We had reported yesterday the Sunday Mirror story that Florian Thauvin was now close – on the “verge” of  – joining Newcastle, and the deal is said to be going through this week for somewhere in the region of
£12M – maybe a little more than that.

The news now is that Remy Cabella will be sent out on loan for the season to Marseilles as part of the deal, with a clause that he can be signed by the French club at the end of the season, and that rumor has been around for a few weeks now.

Florian Thauvin – becoming a Newcastle player?

Florian Thauvin has long been a target of Newcastle’s for a fee years, and in particular Chief Scout Graham Carr is very keen on him, so it could be that Newcastle bring in the winger this week, and in the process Remy Cabella will go the other way on loan.

But we’d still be surprised if Cabella is part of the deal,  since Steve McClaren hasn’t even had a good look at him,  and it always takes time to settle into the English way of playing football.

If this happens then it looks like Newcastle have already given up on Cabella.

And basically we’d be getting with Thauvin what we thought we were getting with Remy Cabella last year at this time – a promising young French winger – although Thauvin is not yet a full French International.

And remember that Cabella was brought to Newcastle last summer with great fanfare.

If you believe all the Twitter chatter then it’s a done deal – but we wonder.

Thauvin is very much like Cabella but he’s also good at set plays, and maybe that’s the big advantage that has attracted Newcastle to the very skillful French U21 International.

However, we still think our big weakness is in defense, and that’s been shown in our first two games,  so if the Thauvin deal does go through, we’d still like to see a center-back and full back come through the door before September.

We should be able to get a full back in, but as far as a top center-back goes, with McClaren having put his faith in Coloccini, we’d be surprised if that happens.

If it does then where would Colo play – and he’s just been kept on as the Newcastle captain and leader of the side this season.

It will be good to get Thauvin in, but not at the expense of Remy Cabella, and we still need a couple of defenders to plug the weaknesses in the Newcastle side, which have been around now for three years.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I don’t want Cabella going the other way…

I was rather hoping they would take Obertan after his cross against Soton

    17m for sissoko – 12m for Thauvin = 5m change for a centre back

Wishful thinking I know but after two games and four goals against, SM must surely realise where the priorities must lay.

We don’t need Thauvin even if Sissoko goes…we have one of the best prospects in the premiership (Not Gabby!) and he can switch channels to suit.

If we buy the dutch left back he’ll be bombing up the left wing anyway so IMO one good winger and a bombing left back will do so long as we get a CB to replace the cabbage that is Colo

    Jib/jeff,
Where in the rule book does it state that you are allowed to be critical while slating others for doing the same.

Think this is a smart deal as long as Thauvin is a genuine winger. Cabella is better playing central but he’s too far down the pecking order to be worth keeping

    Jib

Would you do a big favour and either post a translation of the non-English links you post or paraphrase them in Englsh, please.

A lot of these links lead to annoying sub-links to ads.

Can’t really argue that we haven’t been given money to spend this summer, I just wish the criteria had been more defense orientated.

How SM thinks colo, saylor (and willo) are fit for purpose based on the last 3 years defies belief . Manu must be licking their lips come Saturday.

Sadly I don’t think Cabella is ever going to make it in the PL so if we recoup some money in the Thauvin deal I guess we get a more specialist winger and set piece operator. Well that’s the theory . . . . !

Really don’t want another French pansy who doesn’t really want to be here and ending up on the bench in a couple of months because he’s not good enough.

Get some experience in! And a playmaker CM.

IF this rumor is true ..
I just wouldn’t understand why on earth didn’t we sign Shaqiri. A much better player than Thauvin, proven international star for his country (impressed in the WC), around the same price 12M, no major off field attitude issues, and oh still 23!! and did I say he’s a much better player??

So why Thauvin now and why let Cabella leave?!

This doesn’t make sense to me.

I find it all quite depressing – but tempered by the likelihood that it’s all bollocks anyway.
We need defenders. End of. Every other deal just takes us further away from that.
I just hope the club have stuff going on that the press haven’t picked up on because all this striker and winger stuff is bad news IMO.

IMO opinion Cabella can come good, and so can Rivi…which is why I don’t think we’ll ever buy Austin and why I think Cisse will be gone before the window shuts too.

Thauvin coming spells danger…at least 2 players have to leave for him to come in.

If money is so fcuking tight why are we even looking at this lad? We DESPERATLEY NEED A STRONG CENTRE BACK some who can organise who can defend and be a LEADER ON THE PITCH, We havent got that and we are not going to get it bring in another PL import we have to buy from within, Someone with PL experience, Richards was a miss he was imense the other night, Michael Dawson for me or Johnny Evans, Colo suffers the DAVID LUIZ syndrome of thinking hes a holding midfieder he cant defend to save his life let alone be the captain of the club, the weekend just showed captains are not undropable ask JT that rule should stand for everyone and colo should up for the chop, Mbeama cant play RB too thats very obvious Saylor should.

I think Carr’s reputation is on the line with this one. Thauvin was ineffectual at the weekend.
