Report Newcastle Close To Signing Aymen Abdennour

Most fans want to see a top center-back brought into the club before September 1st, and one of the players we have been continually linked with this summer is Aymen Abdennour of Monaco, who had a great first season at Monaco and has been tracked by a number of top clubs this summer.

Aymen-Abdennour-Monaco-v-Arsenal

Aymen Abdennour – Newcastle close to deal?

On Monday there was what seemed to be a very accurate report in La Provence that said Newcastle would tie up long term target Florian Thauvin for around £12M and that Remy Cabella would be sent on loan for the season to Marseille – and that turned out to be a very accurate report.

La Provence in  the same report then said that once the Thauvin deal was completed, Newcastle would then go all out to try to sign Tunisian International center-back Aymen Abdennour.

So maybe, just maybe that part of the report is also true?

Some big clubs have been linked with Abdennour this summer, but the good news is that he indicated earlier this summer he would like to join Newcastle.

All summer his agent Abdelkader Jilani has tried to drum up some interest in his client, and has pointed out more than once that a number of top clubs are interested in signing the 26 year-old Tunisian.

And then last night this was tweeted by a reporter who principally reports on Russian football, but is knowledgeable on French Football.

So there are two pieces of information this week that link Newcastle with not only being interested in signing Aymen Abdennour, but that we are close to a deal.

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking (always possible), but this lad would be a great signing for us, and the Newcastle team would look a lot more balanced with another top center-back at Newcastle.

What do you think?

I was hoping for more news on this today and hopeful that news outlets would report it from more than 1 source.

I can’t see this happen to be honest, he’s being tracked by teams like Barcelona, we already spent a lot of money, Colo extension etc.

But god damn, i’d give a right leg for this guy, such a beast. Besides skill he would add a lot of fight to the team, no pansy performances and not turning up with him around.

Vadim Vasilyev is the CEO of Monaco and the owner is a Russian billionaire so anyone with Russian connections probably has the inside track

One can only hope that the information is correct and a deal is close.

We have brought in some very good players to go with those we have, now all we need is some heart and soul from them and pride in the shirt.

Sadly that was missing last time out.

    Our Toon,
SDJ could be the person to do it, but I’m not convinced. Anita is not going to put in big tackles, but he has the intelligence to drop in when required, and reads play well. Colback is similar, so it would be one of the two for me. Not both. We haven’t got anyone else who can fill that role at the minute, but it is probably a toss of a coin between them at the moment.

Defender essential but I would prefer one that knows the league. Have a feeling manure are going to wake up against us next week and I’m expecting our first thrashing of the season.

I think Anita is fine in the middle, but needs to be backed up by a stronger DMF. Which we don’t have.

Can i also point out that the reporter was also certain that NUFC was going to sign Rondon. Therefore it is unlikely that we will sign Abdennour

He is being tracked but nothing is moving. Tracking and bidding are two different things.

    Lillongwe
Sissoko has a technic of basting thru players with his pace which attracks Perez and any first winger he plays around. it really worked well with Perez they wld break so fast.

Abdennour would be cracking signing, just what we need. My only worry with him is his injury record last season. But definetely would improve our back four…him pairing with Mbemba seems ideal

Think we all agree a big presence is lacking in midfield, can either of you see young Kemen filling this role, if not this season then next season?

    Will Die,
Sissoko can use his pace to get past people, but centrally he doesn’t have the ability to pass the ball well or to create so it is wasted. By all means, allow him to go past people out wide and cross the ball in, but threading a clever pass? He is poor at basic passing, let alone passing with intelligence.

I wonder whether we could get Monaco to take Rivi back at the same time…..

No. Not in the near future. I haven’t seen enough to know if he is the presence and personality we need, but he isn’t a defensive midfielder.

Sunderland’d be closer to Monaco’s system – there’s very few pay tax there either!

He’s a strong lad, tough tackler but can also play the box to box role. His 1st touch can be a concern at times but he’s still developing.

Was thinking more for the box to box role alongside Wijnaldum or with Wijnaldum kept further forward in his current position and then we could look at a DM

Well, i suppose it’s worth trying him out in there. Even if, as LG says, it’s not his position, we don’t know how he will develop. Many players end up settling in to a different role to the one they began playing with.

Jan Vertonghen is Barcelona’s main target but Spurs are playing hardball. If the Catalans cannot get the Belgian then Abdennour is their second choice.
If Spurs keep JV and Abdennour goes to Barca it may be worth our while looking at another Spurs CB who West Brom are chasing namely Federico Fazio the 6’5″ Argentinian

I believe that Mbamba could revert to a CDM I’m sure he has played as one in Holland so a CB is not a pipe dream, I think we will still get one in.

    Oldgit,
I’m not sure whether Mbemba played defensive midfield in Belgium, but that is the position he mainly occupies when playing at international level.

    Our Toon,
No to Colo in defensive midfield, yes he has played there in the past, but when he was much younger and in a far slower paced league. He doesn’t have the legs to play that role in the Prem nowadays.

Signing Abdennour would be like the Gini Signing x 20. It’s a fantasy football level signing and one that would actually shock me if it happend. Talk of him wanting to join us sounds false, but the same thing was claimed in the past. So who knows, but if it is true and it comes off, wow … just wow,and a huge line of people waiting to expose their collective asses in Fenwick’s window.

He’d be absoloutely brilliant and, alongside Mbemba, create a centre back pairing that should last for years. Still worry about the right back position though as, beyond Janmaat who is of course suspended for the weekend, we have no-one who specialises in playing there. Sam Byram from leeds should be a reasonably cheap and successful solution to this problem though.

Looking like a great transfer window if we can get those two and keep Sissoko. Long way to go yet though…

Your plastic fan type comment addressed at Belfast the other evening was out of order. Just my opinion on what was an unexpected item in the bagging area comment.
