Newcastle Begin Task Of Moving Players Out

8:03 pm, Tuesday, August 18th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 94 Comments

With less than two weeks left of the summer transfer window we should see players starting to leave Newcastle who are excess to requirements.

Remy Cabella will be joining on loan to Marseille as part of he deal to bring Florian Thauvin to Newcastle, but we see Florian as big a risk as Remy was when he came in a year ago.

We’ll just have to hope Thauvin adjusts better than Remy was able to.

Mehdi Abeid Sheffield+United+v+Newcastle+United+HuEZYIF-5XCl

Mehdi Abeid in action at Sheffield United

And it looks like Mehdi Abeid is set to join Panathinaikos full time,  after he had such an excellent season on loan with them the season before last when he scored 10 goals in 38 appearances for them – so this should be a good move for the 23 year-old Algerian International.

The transfer fee is said to be around £1.5M to £2M, and he is said to be having his medical today.

We were hoping that Mehdi would have made it at Newcastle,  but with Gini Wijnaldum coming in and Cheick Tiote staying at Newcastle, he wouldn’t get too many chances at the club – and it will be a good move for him to Panathinaikos.

We should see more players moving out for small fees or out on loan in the next 13 days, principally to keep the wage bill under control.

Players who could be moving include Yoan Gouffran, Haris Vuckic, Mike Williamson, Rob Elliot, Gael Bigirimana and Sylvain Marveaux.

Comments welcome.

    Hmm… Ashley out??? 😉

  • 2 Sliema // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:11 PM

Can’t really make my mind up about Tiote, never could really. He’s poor on the ball, head down and always looking backwards, I always got a bit annoyed with Scott Parker when he played for us for similar reasons but at least he could pick out a pass to split defenders, can’t recall Tiote ever managing that.

We do need someone with presence in the holding role though, Colback and Anita are shoved about too much, but Tiote just doesnt offer much.

Thauvin – shite and looks like like Shelvey with a hair transplant

What about starting moving the players in we need 😀

…we are still short of a CB and a striker. A young RB wouldn’t hurt either!

Am I alone in seeing no benefit in the Thauvin deal?

  • 10 ronaldo aarons // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:27 PM

Been a fan of abeid since I first saw him play for newcastle, albeit in pre season. Bad move to a let him go IMO as he has a lot of potential and if given games can do a very good job. I’ll always remember him dominate yaya toure lol, haven’t seen anyone do that do him physically. Leaves us light in midfielder wijnaldum is playing primarily as a 10 with de jong and Sissoko being utilised as a winger. We’re left with Anita, colback and tiote, well unless they start giving kemen games I guess.

  • 11 JackButler // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:28 PM

Players will start to move out but I expect the usual suspect will remain when they should be shown the door

Starting to think that some of them have performed a Jedi Mind Trick to be able to stay this bloody long

  • 12 Ron Knee // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:29 PM

    Another cracker.

  • 13 Llort muw // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:30 PM

Why complain about this signing? He can only help our squad whether that is in terms of first team quality or competition for places. We should all be glad that we have actually spent around £49 million this window with the possibility of more, Ashley lived up to his words.

  • 14 toonicle // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:31 PM

Plenty of benefit in the Thauvin deal Switch. Risky buying young and banking on potential, but either one of them would fit that statement. Difference being Thauvin actually plays in a role we need to fill, whereas Cabella is a central attacking player behind the striker who was shoehorned into playing RW and wasn’t any good at it. Can’t remember one decent cross he put in all of last year, no tracking back, useless stepovers followed by a stumble and gives a breakaway down the right to the other team.

  • 15 WWSBRD // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:32 PM

Problem is signing Thauvin does neither add competition or first team quality because we are losing Cabella in order to sign him

  • 16 STB // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:32 PM

More of a Laurent Robert than Cabella ever could have been. Cabella is tailor made for Ligue 1 and not premier league. I’m sure he’ll be a great buy for OM.
As for Thauvin, he has more pace, a great left foot and could fit in perfectly on the left of a 4231. OM tried to play him in w no 10 role this season as they had no other options. He is not a no 10. Fans will need to cut him some slack in opening matches but let’s be honest, between having a right footed Obertan on the left or Thauvin, who would most people prefer to try?
I do think this may mean we could cash in on Sissokho which would give Aarons the chance to establish himself on the right and get us a decent CB with the money. I’d prefer we keep Sissokho but if we could get a top CB I’d take the compromise. Aarons and Thauvin with wijnaldum and De Jong if ever he stays fit should have enough to create chances for mitrovic.

  • 17 JackButler // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:33 PM

Don’t expect too many crosses from Thauvin as he always cuts inside

  • 18 BeeGuy // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:33 PM

An in form Tiote allows a 4-1-3-2 formation. While he is no genius with the ball, Chuck has a nose for where play is going and can break things up. With him on top of his game, NUFC can sit Anita and Colbeck and play two strikers. Ain’t two strikers what we want?

  • 19 Llort muw // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:33 PM

So suprised that fans are writing him off before he has even had a chance, we’re clearly building for the future. Mitrovic, Wijnaldum, Mbemba and now Thauvin are all young along with Perez, Toney, Aarons and Armstrong. We still have the experience to make sure these players make it which is why I’m convinced this 3 transfer window plan is going to work. I’m personally very very excited for the future.

  • 20 lochinvar // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:33 PM

Shearer statue – made in China ?
Would last longer if made in Bronze.
And how come there was no one in the north-east who could have made it ?
Shepherd commissioned it so that’s his prerogative.
If we put him on the pitch might even score from a corner.

And if he arrives late August does that beat the transfer deadline ?,

  • 21 spaghetti bandit // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:35 PM

  • 22 Noel Worst // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:37 PM

Thauvin is average at everything. Not one outstanding asset to his game, anybody that says otherwise is kidding themselves.

People are bothered because we know there isn’t a bottomless pit of money and the club has got it’s priorities all wrong.

  • 23 Llort muw // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:37 PM

Imagine this team in three years time:

    New CB

  • 24 Mag52 // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:40 PM

Memphis Depay will be a threat to our defence at the weekend. He’s already netted two at half time and could end up with a few more before the match is over.
I sense an Old Trafford tonking.

  • 25 cestriasteve // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:41 PM

That’s my thoughts, I had my reservations about Cabella and we never played him in his true position anyway. Thauvin will come good but I would prefer a better LB than Hairdryer if he’s playing on the left.
All those people who say he’s the same stature as Cabella, your wrong he’s bigger than Cabella, not physical for a player of 5’10 but he’s not as fragile as Cabella.

JB is right like he doesn’t cross it much.

  • 26 switch365 // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:41 PM

    Cheers Toonicle,

I’ve not looked at him, whereas Cabella I watched quite a bit of during the 13/14 season.
Personally I feel Obertan is our only ‘real’ right winger and playing him on the left instead of Aarons is a terrible idea. Would rather have kept Cabella who is now a year more experienced and used the money to go towards bringing in a top quality cb.

  • 27 WWSBRD // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:43 PM

Yeah that team is never going to happen

  • 28 JackButler // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:47 PM

My biggest reservation about signing Thauvin is that it will be at the expense of upgrading our back line.

If, and it’s a big IF, he can regain his form and confidence, as he was appalling last season in France, he could do a job, but it seems our priorities are all wrong in the players we are trying to sign as the biggest flaws in the squad are still there and don’t look like being addressed. There will come a point and Thauvin could be that point where there is no more money to spend and to be honest we haven’t really done that much to plugs the obvious gaps

  • 29 jazzyp // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:48 PM

Not that I am not grateful of another first team signing coming in. But I do find it very strange why Nufc have continued there pursuit of Thauvin to great lengths .
This position to everyone is not exactly a position we need strengthening .
We could have kept Cabella, gave him another season while the development of Aarons continues. Which frees up the fee sanctioned for a much needed Defender.

  • 30 cestriasteve // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:50 PM

I know he’s injured like and a pretty serious injury too but a fit clement grenier would have been nice. Great player.

  • 31 Llort muw // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:51 PM

Why won’t it happen? Is your expertise being able to see in the future?

Not taking a shot I’m just wondering why you shot my team selection down so quickly haha.

  • 32 Our Toon // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:51 PM

How can anyone complain about a player joining. The only similarities between Thauvin and Cabella are that they are both French. Ones a proper winger the other plays in no 10 role. A club that’s been deprived it’s supporters of signings and these very people are now twisting over signing someone who’s replacing a serious dud from last season.

Yes we need defenders but also need goal providers and the lads a set piece taker something we are massively lacking

with respect i think wenger may just be a tad better judge of a player than you and he says ” Thauvin is the future of french football”

  • 36 toonicle // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:54 PM

Switch i’ll agree there, back 4 should have gotten some money splashed before we looked at wingers. If we can still get a LB in this window though i’ll be happy, grab another CB in January hopefully once Steve is convinced Colo can’t cut it anymore.

  • 37 Our Toon // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:54 PM

I would have kept even 2m is a snip for him. I’d get rid of Anita worth more and doesn’t have the right qualities

  • 38 JackButler // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:57 PM

    Rotonda heights

In 2013 Thauvin was regarded as having the most potential in French football, his star was rising and people talked about a massive future ahead of him.

In the 2014/15 season he was voted in the worse 11 in French football and the back end of the 2013/14 season wasn’t anything to right home about either and we are paying up to 15 million for the lad?

Don’t think people would mind to much if the rest of the team was sorted but it’s far from that right now.

  • 39 toonicle // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:58 PM

Our Toon- Yes something people seem to be overlooking is that Thauvin is a hell of a free kick taker. We’ve been missing that since Cabaye. I’d love to see Mitro get on the end of a few of his kicks this season.

  • 40 jazzyp // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:59 PM

Well welcome to Newcastle united Mr Thauvin.
Hope you prove the Doubters wrong and prove to be a massive player for us.
Albeit a massive turnaround, looks like he will be a Toon player come tomorrow

  • 41 toonicle // Aug 18, 2015 at 8:59 PM

Jack- Thauvin was played out of position a lot last year, asked to play a No. 10 instead of out wide.

  • 42 WWSBRD // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:00 PM

Because mate if Gini, Mitrovic and Mbemba are any good they will be sold off for profit within the next 3 seasons. Woodman will be away when his contracts up heading down South and Kemen is already wanting away so by next year he is gone when his contract is over, Sterry wont make it to the first team

Aarons will either disappear or be sold depending on his success, either way wont be in the first team in 3 years.

Ur also filling the team with youth teamers when we have a terrible track record of bringing through young players, u have 7 in that team mate and I can recall 1 we have brought through of any note and that was mainly due to a spell in the Championship

So nope bud that team is never going to happen

  • 43 JackButler // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:00 PM

Depay and Shaw could have a field day against our stand in right back the weekend, if only we had a second right back at the club

  • 44 SUTTY1978 // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:01 PM

Buying Thauvin is mental and shows Graham Carr has too much power, he’s the only one that wants him. 99% of the fans are at best not fussed one way or the other. He was half decent for 6 months 2 1/2 years ago but has been utter shite ever since, he’s about the same quality as Obertan and will fail spectacularly in the premier league. What a frickin waste of money, it disgusts me, another player with zero creativity, carr only looks for players who take pot shots, never looks at the players that set them up. Awful, awful signing

  • 45 Ibizatoon // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:01 PM

Our Toon…I was just browsing and you’ve sucked me in.

Get rid of Anita…he doesn’t have the right qualities?!?

Really? Firstly, I think he’s going to be an important player for us this season. When used properly (ish), in a team set up properly (ish) he has done really well (not an ish, but an imo). He had the right abilities in that West Ham game, that can’t be in doubt? Surely then it’s just a question of getting said abilities out on the pitch consistently?

No reflection on Abeid. I’d have liked to see him stay too. I can think of people I’d be getting rid of before either of those two.

  • 46 Noel Worst // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:01 PM

    With disrespect:

So he’s better than Pogba in that case I guess? Hahaha, we’ll see. I love how people appeal to authority so readily in football. If he’s so good, why isn’t Wemger interested himself? Why didn’t we sign him initially instead of Cabella when he was available much cheaper and not coming off the back of 2 crap seasons?

All this talk of pace and a great left-foot is nonsense, he’s much slower than Obertan and Aarons, plus all this talk of a great left-foot is baloney, hasn’t got any great technical qualities and is a bit of a knobhead.

  • 47 JamesToon // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:02 PM

People doubting Thauvin and saying the clubs got its priorities wrong. What if we are working on a deal to bring in a top class defender? Maybe if there’s a delay or something e.g VVD waiting to see after celtics CL match, and we get other deals done such as thauvin

  • 48 Rotonda heights // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:02 PM

i know it doesn’t seem like a priority and yes i would be far happier with an abdennour, rutiger, van dijk, matip, dunk etc but if we recoup 8M for cabella, then a net 6M on a 22 year old who could come good again doesn’t look so bad

  • 49 JackButler // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:02 PM

No mate he played his favoured position down the flanks, or at least he did in the ten or so games I watched him play, there was talk of him being switched to a No#10 role this season, but the manager walking out after a game put pay to that

Dont mind people trying to big up some of the players we buy but be realistic, no one in our team is capable of creating chances on a regular basis, most of them cant pass more than 20 yards.

I’d have no issue with him coming here if the starting eleven was sorted, and who knows maybe it will be, but right now it looks like we are trying to out the roof on the house before we’ve built the foundations.

I’d like to think that behind the scenes we are working on bringing in a CB and right back cover, but this is NUFC under Ashley and so I’m well versed in expecting the worst 🙁

  • 60 Moonraker15 // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:10 PM

All those who can’t see Thauvin as a step up from Cabella haven’t been watching Cabella! He will never make it in the PL as he isn’t good enough simply!

The only player who gets away with all those useless step overs is C.Ronaldo and he would be better without them! How many step overs does David Silva or Sergio Agrerro try? None!

Thauvin is more direct and should hopefully create more chances.

I don’t understand how anyone can be negative about our signings! You have to be happy moaning to be negative now. I’m sure another defender is coming as well.

The team spirit and support should be good for Man U and I’m surprised how confident I am about getting something there; let’s face it they ain’t world beaters it’s only their reputation that we have to fear!

One last point, wasn’t van Gaal Barca’s manager when we beat them when Tino scored his hat trick?

  • 61 Llort muw // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:11 PM

These players are coming up through a differently run Newcastle team. The setup has changed and who knows? That could be a big difference to how the youngsters do.

Yes, past history could suggest that these players won’t make it,but having a different coaching set up could be exactly what was needed. With respect I think your focusing on the past too much and not with what we have now.

I agree with the players being sold if they are too good for us, that’s always going to happen. But as long as we take example from Southampton and sign the correct replacements then there is no reason why we can’t have a team similar to that in the future.

Yes the team was far-fetched, but it’s an example of what could be if Ashley continues to show this ambition.

On a side note, I really hope that we are still concentrating on signing a defender, I kind of believe that they are because if he is willing to spend £49 million on 4 players what’s stopping him from signing another?

  • 62 toon kk // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:11 PM

There’s a lot of mixed opinions on here about Thauvin, let’s give the lad a chance, he’s bound to be better than a lot of the dead wood we have.
Mitrovic has hardly shone in the game time he’s had a part from proving he knows how to collect yellow cards. Personally we should be looking for a bit more experience instead of resale value always a major factor.

  • 63 Our Toon // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:12 PM

If we’d kept Cabella he would have been used, we’d have to pay an additional 5m in add ons as part of deal with montpellier.

The way I see it Thauvin is costing us 4.2m, 5m saved on Cabella add ons and 5.8m transfer fee if he signs permanently for them

  • 64 JackButler // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:13 PM

  • 65 JamesToon // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:13 PM

Would like to see Callum Roberts brought through soon as well. People seem to have forgotten about him recently

  • 66 ronaldo aarons // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:13 PM

I don’t think he played number 10 much last year but if he did it can’t be out of position when the player himself came out and stated he prefers playing behind the striker because there is less defending to do.

As for wenger stating he is the future of French football, it’s important to remember he was always glowing about Ben arfa saying he is the most gifted or talented player in his group of players i.e. Ribery, benzema etc.high praise indeed but it’s down to the player and it takes a lot more than talent/ability to succeed. Not sure if thauvin has what it takes but would love to be proved wrong.

  • 67 mickalfas // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:15 PM

  • 68 SUTTY1978 // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:16 PM

Moonraker, thats like saying obertan is an upgrade on cabella, maybe he is but would you be happy if we were buying him from someone else? I guarantee he will be on everyones “out” list come January.
Jack, how many of those goals and assists were from his magnificent set pieces? That record of 4+5 is about the same as the famous creator Colback managed for us last season from def midfield.

  • 69 geordieboy83 // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:17 PM

I’m gutted to see cabella go, but thauvin is in my opinion a big upgrade in terms of what the team needs. He will literally get buns off seats, and yeah will frustrate aswell.

Granted another cb would be nice but there is no chance in hell I will be complaining as we have certainly moved the goal posts Imo in terms of calibre of player this year.

We have been trying to get him for 3 years mate, but he wanted to stay in France so that’s why we didn’t get him and got cabella instead

  • 70 ronaldo aarons // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:18 PM

I don’t think people are just not willing to give him a chance, it’s to do with the fact that we need defenders first and foremost and with reports coming out saying this deal with thauvin will be the last big money deal then you can’t help but question if we really need a winger before anything else. And I’ve been wanting a winger for over a year but can see we need another cb at least and a couple of full backs. Plus we don’t have great defensive cover in midfield.

  • 71 Llort muw // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:18 PM

I really find it hard to believe that we are rejecting a player before he has even shown us what he can do. We always complain at the lack of signings(I’m included) and yet when we sign players we complain because of one reason or another.

I don’t have a problem with people having there reservations about a player, but complaining about the club trying to improve the squad-which we was complaining about the club not doing in the first place- is ridiculous.

At least they are trying, lets hope we can sign a defender after this signing is completed.

  • 72 geordieboy83 // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:18 PM

  • 73 Ibizatoon // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:20 PM

Moonraker…If you don’t understand something, how can you come to such a conclusion?

Anyway, not sure I’ve seen too much negativity on the signings we’ve made. It’s more the signings we haven’t. People are only nervous that with another high profile signing, which this would be, in an area that is let’s say not highest priority, that other areas may get neglected.

It’s not negativity. It’s what we’ve come to expect.

  • 74 WWSBRD // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:20 PM

Youth team set up hasn’t changed mate. I really dont see us bringing through players with any regularity

As for ambition Ashley has no footballing ambition imo and hes done nothing to make me think he does

As for CB I dont see it happening unless we lose numbers at the back

  • 75 ronaldo aarons // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:20 PM

I do go with the fact that we must see something in him that others don’t considering we have been after him for some time. Even after every no we got from the club and player.

  • 76 dogfish // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:21 PM

It would be a shame if abeid left. I thought he looked really good last season would have him ahead of Anita and tiote

  • 77 Llort muw // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:22 PM

And you believe everything the papers say? No-one but the Newcastle board know if there will be anymore signings after this one so I wouldn’t make a judgement off of some paper trying to manipulate stories. The paper could be right, but i honestly doubt they have this knowledge and inside information on the clubs transfer business.

Geordieboy, 3 years ago he looked very promising. 3 years ago Colo looked half decent. Things change, both are utter shite now.

I think Armstrong loan is only until Jan anyway mate

  • 80 JackButler // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:23 PM

My stance on the current potential signing is this.

    Thauvin – £12 million

van Dyjk and young undertaudy at righback – £12 million

I’d say the same for Austin or any other striker or winger you could throw into the mix, we can’t ignore the obvious issues with the squad for the joy of signing another player, the cynic in me says that Thauvin will happen in the hope that he comes good and can be sold off for a good profit for old Mikey

  • 81 Llort muw // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:25 PM

Oh, thought there had been some changes… My bad.

However it does seen like McClaren is having an impact on there futures considering Woodman and Armstrong getting loan deals.

  • 82 ronaldo aarons // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:27 PM

I didn’t say I believed it, I was just getting the point across that the report says it will be the last big money deal and fans can’t help get a little nervous with our clubs track record of leaving areas of the team exposed.

  • 83 jane // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:27 PM

it doesn’t make sense to extend Coloccini’s contract and then buy 2 expensive CBs, it’s not going to happen!

  • 84 mickalfas // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:29 PM

Look on the bright side ,Thauvin wouldn’t be in the worst 11 in France ,if we could get rid of the dross we have in our squad from France

  • 85 Our Toon // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:30 PM

Thierry Henry was shocking in Italy he was a failure. Diego Forlan was shocking at man utd but went on to great things and was in the top 5 or 10 strikers for some time. Veron class in Italy shit at man utd. Di maria pants at man utd. Kaka was immense in Italy and failed big time at Madrid. Ibrahimovic failed at Barca but has been a success everywhere else.

Bottom line Cabella needed to be replaced Andre Ayew has already surpassed Cabella’s contribution to the entirety of last season in only 2 games for Swansea! !

  • 86 Jail for Ashley // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:30 PM

    James Toon,
Van Dijk is the type of player we’d maybe go after before Celtic bought him, we would not have paid 8/10M for Tiote if Celtic had already paid 4M and had the bargain.

  • 87 Moonraker15 // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:32 PM

What’s to understand about good players coming in and mediocre ones going out?

We’ve got one excellent defender in and another coming plus Mitrovic and Wijnaldum as well as Thauvin! WTF are we negative about? And by the way if you don’t know, I have been the biggest critic the last few years.

The other bonus is the coach and his team; you could be lumbered with freakin Pardew !!!

  • 88 geordieboy83 // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:34 PM

The other thing is I think by no more big money signings they mean 10 mil plus. Cb’s beneath that price are very available
    Curtis Davies
    Lewis dunk

To name a few so not all hope is gone just yet

  • 89 JamesToon // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:36 PM

    Geordie boy

Would definitely like any of the top 3 but really don’t know anything about vestermen

  • 91 padthemag // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:55 PM

Weren’t all the neggers saying that was it after mbemba and now we got another player in to supply our forwards I’m sure half the people on here want to see us fail, it’s the 1st time in years we brought any decent players in so pipe down until the window shuts and sm has had a few games to put his stamp on the team and maybe even a bit of support !!!!!

  • 92 custurd // Aug 18, 2015 at 11:12 PM

£1.5 mill for Abeid? £2.8 mill for Santon? Ben Arfa £nowt. £5 mill for Mbiwa? We’re virtually giving players away in positions that need to be strengthened and seem happy to pay double or treble (or more) their value for replacements that are half as good at worst or unproven at best. That’s if replacements are sought at all. Absolute madness.

  • 93 walkerwhite // Aug 19, 2015 at 7:35 AM

We should get rid of all the foreigners (apart from the adopted one’s) and step up the grassroots and drop a league or three in the process I’d be much more happier.
