Here’s Newcastle’s Passion In One Simple Photograph

10:59 pm, Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 74 Comments

Here is a photograph of Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul, and they were Newcastle’s two best players in our Man of the Match poll with 47% and 13% respectively.

It shows them at the end of the game today at Old Trafford, after Newcastle had put in a tremendous performance of guts, courage and fortitude to keep a clean sheet, and it’s not often the Red Devils fail to score at Old Trafford.

They had won their previous three games this season, but not today.

tim krul and fab coloccini at end of game

And you thought they didn’t care?

We did really well for only having 30% of the ball and struggling to get out of our own half.
But at least we kept a clean sheet.

Nantes and st.Etienne want obertan and gouffran apparently.
I’d be happy if we signed dunk and sent Williamson to Brighton, that would be deemed as a successful window.

Watch Ben Arfa goal today and see how his haters should stop watching football

    That Ben Arfa goal….

  • 9 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:29 PM

Ben Arfa is still brilliant, he has his pace back on.

And no we should not move on, he is a player we loved, and probably will not have another player of that calibre for a while.

Wish we could get him back.

  • 10 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:32 PM

yes haters have no idea what a cracker of a footballer is.

All the good ones tend to have an attitude, Zlatan, Ben Arfa, Robert, Bellamy, Balloteli. etc

Pitty we didn’t have a manager at the time to coax the best out of him. Pardew was the wrong manager but so is McLaren.

  • 11 WWSBRD // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:33 PM

That Benny goal is alright, may of been different had any of the players around him put a tackle in like

Benny is happy where he is and we can all be happy for him but no as a team we dont miss him imo

  • 12 toon kk // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:44 PM

Ban Afra doesn’t play for us anymore.
its like pards isn’t our manager, they have moved on and we also have.

  • 13 jimmysmith // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:45 PM

Newcastle need to turn up like that against all opposition, and we’ll be more than fine. We have many very good players, but the gulf in class is still quite pronounced. That was one of the most one sided games I’ve ever seen. Even so, that was a team that ran tirelessly for each other on the day. Which is a great sign. Mbemba will lose his place for the moment, I think, despite being very good and Cisse may leave, because Mitrovic will now be first choice, and Iberian is in a similar position withe signing of Thauvin, who also looks ready to play.

  • 14 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:52 PM

Goal was alright…? It was a wonderful goal, and it is exactly the type of skill that a crowd should see at a professional game. Not a load of sloggers clocking up cross country miles over 90 minutes. Acceleration, skill, finishing, excellent.

    Should still be here.

I might be going to a Nice game to see him play. I’ve been discussing it with a mate this week.

On the game today, good last ditch defending, but having belief in possession is what is needed. Keep the ball better, and they don’t get to have as many waves of attack. SM needs time to get his ideas across.

  • 15 pawl250 // Aug 22, 2015 at 11:54 PM

Who the !?!? cares about Ben Arfa man.

Tell you something you need to know about him….. He is a waste of space!

How do I know this? When he was FREE to go anywhere nobody even sniffed at him. That’s how “world class” he is.

He is playing in a league were Cabella got 14 goals, Obertan was just as dangerous and Riviere could actually score a goal. He should be scoring goals week in week out if he is this god of a footballer.

One thing Pardew did do right was not bow to the imbecile. Or fan pressure for that matter.

  • 16 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:02 AM

@gorgonzola – I wouldn’t exactly agree with that theory….Henry, Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Beckenbauer, Ronaldo (brazilian), Iniesta, Xavi, Pirlo, Pele, Gerrard, Zola, Bergkamp…..etc. Bit of stupid blinkered statement to be honest!

@pawl – because some people think it was the wrong decision (or the truth should be stated). And that was a great goal. Many of us like seeing great goals. Because we like football.

  • 17 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:02 AM

M8 he used to do that in the PL too you know.

Sure players have an attitude. But to say he was cr@p at us is a pure lie.
He actually was great at NUFC. Not all the time but If I recall when he played there was a moment where anything could happen and it usually did.

    Laurent Robert 32

Mate good luck to you. I would love to go to Nice too I don’t live in Europe atmo, but cool gesture to go see him.

  • 18 toon kk // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:03 AM

Yeah great to keep a clean sheet but we were poor really, man u really dictated the whole game. But we worked hard which is something that we often don’t see.

  • 24 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:28 AM

    He is a rubbish player.

He no doubt has skill going forward but half the time he would lose the ball.

He is a renowned MOTD player. Highlights make him look better than he actually is

  • 25 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:30 AM

I’m not having a go! I just find that “maverick footballer” thing is just an excuse to get away with things and be lazy! They get that reputation and people stop criticising players for not running around and acting like a d**k because it’s “just how they are”.

Look at Balotelli. He’s becoming more known for his stupid vain hair than any goals he scores. He literally contributes nothing to football at the moment because he’s acted ridiculously at Liverpool. Yet it’s almost accepted, because “He’s that type of player”.

I’m not having a go at you at all, it’s just something that irritates me.

  • 26 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:32 AM

    Robert was a better player.

Only downside was him not helping out which in the modern game is a must.

And before people say he would be wasted in defense look at the likes of Silva, Tours, Iniesta the list goes on all hard working players who stand heads and shoulders above Ben Arfa

  • 27 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:32 AM

    @pawl – and Messi’s a seriously average holding midfielder….

  • 28 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:34 AM

Messi works hard, but even if he didn’t you can actually afford to have a player who scores you 50 goals a season not tracking back…..

    Benny didn’t even reach 10!

  • 29 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:35 AM

It would be like comparing a Ferrari to a Peugeot 207

You are way off the radar for comparisons.

  • 30 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:42 AM

…I’ll just say this. This thing about “the modern game is ___” is ludicrous. There are so many variables and ways of playing this game that to just say “this is how it is now” to fit your particular argument isn’t fair or correct.

A few years ago, possession was EVERYTHING with Barcelona and Spain going between their incredibly conservative “knock it about the back 4 for 30 minutes” to their absolute brilliant best. Then Bayern beat Barcelona and it was modulated.

Any style can beat any style.

Plus, to take what is effectively a scale comparison as a literal one is disingenuous.

  • 31 switch365 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:45 AM

Beast is going to be devastating once we start supplying him, he already has the physique, the skill and the nous. Once he finds that fine balance between control and aggression he’ll start dominating defences.
Ayoze has to play without doubt, he put in more graft today than a whole team during the dark days of Carver. A truly wonderful all round display from a striker who tackles like a defender.
Gini is just oozing class, in a month or so he’ll wipe away any lingering memory of Cabaye, began to fade a bit in the second half, but unsurprising with all that pressure.

  • 32 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:48 AM

    I agree.

Our best team would be this most likely based on recent games….

    Janmaat Mbemba Coloccini Haidara
    Anita Colback
    Sissoko Wijnaldum Perez

I would like to see De Jong get back to his best too and maybe Wijnaldum to drop in for Colback/Anita

  • 33 LGFUAD21 // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:03 AM

    Give over with Benny.

He did nowt for us. Or hull.

    Great player, bad attitude.

If he did that every week fine but he didn’t.

He’s a big fish in a small pond in France. Could’ve been brilliant for us. Pardew can shoulder some blame but he also failed to deliver more than not.

Best of luck Benny. Let’s move on.

  • 34 JP...from The Rock // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:29 AM

Ed you should do a ‘Who was the WORST player today’ poll too. I bet most would rightfully say Overtan who was absolutely useless today and offered nothing at all. He was dead awful and back to his crappy self again. We need to get rid of this inconsistent player ASAP.

Colback was another that had a game to forget as well. Terrible pass thoughout the match and truly out of character as his passing is usually spot on.

It was as if we were play with 9 men all game yet still managed a draw.

But that performance by Obertan was a real stinker and should be no where near the first team. Get rid please! McClaren you know what to do!

  • 35 JP...from The Rock // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:30 AM

As pleasing as the performance was we were extremely lucky to come out of it with a draw tbh. We didn’t have a single shot on target and barely had the ball most of the game. Yet I am proud of the lads today as they showed fight and character that was all missing from last season. We’ve proved we can defend as a team when we want to and I just loved to see Mitrovic chase the ball back like a man possessed. Thauvin looked lively when he came on and I pray to God that means the end of Obertan who offers nothing at all, not attacking wise nor defending wise. He’s shite and today he just proved it again after fooling some including me for the first two games. Get Rid Asap!

I think we should be wise in gettig another CM as Anita although has been playing well is a bit lightweight and Colback is OK, but then who do we have to play there if they get injured? Tiote, Wijnaldum? Neither is a proper CM. Would love it if in January we went for Grenier again. But right now I would love it if we get Sam Byram, that kid will be something special soon.

  • 36 Blofal // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:43 AM

Perez is a must start for me in midfield. Every time he got the ball he had the skill to turn and take us forward when every other player was passing backwards. I think McClaren would have noticed that too.

  • 37 Toon-Prodigy // Aug 23, 2015 at 2:41 AM

Perez was brilliant today, he has to start for me. Obertan should be dropped. It’s a shame about the lad because he can really shift like. Was impressed with Thauvin for his cameo, especially his step over and getting the lad booked with his first touch.

Mitrovic still dosn’t look 100% fit to me, I think there is still more to come from him. He tired greatly towards the end of the first and second half today but did get back to help out well still at times.

Haidara, still not convinced with the lad.

Still think Cisse and Sissoko will leave, if they do then I really hope they are replaced otherwise our bench will not be as strong and we will suffer once injuries occur. The bench looks fine at the moment, it would be a shame to sell players and not replace them, it really would.

  • 38 AncientC // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:41 AM

Overrated performance, if Hernandez’s effort had gone in, we would be slating the team and its 30% possession.

Great result considering how outperformed the side were.

  • 39 lukes26 // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:42 AM

I suspect Steve was doing the typical thing managers do and allowed Obertan to start today even though his starting position is obviously Thauvin’s now.

I don’t understand the strategy of bringing Cisse on as a super sub. He’s not going to race past tired defenders.

Newcastle desperately need a CM. Tiote looks no where near being match fit.

  • 43 Magpie Season // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:10 AM

Those worrying about Haidara’s ability, he is not even our first choice left back is he? Dummett is.

I also think Coloccini & Taylor is our best centre-halves pairing. The 5th season they played majority of the games & I think since they know each other the longest both are comfortable playing together.

As for Mbemba, one thing I learn yesterday is that for a big lad he has a fair bit of pace & maybe could be RB & swap Janmaat over to othe left?

I mean, Van Der Wiel is first choice for Holland, if Janmaat wants to get back in the team LB 1st may be better option.

  • 44 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:51 AM

Magpie Season…there alot of issues with your post I think.

First: In the 2012/13 season; if that’s the you are referring to:
    Saylor started 24 games
    Colo started 22 games
    Willo started 19 games

Second: I think Haidara is first choice LB

Third: If you want a RB then buy a RB. Same goes for a LB.
Mbembe is bought as a CB. He’s needed there, actually we need one more. Don’t be blinded by one game (there were actually plenty of problems with that game I’ll leave for now)

  • 45 jeraziah // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:54 AM

^ Swedish news reporting that 16-year old Isak Jönsson who is a Swedish CB is coming to Newcastle for a one week trial.

    He’s a talent!

  • 46 Ron Knee // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:55 AM

Having re-watched some of the match, I think Krul should have taken up rugby instead of football. How many times did he kick for touch yesterday?

No wonder we had only 30% possession. Our passing was appalling!

  • 47 Magpie Season // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:01 AM

I really thought Dummett was our 1st choice LB & Haidara was only playing because he is injured?

Dummet played LB & was 1st choice last season wasn’t he? Then Dummet HAD to play CB because of injuries & Haidara played LB alongside him.

What does that mean for Dummett then?

  • 48 hibbit // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:06 AM

ron ..the result was good a lot of teams will go to old trafford and try to keep a clean sheet i think in this case the end justifies the means

  • 49 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:08 AM

Morning Ron…the midfield got over run in the second half and SM forgot to do something about that 😉

I am glad the defense kept the ball out of our goal – it could have been 4 goals easily, but the defense should have been better at absorbing the pressure and to play in out from the back.

They were heroic yesterday but far from great (I am expecting something else at this level)

The subs I think came to late in a game there Mitro was isolated feeding from scraps. Thauvin should have been on earlier and what does it help when you put on Tiote for Perez (he was knackered I agree). It counters the effect of Thauvin who understandably went missing after that.

And to top it all off Cisse gets thrown in as a lone striker. Beside that one attempt I didn’t see him.

That’s my review if the game. So I’ll take that one point but that’s about it.

  • 50 Big Archie // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:10 AM

Brilliant result but 70-30 possession says more about the game than the scoreline.

  • 51 Ron Knee // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:13 AM

You’re right. It was great to come away with a point but I’m not sure the plan was to play so defensively. We rarely managed to mount a serious attack because our passing was so poor.

  • 52 Ron Knee // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:22 AM

    Morning Jesper
    ‘Heroic’ sums it up.

You could question McClaren’s tactics but if players can’t execute the basics …

I think the rot set in when Cabaye wasn’t replaced.

  • 53 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:23 AM

    Watched the replay. Match analysis
We have one of the best keepers in the world without doubt with good goal keeping coaching. He loves the club and I think he will b one club man. Academy product.
Mbemba was superb but not a right back doesn’t know wen to attack but he was solid at the back
Colo & Taylor know each other very well but we still have an aerial threat problem. We are very good on the floor so they played our game. Luckily Manure didnt have a 6″0 foot striker
Haidara was immense good going forward solid at the back.
Defence was solid but I think its because no aerial threat but on the floor no one will b able to beat us.
    Holding Midfielders:
Anita and Colback are now married know how to play their game when to go forward wen to stay coz once the FBs fly they stay to cover which is good to watch. They shld go to gym more and get stronger.
Wijnaldum no comment same old story. Guy is good.
Perez played well good going forward good to help Haidara. Thats wat Haidara needed in the first games. Obertan not good defensively.
Obertan no comment. He is back up nothing more.
    Mitrovic very immense.
    Thauvin will play worked hard.
Tiote thats his new role to kill off games
Cisse thats his new role super sub.

  • 54 cole the goal // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:28 AM

Man united only really had 1 or 2 chances all game

Brilliant defence, never said that in while, very well organised

Typical of people on here, still doom and goom, twist on 21 half of these nackers

Against a ManU side lacking pace and variation I thought yesterday was our best defensive performance since we beat Chelsea last season. This was the sort of commitment that has been lacking and the tactical formation was excellent.
Mitrovic gives us that physical presence up front that has been lacking. Perez and Thauvin to start against Arsenal.
I anticipate a fairly strong side against Northampton to improve squad fitness levels.

Love his passion though, that header was unbelievable – very unlucky

He offers a lot more than Cisse does like. That first touch from Cisse when we broke away at the end was absolutely woeful lol

I’m not even sure he meant to cross it.

  • 62 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:46 AM

Ron…you are right as always mate 🙂 the basics should be in place and the passing was sub standard.

It was one of the reasons the midfield got over run. Colback was the main culprit. He really had a poor game and SM should have sub’ed him early on in the second half.

But as always the subs are too little too late at this club (and he got them oh so wrong yesterday)

  • 63 cole the goal // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:48 AM

Belfast – He’s permeanantly disorientated. Just passing through. Good to see all the newcomers make very good contributions- augurs well.
Your understanding of a critique is not mine – and if done a good number, mate and not in here.. You see it as a fault finding and negative means of ” having a go”. Whereas I don’t see it in a negative sense to provide balance and a fair balanced assessment.
Thats all I ask if you.

  • 66 JDdubai // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:50 AM

Think we missed a trick in the last 20mins, it was crying out for Aarons pace to use on the counter – the front three were knackered by 70mins understandably, if we had Aarons on then he could have kept the ball to release some pressure and offered a goal threat as well

A little worried that he isnt being used by McClaren.

  • 67 Ian Toon // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:50 AM

  • 68 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:53 AM

One team came to defend the other to Attack. we came out of top. Still scared of the Aerial threat though.
If we can defend like that then how are going to score.

Perez and Thauvin good WF but cut in. That means Haidara and Janmatt to woop in the crosses for Mitrovic.

Sissoko to get back in the team we have to drop either Anita or Perez. Perez we need him forward and can score goals & Anita has played well and knows is needed in 4-2-3-1 system only of can pull Wijanldum back to cover as Anita has does. Or to change formation. and kill off Haidara.

  • 69 sing in the corner // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:56 AM

Van Gaal was at his petulent, arrogant best after the game, saying only one team wanted to win it. Now, I know what he is saying but do these ”top’ managers expect so called inferior sides to turn up and just roll over? Get real man! Its refreshing to see us go to this type of place, set up with 2 banks of four, a quick counter attacking threat, and be hard to beat. Suck it up Louis.

  • 70 sing in the corner // Aug 23, 2015 at 8:06 AM

Good result in the end, and I agree with the majority in that Colback had a sub standard game yesterday. I expect him to get pelters all week for it too…My point is that he gets no credit for the unsung stuff he regularly does. I think the criticism of him is often way over the top and people want to repeatedly weigh into him whenever he puts a foot wrong. We’re still searching for the right combination in the middle. Its not Anita and Colback, I think most agree on that.

  • 71 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 23, 2015 at 8:12 AM

  • 72 calvinzolamakongo // Aug 23, 2015 at 8:18 AM

Perez is quality he looked like a leader out there to me every attack went through him apart from the break away good to see he can have a free role but still put the work in to help haidara just wish he shot first time early in the first half when he was free in the box

  • 73 Slank // Aug 23, 2015 at 8:19 AM

    My take on the players:

Krul: Excellent. Back to his best. Will give confidence to the back four.

Mbemba: Worthy stand in. Very athletic. Better than Janmaat ?

Taylor: Strong and committed. Combines well with Colo. Better than Mbemba ?

Colo: Captains performance. Assured and commanding. MOTM. Fortunate no ManU centre forward ?

Haidara: Excellent going forward. Still learning his defensive duties.

Anita: Very industrious. Never gave up. Ninety minute engine. Harried and hassled all match.

Colback: Also very industrious and also a ninety minute engine. Is Tiote better ?

Gini: Real class act. Extremely quick and easily outpaced his opponents. Very good link up play. Will score goals.

Obertan: Hot and cold. Very inconsistent. Don’t see him as first choice.

Perez: Never stopped. Worked extremely hard. Always looks a goal threat as he is more a number 10 than a winger. He would thrive in a 4-4-2 formation alongside Mitrovic.

Mitrovic: A power house. Worked hard and effective in his defensive duties. Excellent hold up play and a player we have missed since Shearer hung up his boots. Will cause quite a few centre backs problems.

Subs: McClaren timing and choice was spot on:
Tiote: Did what he does best and breaks the play up.
Cisse: Kept their defence occupied and nearly laid on the winning goal for Thauvin.
Thauvin: Looks like he has skills, pace and an excellent left foot. Has to be on the left wing.

Looking at the possible line ups:
Every one in his favourite position. I put Dummett coz I dont know Thauvinz defensive side. Haidara played well coz Perez really helped him. so needs a WF that really helps him. But If Thauvin is good defensively then I throw back Haidara coz I need a crosser for Mitrovic.

Pull back yo accommodate Perez and I start Haidara coz I know Perez is good defensively. Wijnaldum is box to box midfielder.

    ……………Mbemba…….Taylor. ……Colo
    Janmatt……………..Wijnaldum. …………..Thauvin
Bring in Taylor to try with the Aerial threat
