It’s not so much the transfer fees but the wage bill that is the biggest thorn in the balance sheet. So removing players from that bill will be vital to maintain our financial clout. But putting our current spend into context it still means we have under spent over the last four years to the tune of £115m when you include money coming from transfers, gate money, sponsorship and TV rights. So yes £50m is a vast improvement but still a way to go for catch up !

Five good signings now. This squad is finally very close to being deep and balanced enough to bear the weight and pressure of the club policy of only buying young and talented players as and when they become available, and offering those long contracts. It finally has the look of a squad and an approach that is finally up and running. I’m very interested in what Ashley does from here. If it continues, we can realistically hope to do well.

if only one starts a rumour then I doubt but when many sources cover same story, such as the Thauvin one then I tend to believe them. No smoke without fire!

He’s a near world class CB, as is kurzawa but looks like he’s going to psg

Well Celtic made it difficult for themselves tonight. I was out with the Mrs and had a bit craic with a Celtic fan who was watching the game.
    Down here on business. ….
Reckons Virgin is the business and they are gutted if he leaves.
Suggested PL different kettle of fish to SPL but suggests he would be able to play in prem no bother.
If we signed him that is..

Floriian is clearly a clever guy . He’s delighted to be joining such a big club as Newcastle and his girlfriend’ s family make a really good beer to have with pasta. Sensible chap. Welcome !

I was going to say in the nicest possible way he comes across a bit loopy.

    Nice loopy though like Ketsbia

  • 23 Mag_jack // Aug 19, 2015 at 11:16 PM

Sorry to bring up abdennour again but If this mouth watering deal happens (and why can’t it) it COULD sort out our defensive problems. COULD before anyone jumps down my throat.
    With a back line of

Jannmaat mbemba adbennour haidara/Jan transfer target/anita/dummett
And since colo is pretty much untouchable moved to cdm like I know some of you have said in the past. Colo isn’t exactly known for his attacking prouess so could sit back allowing our full backs to press

    Janmaat adbennour mbemba haidara
    Colo Colback
    Sissoko wijnaldum thauvin

    De Jong

  • 24 ITUNDERASHELL // Aug 19, 2015 at 11:18 PM

  • 28 LocalZero // Aug 19, 2015 at 11:23 PM

Thauvin swap (plus £5m) for cabella is a sensible enough move to me. Not such a gamble. 3 yrs younger, 3 inches taller and didn’t fail to establish last year. I’m not so sure we need so much investment in defense. Surely part of the reason we’ve been turned over so many times in 3yrs is we’ve had no forwards or creativity to occupy the opposition?!

  • 29 ITUNDERASHELL // Aug 19, 2015 at 11:25 PM

Abdennour would make an incedible pairing with Mbember. Add willems and WOW.

  • 30 ITUNDERASHELL // Aug 19, 2015 at 11:26 PM

Can you imagine Arons and Thauvin ripping defences apart with Gini behind Mitrovic.

  • 31 thegaffer // Aug 19, 2015 at 11:27 PM

Willems is Wini’s close friend.. plus he visited St. James’ alone just to watch his friend.. so NUFC just has to pay a fee here.. the lad has his heart here already.

  • 32 will die for the toon army // Aug 19, 2015 at 11:28 PM

We have had one of the worst defence since relegation season. Even wen we finished 5th we had a goal difference of +5.

We need a new CB. COLO is good but we will b taking a risk Chelsea have taken on Terry and Ivanovic.

Betty, @ 47 – a fair comment, for sure. However bringing in a solid CB, over and above what we have today, would be a major signal of intent. It would effectively leave Collo as No 1 Back-up CB which would probably suit him down to the ground. It would also mean that apart from a class LB, e have a fairly good defence!!

  • 53 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:07 AM

You’ve got to ask serious questions of our recruitment team when Cabella was the long sought after, big money signing, and he’s gone already. It doesn’t instil me any confidence in them, especially old Mr Carr. I wouldn’t trust them with my millions (if I had any).

  • 54 Graeme // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:11 AM

Blackley – can fully understane exactly where you’re coming from with that one!!!!

  • 55 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:12 AM

If tonight’s tv highlights are anything to go by, we need to stay well clear of Van Diyk. Of course, if we ever move into the world of half time circus entertainment, he and Colo would make a great 5 minute warm up act.

  • 56 Jail for Ashley // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:14 AM

  • 59 bettyswallocks // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:19 AM

Austin scored tonight. That’s his second of the season!

  • 60 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:24 AM

I think the right way to go is to get a quality winger to supply Mitrovic (and Austin I very much hope). I hope Aarons can make a career of it on one side. Is Thauvin the man for the other? It doesn’t seem like it if bloggers on here are anything to go by. There’s none of the usual excitement for a new signing. That said, there was loads for Cabella. Unwarranted in hindsight.

It’s said we’re desperate for a CB. We’ve got more options at CB than at any other position. Mbemba, Dummett, Janmaat, Lascelles, Taylor, Colo, Willo, Good. We’ve got very few options at full back. I prefer Dummett and Janmaat in the centre.

  • 61 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:25 AM

We definitely needed a winger. We shouldn’t have got rid of Cabella though. He wouldn’t been awesome behind the striker. At least we have Marveaux though.

To be ready for this season, we need to sign Willems/Guerriero/Kurzawa, Van Dijk/Adbennour, Diego Rolan/Mauro Zarate.

  • 62 matt11_25 // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:29 AM

Poor Cabella was Pardewed to be fair. Never played in his best position.

  • 63 bettyswallocks // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:33 AM

Apparently Austin wasn’t even happy that he scored tonight. I think his heed’s been turned.

  • 64 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:33 AM

    Jail @56
Not sure what you mean? I’m pro Ashley in some things he does, and anti in others. I reckon if someone else had done exactly what Ashley had done in terms of club financing and player transactions but had tried his best throughout to keep the fans involved and on board with a top PR campaign, bending over backwards to explain the plans, he’d be viewed quite favourably.

  • 65 Toon-Prodigy // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:34 AM

Cabella is surplus. Wini and De jong are here. We don’t need another no 10. Thauvin is a great bit of business.

Does make you wonder though why buy them all when we are crying out for other positions. But that’s the sell on policy rather than buying for positions and building. Like Anita as an example.

The manager will cop it sooner or later because of the unbalance in the squad.

Whilst there is no sales it’s looking decent in mid and upfront though.

Thauvin’s lass is alreet aswell, footballers!

  • 66 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:36 AM

… including treating the fans with the utmost respect instead of like trash …

  • 67 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:38 AM

The sell on policy can be applied in all positions so you haven’t convinced me on that argument yet.

  • 68 Novocastrian66 // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:40 AM

The emergence of Perez is what has done for Cabella. Perez jumped ahead of him last season. Cabella is behind three to get a start in his favoured position, that’s why he had to go, unfortunately. I think it was either him or DeJong and McClaren appears to rate him highly.

  • 69 Jail for Ashley // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:49 AM

And therefore lies the crux of the problem!

  • 70 expatmag // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:52 AM

You lot who think we will sign Abdennour need a reality check.

We have more chance of signing Abracadabra than him.

  • 71 Mister Tuff // Aug 20, 2015 at 12:55 AM

Once you start spending big amounts of money – you have to be “in it” for the long haul – and spend further, otherwise if you are seriously lacking in some positions, resulting in poorish results – it could be argued that the money which has already spent on players has been wasted. Additionally you do not see the best of the players already purchased.
or put in another way spoiling the ship for the sake of a tuppence of tar.
Still got ten days of the window open.

  • 72 expatmag // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:00 AM

    I admire your optimism mate

So why did we extend Coloccini contract?

  • 73 Toon-Prodigy // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:03 AM

I’v got an irk about this cry for a CB. Yes, I know colo needs replacing but are people really wanting 2 untested CB’s to be starting for NUFC?

This is the unforgiven Premier League?

Players need to be bedded. I can totally see why Colo has been kept on for the next yr or two. Alot of money riding on this season with TV money. To go into the season with 2 untested foreign inexperienced CB’s is a massive gamble.

    1 at a time.

  • 74 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:03 AM

    Bad attitude eh?

  • 75 expatmag // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:04 AM

Spot on about Perez. His actual position is the 10 and even him and De Jong would have difficulty getting selected in the first 11 in a 4231 format and certainly no chance in a 433 format. Cabella was well down the list.

  • 76 expatmag // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:07 AM

They dont become available every day of the week mate.

Mind you, I think people are in cloud cuckoo land if they believe these rumours.

  • 77 Mister Tuff // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:17 AM

Expat – the Colo situation is strange and could wreck the whole transition – I posted about this the other day. They’ll not be inclined to drop him if he has a crap season -seems to go against Wallys test to see all the players in action – clearly did not apply to Colo – were other forces at play. I think we’ll soon find out which way the wind blows.
If Colo flops again on Saturday and he’s responsible for some soft goals – fans will start complaining. Especially when we’ve needed a decent CB (Tall) for at least 3 years.
At that I’m away to the pit.

  • 78 Toon-Prodigy // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:23 AM

You don’t just sign two CB’s and wish for the best and hope they gel. Not at this level.

Colo has been here 7-8 yrs. He is key to settling Mbemba and the next CB in. It’s the same with Chelsea in trying to get John Stones from Everton. They see him as an eventual replacement for John Terry, he will be bedded and groomed, he won’t start. Bedding 2 new CB’s at the same time could lead to disaster.

Bring in the full back and no sales and we are done.

  • 79 expatmag // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:35 AM

    Fair point.

We have actually signed 2 centre backs. People maybe forgetting Lascelles.

I would be very surprised if we signed anyone else, let alone a quality centre back like Abdennour anyway. Certainly not unless there are some substantial exits.

  • 82 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:40 AM

Colo aka scapegoat for all goals conceded by fans gets a rough ride, yes he’s past his best but are people seriously telling me that he’s to blame for every single goal. If I didn’t watch games and just read this blog then I’d be inclined to think he was the root of all problems.

I don’t think Colo is good enough for the prem now at this age but this Colo bashing is going a bit far, the goal problems start from our 2 sitting midfielders who don’t protect the back 4 and don’t provide the forwards with any support. In all reality they are redundant on the pitch, they do fcuk all apart from pass it side to side, Anita in incredibly shit and Colback is just shit.

Colo wasn’t marking Shelvey nor was he keeping Gomis onside for the 1st goal, Colo wasn’t marking Ayew he was allowed to run unchallenged and unmarked by Anita and Colback. Colo wasn’t marking Soares who was allowed to cross for Pelle to score and Colo wasn’t marking Shane Long. Colo didn’t get sent off leaving his team to play 10 men for 50 odd minutes.

  • 83 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 1:51 AM

    Expat And TP

I find it amazing that people are actually falling for this rumour about Abdennour. I’d be very surprised if we bought a CB in to replace Colo and this is why:

    1) Highest wage earner at the club, why would you offer him a new deal without a pay cut to then sit him on the bench? Abramhovic yes he’d do that but Ashley would never allow that.

    2) Named as captain under new regime so hardly going to drop the captain are they.

    3) Aymen Abdennour is going to cost around 25m, he will have zero resale value. All the players we’ve bought will have time to recoup more funds for the club as they aren’t the finished product or come cheaper than expected. This Monaco lad isn’t, he comes at the peak of his price!!

    Come back to reality people

  • 84 Chinzaknuk // Aug 20, 2015 at 2:06 AM

We’ve spent £50 million and some people still seem to be disappointed. I just dont get it myself. If you already have a good team and then spend £50 million on one player then you’d expect it to be an obvious decision about a weak position. Also if youre spending £50 million on one player youre also probably a strong team that top players want to join.
We however are a pretty weak team of recent times, for various reasons and need build up a decent squad. We have been in decline for so long and we are so far behind many teams that we need to give S Mc time and support. 5 or 6 or 7 new players are never going to be a team challenging for much from day 1, but the quality coming in has to be applauded. Yes there are still gaps that need filling in defence but if the right players with the right attitude or outlook dont want to come to a struggling team then lets stick with what we have until we can show some improvement and attract the right ones rather than just buying someone different who turns out to be as bad as what we have already.

  • 85 Novocastrian66 // Aug 20, 2015 at 2:20 AM

Expat; Still a bit disappointed to see Cabella leave as I think he may have made the grade, however moving him on is probably the right decision for all parties.

  • 86 sks_toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 4:44 AM

    @ Chinzaknuk

Fair points, I am pretty sure though that most people here if they had the choice would have rather gotten another CB instead of Thuvin if it was a choice between the 2. Mbemba is a replacement for MYM but we already had a need for another quality CB when he was here anyways and we have needed to get a decent Tall CB for about 3 seasons, the need is still there so people have a right to be worried, especially with how our defense has been, we are 1 injury away from being exactly where we were defensively last season and that is concerning to all of us. Its great that we spent 50 million, we have underspent the last few seasons so it is nice to be finally spending serious money but it is the allocation of the money spent that has people concerned and it is legitimate.

  • 87 sks_toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 4:50 AM

Also I want to note that I am excited about Thuvin, but we still need a CB because not 1 of Colo, STaylor, (depending how long he can stay healthy) Lascelles (needs some time, hasnt shown much so far but its early he is one for the future) or Willo should be starting for NUFC if we want to not be in a relegation fight this year. As backups they are good, I hope we get another CB and sell Willo once and for all.

  • 88 ITUNDERASHELL // Aug 20, 2015 at 5:06 AM

Thauvin wore the number 20 shirt for france under 20s when they won the world cup in 2013. Abdennour resale value? Think how much Mbember will be worth if his CB partner can bring him up to world class standard, that goes for the rest of the squad if the defence gels.

reality. Its interesting that you seem to notice this trait in people you disagree with but not with people you do agree with.

  • 95 jimmysmith // Aug 20, 2015 at 6:59 AM

I still think signings are on the cards. Perhaps a CB, fullback, and CF, if the right deals are there to be made. They would take the Tunisian at the right price so long as they can shift Willo and ideally Taylor,
I think, for instance. They’d probably bring in a fullback, if they can shift one or two or more out of Gouffran, Abeid, Vuckic, and Obertan. Austin still might come in if we can shift Cisse.

Chinzaknuk- I broadly agree. I have repeatedly said that it will take a number of windows to establish the nucleus of a squad many on here are seeking. Toon- Prodigy is right in terms of bedding in players and learning from the experience of the seniors- Terry at Chelsea being apposite.

Lilongwe- I have heard nothing on injury front. Plenty of rumours linking him with AC Milan and implied suggestion in media that we want more than £16 million currently being offered.

I mean bodies out, bodies in if the transfer fees make sense for the club and the timing is right. This is often why deals don’t get done, I imagine, timing and money differences. The club likely won’t turn a good deal down though, and clearly we do still need a fullback and centre back. I agree though, more likely no than yes, but still on the cards.

Plenty of time for a Dunk type of defender but Abdennour ahahaha give your heads a shake man will ya. We have a owner who doesn’t like to spend what he can’t recoup, 25m on 1 player when trying to signing a player above 10m is like pulling teeth. We now believe he’s going to miraculously spend 25m on 1 CB on the back of giving the highest earner at the club a new 2 year deal, makes perfect that!!

Another day another repetitive slating of Jack Colback. Why do you feel the need to do this at least once a day? Everyone who reads the blog now understands that you think he is ‘utter sh**’. and to blame for all the worlds ills. Etc etc. I don’t agree. He aint a world beater, he’s solid and in fact retains the ball and he does start off counter attacking moves. Yes there are netter midfielders out there, if course. He has made mistakes, as would anyone, and you can show this if you stop, rewind and super slow mo anyone’s work in this team.
I don’t rate Anita that highly, but I find it surprising that nobody on the blog has stuck their hand up after your virtiolic posts about him too… After the West Ham game last season he was hailed as the second coming by many on the blog?

  • 108 Ian Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:26 AM

I see a gradual progression as being the way to go allowing acquisitions to bed in around the existing squad. At the same time moving on those that are merely delaying the progression of others. Macca did say that he wanted to fully assess the squad – time is pressing in this window.

  • 110 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:32 AM

Building over time is fine, but issues need to be addressed, and the signing of a defender who can lead and organise the defence is crucial. It will take far longer to coach improvement into the back line, and given the way our heads dropped last season during a bad run – and again against Swansea – can we afford not to bring a player of this ilk in? This and some character in the midfield. None of our players look capable of tearing a strip out of there teammates and getting a rise out of them in a positive way on the pitch. We need both these things, and have done for a long time.

We have 4 very tough games, and 2 that are probably standard Prem games coming up in our next 6. Heads could easily drop and we haven’t brought in any characters that give me confidence that they can pull the others out.

A Prem experienced centre half, and a character for the centre of midfield. I’d have preferred one of these to a Thauvin – Cabella exchange. Not that I am writing off Thauvin, he has to prove himself, but I will give him every opportunity.

Not sure if I’d start him at the weekend, but I’d definitely be thinking about it in a front three. Thauvin, Aarons, Perez – 2 of those 3 either side of Mitrovic and make Man U work defensively.

  • 111 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:34 AM

Before someone says, well we’ve spent 50m this summer or that he’s changed his policy this summer, it’s on change if tits done consistently can not once every 8 windows to rectify the errors of previous neglect.

Thauvin came in because it made economic sense, we got some of the transfer fee reduced because Cabella went out on loan, as much as 3m if you believe some sources but minimum 2m off his price. Cabella also has a fixed price of 5.8m attached to him and we’ve avoided paying his 5m add on based a appearances for the toon.

Add to that the money recouped in January for players and manager which are around 12m or 13m. Santon, Pardew and Yanga, add Abeid into that now 13.5m / 14.5m. If sissoko goes then we almost breakeven, last window we spent 37m more or less 20m came from the sale of Cabaye and the only signings for a year were 2 loanees.

I know you love all things colback mate, if he stops making critical errors I’ll have nothing to point out will I? Simple really isn’t it, it wasn’t Anita who got turned so easily by Shelvey & then let him pick out a pass, hence why JC got the wrath. After all I’ve put, things like Janmaat being a coward amongst many other things regarding other players, the one you take most offence to is Colback. Why is that?

As for Anita I think Colback is a better option for that role and Anita should be surplus to requirements or just cover.

  • 113 Ian Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:43 AM

I am really trying to moderate my own expectations of the window following countless disappointments. I was not a fan of Cabella because he simply didn’t remotely understand what it takes to perform in the PL. You coach- as a kid I was taught not to dwell on the ball and slow momentum.
It’s not rocket science we need defenders. We are carrying baggage in this area and many would say take a hit financially to free up spaces in the squad for fresh acquisition. The self sufficiency argument I always thought hit the buffers during our Europa League season. Pardew discovered that many of the younger breed were just not going to make it.

You are absolutely right on our Holding CMs. They are not thr solid its like they aint all they do is passing the ball. we need them to win tackles & Stop balls coming thru.

On Abdennour with the way he is good we can recap that money in a season or two either from Liverpool or Spurs and may b a European club. if it’s €25m which is £17.5m. We can sell him for more.

If he keeps up his good form remains fit. with media coverage we have in e EPL and Mcca gets the team to top 8. His resale value will rise. but if we also keep him for the next 6 yrs is not bad he will b 32 yrs then add also aint bad. I wld like y o hope we r building a team not being Southampton.

  • 115 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:46 AM

So it’s 17m pounds for abdennour, Monaco have rejected an offer this summer for the player of 20m euros with 5m add ons and apparently want 25m euros with an additional 3m euro add on.

Let’s say it ends up becoming that, 28m euros including add ons, 2m or 3m pounds minimum to his agent? 3m minimum to him for a signing on fee? What the price of him now?

  • 116 BandB // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:46 AM

I thought we’d sign four first-teamers and two understudies this window and that was before Mike opened his trap. We have spent about £10 million more that I though we would, and after blowing a good chunk on flops last summer, lets hope the extra spending has bought better quality.

We needed to get in some extra goals and some creativity up front as we just can’t hold the ball up there. Therefore I hope we push the boat out further and sign Rolan.

Nevertheless, Lil is absolutely right. We need a general in midfield and someone at CB who can organise the defence and stop a cross being the equivalent of a penalty. Otherwise, easy goals will be leaked and heads will drop. It is still a feature of our game and the one most likely to prevent us turning a real corner.

After so much cheap skating over so many years, I’m pleased Mike is in the mood to spend some of the dose that is swilling about.
I don’t see why any fan should be saying: “That’s enough now Mike. Put your purse away!”

PS. Geordies are hospitable folks, so I hope Thauvin is welcomed. Cup of tea Florian?

The back 4 need protection and the diminutive fellas tasked with that job aren’t good at, and with abdennour I just can’t see it happening….iff Colo hadn’t of signed a new contract then I’d say yes it can happen, but when the highest earner at the club signs a new deal it’s hardly going to be offered and signed for a place confined to the bench.

  • 119 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:52 AM

I’m not a huge fan of Cabella, I was one of the few on here sceptical of his signing last summer. I’m equally sceptical about Thauvin, I hope he proves me wrong.

Let Willo/Saylor leave on a free allowing for a squad space for a new centre half. If nobody comes in for either, pay up the contract, release one. An organiser in the back line will make all the individual components look better, and make them work better as a unit. It will also help our holding midfielders.

I do agree with TP though, that it needs to be a Prem experienced defender. Two brand new centre halves to the Prem is a risk as we wait for them to both adjust.

As for the kids, Sterry and Satka should be sent out on loan. They won’t get better sitting in the reserves and they won’t adjust to the more physically robust nature of non age group football.

Funny you should mention that (Janmaat) – it was a ridiculous sending off but I thought your assertion ( that he did that all on purpose, and to say that he is a coward who was looking to miss the Man U game too) was ridiculous at the very least. Yes nobody could disagree he isn’t playing well, and yes he was getting roasted. But you’ve assumed you know all the circumstances and have access to the inside of Janmaat’s head into the bargain. Applying your logic – you think he looked at the next game (Arsenal at home) and fancied that more?

  • 121 will die for the toon army // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:55 AM

Southampton has lost all its team and squad both for Pothechino and Koleman. Its becoming to worse than I thought. I thought MA wld sell of his players. Southampton is selling every one wen the price is good it has become an academy for the Top 4.

I wish we jst get e b@!!s to resist and build a squad and Team to compete. If we sign Abdennour & Rolan and not lose any of our better players Colo, Krul, Sissoko, Janmatt, Colback, Tiote, Cisse,
It will b a good start.

Macca is doing good job, but he needs to be given a time to work. We brought 4 new first-teamers already and one for development squad. It is clear we are building for the future, I think we will see the best of our team coming in the thime of Christmas, when everybody will be settled here and everybody will know how he wants to play. They clearly bring players that suited to this style, he like to play either 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3….We now have solid team, much improved on last year, but we need another CB with good heading ability and RB cover…I personally would give Haidara time until next window to see if he is good enough for EPL, if not, then we have to go for J. Willems, perfect LB, great left foot, great football brain and rocket speed. CB my first choices were Abdennour/Rudiger, the second one went to Roma, so we need to bring Aymen. But now it seem M. Sakho is availible from Liverpool, maybee if we cant sign Abdennour, should turn to Sakho. And bring that right back Byram from Leeds, to give Janmaat some competition. But team looks solid now, and Macca talked about three windows, so next year I think we are going to be top 6 contenders. I like it that we have some very good talents coming through our youth system Armstrong, Woodman, Roberts all north-east lads and Kemen, Toney as well great. Future for Newcastle looks good to me.
    AM:Wijnaldum,De Jong,Marveaux

so from this, it is clear we have to buy CB Abdennour/Sakho and RB cover player with potential Byram…Then what is clear for me, there has to be bring top holding midfielder in the future, as Anita and Colback are ok, but none of them is great, Tiote for me has to be sold, he is past it and clearly doesnt cut to Maccas system. LB position if Haidara isnt good enough then bring Willems in winter transfer window….

Agree with you 100% there mate…that’s why SM played Obertan against Soares when we played Southampton…his perceived threat (even though he’s sh!te) was enough to stop Coates bombing forward.

Thauvin is much more than a perceived threat and with someone like Aarons on the other flank we can certainly keep Man U on a leash if we play it right.

I’ve always been an advocate of playing very offensively against the bigger clubs away from home because we literally have nowt to lose and much can be gained confidence wise from a good performance away at the bigger clubs by scoring a couple of goals even if we lose.

They can’t score if we’ve got the ball and we’ll make it harder for them play with real threats and speed out on the flanks.

For me its either Anita OR Colback, not together – they don’t compliment each other. Colback looked a different player with the likes of Cabaye. Even with the now departed Abeid it looked promising.
All positions could be improved right now in a perfect world. Its a process. Back the lads!

    Sing in the corner

Have to respond before I go, Janmaat got a roasting we all know that but he’s had previous with a cheap sending off hasn’t he. Leicester last season which was well masked by the claim of willo deliberately getting himself sent off by Carver.

As for the sending off last week, Janmaat knows fine well as does every other footballer that pulling someone back deliberately is an automatic yellow, did Janmaat complain about his 2nd yellow? Did any nufc player complain about it? Did Janmaat even wait for the ref to brandish the cards? No he didn’t. Heat of the moment anything can happen but Janmaat knew that he’d automatically get a sent off for what he did. He was broke down mentally in 40 mins of football.

I don’t know what went on in his head or what he was thinking, I do know all the refs go to every team and sit them down before the season starts and tells them what am automatic booking is for and automatic reds are for. He didn’t just lash out by losing his temper he was dispossessed by the very winger who’d gone past him time and time again. Cowards option is what he took just like he did at Leicester, you beg to differ good for you….its we all had the same opinions it would be a boring place

With giving Colo a contract we got stability and leadership in the dressing room. Am not Mcca but confidence for the other players that we can keep players beyond 30 yrs old once u r playing well.

    Above 30 – Colo (33), Taylor (30)
    Below 30 – Abdennour (26), Mbemba (20), Lascelles (21)

I can trust any of those defenders on pitch and if I was Mcca I wld send Lasceles on loan with a 24 hr return clause. To build him up. I think Taylor wont get a new contract. To build Lasceles up.

If Abdennour and Mbemba stay Good as they were. Then we have a solid partnership for next 6 yrs or more.
