Report Newcastle Close To Signing Aymen Abdennour

8:57 am, Thursday, August 20th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 41 Comments

Most fans want to see a top center-back brought into the club before September 1st, and one of the players we have been continually linked with this summer is Aymen Abdennour of Monaco, who had a great first season at Monaco and has been tracked by a number of top clubs this summer.

Aymen-Abdennour-Monaco-v-Arsenal

Aymen Abdennour – Newcastle close to deal?

On Monday there was what seemed to be a very accurate report in La Provence that said Newcastle would tie up long term target Florian Thauvin for around £12M and that Remy Cabella would be sent on loan for the season to Marseille – and that turned out to be a very accurate report.

La Provence in  the same report then said that once the Thauvin deal was completed, Newcastle would then go all out to try to sign Tunisian International center-back Aymen Abdennour.

So maybe, just maybe that part of the report is also true?

Some big clubs have been linked with Abdennour this summer, but the good news is that he indicated earlier this summer he would like to join Newcastle.

All summer his agent Abdelkader Jilani has tried to drum up some interest in his client, and has pointed out more than once that a number of top clubs are interested in signing the 26 year-old Tunisian.

And then last night this was tweeted by a reporter who principally reports on Russian football, but is knowledgeable on French Football.

So there are two pieces of information this week that link Newcastle with not only being interested in signing Aymen Abdennour, but that we are close to a deal.

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking (always possible), but this lad would be a great signing for us, and the Newcastle team would look a lot more balanced with another top center-back at Newcastle.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I was hoping for more news on this today and hopeful that news outlets would report it from more than 1 source.

  • 2 TheToonKing // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:05 AM

I can’t see this happen to be honest, he’s being tracked by teams like Barcelona, we already spent a lot of money, Colo extension etc.

But god damn, i’d give a right leg for this guy, such a beast. Besides skill he would add a lot of fight to the team, no pansy performances and not turning up with him around.

  • 3 Jib // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:06 AM

Vadim Vasilyev is the CEO of Monaco and the owner is a Russian billionaire so anyone with Russian connections probably has the inside track

    Hymen Abdomen…… IN!

  • 5 firebug666 // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:07 AM

One can only hope that the information is correct and a deal is close.

We have brought in some very good players to go with those we have, now all we need is some heart and soul from them and pride in the shirt.

Sadly that was missing last time out.

    Our Toon,
SDJ could be the person to do it, but I’m not convinced. Anita is not going to put in big tackles, but he has the intelligence to drop in when required, and reads play well. Colback is similar, so it would be one of the two for me. Not both. We haven’t got anyone else who can fill that role at the minute, but it is probably a toss of a coin between them at the moment.

Defender essential but I would prefer one that knows the league. Have a feeling manure are going to wake up against us next week and I’m expecting our first thrashing of the season.

  • 8 Novocastrian66 // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:08 AM

The chronicle has reported that the Thauvin deal would be the last major signing.

  • 9 hibbit // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:08 AM

please excuse my ignorance is he that good is he the man we need …..i truly hope so

  • 10 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:09 AM

Incidentally, according to reporters on bbc radio Newcastle, our new signing is pronounced……

    Floriahng Toe Van

    (SIGH)

  • 11 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:10 AM

    LG and Our toon

I think Anita is fine in the middle, but needs to be backed up by a stronger DMF. Which we don’t have.

  • 12 Mr Funk // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:12 AM

Can i also point out that the reporter was also certain that NUFC was going to sign Rondon. Therefore it is unlikely that we will sign Abdennour

  • 13 will die for the toon army // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:13 AM

He is being tracked but nothing is moving. Tracking and bidding are two different things.

    Lillongwe
Sissoko has a technic of basting thru players with his pace which attracks Perez and any first winger he plays around. it really worked well with Perez they wld break so fast.

  • 14 Toonfan8 // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:13 AM

Abdennour would be cracking signing, just what we need. My only worry with him is his injury record last season. But definetely would improve our back four…him pairing with Mbemba seems ideal

  • 15 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:13 AM

    Hibbit

He’s a class act, I hope he comes in, can’t see it though unless we offloaded Sissoko. From the high life of tax haven Monaco to the bigg market howay lad

  • 16 kakaobi // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:15 AM

Give ower man it’s all a smoke screen for the Austin bid £14m

  • 17 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:17 AM

    YCMIU & LG

Think we all agree a big presence is lacking in midfield, can either of you see young Kemen filling this role, if not this season then next season?

  • 18 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:18 AM

Tell you who I would play as our DMF….
    Jonas…..oh, hang on….never mind 😀

  • 19 lesh // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:18 AM

    Kakaobi

    Austin bid? Austin who?

Has Ed ran any threads on the link?

    😉

  • 20 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:19 AM

    Will Die,
Sissoko can use his pace to get past people, but centrally he doesn’t have the ability to pass the ball well or to create so it is wasted. By all means, allow him to go past people out wide and cross the ball in, but threading a clever pass? He is poor at basic passing, let alone passing with intelligence.

I wonder whether we could get Monaco to take Rivi back at the same time…..

  • 21 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:19 AM

    Our Toon

I really dont know a lot about Kemen. He has a good rep, but to be honest i have not seen any footage of him play, and i dont know what his position in the MF is.

  • 22 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:21 AM

    Our Toon,
No. Not in the near future. I haven’t seen enough to know if he is the presence and personality we need, but he isn’t a defensive midfielder.

  • 23 lesh // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:21 AM

    Out toon

It’s not much of a change for him if he joins us.

Sunderland’d be closer to Monaco’s system – there’s very few pay tax there either!

  • 24 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:24 AM

    YCMIU

He’s a strong lad, tough tackler but can also play the box to box role. His 1st touch can be a concern at times but he’s still developing.

  • 25 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:26 AM

    LG

Was thinking more for the box to box role alongside Wijnaldum or with Wijnaldum kept further forward in his current position and then we could look at a DM

  • 26 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:27 AM

    Our toon

Well, i suppose it’s worth trying him out in there. Even if, as LG says, it’s not his position, we don’t know how he will develop. Many players end up settling in to a different role to the one they began playing with.

  • 27 hibbit // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:27 AM

ycmiu…. very good young player looks the part big and strong got a very good engine always looking to be part of the game needs game time at a higher level another player that should be out on loan

  • 28 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:28 AM

    Lesh

Ahahaha, can’t say I disagree with you there buddy.

  • 29 Jib // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:28 AM

Jan Vertonghen is Barcelona’s main target but Spurs are playing hardball. If the Catalans cannot get the Belgian then Abdennour is their second choice.
If Spurs keep JV and Abdennour goes to Barca it may be worth our while looking at another Spurs CB who West Brom are chasing namely Federico Fazio the 6’5″ Argentinian

  • 30 Oldgit1 // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:30 AM

I believe that Mbamba could revert to a CDM I’m sure he has played as one in Holland so a CB is not a pipe dream, I think we will still get one in.

  • 31 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:33 AM

    Jib

Replace 1 argentine with another. All joking aside though what’s our HG quota looking like? Do we have enough space in the squad to make up 25

  • 32 SanD // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:34 AM

Why buy a CB to play CDM. That’s been the problem here for years. Players not playing in their strongest position.

  • 33 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:34 AM

    Colo as DM?

  • 34 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:37 AM

    Oldgit,
I’m not sure whether Mbemba played defensive midfield in Belgium, but that is the position he mainly occupies when playing at international level.

    Our Toon,
No to Colo in defensive midfield, yes he has played there in the past, but when he was much younger and in a far slower paced league. He doesn’t have the legs to play that role in the Prem nowadays.

  • 35 Jib // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:38 AM

Colo played DM until he went to Italy

  • 36 Our Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:40 AM

    LG

Was thinking more of sit in front of the back 4 rather than chase the ball and cover for full backs.

  • 37 Sazzer // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:40 AM

@FNN_Official is an enjoyable account but they don’t know anything just jumps on different stories and thus gets a lot more things wrong than right.

  • 38 RolandoOverhead // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:43 AM

Signing Abdennour would be like the Gini Signing x 20. It’s a fantasy football level signing and one that would actually shock me if it happend. Talk of him wanting to join us sounds false, but the same thing was claimed in the past. So who knows, but if it is true and it comes off, wow … just wow,and a huge line of people waiting to expose their collective asses in Fenwick’s window.

  • 39 andrewsneill // Aug 20, 2015 at 9:57 AM

He’d be absoloutely brilliant and, alongside Mbemba, create a centre back pairing that should last for years. Still worry about the right back position though as, beyond Janmaat who is of course suspended for the weekend, we have no-one who specialises in playing there. Sam Byram from leeds should be a reasonably cheap and successful solution to this problem though.

Looking like a great transfer window if we can get those two and keep Sissoko. Long way to go yet though…

  • 40 Ian Toon // Aug 20, 2015 at 10:40 AM

Jib-” Don’t take this the wrong way” or with all due respect. There are idiots on here on so many levels but I was beginning to think you weren’t one of them. Your plastic fan type comment addressed at Belfast the other evening was out of order. Just my opinion on what was an unexpected item in the bagging area comment.

  • 41 jlarsen // Aug 20, 2015 at 7:38 PM

I have never read so many weird opinions in the comment section. Someone also said Anita was a fine player? wtf… We need Abdennour, a good left back, and a backup for Janmaat on RB. So at least three more players to get a top half finish. A strong central midfielder could push us even further, but I don’t think Newcastle will buy more than 1 more player. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. No coach in the world could be successful with our current crop of players.
