Newcastle After World-Class Defender – To Push Spending To £60M

We just have to hope this news is true that Newcastle want to sign Monaco center-back Aymen Abdennour, who we have been after all summer, and this player would be a tremendous signing for Newcastle, and would help shore up the Newcastle defense, which still seems to be our major weakness.

Aymen Abdennour – top class center-back

There’s a report today in La Provence saying that once Newcastle tie up long term target Florian Thauvin, who we appear to be buying for £12M and are throwing in Remy Cabella on loan for the season – Newcastle will then try to sign the big Tunisian International.

Some big clubs have been linked with Abdennour this summer, but the good news is that he has already indicated he would like to join Newcastle, and we were supposed to have already bid £12M for the center-back.

In early July his agent Abdelkader Jilani had said a number of clubs were interested in his client:

“Abdennour is one of the best defenders on the European stage and it’s only natural he is admired.” “There were some proposals from England and Spain, while in Italy there were only enquiries – so no official offer on the table or negotiations in progress.”

“At the moment he has a contract with Monaco, so anyone who wants him must speak to the Principality club. They deserve respect.” “What I can say right now is there is nothing concrete with Italian clubs – Italy is an option, but the right offer must come in.”

Obviously his agent is trying to play up interest there, but he had an excellent first full season for Monaco last term – and he is also very ambitious.

Abdennour already has Champions League football at Monaco, and has said more than once that he would only join a club that has Champions League football.

We heard that same statement from Aleksandar Mitrovic, who joined Newcastle last month.

The 25 year-old 6ft 2ins center-back was at Toulouse for three years before he signed on at Monaco in January of last year – initially on a loan deal – before he was transferred permanently to Monaco.

The 33 times capped Tunisian International has attracted the interest of some top clubs in Europe this summer, and if Newcastle can sign this defender he would be a tremendous signing for the club.

He would most certainly make the Newcastle defense a lot stronger than it is today, and he’s also a good header of the ball, excellent in the tackle and a very good all around central defender.

We’d be surprised if Newcastle can pull this one off, but if we can he will strengthen the Newcastle defense, which has got to be good news.

The defender will probably cost at least £15M,  so that would bring Newcastle’s spending this summer – if we get Thauvin in for £12M – to close to £60M.

Just think if we then sign Charlie Austin, we could raise the spending this summer to over £70M – which would be amazing to say the least.

Comments welcome.

More chance of Dunk than Abdennour. Monaco was around 15m for him, and he’ll want huge wages. In france theres talk of him moving to barca next summer… Also we already have 1 African CB. To sign a Tunisian may mean we lose our back 2 pairing for 6 weeks in AFCON!
Also got to think of our English quota as if we sign a CB then chances are a homegrown player is leaving….
Would love Abdennour, he’s absolute quality, to be honest he’s too good to be in a race for 8th-10th in the premier league. The guy would walk into every back 4 in the premier league outside of Man City’s (just signed otamendi, Kompany back in form, Mangala finally looking good)

2 ST 2 MD 2 DEF in seems to be the plan. Mitrovic/Austin, Gini/Thauvin and Mbemba/Aymen. I’d say AMEN to that.

I tend to think that there will be replacement for Colo anytime soon. Replacing him lclearly show that there are still those with poor judgement at the club/making – if he was dropped for someone else. I think they would accept a struggling defence for the season – just so they could save face.

This may or may not be true (I hope it is) but at least it shows, along with Thauvin, that we are looking to make more signings. I really thought that we would stop at the 3 new players!

Doesn’t matter about AFCON, it lasts 3 to 6 weeks depending where the nation’s get to, I’d be happy to do without for a few weeks seeing as they’ll have another 30 plus weeks at club.

Hope so he’s worth every penny but he must have countless offers.
He’s just the class CB who could make a big difference to our defence. I saw him a few times last season in the Champions League . He’s strong, quick ,good in the air and excellent movement and passing ability. A stand out performer. A host of clubs will be interested and Spurs were linked just a few weeks ago.

if we signed abdennour i would be over the moon ! our first 11 would/should be pushing for europe then (ofc injuries will happen though)

and thuavin will be a huge improvement on our wing but he’s not a top 6 player imo and mitrovic/mbemba/janmaat/wijnaldum/siem are better players !

Jayphoto just caught your pronunciation thing yes that’s how it sounds all right. Saying ‘ von’ though is a lazy English schoolkids way but if we get that out of a commentary it’ll be a big plus! I think they’d best leave ‘Florient’ alone altogether though 🙂

Probably total bollocks but would be over the moon if this lad came in. Not fussed about Thauvin though. I am still skeptical about this “deal” as well, and frankly if we are going to spend more, then make Monaco an offer they cant refuse for Abdennour before any other dealings because our shortcomings are so glaringly obvious.

Why do we only target overseas players whats wrong with home grown Michael Dawson is wasted in the championship he could really pull that bk 4 together. Micah Richards was imense against utd. From a young age players are coached to defend in england and then play wheres abroad they think like midfielders pass pass pass not willing to put the foot in where it hurts or take in the face and draw blood for the cause. I actually dont think they understand the art of defending and playing as a unit. Barking at each other. Colo is typical, David Luiz i could go on. Their is exceptions like Kompany and Ivanovic but they still learned their trade in England. I couldnt actually tell you the last good defender that palyed for nufc. Albert, Woodgate maybe?

@Tsunki – reckon Andy Townsend will have no chance! He hasn’t heard of a player if they’ve not played for a a top 4 club. Remember hearing him Similarly has anyone worked out how to say Wijnaldum yet?

I think we may have to bid more than 12m quid to land Abdennour. In a more recent article on a Spanish site, he really wants to go to Barcelona but if it doesn’t materialise, and it looks unlikely, he’s quoted as saying he wants to go a big club with ambition and – for no less than 20 m euros – and is only interested in La Liga and the Premier League. Says it’s not up to him, the club president/director will decide if the price and club are right and whether the two parties (buying and selling club) agree. Though it would be great if he would sign for us…

I see why we are buying strikers and midfielders firstly. They usually cost the most so it makes sense. So I expect defence to be the last priority. But as much as I think the plan is okay, I also think it’s being put into place a little late.
Thauvin to supply the ammo for Mitrovic is fine. Wini to fill the cabaye void is fine. But it all should of been in place two weeks ago minimum with the final touches of back up to Haidera, Janmaat and Colo being sorted as we talk.
