Video – McClaren BBC Interview – We Were Excellent In Defense

4:19 pm, Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 57 Comments

Head coach Steve McClaren was delighted with the clean sheet at Manchester United today.  There were a number of players who had excellent games, but none better than captain Fabricio Coloccini who had an absolutely great game at the back for us.

Mitrovic hit the bar with a tremendous header in the first half, and then in stoppage time we had a fantastic breakaway after Vurnon Anita had cleared off the line from Chris Smalling.

And as Steve says – we should have scored then – and if we had we would have won it.

But the Red Devils also should have scored a few times today.

Steve McClaren said he was delighted with Newcastle’s excellent defensive  performance today – and it’s two steps forward this week for Newcastle United – after taking one or two steps back in south Wales.

Here is Steve’s BBC interview after the game.

    poor stevie mac
he’s a good coach but he’s going to have to learn the hardway
putting faith in colo is like putting faith in broken down jallopy with no engine or wheels

hard to diasgree. 2 years ago we had the same defensive effort plus a bit of MF magic from Yohan

  • 4 lochinvar // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:26 PM

From previous post…. You’re right ! I didn’t see the game so our mind set was probably not too loose but I just dislike the comments of the likes of Van Gaal , Rodgers and Moanrinio who just whinge too much for my liking !

Palace – can the 4th official disallow a goal ? Looks like it !

  • 5 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:26 PM

    Bourny back in front

  • 6 WWSBRD // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:26 PM

Haha u may well be a better man than I bud

That Mitrovic header and the break away late on wee our chances but Man Utd had plenty more than that, if Ferguson was still in charge we would of lost today

  • 7 hibbit // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:26 PM

toonbrother your like a broken record you need thrown out put up or shut up

  • 8 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:27 PM

From all accounts it was the right call. I think anyone should be allowed to make the decision if it is the correct one.

  • 9 WWSBRD // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:29 PM

Ah fair doos mate I think we got what we went for though. I can understand LVGs frustrations about it, should be aimed at his striker rather than us though

  • 10 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:29 PM

Northhampton getting beat 2-0 at home to Plymouth. Surely we can win that one.

  • 11 TheToonKing // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:29 PM

I think we should start battering Ed to ban ToonBrother.

al he does for the past 12 months is bash Collo and pick fights with everyone. a real life lifeless, useless troll.

  • 12 JackButler // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:30 PM

Trust me mate, it’s bloody hard.

We would have mate not doubt, but by the same token if Pardew was still here we would have been hammered and God forbid what would have happened if the hapless Carver was still at the helm.

    Small victories and baby steps

  • 13 jane // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:31 PM

    will this Palace goal count?

  • 14 nut meg // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:32 PM

Can’t comment on the game because of a poor stream but a very gutsy performance by the sound of it,a real confidence booster and a good point.
Chancel….keep ya pecker up bonny lad, you’ll get there .

  • 15 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:32 PM

It’s his utter lack of logic that gets me. Colo can be responsible if we draw from a winning position, or if we lose, but if we get a 0-0 draw, then how can he be blamed for us not winning? He did his job. Clean sheet today, and from most accounts, he was a big part of it.

Selhurst Park has JDSPORRTS.COM plastered everywhere 🙄

  • 17 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:33 PM

Palace winning. Apparently Pardew had made a good tactical change at half time, according to Kammy. Wonders never cease lol

  • 19 toonbrother // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:36 PM

looks like colo keeps getting entrenched in our team like a virus in one’s bloodstream
Mclaren is a capable tactician but he needs help from real fans to see where the problem lies

  • 20 Noel Worst // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:37 PM

This’ll be Palace’s equivalent of our 5th season, probably finish top half, then they’ll be relegated within the next 2.

Armstrong only hit the woodwork from a free-kick so far today.

  • 21 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:37 PM

For me, i would suggest a 0-0 draw with Colo on the pitch for 90mins counts as JFA winning the bet. He cant be responsible for the strikers not scoring.

  • 28 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:41 PM

Bolton losing. They still havent scored this season

  • 31 Mickalonius // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:44 PM

Toonbrother, you being one of the ‘real’ fans presumably. Colo was immense today, not acknowledging that and continuing with your own personal vendetta with anyone disagreeing with you being, well, not worthy, is irrational. Try being objective.

  • 32 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:45 PM

Wasting your time, fella. He is a wicked little coward.

  • 33 Mickalonius // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:47 PM

Right so, anyway happy with overall effort today and is anyone else excited by what they saw with Mitrovic ? I thought he was really good…

i was impressed with him today and his sharpness is there and the team start playing to his strengths…crosses especially….he could be a massive handful for any side

  • 39 nightfa11 // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:53 PM

really impressed with our new signings.. especially our cheapest..mbemba.. considering hes only 35.. he can become of of the best defenders out there.. well done nufc..well done..everybody did well..from players to board..

  • 40 CypriotDelight // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:54 PM

Sorry to rant but that radical boiled my blood. Colo extremist shud be called CrIsis…..

  • 41 magscar // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:54 PM

1st full PL match seen ( apart from some drops on feed) and would have snapped your hand off for a draw before game.

Signs of drilling defence and wide players trying cut down on crosses working although Man U weren’t that good in air (without Fellaini anyway).

New players all looked to be worthwhile buys but not much yet from Thauvin on his short time on pitch and little if any training with team.

Lots of promising signs but way to go and Arsenal game should prove interesting in seeing whether we can keep good defensive shape but still muster some decent attacks.

Credit to whole team although there were some who did stand out as others have said. Not going to jump on Obertan bandwagon as he tried to carry out his instructions but I think as players get fitter he won’t have as much game time as he has had. McClaren made right calls in game and in initial selection.

Still a little worried about Colbeck and Anita partnership but am prepared to persevere as not sure how Tiote despite his obvious talent at breaking up play can add to a quick passing team that we seem to be trying for. Can coaching change his slow and sometimes wayward passing. Perhaps – if he simply wins ball and makes simple pass to a more talented midfield around him.

  • 42 toonbrother // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:56 PM

    @31 Mickalonius
folks like you make me chuckle

” continuing with your own personal vendetta with anyone disagreeing with you..”

    really? lol
I rarely respond to individual posters on this blog
I am probably the most tolerant poster with regard to views contrary to mine
On the contrary its people like you who cannot bear the truth and my fact-based arguments who often resort to childish abuse and unwarranted insults
    0 wins in 3this season
1 win in 13 if you count last season

why not stop obsessing over toonbrother for a second
and obsess instead over the club that looks no more likely to win a game this season than it did last season despite blowing £50 million in then transfer window?

A club in dire straits thanks to the joke we call our captain.

  • 43 toon kk // Aug 22, 2015 at 4:58 PM

I know most dis like Pardew, but with his own choice of players he’s built a quality quick side which will be very hard to beat.

  • 45 SPRINGY // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:02 PM

    toon kk
we were linked with most of the players he has now and tbh they are lookin good at the min…but i do wonder how long he can keep that team together tho?

  • 46 toon kk // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:04 PM

It was a great performance today, our downside is you never know which Newcastle will turn up on match day. Great one week the worst in the whole leagues the next. We need consistency.

  • 47 SPRINGY // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:07 PM

was referring to palace when i said how long could he keep the team together…..but was well impressed with the toons attitude and manner….performance is a step in the right direction

  • 48 SPRINGY // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:08 PM

i gave my team review on earlier pages

  • 49 CypriotDelight // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:13 PM

Toonbrother how on earth is Colo entirely to blame for this? Every player has there job within the team structure and if one breaks down it affects others. A team in dire straits due to one man? U r obsessed!

  • 50 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:18 PM

Other than the first 20 minutes and the last 10 it was a pretty solid display. And we nearly stole it at the end .

2 points from Southampton Swansea & Man U isn’t that bad really and we should improve .

Obertan should be nowhere near the first team IMO and playing with two holding midfielders that sit very deep kept leaving huge gaps in midfield and from now on I think we should drop one of them and Anita is the man in form at the moment .

From now on I would play :

    —Sissoko———-De Jong——–Thuavin—

  • 51 toonbrother // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:22 PM

    @49 CypriotDelight
Because our PRIMARY problem is our dreadful defence
OUR 3 WORST DEFENSIVE RECORDS IN 22 years of premier league football came last season, 2012/2013 season and 2007/08 season
During that time we’ve cycled through Santon, Beye, Bassong, Enrique, Taylor, Raylor, Perch, Simpson, Williamson, Mbiwa, Haidara, Ferguson, Dummet, Janmaat, Debuchy etc.

Please Ask yourself who has the constant in all of those teams?
    Here’s a hint
He’s The player who masks his horrific defensive flaws with (admittedly very good) possession play
The player who has pulled the wool over the eyes of fans with his champagne passses blinding them to the fact we concede cheap goals like Ayew’s last week ONLY when he plays

    Trust me
Get rid of colo and we’ll be a top 5 team guaranteed!!!

  • 52 JamesToon // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:23 PM

I personally think the team should be kept the same, only Thauvin should come in for Obertan against arsenal, SDJ, Sissoko and Janmaat should be slowly bedded into the team over the next few weeks

  • 53 JackButler // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:42 PM

Get rid of one player and we go from mid table to top five???

    And youre not a WUM!!!

  • 54 Malta Mag // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:44 PM

I’ve been one of those who criticized our captain of late but today both him and Taylor were immense. I don’t know whether that is all to do with their performance or the lack of quality up front from Man U. I’d like to think it was the former. All in all a great result and as Steve McLaren said, this is a case of “work in process”. Can’t quite see what these managers see in Obertan especially when you have Aarons on the bench? Our squad in general looks far better this year and hopefully we’ll get the final piece of the jigsaw this next week?

  • 55 JackButler // Aug 22, 2015 at 5:46 PM

    Toon KK

With so many changes over the summer, consistency will be something we could be chasing for a while. There are a lot of things to be put right, players need to settle, new methods and approach need time to be taken on board and we could go from world beaters one week to unless the next, it’s the price to pay for what we have failed to do for the past few years

  • 56 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 22, 2015 at 6:03 PM

We get a good result at a ground we are terrible at, the lads faught for the point today and it was good to see us defend as a team for a change to get a clean sheet. But people still have a good moan just because we have spent money and changed the whole coaching set up doesn’t mean we can change in an instant and just attack all game give it time and we will get there, Imo we have 2 points more than i thought we would have.

  • 57 benjohnsen // Aug 22, 2015 at 9:18 PM

@Toonbrother – Of the players you mentioned, only Coloccini has kept a high standard over several years. He has had a couple of bad seasons the last 3 years, however, so has the team as a whole.

Most of the other players you mention has not been found good enough for top flight football. Bassong went to Tottenham where he had one good season before falling out. Enrique has never been a success in Liverpool. Some of the others play in Championship. The only exception is Debuchy who went to Arsenal, however, himself was at fault for a lot of goals at Newcastle.

In 2012, Coloccini was named on the team of the year in Premier League, which only Shay Given (two times), Shearer and Dyer (one time each) has managed before him, since 2000 for Newcastle United.

I agree that Coloccini has become slow, but he is still very good at reading the game. You should also take into consideration the fact that Newcastle as a team lost its central line in Coloccini, Cabaye and Demba Ba. That central line has never been replaced and we never replaced Cabaye which always was a threat for the opposition. When you are no threat going forward, the other teams can throw everything they got at you. That makes it hard for any defender, because there is only so much you can do.

Hopefully, with the arrivals of some exciting new players, Newcastle can become a threat once more going forward and ease of some of the work for our defenders.

If you can see that football is a team sport, you will also understand that the defence is not one player’s fault, it is a consequence of team effort.
