Mitrovic, Perez Both Start At Old Trafford

Steve McClaren has just announced the Newcastle team to play Manchester United at Old Trafford today – a game that has a 12:45 pm early kick-off – and the game has come a bit early for Moussa Sissoko who misses out.

But both Mitrovic and Perez start this game with Papiss Cisse dropping down to the bench.

Teams:

Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Sergio Romero; Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw; Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin; Adnan Januzaj, Juan Mata, Memphis Depay; Wayne Rooney (c)
Substitutes: Sam Johnstone, Paddy McNair, Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Chancel Mbemba, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Massadio Haidara; Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback; Ayoze Perez, Georginio Wijnaldum, Gabriel Obertan; Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Mike Williamson, Cheick Tiote, Siem de Jong, Rolando Aarons, Florian Thauvin, Papiss Cisse

New signing Florian Thauvin is one the bench and it’s good to see both Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez start this game for Newcastle – and Siem de Jong is back on the bench after missing last week’s game at Swansea.

Chancel Mbemba moves to right back and Steven Taylor comes into the middle – as expected – with Daryl Janmaat missing this game through suspension.

The two wingers will be Gabby Obertan and Ayoze Perez with Mitrovic up front – what a game to make your starting debut in for the Serbian International – let’s hope he doesn’t go daft and pick up a yellow card again.

This is what head coach Steve McClaren has said about this game:

“It’s fantastic, many people would think it’s not a good fixture for us with our new look squad but it’s going to be a good chance for us really up our performance,”

“We took a step back last week after a promising start against Southampton but now it’s about moving forward in terms of our performance, attitude and the football we play.”

“Hopefully then we can become a side that teams will start to dread playing.”

“They’ve won every game,” “I don’t think there’s a team in the Premier League at the moment, bar maybe Manchester City, who will be more satisfied with the way they’ve started and the football they are playing.”

“There is a lot of talk of them not doing this or not doing that and I know from my days there that there always will be that pressure and expectation to play free-flowing, attacking football.”

“However, the important thing for them is that they are winning efficiently and winning well, which they’ve shown over the past few games.”

“The players we’ve brought in are winners and they will be wanting to start winning games as soon as possible, starting at Old Trafford.”

It’s a tough game today but an interesting choice of team from Steve McClaren.

Three fans in five think we will lose this game.

Man Utd: Romero; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger; Mata, Januzaj, Memphis; Rooney.

subs: Johnstone, McNair, Valencia, Carrick, Herrera, Young, Chicharito.

Obertan still in the starring line up, ahead of arrons & Thauvin. This guy seems undroppable

Cmon Newcastle. Great to see Mitrovic starting.

Obertan’s got to stand up for this one. Concerned about his nervy character, in front of Old Trafford crowd. We can’t afford for him to hide in this game.

Pleased to see mitrovic and perez starting, just hoping know that it works….I am pretty positive we can get a result here……but won’t be disappointed unless it’s a proper thumping

Jesus, Obertan again, no doubt Aarons will get a run out when we are 3-0 down, Thauvin might come on at 4-0.

    Yep Thauvin on bench

    2. obertan is the new gouf- undroppable.

Our midfield is going to get dominated

  • 20 Noel Worst // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:53 AM

Mitrovic definitely has the capability to bully Blind and Smalling. A weak central pair.

Their front 4 looks fearsome though and my faith in our defence is at an all-time low.

  • 21 Brian Pinas // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:53 AM

Mitro to stand on Blind; should cause him all sorts of problems. Might seem mad but I fancy this.

  • 22 Mister Tuff // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:53 AM

Glad Mitrovich is starting – should see some sparks today.
How the hell Obertron gets a start I don’t know – useless footballer. I ‘m sure we’ll see some excellent defensive duties from him (Not).
hope it’s a fairy tale ending but I suspect not – I think we’ll get whooped.

  • 25 ronaldo aarons // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:53 AM

I think he will be playing Perez on the left, tough game v darmian who has looked very good for man utd. I wonder why he has yet to start aarons considering his link up play with haidara being quite good.

  • 26 northernracoon // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:54 AM

Really pleased with that… apart from obertan…id of started aarons… but think both aarons and thauvin will come in at some point….. can see perez more than filling sissoko’s boots….and mitro will be buzzing… i think this is the game to throw him in and settle the lad… both wide players rly need to get the service in up top for the big lad…. should cause manure a few problems !!

  • 27 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:55 AM

Obertan has not done bad deserves his place

  • 28 JDdubai // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:55 AM

Obertan the new Gouffran…..defensive choice ahead of Aarons or Thauvin.

Other than that I would have picked the same team, good to see Perez in there.

Cant see why we didnt go with Aarons stating with Thauvin the option to come on in 2nd half but lets see how it goes..

  • 29 Noel Worst // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:55 AM

Obertan is starting because he was one of our best players in the opener, provided a stunning assist and because he was our only player to show any attacking intent in the 1st half last weekend, again was one of our better players.

  • 30 Mister Tuff // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:56 AM

Mitrovich is going to in one direction – goal bound -confronting defenders really interesting to see how this pans out -would love him to score.
Keeping a close eye on Colo today to see if he repeats his errors.

  • 34 Slank // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:58 AM

Do you not think that playing Obertan against his old club a good physiological reason to do so ?

  • 35 catchy in norway // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:58 AM

obertan is only starting because he is in the shop window,

once this squad starts clicking WE all know he has nothing on Rolando Sissoko Lorian or perez come to that.

Amyone else thinking a mbemba and perez partnership down the right might be a bit of a surprise for man u ? Mbemba has more pace than janmaat and is very direct!

  • 44 Tinman // Aug 22, 2015 at 12:03 PM

Obertan not in the window. Been one of our better players so far. Expect Thauvin to take that position in the next week or two, same way Mitro has.

  • 45 Mister Tuff // Aug 22, 2015 at 12:03 PM

got to hope for defensive mistakes from the makeshift manc back 4

  • 51 mindshaft // Aug 22, 2015 at 12:07 PM

overran is playing because Aaron’s isn’t consistent enough and not ready to start 90 mins.
Thauvin will take Obertans place when he’s up to speed
Obertans not playing because he’s in shop window – if that were the case Cisse, Gouff, Willo would all be starting every game

worried about Haidara – he’s been poor in first couple of games and the Taylor/Collo CB pairing shows we still need a decent CB

  • 52 ronaldo aarons // Aug 22, 2015 at 12:08 PM

I am surprised at the selection of Perez. I don’t see how he fits into a 3 man midfield behind Mitrovic playing on the opposite side of Obertan.

Obertan will be bombing forward trying to use his pace and get a few crosses in, whilst Perez will be trying to keep the ball on the deck and link up play on the other side… it all seems very asymmetrical and disjointed to me…. who knows, maybe that could work by confusing the Man Utd back line.

    not really

williamson has nothing to offer, 6ft4 but can not head a ball,
obertan has pace, that can be a huge asset , he just has stop being so lazy and track back, a team will pay a few mill for that.

  • 83 SUTTY1978 // Aug 22, 2015 at 12:41 PM

Perez doesnt offer too much on the wong. The idea of getting a big lad like mitro is to use wingers who can cross. Dont see that from Perez and certainly dont see that from Obertan if he’s on the left. I predict an isolated and frustrated Mitro nutting Chris Smalling. Drop a tenner on it.

That Wijnaldum free-kick was in his vicinity and his marker, Rooney (should be a mismatch), was the one to clear it.

  • 141 toon kk // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:14 PM

There’s definitely goals in Mitrovic if he gets the right service, he can definitely head a ball.

  • 142 2_goal_tino // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:14 PM

The issue we are having is on the wings, not the defence. I don’t blame Obertan or Perez because it isn#t either of their natural games but they aren’t offering any protection to a CB playing at RB or a very attacking LB. To compensate our CBs are spreading out wide, which when they do is leaving gaps in the middle.

  • 143 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:14 PM

This is very bad. Completely dominated. We are so far away from even giving clubs like United a game. It’s like a stroll in the park for them.

Colo has turned up so far, too, which is nice of him.

  • 146 LGFUAD21 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:16 PM

    Davetoon.

Our defence has been letting Man U tear through them but saving themselves in the box.

It’s like they are playing a sick joke on themselves because they get off on the adrenaline.

I rate Colback a a player but Colback and anita together do not work.

Colback gives you pressing and work rate.
    Anita gives you composure.
No steel in the midfield at all.

I’ve said all pre season that a proper cdm is essential along with a tall cb.

We need to shore up the defence but also protect it. That would allow Gini, moussa and wingers free reign to attack.

For years our issue has been the lack of protection meaning our attacking players have to defend.

No surprise our best season in recent years involved Tiote in superb form.

I said. Despite what people think of the guy now, we need either him to step back up or something that can replace him. Every time he has gotten injured our team has gone to pieces.

    2 goal tino.

Obertan traditionally has offered event protection but he has stranded them in the 3 games so far.

    You are spot on.

Pardew has destroyed this club by convincing our wingers to be defenders.

Our deep lying mids also need to be pushing out wide to squeeze the space and contain the attacker.

  • 152 davetoon // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:19 PM

@LGFUAD21 if the MF cant hold the ball theres not a lot that the defence could do. If we held a high line with our current back 4 – we would get slaughtered. I actually think the defence is playing ok. a lot of important blocks have gone in. they just have to watch giving rooney or depay that little bit of space

  • 202 Noel Worst // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:37 PM

Encouraging half after the opening 15mins.

Obertan frustrating at times, a couple of momnets he’s been 1vs1 and not gone for it, he was almost past Shaw late on and put the brakes on for no reason. He’s best when direct and in full flight, engage brain and he glitches out.

Colback has had e few wobbles with his passing backwards.

On the whole, I’m feeling a lot better about the next 45 than I was at the beginning of the match. Defence has been fairly solid and organised, after the early stages.

Ayoze and Gini have been very comfortable, Taylor and Colo have been solid, Mbemba has grown after being a little overrun by Memphis, looks strong and capable.
Would like to see Aarons on the left but it would be unfair to take Ayoze off, maybe McC will bring Aarons on at left back like against Southampton.

Beside that it looks good I think! Obertan still gives us absolutely nothing!

  • 211 Ben-Arfa11 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:38 PM

Colo has been very impressive today interesting to see toonbrother hasn’t come on to say anything bad about him today ??? toonbrother is clearly a troll and probably a sunderland fan and just picks out on his errors but never mentions his technical ability which can be pretty outstanding I think he actually would make a good sweeper tbh probably better than a centre half…

gini and mitrovic have been outstanding today total class anita has been nice and tidy colback works tirelessly but has been poor today while obertan has been non existant and makes poor descions im guessing arrons must be peeved off about him be chosen over him that’s why he hasn’t written on his twitter account that much recently as before he was non stop on it ….

put thauvin on for obertan and arrons on for perez and we could win this.

Not today but I’d really be tempted to see how a front two of Perez and Mitrovic would work. It would be like going back to the little and large strikeforces of the 90s. Think their games could compliment one another pretty well.

  • 231 LGFUAD21 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:42 PM

We’ve certainly grown into the game.

I think part of it is a confidence issue.

We starting growing in it once Mitrovic had his chance.

I really rate anita but I think he would flourish next to a proper dm.

  • 232 IrishMagpie // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:42 PM

I’m happy enough with the first half, I think we could do with replacing Obertan but I’d imagine we won’t make any changes at half time.

  • 233 TheToonKing // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:42 PM

Oba off of Thauvin is the only change I’d do. We’re doing OK, but will need a spark from somewhere if we actully want to win this.

  • 234 Rotonda heights // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:42 PM

That was great wasn’t it. Ok we’re not quite getting the results yet but we are playing football again after 4 years.

The potential of wijni, mitro, perez, mbemba is there for all to see.

Little Anita keeps us ticking in midfield. Have to say i’ve rubbished him for years but saylor up to now is having a blinder. Colo too for that matter.

Obi is Obi, some good, some terrible just wish he’d really drive at the defence. Fingers crossed we can hold on or even dare to dream.. . . . !!!

  • 235 the broons // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:43 PM

    sing in the corner

Except if that was tiote first half the criticism would be of a even larger scale…

  • 236 Nufc-83 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:43 PM

We are lacking a player in cm capable of finding a pass more than 10yds. Cabaye or shelvey type of player who can switch the play with a driven long ball to the wingers feet. Instead we play in really tight spaces and get caught out.

  • 237 the ledge // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:44 PM

  • 238 Ben-Arfa11 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:44 PM

    REMY CABELLA=

    yohan CABaye

shame cabella didn’t play like these 3

  • 239 JackButler // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:44 PM

Get Thauvin on for Obertan after 70 mins.

  • 245 LGFUAD21 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:45 PM

I don’t think its a case of Colback being a poor player.

I think he is struggling to find an identity in the team.

Really don’t think him and anita are a good partnership.

Colo and saylor and Mbemba are good enough defenders. So long as the ball is along the ground.

Put a dm in and colo wouldn’t have to rush out from defence like he does opening us up.

Just dhope that the opposition doesn’t out any aerial balls in.

  • 246 worthing magpiee // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:45 PM

Good last 20 mins from the lads, perez and gini have been impressive, mitrovic has definitely got wat it takes in this league, give him time, the defence has looked pretty good aswell, but could of been 2 nil down in the first 25

yes it is but frustrating when mitro in the box and we take corners short!!
why cant we out swing the ball in and at least make the keeper work?

  • 248 Mister Tuff // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:45 PM

Obertron – frustrating at times NO NO NO – he’s a knacker all the time. As has been stated on here previously he’s a field athlete not a footballer.
    Perez playing very well.
Bring Thauvin on if not at half time very soon after.
    Bloody Obertron -useless absolutely useless.

  • 249 King_Solano // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:45 PM

Glad to be still even after the first 20mins.
Colback and Anita cannot continue to play together in the 2 holding positions. They’re not dominate enough. We need to address that in my opinion.
And as for Oberton, he should be nowhere near the starting 11.
Florian on now for oberton, 70 mins swap Anita for SDJ and push Gobi back to DM. Aaron’s for Perez at some point.

  • 250 Rotonda heights // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:45 PM

    LGFUAD21

I know what you mean, that’s why i was sad abeid was let go as I’m not sure tiote will ever be the force he once was which would allow anita to keep things moving as well as he does .

  • 251 Nufc-83 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:46 PM

Obertan off Aarons or thauvin in and move Perez to right side to offer protecion against shaw and depay. Mata on the right easier to deal with so get the more attacking player over on that side.

  • 252 Clarke_M // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:46 PM

we have to remember their rightback is on a yellow. we need thauvin or aarons on there instead of obertan.. we need speed down there with haidara overlapping. they are targeting our rightback as well, and mata doesnt have the speed to upset us there.. we need to focus on more balls in the box as blind is poor in the air and smalling looks clumsy.. i can see this ending 1-1

  • 253 switch365 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:46 PM

  • 254 coatesy17 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:46 PM

Colwell, I think you understimate Luke Shaws pace though… Obertan is fast but so is Luke Shaw… also Obertan seems to be really not putting much in today.

  • 255 one fine day // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:47 PM

    exactly NUFC-83

  • 257 Nufc-83 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:47 PM

Shaw has incredible speed so cant say obertan is not fast.

  • 258 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:47 PM

Thauvin might give us more penetration than obertan. Obertan looks scared to take players on. Even haidara try to go pass darmian by pushing the ball behind him and trying to run to it. Atleast he’s working to his strength.

Obertan is scared to use his pace. Thauvin might be the answer. He’s fast and direct and not afraid. A different alternative to cabella.

  • 263 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:48 PM

Anita has been so tidy, wijnaldum looks like he has a great turn of speed on him, Collo and Taylor look composed, need more players wanting the ball from the back to reduce the need to lump it long, MU are giving our boys time by regrouping, they’re going to let us play but we aren’t taking it up!

  • 264 JackButler // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:49 PM

  • 267 rwpoynter // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:49 PM

Having watched the first half on BT Sport, whatever happens in the second half and I am optimistic, this is a very different NUFC to the one last season. Steve seems to have given the new and old players belief in themselves. Obertan and Anita seem to have gained confidence which they rarely showed last season. We can win this one . Man U are not what they used to be. Good purchases have been made by us and now just give them their chance. So much in footballl is all about confidence.

  • 268 mindshaft // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:50 PM

imagine manure will come out blazing, Obertan needs to track back and double up on Memphis

  • 269 Noel Worst // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:50 PM

Why are folks so sensitive about their fave player being criticised?

It’s really irrational how some get attached to their opinions and see somebody disagreeing as a personal attack.

Obertan hasn’t been at the races so far today, that doesn’t wipe out his opening 2 matches and the polemic opinions are the only kind I ignore eg “He’s finished.”, “Not a footballer.”, yada yada yada. His stats back up the fact he is a useful player from time to time, as does the fact he’s contributed to some decent runs when he has been in the team.

Colback has made 2 iffy passes that caused us trouble. Pointing that out doesn’t represent an attack on him.

See how we take to the task second-half.

  • 270 LGFUAD21 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:51 PM

Abeid looked hopefull but he certainly wasn’t a dm in my opinion. He was similar to anita with a bit more strength and slightly more creativity.

I think willo could well have already picked up the phone. It’s clear he’s not wanted by Schteeve.

I think the players we saw most in pre season are the ones that Schteeve wasn’t too sure about and wanted to give them one last chance before trying to get rid.

@Noel & Jack – It really isn’t that hard to understand … Colo, Colback and Obertan get a disproportionate amount of blame – they are the easy scapegoats. When they play well or do something well very few point it out but when they make a mistake they are jumped on.

It isn’t people saying it as they see it, because they don’t do the same for every other player in the team.

p.s – Colback isn’t even close to being my favourite player – I just appreciate his effort and role in the team.

From this I feel that as the season progresses we have the making of a good team.

Haidara is not a starter. Just about good enough as cover. Need a replacement for Santon.

Would rather not see obertan start every week. Think he can do a job coming off the bench but not consistant enough, first touch oftern terrible.

Perez has been by far our best player. Seeing him playing off mitrovic as a striker would be best rather than deeper in the midfield.

Colos looked the part. Would like to see another CB in but not sure if it needs to be a 20mil starter in Abdennour. Would be happy with van diijt for 8 mil. then spend the rest on Austin maybe or top class winger.

We all hate negative tactics. But a draw and a clean sheet at old Trafford against a team that has had a good start is good.

The focus for us is to pick up point and confidence. And with our opening run to not lose gives us not only value points but belief too.

    For morale and belief.

Mitro superb, Heidara wasteful, Wijnaldum impressed. He needs to be more up front.

Draw is a great result for us given our away record and the last game, especially against Man Utd I would have snapped your hand off if offered before the game.

Our defence and midfield did well today.

Only change would be Obertan. Leave Perez when Sissoko returns. Mitrovic actually looked decent, although needs to cut the falling over for a foul malarky out.

STaylor is a good enough back up for this season. Can’t hack a full one.

Colo was man of match. Proving all the idiots on here who say he is awful wrong. He was quality today!

mbemba was excellent at right back today. dominated depay in the air. but have to say Perez and MItrovic defensive work was absolutely key for us.

  • 483 ronaldo aarons // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:44 PM

We do have potential. When everyone gels we should be a good team but with 2 more signings our team can be a fantastic.

  • 484 davetoon // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:44 PM

If we play that sort of effort I cant wait for the Arsenal game

    That was stressful.
I do sense something has changed.

  • 489 Nufc-83 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:45 PM

In terms of long term building we obv need a tall commanding CB to take over from colo. LB is a must to let haidara develop as he is far to raw. A CM who can tackle but has a good range of passing to take over from coldback or Anita (not sure on which one). Then i would let cisse go and replace with a small quick striker in the bellamy mould. Job done easy 🙂

  • 490 coatesy17 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:46 PM

I think some of you are forgetting we hit the bar with a superb header from Mitrovic too! we could of won that game.

    Noel Worst // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:35 PM

There’s any claims of Thauvin having pace put to bed.

A fresh Thauvin caught up easily by a Shaw with 90mins in his legs.
    —————–

for your information. Shaw is one of the fastest player in the premier league.

Mbemba is a superb signing IMO. Already looking very good.

  • 494 Rotonda heights // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:46 PM

was that perhaps newcastle’s best defensive display in living memory.

Despite a shaky start MBemba was fantastic as were colo, saylor, anita, mitro. Fantastic commitment and organisation, well done SM.

  • 501 toonbrother // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:48 PM

So far this season I have been proven 100% correct!
0 wins in 3 games as i predicted!

Every result i have predicted has come to fruition!
    Without exception

The sad thing about todays result is it will make mclaren complacent about chasing abdennour

The window will close and we will be stuck with COlO as the only left sided central defender which will condemn us and our season

  • 502 davetoon // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:48 PM

Thauvin was clearly not match fit. he couldnt blow out a candle after making that run down the left

  • 503 switch365 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:49 PM

Whole Mackem squad is up for sale, I’d take van Aanholt right now!
Hairdryer needs someone to do battle with for the left back role, another left back, not cb come lb or dm come lb.
    £2m – £2.5m should secure him.
Would prefer Willems but not sure they’d sanction another big fee of £7m

  • 504 the ledge // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:49 PM

Shaw is the quickest left back in the league. Hadira did well no slouch himself

  • 505 LGFUAD21 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:50 PM

  • 506 Novocastrian66 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:50 PM

Man of the match? Taylor, closely followed by Colocinni, closely followed by Mbemba, closely followed by Haidara. Superb.

  • 507 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:51 PM

    @the ledge

agreed. haidara did very well too. but he had alot of defensive support from Ayoze. they shut down the left side very well.

We’re not where want to be but we’re moving in the right direction under schteeve.

  • 511 santon3 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:52 PM

Our left side did well today, especially Perez.
Right side not so good, last week left side, it it because of Obertan?

He’s not quick, take off your Hoddle gogs (he thinks Cisse is quick.).

He is about as quick as Cabella or Perez. Not slow, but pace isn’t one of the main features of his game.

  • 515 Rotonda heights // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:54 PM

schteeve obviously has addressed the swansea result so fair play to him.
Is paul scholes the dullest commentator ever!!!

  • 516 Brian Pinas // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:54 PM

Right. Time to watch Swansea hammer you know who.

  • 517 rwpoynter // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:54 PM

What a performance! Not only a point but a clean sheet as well. I would honestly like all the negative comments about Colo to cease on this blog. Like several others I think Steve McClaren will get the best out of this guy and I think a lot of the other players think that way too. This result will have done the whole club a huge benefit. After today I would be the more worried if I was Luis Van Gaal. Bring on Arsenal! Yes , it is only one game, but compared to the last half of last season, it is a vast improvement.

  • 518 Big Steve // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:54 PM

Talk about a biased pundit. Scholes looks like his faithful old dog has died. Cole sounds good tho. Talking sense.

  • 519 CypriotDelight // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:55 PM

Really enjoyed that in a kind of heart attack, wet pants potential nervous wreck kinda way 🙂

Thought we were dedicated, organised and committed but a wee bit sloppy in giving the ball a way.
Fantastic effort but cud of nicked it….

  • 520 toonbrother // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:55 PM

    @504 LGFUAD21
    Believe it or not
This result is bad for us in the long run
It has probably condemned our season
Because it reduces the urgency of the pursuit of abdennour

If he have to play 10 men behind the ball to produce a solid defensive performance, then we dont deserve to be a premier league side

Unfortunately everytime we play positive football we concede 2 or 3 goals per game because we have a liability like colo at the back

  • 521 Munster Mag // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:55 PM

Great news. Didnt see game as done have BT. Surprised Thauvin was caugt ( believing Noel Worts here ) but he may not be fit and didnt want a hamstring or something. I have always had time for Taylor so pleased to see him do well. It now means that Mbemba can deputise at right back when needed. Colo and Mbemba’s lack of inched will still be an isuse though. Still , who cares. Well done Steve Mac.

  • 522 Belfast // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:55 PM

Cmon toon brother Coloccini was excellent today.

  • 523 pawl250 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:55 PM

    Toonbrother

This bloke is the definition of clueless.

    Tell you what

    Southampton h
Swansea a (half game with 10 men)
    Man Utd a

I didn’t expect 1 point, nevermind 2. Does not take a genius to say we would struggle with our opening 5 games.

You dare go beyond when you look at games beyond that.

Even next week against Arsenal is a loss for me.

Colo was solid today. And is not as bad as most of the clueless people on here make out. Nor is Taylor but he is just injury prone and at times his passion makes him do stupid things.

  • 524 Menelauos // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:55 PM

If Collo and Taylor can keep up form like that’s were in for a good season. Mbemba was solid at holding off Depay. Central midfield was terrible, completely out classed. Mitrovic to score against Arsenal.

  • 525 toon kk // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:56 PM

I’m swinging from the rafters, I expected a 4-0 defeat after Swansea

  • 526 Noel Worst // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:56 PM

As I said, it was a classic Colo performance, backed up by his defensive teammates and the midfield once they warmed to the task, however Man Utds lack of strength and aerial threat cannot be ignored when looking at why it was such a good display. Fellaini would’ve been a real problem if he was available

  • 527 Belfast // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:57 PM

    Stevie Taylor very good too.

The only negative was Obertan waste of space.

no he wasnt he made at least two massive gaffes in the second half
    Saylor was immense
With Colo in the team we will not win a single match
I already bet £100 with JFA we will win 0 in 5 with colo in the starting line up
3 games down 2 to go

  • 531 switch365 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:58 PM

  • 532 TheToonKing // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:58 PM

why are people surprised Thauvin got caught up by Shaw ? He’s not a blistering pace winger. Obertan is much faster then him. Thauvin has that control though.

I was 50-50 on Thauvin today, I thought he could have done better in certain situations. But it was the first 20 mins in a new league.

  • 533 catchy in norway // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:58 PM

many heroes today only one villain OBERTAN,

man u are poor at the back , but do have a top forward line, but i think we did what was needed for this game,

    good man management by SM

    Krul outstanding¨

    colo and saylor outstanding

chancel not a RB but gave a solid showing and had no protection from obertan

haidara and perez on the left were efective and worked well together

Anita colback and gino, all ahd good games in my book.

mitrovic, wow, the boy is gona be a star in this league

    subs all did well

  • 534 santon3 // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:59 PM

I hope Colo starts against Northampton

  • 535 CypriotDelight // Aug 22, 2015 at 3:00 PM

Colo was immense today. Krul was brill and Taylor did really well. So many played well and as a team it was great to see. Colback had a few shakey back passes and Cisse’s first touch let him down on the counter but I am happy to take the point.

No point looking at ‘what ifs’. Onwards and upwards if we can keep the same tempo and dedication.

We really did the enforcer, its exactly the type of player we need and need to keep.

    My line up next game.

    Mbemba——- Taylor ——-Colo——-new LB

  • 542 Nufc-83 // Aug 22, 2015 at 3:02 PM

Noel – shaw is rapid by far one of the fastest in prem. A winger only needs good acceleration to beat players not top sprint speed anyway.

  • 543 davetoon // Aug 22, 2015 at 3:02 PM

@Noel – not sure Fellaini wouldve done that much damage as the Mancs had no width at all. Not sure why VanGaal doesnt play Young or buy more wingers as they are narrow and allowed us to defend as everyone knows we are susceptible to the high cross yet we saw little of that today.
Having said that Mbemba did win a few hopefull balls outside the box that gave us hope for when he is back alongside Colo

  • 546 SPRINGY // Aug 22, 2015 at 3:11 PM

    Great team performance….
Krul. ..good but kicking needs work
Mbemba..struggled at first but settled and put in great tackles and blocks
Haidara…much improved from 1st two games pressed and got forward needs a bit crossing practice
Colo…said he needed to up his game and be more commanding…and he step up and done it
Taylor…solid enough but still made nervous
Colback….grafted hard but had some shaky moments and his passing was not the best
Anita….grafted but seemed to disapear a bit in second half
Perez….grafted like a man who wants 1st team football…and if he keeps playing like that should do….one thing do a bit work with his left foot so can cross more
Obertan….grafted his pace gave us an out but his confidence closed that out (if you know what I mean)
Gini….looked a class act in 1st half strong quick and clever….just had to graft in 2nd half
Mitro…grafted hard and showed some moments of lookin like a ryt handful without lookin like he’d get sent off..when his match sharpness is there its lookin good business…unlucky with a crackin header
Cisse…wasn’t on long but his touch let him down when running thru needs ti work hard in that
Thauvin…not long on but showed willingness to graft and a couple of nice touches….unlucky his big toe wasn’t a bit bigger!lol
Ref was weak… man utd players were diving all over and clattering us and bottled the bookings….great point overall….well done lads
