Will Newcastle sign one more top player this summer is the question on most fans’ minds at the moment, and most feel that we still need defensive cover so that our weakness of the last three season is fixed once and for all.
Yesterday’s defensive performance from Newcastle was little short of brilliant, but we still hope that the club can bring in one more top defender before September rolls around – be it a top center-back or a top full back.
Aymen Abdennour – would be excellent signing for Newcastle
The player we are supposed to be after is Monaco center-back Aymen Abdennour, and there was news early in the week that Newcastle were interested in signing him once we brought in Florian Thauvin.
And there was news on Friday that he would definitely be leaving Monaco this summer, it was just a question of which club he would join.
But then at Steve McClaren’s press conference on Friday, he seems to indicate all the signings may have already been done this summer, but he also left the door open.
There’s still a possibility we will go in for QPR striker Charlie Austin, but he’s looking more expensive when you consider how well both strikers Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez played yesterday.
Both worked their socks off for the team, and both were subbed in the second half, and in particular the Serbian looked exhausted when Cisse came on for him with just a couple of minutes to go, after the 20 year-old had suffered some cramp.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – delighted
The Serbian International seems to have been born to play for Newcastle, and the photo above at the end of the game showed just how delighted he was at the result.
He was excellent and had a great header that smashed across the cross-bar, and worked so very hard for the team showing real discipline too.
Both of these lads must play lots of games for us this season, and we were reminded of what a good player Perez is becoming.
So it’s not clear to us that striker us the priority, as long as we don’t go daft and sell Papiss Cisse.
An injured Papiss Cisse showed last season that even as a late sub in games he can still score goals and he almost scored the winner for us is stoppage time yesterday.
Even if Papiss doesn’t start for the team he can still do a job for us this season, and he wants to stay.
Another top defender is what we need, and we’ll just have to wait until 6pm on Tuesday, September 1st, , because it could still happen.
We would be in excellent shape for the season if we can get 26 year-old Aymen Abdennour through the door.
What do you think?

Comment #1Aarons can play left or right i think. Perez really nailed that yesterday if we continue to use the formation which it looks like we will. I am worried we will lose Aarons as he is some talent and needs to be playing regualr football.

Comment #2I am wondering if aarons is stalling on signing a contract and not being played for that reason. There was talk of him signing then he hasn’t played since. If he is stalling I’d absolutely not play him. Just a guess but it makes sense to me.

Comment #5I think SM is going to bring Aarons along slowly to protect him as he’s had a few injury problems with hamstrings etc. Rotation and competition is what keeps players fresh & on their toes, they’ll all have game time I should imagine.

Comment #6Aarons would have been the perfect replacement for Mitro yesterday, his extra pace at the end would have been perfect. Instead Cisse comes on and when we caught United on the break he once again has the worst first touch possible and ruins it with a poorer shot.

Comment #7Quick thought regarding Aarons, I wonder if mckaren has looked at first set of fixtures and thought no way, his stock and confidence may diminish against the bigger boys, so use overran who is a natural scapegoated piece of turd. Then unleash Rolando for the exciting expected to win matches?

Nah
Obertan was in the shop window
It has worked , St.Etienne and Nantes have enquired about him , let him go for peanuts and get his wages off the bill , his contract runs out in 10 months.

Comment #9Lets not get to excited, it was a great defensive display but Man u totally dictated the whole game, we only had 30% of the possession. Did we have a shot on target?
A team with a bit more pace would have ripped us apart.
There’s a long way to go, survival this season will be classed as a successful season.

Comment #10Maybe McLaren doesn’t want Aarons in the shop window until the transfer window closes.
The team selection for the Northampton game could be revealing

Comment #12Goals win games not possession.. man utd scored none so great performance by toon.. 1 great save… apart from that we had two better chances… tbh.. cisse shouldve done better… gini shouldve played it infront of thourvin.. if cisse ran wider it’d made a bigger gap.. hey.. a great point gained tho

Williamson – £1-2m
Obertan – £1m
Tiote – £4m
Cisse – £5m
Gouffran – £2m
= £14m
***Buy***
£12.5m for Austin
£14m for abdennour
£8m for willems
£65m spent altogether in this window and it’s a perfect transfer window, our team would be complete!
