We had reported yesterday the Sunday Mirror story that Florian Thauvin was now close – on the “verge” of – joining Newcastle, and the deal is said to be going through this week for somewhere in the region of
£12M – maybe a little more than that.
The news now is that Remy Cabella will be sent out on loan for the season to Marseilles as part of the deal, with a clause that he can be signed by the French club at the end of the season, and that rumor has been around for a few weeks now.
Florian Thauvin – becoming a Newcastle player?
Florian Thauvin has long been a target of Newcastle’s for a fee years, and in particular Chief Scout Graham Carr is very keen on him, so it could be that Newcastle bring in the winger this week, and in the process Remy Cabella will go the other way on loan.
But we’d still be surprised if Cabella is part of the deal, since Steve McClaren hasn’t even had a good look at him, and it always takes time to settle into the English way of playing football.
If this happens then it looks like Newcastle have already given up on Cabella.
And basically we’d be getting with Thauvin what we thought we were getting with Remy Cabella last year at this time – a promising young French winger – although Thauvin is not yet a full French International.
And remember that Cabella was brought to Newcastle last summer with great fanfare.
If you believe all the Twitter chatter then it’s a done deal – but we wonder.
Thauvin is very much like Cabella but he’s also good at set plays, and maybe that’s the big advantage that has attracted Newcastle to the very skillful French U21 International.
However, we still think our big weakness is in defense, and that’s been shown in our first two games, so if the Thauvin deal does go through, we’d still like to see a center-back and full back come through the door before September.
We should be able to get a full back in, but as far as a top center-back goes, with McClaren having put his faith in Coloccini, we’d be surprised if that happens.
If it does then where would Colo play – and he’s just been kept on as the Newcastle captain and leader of the side this season.
It will be good to get Thauvin in, but not at the expense of Remy Cabella, and we still need a couple of defenders to plug the weaknesses in the Newcastle side, which have been around now for three years.
What do you think?
