Newcastle Close To Surprise Sixth Signing Of The Summer

3:04 pm, Sunday, August 23rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 141 Comments

The Sunday People is reporting today that Newcastle have had one bid rejected for 22 year-old Wolves and English Youth International striker Benik Afobe.

Benik was born in Leyton and has played 38 times for the England Youth sides and twice for the England U21 side and in those games he’s scored 23 goals, and he’s the type of player Newcastle like to sign, since he will only get better on Tyneside.

He was a member of the England squad who won the 2010 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in May of 2010.

Benik Afobe – Wolves 22 year-old striker

The People report by former Chronicle reporter Alan Oliver suggests that Newcastle will try to get the young striker through the door before the transfer window ends on September 1st.

And if Newcastle can get the former Arsenal youth player through the door, then we suppose Newcastle could let Papiss Cisse leave the club, since we will have Mitrovic, Perez, Afobe and Riviere as out-and-out strikers.

Afobe has done well at Wolves, and he’s scored 16 goals and had 5 assists in 25 appearances, since he joined the club in January from  Arsenal for a fee believed to be around £2M.

The youngster spent time while on Arsenal’s books on loan at Huddersfield, Bolton, Milwall, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons where he played a total of 129 appearances with 25 goals and 17 assists – so he can make goals as well as score them.

He has contract which has three years to run at Wolves and we assume Newcastle want to pay around £5M for the 22 year-old?

He looks a top young striker and he would be a good signing for us if we can get him through the door, and better value than Charlie Austin for £15M.

And we would also like a top defender brought in before 6pm on Tuesday September 1st when the transfer window slams shut.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    Can he defend ?

  • 2 sweendog // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:09 PM

Norwich had a 5 mill bid turned down so this lad doesn’t come cheap, still worth a try.

  • 3 TheToonKing // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:14 PM

    why ?

  • 4 Robby Bobson // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:19 PM

Really would be good to see of the list of things Alan Oliver says every week.

Old ex local journo who produces garbage every week as he is no longer relevant.

  • 5 IrishMagpie // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:23 PM

How does having a bid turned down and them saying he’s not for sale count as us being close to signing him? This place is getting pretty bad for click bait/misleading headlines.

  • 6 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:26 PM

“he’s the type of player Newcastle like to sign, since he will only get better on Tyneside.”

Really? Who is in that list? Perez, Aarons … ?

  • 7 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:26 PM

Why would we allow Cisse to leave when he’s the only proven striker at the club?

Mitrovic will come good as will Perez, Rivière needs to be shipped out either being sold or loaned for the season but taking Cisse out of our club is tantamount to footballing suicide

  • 8 Davies // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:33 PM

    There are other blogs, Irish.

  • 9 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:34 PM

Just watched afobe’s youtube vid and looks like a good finisher very calm and places most shots….ano it you tube and lower opposition and that doesn’t mean much.. so dont jump all over me…but looks like that part of his game is good imo

  • 10 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:35 PM

If we were to sign a prolific forward I would sell Cisse!

…if SM is going to play football the way think/hope we will, then I don’t see Cisse getting that many goals (as usual)

…he’ll probably miss half the games anyway (and what do we do if Mitro gets injured in the process?)

  • 11 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:37 PM

Jose needs help picking up his toys and putting them back in the pram if anyone wants to offer a hand

  • 12 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:38 PM

Was a terrific battling performance by us if we put that kind of effort into most games eventually once our flair players start to gel we will be very hard to beat and score some goals

As much as his driving runs are a good outlet for us not having Sissoko playing was probably a positive as he throws the towel in far too easily especially away from home , he does not follow runners and does not put a tackle in and does go missing when we are under the cosh

Was great to see Perez back getting a game he should be one of the first names on the teamsheet actually think he is better suited to a wide forward role so he can ghost into space

I think the worrying thing for me though is the lack of fitness we were dead on our feet in that 2nd half and were hanging on thats every game so far where the other team looks fitter for more portions of the game hope that will change once we have a few more games

  • 13 IrishMagpie // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:39 PM

I’d imagine I’ve been on this one a lot longer than you Davies and I’m simply commenting on the fact that the quality has dipped quite a bit.

Cisse’s best spell came when he played through the middle of a front three with HBA and Ba and with Perez and Thauvin either side of him he could get back to his very best, but if we are going to play with a lone striker it will not work as he’s not a hold up player, he thrives off balls played into space for him to run onto.

The back four is still up for debate but for me I’d go with

    Sissoko – Anita – Gini

    Thauvin – Cisse – Perez.

That gives us pace, power and would be hard for most teams to handle while also giving us good defensive cover

  • 17 the ledge // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:43 PM

Irish magpie what part of Ireland are you from

  • 18 the broons // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:48 PM

    Jack Butler

Nah, even though its just one game I love mitrovic already. He has to start either alongside cisse or instead of.

  • 19 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:51 PM

    the broons

    Based on what exactly?

He battled yesterday true, but with a front three Cisse is the perfect man right now as he’s proven before

  • 20 OneAlanShearer // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:52 PM

JB – when Wijnaldum joined it was said he didn’t want to play further back. He wants to be number 10.

  • 21 OneAlanShearer // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:54 PM

Mitrovic defends, tackles back, holds the ball up, can pass…slightly better first touch than cisse. He has to start in the league. Cisse is an impact player.

  • 22 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 3:55 PM

when we have the ball he pushes forward behind the striker to play that role

  • 23 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:03 PM

I think Gini is still getting his fitness levels up he does go missing in the 2nd half but I think its because he is totally done in by then as the puts in a lot of miles in a game

Got to remember we are probably about 3 weeks behind most teams in fitness levels due to the shambolic pre season schedule which must have been Carver who was partly responsible for it !! Imagine we had started the season with him in charge though ?!?

  • 24 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:07 PM

Gotta say it’s nice to a have a discussion as to who to play and who to leave out because we now have a bit of strength and depth to the squad rather than who is the best 11 from a bad bunch

  • 25 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:13 PM

If we stay with 4-2-3-1 i would like to see sissoko play the yaya role see how he gets on alongside anita/colback.

  • 26 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:16 PM

Could do well alongside Anita who I think has to play but I’d love to see Perez gain a starting place as the lad has everything we need

  • 27 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:20 PM

Man City loom scary right now

  • 28 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:21 PM

Would give us a bit of power in the middle, anita is starting to play well and can only get better. Perez is a great player and grafts his arse off.

    Sissoko anita
    Perez gini thauvin/aarons

  • 29 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:22 PM

Sissoko along side anita would be worth lookin at then perez could take wide right place sissoko has been playing then either thauvin or aaron down the left…worth a look…maybe in the cup against northampton?

  • 30 pspelectrical // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:23 PM

Ade Akinbiyi , anyone remember him, total replica, keep well away, GO AND SIGN AUSTIN FOR F@cks sake!!!!!!!!!

  • 31 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:24 PM

He is coming good now he’s being used in the right way, he’s a ball player but under Pardew he was bypassed the majority of the time.

Still need to see a lot more of Mitrovic before being sold on the lad, he did reasonably well yesterday seeings as we were penned in for the majority of the time

  • 32 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:25 PM

Anita and colback doesn’t have the right balance both to light and it would let sissoko run from deep and join the attack which anita and colback dont do.

  • 33 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:25 PM

Am studying how Yaya Toure can play deep and he is more of an attacking player. If only we can push Wijnaldum behind and we accomodate attacking players we have like Perez Thauvin De Jong Sissoko.

Anita or Colback playing kills one of those players.

  • 34 Thump // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:26 PM

    “The Sunday People”

Ah, Alan Oliver is desperate for views again.

  • 35 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:27 PM

Mitrovic is a beast and will cause cbs problems and can play that role, cisse is not a lone striker and cant do the hard graft thats needed hes an instinct striker he would be better alongside mitrovic but we will never play 2 upfront.

  • 36 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:28 PM

Coldback is a grafter but Anita is technically the far better player and playing Sissoko in that deeper role does allow us a more fluid and faster paced attack and if Thauvin put in the same amount of work as Perez we will look very good

  • 37 Mr Funk // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:28 PM

I think McClaren values experience – that is probably why he kept Colo and has used Obertan.

Hopefully, he will start to use the players that have potential like aarons.

I also think future purchases will be for players that have potential rather than anyone with EPL experience.

Therefore, if we do sign anyone else it will probably be a youngish player (20-23) that has played a highish number of games in a different league to the EPL

So if you look at defensive options – players like Dunk, Matip, Knoche, Kongolo are more likely to be transfer choice rather then Abdennour

The same will apply for attacking position.

  • 38 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:28 PM

Sissoko is poor defensively can never push him back. Its Wijnaldum to push there.

I cant believe we no longer talk abt DE Jong

  • 39 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:29 PM

Always wanted someone strong/big in the anita/colback position good drafters the pair of them just a bit light only thing I’d worry about is sissoko for a big bloke is a bit soft needs to toughen then he’d be ideal in the position

  • 40 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:29 PM

I keep thinking back to how Cisse played with HBA and Ba either side of him and he could be the same again with Thauvin and Perez

  • 41 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:30 PM

    Will die

We don’t mention de Jong as he’s never available, the lad still has everything to prove in a black and white shirt, like staying fit for one

  • 42 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:32 PM

    Mr. Funk

Best post so far big up.

Mcca came to coach and develop players and build a squad so we will keep the experience for the young lads

  • 43 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:34 PM

Sissoko should get a chance to play there he has earned it from the graft he puts in, it will take time for him in that position to adapt but its worth a shot hes a powerhouse.

We don’t talk about de jong because he gets injured thinking what day it is.

  • 44 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:35 PM

De jong is to fragile atm to be back there tackling and grafting….needs games and confidence but the run of games we have at present unless someone gets injured hes not goin to get the playing time unfortunately. ..which is a shame coz he seems like a clever player who can see a pass and run

  • 45 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:36 PM

He was great in that front 3 but i think hes lost a bit since then

  • 46 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:37 PM

If only Wijnaldum can play in deeper role in the way Yaya Toure is playing with either Colback or Anita or Tiote by his side. He comes to the box unaware. it cam work for him

  • 47 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:38 PM

Think it’s only his confidence as Pardew played him on the wing and as a lone striker which he is not, give the lad the right support and he score plenty

  • 48 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:39 PM

Gini wants to play higher up unless you play 4-1-4-1

    Perez sissoko gini thauvin/arrons

  • 49 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:41 PM

You supply him and he will score but he cant play in this system, if we went 4-4-2 i would like to see mitrovic and perez up top

  • 50 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:41 PM

If sissoko and tiote were at there best that would b worth a look but anita would get my nod ahead of colback…colbacks passing not to good at the minute but cant knock his graft and attitude the amount of blocks and tackles hes done lately but goin forward you need passers and technique….but its good we can argue over plays where I suppose!lol

  • 51 Mr Funk // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:41 PM

    @ will die

Thanks for the the big up.

McClaren is trying to build a team and hopefully they will develop together. For this to happen this means that key players cannot be sold.

If fringe players are sold, i think we could see some transfer movement.

  • 52 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:42 PM

Haha finally a team that does not pick itself whats going on

  • 53 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:43 PM

I know mate, earlier on I said I’d love to see us going to 4-3-3 as it would suit us better than persisting with 4-2-3-1

  • 54 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:44 PM

Gini wasn’t frightened at all yesterday to take the ball with someone at his back and surrounded by players and strong enough to them off turn and run with it so he could maybe do a good job in there….confident player and nice to see tbh

  • 55 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:45 PM

SM has already said the need to keep the likes of Sissoko in the squad so I can’t see any of the experienced players leaving unless they don’t fit into what he wants to do, I do think we will see more fringe players leave though

  • 56 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:47 PM

They only thing is everyone is playing 4-2-3-1 now, if you go 4-3-3 your left and right winger have to a lot of graft we know perez can do it and maybe aarons but can thauvin??

  • 57 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:48 PM

I think they r many things that dont favour Sissoko in the deeper.
    1. He does have a killer pass in him
    2. No sense to come in the box
    3. A shot.
    4. He cant defend.

Sissoko is jst an ignition to our attack move that ball from defence to attack. A Counter attacker.

  • 58 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:48 PM

    Anita gini
    Thauvin perez aarons

  • 59 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:50 PM

The thing with that formation is that it reverts to a 4-5-1 when we don’t have possession. Time will tell if Thauvin has that work rate, I hope so as he really needs to have it.

Nice to have so many options for once though 🙂

  • 60 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:52 PM

    Technically good side

  • 61 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:53 PM

  • 62 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:55 PM

    East stand

    Plan B???

    What that then?

Don’t think the younger members of the blog will remember us ever having a plan B

  • 63 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:55 PM

I think after yesterday you cant change the back 4, gini and perez must start next week, time for aarons to show what he has on tue along with thauvin best one takes obertans spot.

  • 64 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 4:56 PM

I get what ya sayin about sissokoin the holdin role but if macca could develope those skills that would mean u could get another talent on the field in his old position and maintain his threat…but like I said just ideas and nice to b able to talk about it have difference of opinion may not work but if it could work would give us any amount of options al over the pitch….your team for northampton?

  • 68 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 5:07 PM

    Team for tue

    Janmaat taylor lascelles ??
    Tiote sissoko
    Thauvin perez aarons

Good chance for sissoko to play in that role

Thinking about the game yesterday, we did get totally overrun in midfield, Colback n Anita worked their socks off, but they have a lack of presence and creativity, we do get ran through a bit to much for me, and while I did not give Sissoko a second thought we prob missed him, ps, Perez put in a mighty shift.

  • 71 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 5:18 PM

id have mbemba playing with colo to start just to get used to playing and i thing mitro needs games for sharpness but then cisse needs it as well tbh…but would worth a look if sissoko cant do it against northampton he never i said worth a look…cant see him bein involved think they’ll keep him arsenal

  • 72 the broons // Aug 23, 2015 at 5:19 PM

Team for Northampton in my opinon:
    GK- Darlow
    RB- Janmaat
    CB- Taylor
    CB- Lascelles
    LB- Dummet (if fit)
    DM- Tiote
    DM- Kemen

    1. The Back 5 got me a clean sheet.
    2. Colback over Anita for his cornerz and engine
    3. Perez thats his best position
    4. Sissoko the ignition to our attack.
    5. Wijnaldum has shown he can win the ball I wld push him back.

Nasri comes on not to finish the game to also b involved and make a contribution.

You cant sell and rebuild it becomes a tiresome job for the Gaffer. Look at Spurs Liverpool Everton and Southampton. I jst hope we have the resistance to get hold on our players.

But players are whoes never strong to their word.
    1. When you not going to Champions league, they say they wang to play champions league. (Sissoko, Enrique, Debuchy)
    2. When play Champions league and not trophies, I want to win a trophy. (Sterling, Barry, Delph)
    3. When you win trophies, then paycheck aint enough. (Yaya toure, Pogba, Makelele)
    4. Wen the pay check is good, then I want to adventure to play in another league I have failed to settle. (De Maria, Tevez, Ibrahimovic)

    Players jst hard to understand.

JB…I would prefer a 4-3-3 more direct (total Football meets tiki taka) brand of football where we play at the deck but where we are more direct in the final third of the field.

I was actually let to believe that’s how SM liked to play football…but it looks more and more like Pardew each game.

    Oh well

  • 101 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:14 PM

    will die
a lot of players are not as good as there agents are telling them they are….and a lot will rather sit on a bench and watch there team mates play a champion league game and say they were part of the team that won then stick with a team with an outside chance of cup that would mean a hell of a lot more to that club and fans and make them legends at the lower club…instead of name on a team sheet at a bigger club….just the way they are unfortunately

  • 102 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:16 PM

    and the reason is money

  • 103 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:16 PM

I was never worried defensively coz defence is abt Organisation and Mcca can really organise a team.

Its attack that scares me its more individual brilliance our players have failed so far 2 goals in 3 games not convincing. Our best bet shld b counter attack or Corners/freekicks with Mitrovic in the team.

    “Tsunki // Aug 21, 2015 at 6:37 PM
If Thauvin does play tomorrow, and almost inevitably underwhelms in what is bound to be a tough game to make a mark,
I wonder what the consensus will be tomorrow night about our new signing. Or signings.”

And the winner of this weeks whingingwanka trophy is ?

  • 105 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:18 PM

our corners and free kicks have been woeful for a good few years and didnt look to much better yesterday…needs serious work

Imho our corners and free kicks are aimed at certain people, obviously something they do in training.
They would be better off aiming for an area for people to attack. Most teams have sussed our “aim to player”tactics.
Its also imo why alot of our kicks hit the first man as we dont have people just practise hitting an area.

  • 108 jane // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:31 PM

“We’ve stayed out of the bottom 3 !!!!!!!”

till next week when we might be bottom!

  • 109 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:33 PM

    toon 22
needs sortin ..coz its a big part of the modern game and it needs to change

  • 110 Jib // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:40 PM

Two cracking interviews on NUFCtv with Big Tim and Mitro – The Serb speaks good english and has a headpiece on him , he’s no dummy, the fans already have a song for him and he’s honoured. 🙂

A win against Northampton should set us up nicely for Arsenal.

    HWTL !!!!

  • 111 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:42 PM

I still think we should drop one of our DM’s as yesterday there were huge gaps in the middle of the pitch as Anita & Colback were sitting far too deep .

For me Anita is the man in form so Colback should be dropped, and Tiote needs to prove his worth before walking in to the team IMO .

At one point against Man U we played a 4-1-4-1 and we have seen Mitrovic’s aerial presence so more width would be ideal IMO :

    —Sissoko—–Wijnaldum——–De Jong——Thuavin–

Also I still think De Jong should be in the team as we miss someone with Cabaye’s vision and that can chip in with a few goals, and for me Siem is that man . I think against the big teams we could then revert back to two CDM’s .

On another note how good is David Silva ? . Favourite PL player by a mile .

  • 112 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:48 PM

hopefully de jong gets a full 90 mins against north to get some game time… i hope like you to see him play that clever style…a fit confident de jong will be good to see

  • 113 Jib // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:49 PM

I’m watching Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona.
Sometimes you just gasp at Barca’s passing it seems almost telepathic ( or telepathetic as me Auntie Florrie used to say ha ha ha )

  • 114 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:52 PM

they seem so cool and comfortable on the ball and willing to accept it even surrounded by the opposition….was nice to see gini do that in spells yesterday

  • 115 GeordieTwo // Aug 23, 2015 at 6:57 PM

Some good performances yesterday. Colo was excellent (but can he be consistent at his age?). Perez was very good as well and Krul made a couple of fine saves. The back 4 held up well. No sign of panic. Not much going forward. We turned the ball over time and time again. But there is signs of a decent side in there.

  • 116 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:00 PM

    agree with you there….fighting together

  • 117 GeordieTwo // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:01 PM

Yes it looks promising springy mate. It will take some time and we’ll be down near the bottom for a bit but eventually the wins should start coming.

  • 118 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:02 PM

was impressed with mitro not just for way he played and worked but for keeping his head and not looking like a lunatic!lol

  • 119 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:06 PM

nar its not ganna happen over nyt but small signs every week and hard work it’ll….more confident then before the west ham last season thats a certainty!!lol

  • 120 GeordieTwo // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:06 PM

An interesting character that Mitro. Big and powerful. Definitely gets stuck in. Should be a handful for most Prem defenses springy. I’m interested to see how Thauvin turns out for us as well. Obertan looked more like his normal hopeless case against ManU. Surely his playing time will be lessened.

  • 121 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:06 PM

    it’ll come#

  • 122 GeordieTwo // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:09 PM

Spot on springy. Nice chatting with you.

  • 123 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:11 PM

we need good crossing and mitro will cause problems….thauvin hopefully can supply them and lookin forward to seeing him play….obertan…??…pre-season looked better then ive seen out of him but really think he’s only there till better comes along tbh

  • 124 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:12 PM

    later mate…im off

  • 125 Novocastrian66 // Aug 23, 2015 at 7:19 PM

I thought Taylor set the tone for the rest of the team yesterday, with some great blocks and intercepting crosses in the first 20 mins. Yes Colo grew into the game but Taylor was at it from the off.

  • 126 Rotonda heights // Aug 23, 2015 at 8:04 PM

If Obi is on his way out then hopefully more playing time for perez and aarons

  • 127 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 23, 2015 at 8:27 PM

Also dont think Mclaren should sit in the stands in the first half thats 3 games where its not worked and he has had to come down before half time to sort it out !!

It sounds like our players need constant instructions shouted out from the touchline which probably says something about the fact that we have not real vocal players on the pitch to get people organised

  • 128 toon22 // Aug 23, 2015 at 8:36 PM

Why cant they install some kind of camera to show SMC the view from the touchline.
Yes it sounds stupid but if he needs to be in two places somethings go to give, its no different to the argument about vid refs.
Any advantage surley should be tryed.

  • 129 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:15 PM

    Same old nonsense.

  • 130 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:22 PM

If the horse has been bolted to the cart, how about fixing the cart’s axles, Mike? No wins in three.

  • 131 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:24 PM

Looking at the whole Abdennour situation it seems he is about the same height as Colo is he not? Not really a towering centre half is he ? Watching Everton versus City today was like land of the giants compared to our team each of them had well built pacy players all over the pitch especially at the back

Also would like to see us get a defensive midfielder possibly on loan Mikel or Lucas would work a treat

I would actually like to see us go for that Danish defender who is 6ft 6 that would make a difference in both penalty boxes !

Whats the betting that tart Giroud scores against us with a header next week?

  • 132 toon22 // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:30 PM

Agree hes short and has a worse injury record than De Jong.

    Not worth it.

  • 133 toon22 // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:31 PM

Maybe a cheeky bid for John Terry might be worth a punt.

  • 134 the broons // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Yeah that was playing on my mind but I also feel that with the quality around him especially de jong, that will be more than enough to brush past northampton.

However leaving him on the bench and giving perez the striker role may not be the worst idea as he should be given a chance to see what he can do upfront too.

  • 135 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Abdennour is 6″4 and Colo is 6″0.
    Taylor 6″1..
    Willo 6″4
    Lascrles 6″3
    Mbemba 5″11

  • 136 jane // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:33 PM

“how about fixing the cart’s axles”

    maybe they just need oiling

  • 137 jane // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:35 PM

“a cheeky bid for John Terry”

    an insulting low one

  • 138 Alems1983 // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:47 PM

This is the team that is best for us.

  • 139 IrishMagpie // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:56 PM

Aarons is still a kid, I wouldn’t like to see too much pressure/responsibility put on him yet. I don’t think he warrants a place in our strongest team just yet either.

  • 140 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:09 PM

At least we aren’t doing Pardew’s float it up for Willo.

    Every. Bloody. Time.

    For 4 years.

  • 141 derekm // Aug 24, 2015 at 1:40 PM

bearing in mind the limitations of our previous managers did anyone note how we were being played off the park for the first fifteen minutes on saturday, McClaren came down from the stands, changed things around and from then on the Mancs effectively ground to a halt at the edge of our box? To outfox Van Gaal for me shows for once we have a manager who really understands the game!
