Newcastle Close To Surprise Sixth Signing Of The Summer

The Sunday People is reporting today that Newcastle have had one bid rejected for 22 year-old Wolves and English Youth International striker Benik Afobe.

Benik was born in Leyton and has played 38 times for the England Youth sides and twice for the England U21 side and in those games he’s scored 23 goals, and he’s the type of player Newcastle like to sign, since he will only get better on Tyneside.

He was a member of the England squad who won the 2010 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in May of 2010.

Benik Afobe – Wolves 22 year-old striker

The People report by former Chronicle reporter Alan Oliver suggests that Newcastle will try to get the young striker through the door before the transfer window ends on September 1st.

And if Newcastle can get the former Arsenal youth player through the door, then we suppose Newcastle could let Papiss Cisse leave the club, since we will have Mitrovic, Perez, Afobe and Riviere as out-and-out strikers.

Afobe has done well at Wolves, and he’s scored 16 goals and had 5 assists in 25 appearances, since he joined the club in January from  Arsenal for a fee believed to be around £2M.

The youngster spent time while on Arsenal’s books on loan at Huddersfield, Bolton, Milwall, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons where he played a total of 129 appearances with 25 goals and 17 assists – so he can make goals as well as score them.

He has contract which has three years to run at Wolves and we assume Newcastle want to pay around £5M for the 22 year-old?

He looks a top young striker and he would be a good signing for us if we can get him through the door, and better value than Charlie Austin for £15M.

And we would also like a top defender brought in before 6pm on Tuesday September 1st when the transfer window slams shut.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Norwich had a 5 mill bid turned down so this lad doesn’t come cheap, still worth a try.

Really would be good to see of the list of things Alan Oliver says every week.

Old ex local journo who produces garbage every week as he is no longer relevant.

How does having a bid turned down and them saying he’s not for sale count as us being close to signing him? This place is getting pretty bad for click bait/misleading headlines.

Why would we allow Cisse to leave when he’s the only proven striker at the club?

Mitrovic will come good as will Perez, Rivière needs to be shipped out either being sold or loaned for the season but taking Cisse out of our club is tantamount to footballing suicide

Just watched afobe’s youtube vid and looks like a good finisher very calm and places most shots….ano it you tube and lower opposition and that doesn’t mean much.. so dont jump all over me…but looks like that part of his game is good imo

If we were to sign a prolific forward I would sell Cisse!

…if SM is going to play football the way think/hope we will, then I don’t see Cisse getting that many goals (as usual)

…he’ll probably miss half the games anyway (and what do we do if Mitro gets injured in the process?)

Was a terrific battling performance by us if we put that kind of effort into most games eventually once our flair players start to gel we will be very hard to beat and score some goals

As much as his driving runs are a good outlet for us not having Sissoko playing was probably a positive as he throws the towel in far too easily especially away from home , he does not follow runners and does not put a tackle in and does go missing when we are under the cosh

Was great to see Perez back getting a game he should be one of the first names on the teamsheet actually think he is better suited to a wide forward role so he can ghost into space

I think the worrying thing for me though is the lack of fitness we were dead on our feet in that 2nd half and were hanging on thats every game so far where the other team looks fitter for more portions of the game hope that will change once we have a few more games

I’d imagine I’ve been on this one a lot longer than you Davies and I’m simply commenting on the fact that the quality has dipped quite a bit.

    Jesper

Cisse’s best spell came when he played through the middle of a front three with HBA and Ba and with Perez and Thauvin either side of him he could get back to his very best, but if we are going to play with a lone striker it will not work as he’s not a hold up player, he thrives off balls played into space for him to run onto.

The back four is still up for debate but for me I’d go with

    Sissoko – Anita – Gini

    Thauvin – Cisse – Perez.

That gives us pace, power and would be hard for most teams to handle while also giving us good defensive cover

    Based on what exactly?

He battled yesterday true, but with a front three Cisse is the perfect man right now as he’s proven before

Mitrovic defends, tackles back, holds the ball up, can pass…slightly better first touch than cisse. He has to start in the league. Cisse is an impact player.

I think Gini is still getting his fitness levels up he does go missing in the 2nd half but I think its because he is totally done in by then as the puts in a lot of miles in a game

Got to remember we are probably about 3 weeks behind most teams in fitness levels due to the shambolic pre season schedule which must have been Carver who was partly responsible for it !! Imagine we had started the season with him in charge though ?!?

Would give us a bit of power in the middle, anita is starting to play well and can only get better. Perez is a great player and grafts his arse off.

    Sissoko anita
    Perez gini thauvin/aarons
    Mitro

He is coming good now he’s being used in the right way, he’s a ball player but under Pardew he was bypassed the majority of the time.

Still need to see a lot more of Mitrovic before being sold on the lad, he did reasonably well yesterday seeings as we were penned in for the majority of the time

Anita and colback doesn’t have the right balance both to light and it would let sissoko run from deep and join the attack which anita and colback dont do.

Am studying how Yaya Toure can play deep and he is more of an attacking player. If only we can push Wijnaldum behind and we accomodate attacking players we have like Perez Thauvin De Jong Sissoko.

Anita or Colback playing kills one of those players.

Mitrovic is a beast and will cause cbs problems and can play that role, cisse is not a lone striker and cant do the hard graft thats needed hes an instinct striker he would be better alongside mitrovic but we will never play 2 upfront.

Coldback is a grafter but Anita is technically the far better player and playing Sissoko in that deeper role does allow us a more fluid and faster paced attack and if Thauvin put in the same amount of work as Perez we will look very good

I think McClaren values experience – that is probably why he kept Colo and has used Obertan.

Hopefully, he will start to use the players that have potential like aarons.

I also think future purchases will be for players that have potential rather than anyone with EPL experience.

Therefore, if we do sign anyone else it will probably be a youngish player (20-23) that has played a highish number of games in a different league to the EPL

So if you look at defensive options – players like Dunk, Matip, Knoche, Kongolo are more likely to be transfer choice rather then Abdennour

The same will apply for attacking position.

Sissoko is poor defensively can never push him back. Its Wijnaldum to push there.

Always wanted someone strong/big in the anita/colback position good drafters the pair of them just a bit light only thing I’d worry about is sissoko for a big bloke is a bit soft needs to toughen then he’d be ideal in the position

I keep thinking back to how Cisse played with HBA and Ba either side of him and he could be the same again with Thauvin and Perez
