Newcastle Player Gets Shock Recall To Holland Squad

12:37 am, Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 63 Comments

We’ve been impressed with the form of Vurnon Anita at the end of last season and so far this season, and Vurnon has had his very first call up for the Holland squad since he joined Newcastle three years ago.

Anita is a shock choice by new Holland manager Danny Blind, and three Newcastle players are in the squad, but just like last year Daryl Janmaat has been omitted from the squad.

Vurnon Anita – playing well for Newcastle

Daryl just needs to get his head down and start playing like he did at Newcastle last season, and he’ll soon get a call-up by Blind and then Newcastle should have four players in the Holland squad.

It’s very good news for Vurnon that he has been recalled, and he could be in for a good season under new coach Stave McClaren since Steve seems to be paying the way the Dutchmen in the squad understand well.

Vurnon played 52 times for all the Dutch youth sides through U21 level, and he has 3 full caps so far for his country.

Holland will play two Euro 2016 qualifiers next month, hosting Iceland on the 3rd of September before travelling to Turkey three days later.

Here’s the Holland squad named by Danny Blind on Friday:

Goalkeepers:Tim Krul (Newcastle United), Jasper Cillessen (Ajax), Jeroen Zoet (PSV), Kenneth Vermeer (Feyenoord)

Defenders:Daley Blind (Manchester United), Jeffrey Bruma (PSV), Virgil van Dijk (Celtic), Terence Kongolo (Feyenoord), Bruno Martins Indi (FC Porto), Jairo Riedewald (Ajax), Kenny Tete (Ajax), Joel Veltman (Ajax), Paul Verhaegh (FC Augsburg), Stefan de Vrij (Lazio), Gregory van der Wiel (Paris St Germain)

Midfielders: Ibrahim Afellay (Stoke City), Vurnon Anita (Newcastle United), Marco van Ginkel (Stoke City), Nigel de Jong (AC Milan), Davy Klaassen (Ajax), Wesley Sneijder (Galatasaray), Georginio Wijnaldum (Newcastle United)

Forwards: Memphis Depay (Manchester United), Bas Dost (VfL Wolfsburg), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke 04), Luuk de Jong (PSV), Jeremain Lens (Sunderland), Luciano Narsingh (PSV), Robin van Persie (Fenerbahçe) , Quincy Promes (Spartak Moscow), Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich)

Comments welcome.

Go on Luuk De Jong haha!

Not sure if Anita deserves this but best of luck with it anyway.. He hasn’t been outstanding to me.

  • 2 jimmysmith // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:12 AM

No Fellaini, I have just discovered, so Vurnon I guess will likely hold his place in midfield on merit, but you still have to worry about him and Colback together against the likes of Scweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Januzay and even Michael Carrick, and surely he won’t be picked at rightback, and risk being isolated and against the pace and power of Depay.

  • 3 JackButler // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:17 AM

Anita will come good in a ball playing team, players who are technically gifted were wanted under Pardew as the vast majority of the time they were bypassed by a massive hoof upfield.

Under SM he will do very well

  • 4 JackButler // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:19 AM

    Not wanted

  • 5 Mister Tuff // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:28 AM

I see van Gaal says his recent idea is to play Carrick and replace him with Schweinsteiger. So I don’t think their midfield is going to run out of steam. We need to get at them from the off with the new players starting.

  • 6 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 22, 2015 at 1:41 AM

A very good player Anita. His ball playing from deep is very crucial for us in building attack. But he needs a bigger and more powerful player beside him. Colback and Anita in centre does not sync.

A player like an in-form Tiote might be what we need to bring the best of Anita.

Fellaini is still suspended in the Premier League from last season. This is his last match he is suspended.

  • 8 swemag // Aug 22, 2015 at 2:19 AM

Fellaini plays for a different city, Brussels. It is the capital of Luxemland.

  • 9 armajam // Aug 22, 2015 at 3:37 AM

So no Janmaat tomorrow… Clearly gonna struggle down the right with Memphis bombing down the left. Thinking Mbemba will be Rb, but wot u think of Gini on the right wing, he knows Depay from PSV and maybe could help counteract him? Looks like Sissoko is out so SDJ as no 10?

  • 10 Magpie Season // Aug 22, 2015 at 3:54 AM

    Anyone fancy Jonny Evans?

Apparently he has been told he is free to leave.

  • 11 sing in the corner // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:39 AM

This game has come at a bad time for us and I’m not feeling too upbeat about our chances at this stage (there’s rarely a good time to go to Old Trafford for us).
Ideally we would have Tiote fit and sharp to battle it out in MF – but he’s not even close. Janmaat’s absence is the worst possible timing – not in great form and would have had a tough game. But I fear for someone like Anita or Taylor right side of defence against these.
So i fully expect us to get overrun IF Man U click into gear. Also predict Anita and Colback will be blamed for trouble in the middle of the park, when the reality they will not be supported by those around them retaining the ball well. SDJ and Sissoko, if fit, give us other important options we just don’t have.
Having said that Man U are playing poorly and 6 points from 2 belies their form. Not the worst time to be playing them on that front.
I tend to agree with earlier posts hoping for Mitro to start, with Aarons / Perez to link up with him. Give em something to occupy them…think that’s our best bet. Ifs and buts though…

  • 12 zidane10 // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:47 AM

anita is a excellent one touch short passing total football type possession player, we used tp play long ball out dated football under pardew so he struggled, only problem for anita is that colback is a long ball champonship type player so he makes anita struggle. anita football brain is too advanced for colback. we should have kept abied and sold colback.

  • 13 zidane10 // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:52 AM

i dont understand the criticism for cisse he single handidly saved us from relegation. he needs good service just like shearer needed it, cisse goals per chance and goals per min is the best in the league.

  • 14 will die for the toon army // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:22 AM

I cant believe Mcca as a board member is not pushing for signing a CB. He has seen NUFC ever since he stopped playing and he doesnt see we are poor there.

Abdennour shld b signed by NUFC and a RB back up in Bryam and we will be competitive. Lets not yake experments. Put Competition on Mbemba and Colo.

  • 15 JDdubai // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:33 AM

    Sissoko(if fit)-Wini-Aarons

If sissoko isnt fit then most liekyl Obertan will start, id still bring in Aarons and have Thauvin as sub to come on.
Mitrovic to start, enough of these pointless sub appearances, lets give him so minutes.
Think Mbemba is best suited out of what is available to handle Depay.

Think Man U arent in top form, if we can keep it tight for the first 25mins and not make stupid mistakes then we can definitely create chances. Key is no defensive mistakes.

  • 16 sing in the corner // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:52 AM

Agree..Its the old adage…keep it very tight for the first half hour. Hopefully they won’t come out of the blocks like the old Fergie Man U used to.
Counter attack with pace. Slim chance today though IMO. Too many holes and fitness / absence issues, the side is not bedded in at all. SM / new coaching regime needs to start having effect soon.

  • 17 sing in the corner // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:54 AM

    …and I’m usually over optimistic! 🙂

  • 18 will die for the toon army // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:58 AM

    Playing Charnely:
    Wijnaldum – 14.5m
    Mitrovic – 12m
    Thauvin – 13m
    Abdennour – 15m
    Sam Bryam – 8m
    Mbemba – 8.5m
    TOTAL = 71m

    Cabella – 7m
    Vuckic – 3m
    Fergie & Bigi – 2m
    Goufrann – 3m
    Marvuex – 3m
    Abeid – 2m
    Santon – 2.5m
    Willo – 2m
    TOTAL = 24.5m

    NET SPENT = 46.5m

Why keep Marvuex and Gouffann while u can sell them and Get a back up RB. Sell all the other useless players who cant improve our squad and get us defenders. We should have a squad that is competitive and playerz who can play not players on holiday. I think only Willo and Cabella are the only players on sale that can play an EPL game and make an impact we sell them to bring better. The rest are deadwood and are jst in the team to make numbers and on holiday.
Mcca and Charnely & Carr dont act smart sell the deadwood. We have seen these players for the last 5 yrs wat will make them better. You have bought well now sell well and get us defenders.

    GK: Krul, Darlow, Elliott
    RB: Janmaat, Bryam
    LB: Dummett, Haidara
CB: Abdennour, Mbemba, Colo, Taylor, Lasceles
    CM: Wijnaldum, Colback, Anita, Tiote
    CAM: Sissoko, De Jong
    RM: Thauvin, Obertan
    LM: Aarons, Perez
    CF: Mitrovic, Cisse, Rivere.

Darlow, Colo, Anita, Aarons, De Jong, Obertan, Cisse.

    one word clueless

  • 20 will die for the toon army // Aug 22, 2015 at 6:54 AM

McClaren has discussed the defensive situation with managing director Lee Charnley and
chief scout Graham Carr, but with this summer’s net outlay already standing at more than
£46m, the trio have concluded that there is no pressing need for further additions ahead of
the transfer deadline on September 1.
There is still an outside chance that a defender could arrive in the next ten days, but as
things stand, McClaren does not anticipate any more signings.
“We have talked about that (the defensive side of things), but our squad is big enough at the
moment,” he said. “There are ten days to go so anything can happen, but right now, we sit
“I’m very pleased with what we’ve got, very pleased. I think that’s it for now, but how many
times have you heard, ‘That’s it for now’ with ten days of the window to go?
“We are not expecting, we are not chasing anything. We are not trying to make things
happen. Usually with ten days to go things might happen, but at the moment we are
    delighted with what we have.”

Mcca really wen you still have useless players like Marvuex, Goufrann, Bigi, Fergie, Vuckic. Non of those can play right back and cant improve our squad in the EPL.
Charnely, Carr and Mcca please dont disappoint us without signing defenders pliz atleast one more.
Willo is not that bad a back up if he is to play one or two games. it will b bad if its a long term injury to starter whic has happened over and over in the last seasons.
Bring in a CB to put competition on Colo and Mbemba coz they look untouchable and am not convinced with them. No competition for Janmaat either.

Sell the deadwood and get us defenders (CB and RB)

  • 21 Toon-Prodigy // Aug 22, 2015 at 6:54 AM

Not feeling good at all about today. Not an ounce of optimism, this team just feels totally out of sorts to me at the minute.

It’s going to take time, 10-12 games is about right to see where we are.

I just hope we don’t get mauled. Arsenal after this aswell.

  • 22 will die for the toon army // Aug 22, 2015 at 7:09 AM

I wld have been really optimistic if we wld have signed another CB. Mbemba and Colo are good defenders but we need a dominant CB in the air. Coz all our goals last season where from the air and we have done nothing to improve it.
It has happened on 3 occasions now. That makes it 90% of goals conceeded are aerial.

We have 91% of our tackles so that means we are good on the floor. Its the aerial threat that scares me.

If he sits back, then we will get our usual twatting there.

They are not that good and I would recommend having a go at them from the start. Play a front 4 of Thauvin, Wijnaldum, Aarons and Mitrovic and get the defence to push up.

  • 27 sing in the corner // Aug 22, 2015 at 7:18 AM

It was inevitable that this run of fixtures at the start of the season was / is going to be a huge challenge. There’s a massive hangover from last season in particular but also from a few years of underinvestment / thrifty management.
Its frustrating when you buy good players that you can’t just all hit the ground running and gel and it all comes off well straight away.
Anyone expecting that to happen just reflects the FIFA / fantasy football / Football Manager age we find ourselves in.
Players coming from different leagues round the world nowadays annoyingly usually take a while to find their feet.

  • 28 Nufc-83 // Aug 22, 2015 at 7:21 AM

Jack butler I really think you have limited football knowledge based on your support of cisse who is clearly garbage (it’s like playing with 10 men from the start) and your support of Anita. Don’t get me wrong Anita is not the worst player in the team but please tell me what attributes he has in his locker apart from quick passing? For his position he is not strong, good in the air, good in the tackle, good range of passing (apart from 5 yards), can’t dribble, no creative vision, limited shot. Would it be too much to ask for a player who has two or three of these abilities rather than just quick short passing?? I bet you a supporter of overran aswell??

It looks like Mcca knows his targets Top 8 and a cup. but I think he wants to install it in his squad and not put pressure on them quickly. A manager who aint experienced wld b talking abt Top 6 with signings we have made and big up Mcca. he is taking it slow.

On Anita, If only I get the Anita that played westham but lately I see an Anita Toon_83 has jst described.

We’re not blessed with decent defenders, but I’d put Taylor in at RB rather than Mbemba. He has played there in the past whereas Mbemba hardly at all.
The central pairing would then be Mbemba and Colo.
A point today at Old Trafford would be massive, but I’m not optimistic of getting one.

  • 39 sing in the corner // Aug 22, 2015 at 7:33 AM

Its a big relief Fellaini is out. He’s capable of booting our diminutive guys about at Old Trafford.
I know the manager has all the info about fitness and recovery at his fingertips and we don’t, but just think it’ll say a lot about SM if he picks Tiote and / or Sissoko for this game, particularly to start. Sissoko’s groin needs more time, Tiote just can’t be fit. He looked like he was moving through wet sand last time out.
Hope Mitro has sharpened up a bit with another week’s training under his belt.

Hibbit to be honest there is not a great choice. If tiote was even half back to his best then he would replace Anita but based on his performance the other day he is a long way away from the form. Can gini play there?? I want to see de Jong playing so maybe drop gini from no10 role into cdm. I want Aaron’s on the wing for overran and mitro up top ( really worried about his aggression though). Would also like to see more of Perez who was are second best player last season behind jaanmat who has started poorly this season and I read on here comments about what a bad player he is!!! Some people are really clueless.

Jst analysing wat our Gaffer is saying when he first came he talked abt Top 8 and Cup. Now he has cooled it as MA keeps looking for horses.

Perez is a good player and I want to see him on that pitch. with Mitrovic starting.

MA has bought the horse but his cart lacks one wheel.

  • 47 killers_perm // Aug 22, 2015 at 7:44 AM

I agree with all comments saying we should try and trim out the deadwood / not good enough players, but guys, this isn’t FIFA or Football Manager – you can’t just sell a player instantly because you no longer want him. Some fans on here have quite unrealistic expectations – they believe that there is a queue of suitable & willing clubs ready to take our failures off our hands. Most of the players being touted as ‘to be sold’ are on decent wages (for what they actually do) which neither the player or their agent are likely to accept cuts on, plus when they have been at a top club like ours with top facilities etc they are not going to want to move to a championship or equivalent. Those generally being listed will constitute a large chunk of weekly wages which until they have gone will prevent SMc from bringing in much more. Previously Pardew sold big earners to allow him to buy big earners whilst 8/9 lower wage earners stayed under the radar, took their money and did sod all.

It is still going to take another season and 2 windows before we really see the cr5p gone and a squad made up of good effective Prem standard players

After last weekend this is SM chance to change it i would like to see perez next to mitro, mitro will unsettle defenders and thats what we need and with perez next to him pulling them all over the shop. Aarons is a must today we need more pace. Its going to take time to find the right balance and change the way we play.

I think we have 1 point more than we would have last season and this is a very tough month.

  • 51 sing in the corner // Aug 22, 2015 at 7:59 AM

Yeah, I was just having a look at our squad / contracts – you’re right of course about the much maligned ‘dead wood’. Just my humble opinion but I think we should take anything and cut our losses when it comes to:
Willo; Marvo; Ferguson (disappointed there, used to think he would make it couple of years ago); Taylor; Obertan. All out of contract June 2016 so if it has to be release then so be it.
Unfortunately Gouffran and (to a lesser extent Tiote) still have til summer 2017 to go on contract.
And even more obviously we need replacements if dreams came true and there was some sort of fire sale.

  • 52 will die for the toon army // Aug 22, 2015 at 8:01 AM

Obertan, Taylor, Willo, Mbabu, Fergie, Vuckic still in the last year of their contract.

Probably Thauvin & Oberton coming on after 60 mins or so to get at tiring legs.Anita,Colback & Gini in the MF.
    Starting 11
    Mbemba Taylor Collo Haidara
    Anita Gini Colback
    Perez Mitrovic AArons

  • 54 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 22, 2015 at 8:18 AM

I’m pleased for Anita. I said many months ago that he would do well in a side like Swansea which likes to keep the ball moving via passing. Now SM and his coaches are here, rather than the last lot, he has a better chance of playing to that style, just like the foreign players we have in general.

  • 55 SUTTY1978 // Aug 22, 2015 at 8:19 AM

Why not put Colo to RB, he’s useless as a CB and it would mean we have two proficient headers in the middle in Taylor and Mbemba

  • 58 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 22, 2015 at 8:28 AM

Nufc 83, Cisse has scored goals everywhere he’s been, I don’t see how Jack has limited football knowledge. He’d have even more here if he wasn’t played on the wing for half a season, was isolated for lots of games, and had next to no service.

The lad scores goals. He’s usually in the right place at the right time. Give him plenty of good service inside the box and he’ll score goals.

He doesn’t have to be a well rounded player for this reason or that reason, he just has to put the ball in the back of the net when the team has developed patterns of play to create chances for him. Other players get involved in play, do this and that, but fall down at scoring goals, which defeats the purpose. Forwards should score goals, and Cisse clearly does.

If Cisse did have a fantastic all round game and still scored goals, he certainly wouldn’t be playing for us.

  • 59 Nufc-83 // Aug 22, 2015 at 8:35 AM

A team like us can’t afford to have a poacher playing for us as we need someone who offers something to the rest of team. Even Hernandez would be useless for us. On top of that cisse is a terrible finisher and only good when a chance instantly falls his way rather than having time to finish. I would say cisse has missed more 1v1 than he has scored by a long way. So in the case of cisse it’s not like we have even a player who is a good all round finisher.

  • 60 Munster Mag // Aug 22, 2015 at 8:38 AM

Good point lauren but it would be nice if steve can improve his all round game. Nutmeg i agree re your team. Sadly mitro is likely to self combust or something so i dont think he will get the nod but he should.

  • 61 Laurent Robert 32 // Aug 22, 2015 at 8:44 AM

Everyone needs an out and out goal scorer in my opinion. How can a team not want one?

Cisse does miss chances, but so do a lot of the top players. The thing about that is, other players wouldn’t even be in a position to get those chances in the first place. Cisse finds himself in good positions inside the box. Give him a number of chances, and he’ll put them in. Simple as that.

If you see Cisse live in the ground, you see that he’s constantly looking for ways to breach the opposition’s back line, but a lot of the time players don’t see him to play, so don’t give him the ball. Marveaux, when played as a number 10, did very well at this and would find Cisse when he started to make a run.

  • 62 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 22, 2015 at 8:47 AM

Cisse can not play upfront on his own he’s more effective alongside someone picking up the pieces, if he doesn’t need to think about the shot its a goal all day as soon as he needs to think about anything its wasted. Playing 1 upfront makes him isolated get mitro alongside him what have we got to lose.

Another way of looking at it how many goals has paying cisse up top cost us indirectly?? If we had a striker who could build the play and keep possession relieving the pressure on our horrible defence then we may not concede as much and actually have more attacks?
