With th signing of Florian Thauvin today Newcastle have brought their gross spending to over £50M this summer, and it is certainly a crucial transfer window for the club, after we only just avoided relegation last season in the very last game of the season.
It seems that Mike Ashley was shocked by our fall down the table under interim coach John Carver, and before the last game against West Ham he pledged to spend big money this summer – and he’s done that.
The latest arrival – Florian Thauvin for £14M
John Carver and Steve Stone were fired in June after their very poor performance in charge of the team, when John Carver seemed to argue with most players and said some ludicrous things in front of the TV cameras.
Those comments embarrassed John but also since he was representing Newcastle – it embarrassed the club too.
Steve McClaren has come in to take over as the permanent head coach, but it will not be easy for McClaren and his impressive coaching staff to turn things around.
We saw some of that when we were outplayed at Swansea on Saturday – so we still have work to do to start turning things around and fans will have to be a little patient – which is never easy.
But Newcastle, maybe for the first time under owner Mike Ashley, are showing some ambition and intent – and we just hope the new players gel with the team quickly, so we can start picking up some wins – sooner rather than later.
Here are the transfers so far this season – they are estimates – but they come to a gross of £50.35M.
[table “39” not found /]Newcastle’s signings this summer – so far
We should be able to get some money back so that the net spending is less than £50M.
Mehdi Abeid signed for Panathinaikos today for a fee thought to be about £1.5M, and once Remy Cabella plays a certain number of games for Marseille, the transfer for around £7M will be triggered automatically.
Others could also leave for fees before September including players like Mike Williamson, Haris Vuckic, Sylvain Marveaux, Gael Bigirimana and Yoan Gouffran.
There’s also a chance Newcastle can still bring players in – and we’d love to see a top center-back signed in the next 12 days.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #81Im not so sure that playing with just one striker suit’s our un creative squad.
I can’t believe how much some people are writing off Thauvin before he’s even kicked a ball. Is it because the money wasn’t spent on a defender. Colo was classed as our main defensive signing.

Comment #84Cabella and Perez had the most natural understanding of any pairing of players last season. No good playing those two when we were playing hoofball all season though. Under a more progressive manager they would be able to rip teams apart. McClaren is not the man for that job anyway, he likes a big man up top too.

Cisse is a goalscorer but contributes nothing to the team build up as his touch is bad and he can’t hold the ball up.
Mitrovic is gonna score goals as is Wijnaldum and Ayoze eventually !

A net spend argument? Oh dear lord really? Have we not all gotten past that yet? Ur going to base ur belief on the clubs spending because we haven’t sold anyone yet?

I agree Cabella was played out of position but even still he showed absolutely nothing in way of an attacking threat. Doesn’t matter the set up or style of play, when you have the ball you have to show some sort of quality, the ability to pick killer passes, ability to shoot or taking on players. He showed nothing at all, Sammy showed more than him

Comment #94Cabella hasn’t been given a full chance but I def think Thauvin is more suited to the premier league and our team.
I think it’s he can shake the fan stigma the fans could love him if he shows his potential a bit.
In Aarons and thauvin and sissoko and gabby we now have wingers that will run at defences.
I dont think its a case of nufc wanting rid of cabella more they preferred thauvin and so used cabella to make the deal happen.
Cabella wasn’t a winger as many have said and we already have de Jong and Gini for no ten along with sissoko playing there. Not to mention that we don’t need a no ten if we play two up top.
So on paper we have actually gotten a player that better suits our needs in a proper wide man.

Comment #95The money spent was something which was going to happen at some point to shit the locals up though for a little while, also the lack of spending over the years means the squad still needs a massive overhaul.

Comment #96Everyone can see cabella had talent but at the same time it wasn’t just a case of him being too weak.
He was fashion over function. Always trying to do too much. I wonder if he was trying too hard to replace ben arfa.
There were those comments from his dad about not coming in January because he didn’t want to be “cabayes replacement”

Comment #100Happy we got Thauvin in but slightly sad we didn’t give Cabella a real chance..perhaps signing Cabella was part of a long game to get Thauvin? Defo need some CB class. Mbemba has pace but no height even if he has a leap. Abdennour and Rudiger would have been the dream.

Comment #101One or two of the disgraced pro Percy Brigade hovering around the blog tonight and a couple from the Flat Earth Society.
Cannot believe that some are still “promoting” King Percy when our new coach Wally has in not so many words called King Percy a liar (viz the Colo bid affair).
King Percy -touchline thug, abuser of other managers, womanizer, no tactical know how, win dedicator to Mr Tubbs, and now accused of lying.
Fans have to get off the fence and support Wally not the juju lipped jellied eel eating chancer from Cockneyland.

Cisse does what he’s employed to do and that put the ball in the back of the net, so much so that we would have been relegated on more than one occasion if not for his goals.
You cannot advocate the likes of Mitrovic or Perez replacing him at this point in time if he were to be sold as that type of gamble/risk is beyond imagining.
You said we could sell any four players and not miss them, or words to that effect, what about Krul, Jaanmatt, Cisse, Sissoko, Anita, Coldback, Colo, Mbemba etc etc etc etc
Our best 11 may not be the best but take out our better p,ayers and those coming in are weak.
I don’t want to see a team that has Obertan, Willo and Saylor etc etc etc starting every week.
We’ve brought in five good signings, but as a squad we are still weak or unproven beyond our best 11

Can’t argue with you in regards to the poor season Thauvin had. What were the mitigating factors behind that poor season though?
One of the best strikers to have ever graced the PL Mr Henry was a failure at Juve. Forlan was a failure in the prem but a massive success in Spain. Sometimes players play better in different leagues, new surroundings etc.
Thauvin is 22 so no doubt we’ve bought him with potential of big money sale in mind and the hope of him becoming a better player here.

Comment #108Cisse gets alot of stick on here for his all round game, it’s no where near as bad as some make it out to be. If you want pretty hold up play and linking play then we have Riviere, if we’d played him all of last season we’d of been relegated. Cisse is like Ian Rush or Inzaghi type of forward, goals are all that matter amd that’s the way it should be.
Cisse is the one who dunked the ball over the full back for obertan to cross and Wij to score. Cisse is the one who crossed for Colo when he was unlucky it came off yoshida hand but was never a pen.

Cisse did quite a few Good things other than score when attacking in the counter that went unnoticed.
For the large part I agree. Cisse reliably gets goals I say it’s the team that needs to help him out more than him helping the team. He would go missing if the team behind him could control a game and attack with purpose more.

Comment #112Make weight deals: Trying to be Carr,
Rolan 12m = 8m + Goufrann.
Abdennour 15m = 9m + Rivere.
Squad:
GK: Krul, Darlow, Elliot
RB: Janmaat
LB: Dummett, Haidara
CB: Abdennour, Mbemba, Colo, Taylor, Lasceles
CM: Wijnaldum, Colback, Anita, Tiote
CAM: Sissoko, De Jong
WF: Thauvin, Perez, Aarrons, Obertan
CF: Mitrovic, Cisse, Rolan
Charnely, Carr and Mcca make it happen. There I can be optimistic for Top 8.

Comment #116Really unsure about all the negativity surrounding Thauvin.
I really like Cabella but he is not built for the wing and has two better players ahead of him in the CAM role. It doesn’t make sense for us to have someone we spend a fair chunk of money on sat on the bench.
I think the club has done well to bring in Thauvin who is more suited to playing on the wing and may supply us with the width we’re lacking.
Another defender would be nice but at the end of the day this is Newcastle, and defending has never really been our forte. I’d rather see us lose an exciting 4-3 than a boring 1-1 tbh
