There Was Only One Man Of The Match Yesterday

9:35 am, Sunday, August 23rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 211 Comments

Fabricio Coloccini showed yesterday that he can still be a top center-back in the Premier League, and he used all his vast experience, skill and guile to keep out Manchester United as the Argentine International played a fabulous game at the back for Newcastle – a real captain’s game by a player who leads by example

tim krul and fab coloccini at end of game

This is what it meant to Coloccini at the end of the game

He was the best player on the field at Old Trafford, and he was helped by some other excellent performances from other Newcastle players, such as Tim Krul, Steven Taylor, Chancel Mbemba and Aleksandar Mitrovic to name only four.

One thing to remember was that it was a great Newcastle performance and we didn’t have players like Moussa Sissoko, Siem de Jong or Rolando Aarons playing yesterday,

So we are starting to have some strength in depth, and competition for places, which is what we need to be successful this season.

Colo won the Man of the Match rather easily with 47% of the total vote, followed by Tim Krul who gave a good display of  goalkeeping in front of his former Dutch National manager.

Tim could even get a start for Holland in their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers under new head coach Danny Blind.

Here are the poll results, and there’s still time to vote if you haven’t already done so.

Collocini man of the match lol
He probably was but only because man ure didn’t play a cossing game
Most team will play a big striker against us ,we were lucky yesterday to be up against a team not that good up front
We’ve been played off the park 2 games running ,the squad still needs strengthening
Obertan first choice wtf is that about!

With colocinni in the mix, defeat is a strong possibiity, lack of a clean sheet is a certainty

If you didn’t see the game son – keep your mouth shut , there’s a good little boy.

  • 6 JDdubai // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:51 AM

MOM doesnt take into account what tactics the teams used, it is just who was the best player in that match.

Colo is a fair choice so dont see the need of your point, am sure in other games he wont get MOM but we are very quick to slate him for his bad games, you should at least praise him where deserved as well.

And of course Colo will struggle in the air when we come up against a Pelle/Lukaku etc – they are 4 inches taller and much stronger, the re is only so much you can do – thats why Saylor needs to play these games and Mbemba RB is a good call too.

Id keep the same starting 11 vs Arsenal with only Aarons or Thauvin in for Obertan – think Janmaat should get benched for his stupidity and poor start to the season – hopefully it will shake him into life.

  • 7 hibbit // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:52 AM

lets be honest most teams going to man u would happy to come away with a point most people on here had us down for a good beating including myself

  • 8 Tsunki // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:53 AM

Dennis! You’ll probably get a good few chances to do that pre match rally on yesterday’s showing

I thought Colo played well but my MoM was Mbemba. Only the third game in a slipshod back four and out of position, but against manure ( ok they are a shadow of their former glory) showed some real presence and got about his job with enthusiasm and style.

  • 9 welshgeordie9 // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:53 AM

So we have played 3 games so far, 3 tough fixtures, played well in the 2 of them, and yet people are still moaning.

  • 10 cole the goal // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:54 AM

    Mickalfas must be a mackem

    Or a 6 year old

    Or maybe just retarded

  • 11 welshgeordie9 // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:55 AM

Regarding our new signings so far so good. In fact I’ve been really impressed.

  • 12 Tsunki // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:56 AM

Gaz44 mitrovic and Perez for me get highly honourable mentions, Perez again for adapting to a role and mucking in with excellent break up play. Mitrovic at his age astounding to be such a force up front and took much of the impetus out of the manure back line coming forward. An inch away from a famous goal.

  • 13 cole the goal // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:57 AM

    Taylor my MOM

    blocked everything

  • 14 Tsunki // Aug 23, 2015 at 9:58 AM

Not all of what mickalfas said can be glossed over though. Can’t let yesterday’s result fool us into complacency. This is not a finished product. It still needs sanding down and a good coat of paint 🙂

  • 15 Tsunki // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:00 AM

Ctg- Taylor has been reduced to being dismissed as a lower league buffoon while out. The criticism descended into the unrealistic. He’s still a very good cb on his day, miles better than willo, who I hope never sets foot on a pitch for us again. No offence, mike, but so long, and thanks for all the twirling and skyward punts.

  • 16 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:00 AM

Wasn’t a lot between the back 4 to be honest. In fact the bits i have seen, MOST of the team had an excellent, backs to the wall performance. We wont be the only team to park the bus at old trafford this season, and as yet the team was not ready to play it any other way. Colo gets MoM from me because we have been screaming for a captains performance from him, and we got that, and more, yesterday.

  • 17 mickalfas // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:01 AM

Wasn’t slating Collo, imo the defence should have been improved during the window ,a big powerful CB
I’m just not that impressed with us being played off the park ,great result that it was
We still can’t defend crosses imo, that still needs addressing

  • 18 Tsunki // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:01 AM

Wijnaldum btw looked a class above anyone in manures midfield though. He was probably the difference between halves as manure came forward more readily when he went off.

  • 19 cole the goal // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:02 AM

I don’t think there is any chance of complacency, everyone knows anyone can beat anyone in EPL. Best players from all over the world. Let us enjoy the result and take each game as it comes

  • 20 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:04 AM

We defended as a team yesterday when was the last time we done that its a huge positive from the game and will give the lads a big boost for the next game, new lads have totally changed us and mitro is going to cause proplems for defenders just need pace next to him.

Still cant believe people are whinging about the game you need to take your expectations down a few notches and join the real world.

  • 21 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:04 AM

Can’t really argue with Colo as MOM, but I did give my vote to Perez. Surely he should start every game? That lad is a real proper player. But fair play to Colo and Taylor who I have slagged off as much as anyone has. They showed real true grit. It’s bloody hard to go there to play for a point and then get it, despite what the miserable MU fans are saying.

  • 22 Tsunki // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:05 AM

I hope they left obertan in Manchester. You’d have thought he would have put a game on against his old team.

  • 23 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:05 AM

While I agree Stayls can turn in a quality performance (yesterday), he also turns in some nightmares. He is occasionally, the chest thumping, fist pumping bufoon at times. If he could minimise that type of game, and play like he did yesterday more often, i probably wouldn’t cringe as much when his name appears on the team sheet.

  • 24 toon kk // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:05 AM

Tbh I thought Man u would give us a good thumping and they did as far as possession went, but we worked hard as a defensive unit.
    We kept a clean sheet.
But don’t get over excited a team with more pace will turn us back into headless chickens.

  • 25 lochinvar // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:07 AM

There was an excellent illustration today at Old Trafford in the second half when Belgian International winger Adnan Januzaj went around Mbemba, but then he just flung himself to the floor looking for a foul – he should have been booked for that – why wasn’t he?

Don’t think we should be too harsh on him as he probably just slipped where Jonny Evans had been practising his spitting…

  • 26 headtheball // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:13 AM

I thought it was protocol to wait until the game was finished before swopping shirts. Smalling was trying to remove the shirt of any NUFC player entering the Manure penalty area. Never even got spoken to let alone a yellow card. BLOODY MANURE

  • 30 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:21 AM

So what are we meant to say about Obertan? If you are such an expert compared to us, how do you explain his utterly dire performances during his time at nufc?

…plus injuries always hit. Haidara will miss games for sure!

  • 38 Sliema // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:27 AM

We were pulling their shirts all game too tbh, Smalling’s late header that hit the post, look again at Colo hanging on to his shirt for dear life… its not only happen g when it is noticed mate, it happens all the time in the premier league, you give some you get some.

  • 39 geordieboy83 // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:27 AM

Overran is a shocking player. I’m quick and would be dangerous occasionally with my pace doesn’t make me a professional standard player. He can’t cross, run with the ball, defend, head, jump. One foot in front of the other is a remarkable achievement for the turf.

This talk of teams with lace will kill us, depay, Rooney, januzaj, shaw, darmian, mata aren’t exactly slow

  • 42 Jib // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:31 AM

The way Mbemba played against Memphis DePay (once Colback and Anita sorted themselves out) makes you wish he’d been right back against Montero , we may have got something from the Swans game.
Chancel has really shown up Janmaat’s limitations.

  • 44 bills-son // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:33 AM

We’ve had new players starting the first three games, new management and coaches, a new system of play – and a very tough opening three games with Arsenal up next.

We’ve played well in two and were well back into the game at Swansea until Jamnaat got sent off.

As McClaren has said, he is still learning about the players and they are still learning about each other and his system.

IMO the signs so far are good – we’ll know far more after 12 games and criticism or praise from pundits and fans will be for more relevant then.

  • 45 headtheball // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:37 AM

I agree that we were tugging shirts but Smalling is a serial shirt puller and when he is not pulling he puts either one arm or both on a strikers shoulder/s in order to gain more height. If I could see it, why not the ref and at least have a word. Willo does it a lot and has been penalised for it. To me it spoils the game and is my pet hate.

  • 46 Lindisfarne // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:37 AM

    Is McClaren, Pardew in disguise?

Despite the new coaching team showing improvement on the past, I am finding that the same decision making problems still exist for the new Head Coach. With the same formation and tactics being generally deployed, as 4231 and counter attacking seem to be still the most effective and the same issues regarding selection for the forth coming League Cup match.

There are plenty of people that do not shift from the opinion that the best team should always be fielded, despite the risk of injury and exhaustion. Where as if a lot of squad players are used there may be a drop in performance due to a lack of cohesion and the immediate accusation that the Club are not taking the Cups seriously. There is also the added problem that the players will think the game as a training game and not be as switched on like in the off season.

Personally I would like to see the squad being used as much as possible and I think McClaren has the experience to choose the players selected for each individual game independently and have the squad able to adapt through his coaching. Sissoko is supposedly injured and maybe on ice until the end of the transfer window, Aaarons contract will be an issue along with making him cup tied and Tiote definitely needs games to get him back to match sharpness.

Northampton are an average League Two outfit that will struggle to make any impression, unless given the opportunity and judging by the following interview quickly become disheartened.

    My selection:

    de Jong—Tiote—Bigi

Darlow for Krul – when game secured
Marveaux / Obertron for Thauvin / Goof – shop window
Colback / Anita / Gini for de Jong / Tiote / Bigi – when tired

  • 47 Bobbybee // Aug 23, 2015 at 10:42 AM

Here’s a thing. You don’t have to like or trust Ashley in order to support Newcastle. There’s still an underlying tone in some posts that refuse to give credit where it’s due. We went to OT to play an extremely expensively assembled side and kept a clean sheet. Despite 70% of possession, they didn’t threaten the goal that much and when they did, Krul was up to the task. A clean sheet with a seriously maligned defence wasn’t too shoddy either. How many other sides around our level will do what we did yesterday? We got a good point few expected and regardless of anything, the team did their job well. No, it wasn’t perfect, but there was no lack of commitment and that alone deserves great credit. I was proud of the lads. Great effort.

I know I will get stick for this but it’s just my opinion…. If and it’s a big if we sign another defender I would keep mbemba at the right back and play colo and new cb together. Janmaat can be too much of a liability defensively, and I have to say mbemba looked composed at both attacking and defending yesterday. I haven’t watched the game on TV yet as I was there and I know sometimes it’s different when it’s on TV but that is my opinion. Also nobody can stick up for obertan after yesterday he is so lazy it’s unbelievable

Setchell I thought Mbemba was excellent yesterday. Especially when you consider Obertan was playing in front of him.

I still can’t see why he starts. He hangs about in our half looking busy when he really isn’t busy. His defensive work is usually half hearted and he very rarely does it properly.

Not sure if it’s laziness or he’s just thick.

I think last season Janmaat had a licence to go forward at any and every opportunity, it suited the way he likes to play and was one of the few positives.
So far this season he’s looked either out-of-sorts, or is struggling to adapt to McC’s changes.

Of course 2nd season syndrome could also be at play.

    Newcastle 0-1 Manchester United
    4 March 2015

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: “I think we have dominated for 90 minutes, maybe our best match of the season, especially in an away match we deserved the victory.
“We didn’t reward ourselves in the first half. It was a narrow escape because our rivals have won also so it’s a rat race.
“We created a lot of chances and could have scored much earlier. They also made two big chances and I think David De Gea rescued us at that time.”

    Colback – Tiote
Thauvin – De Jong – Aarons

Darlow, STaylor, Bigirmana, Sissoko, Obertan, Riviere, Perez

A sub that needs to happen to progress fitness.

    Sissoko > De Jong

I would bring Perez on for whomever to within 90 minutes.

  • 72 Belfast // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:14 AM

    Then yesterday

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: “We can be satisfied with the performance but not with the result – we were unlucky.

“We did not make the right choices in the final third but we played fantastic as a team. I like these kind of games when we work like this, but not this result.
“The performance was one of the best in my period but we don’t reward ourselves and there was only one club that wanted to win and that was us.”

  • 73 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:17 AM

Van Gaal is never honest or realistic about his team’s performance. But that seems to come with the territory of managing one of the big English clubs. Ferguson, Wenger, every Liverpool manager ever – they just refuse to acknowledge any good performance by the opposition. It’s always excuses if they don’t get the result they want. It’s pretty laughable at times. But it does make it that much sweeter when you can stick it up them.

  • 74 WWSBRD // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:18 AM

McClarens strategy seems to be overlapping attacking full backs surely Janmaat fits in that strategy pretty well. Yesterday Mbemba did well in defence but didn’t get forward so our attack down the right boiled down to early crosses and Obertan/Thauvin alone

  • 75 g.s.tooner // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:22 AM

Not sure about abdenbour. Who is mc gonna drop for him at cb? The newly appointed (again) captain or our newly brought in cb. It is a purchase that will push stevey T down the pecking order when i think he can still do a job. All of this whilest we have haidara and dummet as our two options for left back. One with a terrible first touch and a lack of vision or ability to play a pass when bombing down the left wing the other so slow that any winger in the league would leave him behind in a foot race.

We are desperate for a full back. Unless mbembe will be utilised there and we have

    Janmaat – collicini – abdennour – mbemba??

  • 76 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:24 AM

I would start Janmaat and Mbemba as our starting right and right centre backs.

Janmaat is a good player. Not sure all of the hate for him. Mbemba is solid at the back and I think him and Coloccini could make a good partnership but it takes abit of time. Taylor and Colo have played together for years, Mbemba has had two games with Coloccini.

STaylor although solid simply is injury prone so would have to be used as a squad player at best for me.

If he gets injured it brings Williamson into contention who should not even be looked at for me.

    For me

    Janmaat – Mbemba – Coloccini – Haidara

Is our best starting defence. With Dummett (for versatility) and STaylor on bench.

  • 77 WWSBRD // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:27 AM

What job can Saylor do? Probably up to scratch as a physio by now equally by the sounds of it Aymen is fairly schooled in that as well so added together they may make a CB who can last a season

  • 78 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:30 AM

I think our best 11 right now is

    Janmaat – Mbemba – Coloccini – Haidara
    Anita – Colback
    Sissoko – Wijnaldum – Perez

Darlow, Taylor, Tiote, Thauvin, Aarons, De Jong, Cisse

It’s so much stronger than last season. Dummett really should be on bench (as he can cover left back and centre back) but cannot think who for.

  • 79 magpiesi // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:30 AM

    Yesterday we did well but

Man U only had Smailing as a Ariel threat so played everything in front of Colo his strength is reading the passes so not surprised he did very well.

Our game was to sit and let them have the ball after 20 minutes

The first 20 we were trying to be attacking but Mata kept picking the ball up in space but lucky for us Rooney Memphis and co were not making runs behind so we survived.

Game plan nearly worked so I’m looking forward to the week ahead.

Northampton in cup where the likes of Dejong,Thauvin,Lascelles,Darlow,Dummett and maybe Cisse and Mitrovic upfront should get a game and get some confidence.

  • 80 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:31 AM

Abedennour has only player 39 games in 3 seasons. He is just as injury prone!

The money touted for him it would be like asking for the same amount for Taylor.

  • 81 Whumpie // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:33 AM

I thought Maclaren nailed it yesterday. He got his starting line-up right despite losing key players. His subs were well-timed, pragmatic and effective. His strategy worked and the players all knew their part.
There was great spirit but Mitrovic and Taylor both kept their heads. Best of all, his unpopular decision to stick with Colo suddenly made sense.
Great performances from the players – but big thumbs up to the gaffer too.

  • 82 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:34 AM

I think playing a full starting back four for fitness reasons and getting them more used to each other.

Mitrovic could use some game time and hopefully confidence with some goals.

Aarons, De Jong and Thauvin would start for me all need game time and have a point to prove and push the likes of Obertan, Perez and Wijnaldum in our starting 11, especially Obertan.

  • 83 WWSBRD // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:35 AM

Hence why I said together they would make a CB for a season bud

And is Saylor really the level of quality Aymen is? That what really makes the price tag rather than the injury record

  • 84 WWSBRD // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:36 AM

Nailed it? Man Utd ran over us for large sections of the game surely that wasn’t McClarens plan?

  • 85 Whumpie // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:37 AM

Here’s a thought: what if Maclaren can do what none of the managers in the past dozen years have been able to – stop Taylor being a bellend? Yesterday we saw one of those rare games when Taylor showed all his qualities without either cocking about, getting sent off or breaking down. If only Maclaren could work out how to get that out of him all the time…

  • 86 Whumpie // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:40 AM

84WWSBRD – yes. And it worked.
If we were playing for points awarded for posession then it wouldn’t have, but it’s all about goals and I’m sure Maclaren knew full well that Manure would have far more posession.

  • 87 Whumpie // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:41 AM

He also understood that above all else we needed to avoid a tonking, which I fully expected.
    Yep. Nailed it.

  • 88 pawl250 // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:43 AM

Abedennour is not even that great.

So much hype on here, similar to the likes of Abeid, Ben Arfa, Cabella and the list goes on. Remember all the hype for Sakho and he has nowt at Liverpool.

Half the blog like to think they know who to buy, the other half just follow like sheep. It’s like our fans hype every player who is linked.

I mean the amount of hype for Riviere and the excuses people used for his performances, they guy is and always will be not good enough for the Pl. I was never convinced.

I feel Abedennour is in the same category of over hyped players. Would prefer to spend that kind money on someone else.

Maybe Austin and a Right back.

Then aim for a centre back in January or next year. I think Mbemba and Colo are god enough and anyone coming in will most likely play second fiddle to them. Why pay 15m for that kind of player who will just play back up?

  • 89 WWSBRD // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:44 AM

It worked? We didn’t win the game mate. And it is about goals which we didn’t score any

We got a draw which is ok but Man Utd were unlucky not to beat us

  • 90 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:49 AM

If only we had RB in Haidaraz calibre. Mbabu jst disappointed bought at the same time with Haidara. We wldnt need a new RB but the squad has to competitive.

I think we r still in For Austin/Rolan and Abdennour. I dont care who starts wat matters we have competition in the squad and have alot of options. We have cup ties and looking for top 8.

We will get them. Fingers crossed.

  • 91 Whumpie // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:49 AM

89WWSBRD – I think I’ll file you under “people who can never be pleased”.

Read our history for the past 20 years, fella – then set your expectations more realistically. There is a reason why everyone else was pleased with yesterday’s performance and result. Few will go there and win; let alone a club that very nearly went down last year.
There are at least a dozen other teams in the league that would take a 0-0 at Old Trafford any day.

  • 92 WWSBRD // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:50 AM

I have no idea how good Aymen is but the clubs linked with them are better than us so that’s not a bad thing

He might not be that good but what if he actually is that good? As for displacing Colo or Mbemba boo boo really if he is better than them then he should be starting for us ahead of them

Money issue is pointless so not going into that again on here

And is it such an oddity we could get a CB, ST and RB cover?

  • 93 Jib // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:50 AM

With Obertan being wanted by St.Etienne and Nantes we should be playing with 11 men again which takes more pressure off the backs in which case we are probably better waiting until the Winter window for more defenders.
We have Lascelles to bed in , Good coming back from injury both Anita and Colback started their careers as full backs , no panic buying of a PL untested , injury prone , 6 foot Tunisian please.

  • 94 Setchell // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:51 AM

Was it not mbemba who crossed for mitrovic’s header? As I say it’s my opinion janmaat defensively is utter rubbish. First priority for a rb is defensive duties, did you notice how many goals we conceded last season? So yes he is decent going forward but too poor defensively, I am not solely blaming janmaat as I think Dummet, Williamson, Taylor and colo are normally poor defensively. But janmaat is weaker than colo at defending in my opinion so would play mbemba right back and colo partnering a new cb with haidara lb (would prefer new lb aswell but not going to happen)

  • 95 WWSBRD // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:53 AM

Few will go there and win but quite a few will go there and try to win the game. Not everyone was pleased with yesterday’s game though bud it’s all about opinion and just because u say yes doesn’t make it unquestionable. Actually though I am ok with yesterday’s result as I have said but am not jumping for joy over a draw where we struggled to get out of our half for large stretches of the game

And u can file me where u please

  • 96 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 11:55 AM

We look so organized in defence never having gaps in our defence. it looks like everyone knows their role.

Is that Aerial threat that is still a problem. I wayched the crosses og Manure and if they had a 6″0 or taller we wld have lost.

First episode features the lovely combination of Wenger,Van Gaal, Rodgers and Moanrinio all sitting round the table together.
I was struggling with a title for the show but came up with
” One flew over the Cuckoos nest ‘ for this deluded bunch who grate on each week. With Leighton James and his twin brother Robbie Savage hosting it’s bound to be a winner ( after a dubious penalty or cheating dive ) .

  • 100 WWSBRD // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:03 PM

I mentioned early crosses no? It depends on the set up of the team as to what priorities u place on positions, we seem to be looking at attacking FBs under McClaren so attacking will be their main focus with defensive duties shared between them, the winger, CDMs and CBs, Mbemba did well yesterday but he struggled to attack imo Janmaat whereas Janmaat would of gotten forward more

I also don’t think Janmaat is a terrible defender tbh but hey ho can’t agree on everything haha

For me Janmaat is our RB no question and Mbemba is CB, Colo needs replacing long term in our back line

  • 101 Rotonda heights // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:04 PM

i think mitro, mbemba and wijnadum give the lie to ”untested” in the premiership. with so many foreign players and coaches i think it’s a bit of a myth these days about lengthy periods of acclimatisation needed.

That said, the injury record of Abdennour is a concern and if we could shift willo and get Dunk I would be more than happy.

  • 102 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:05 PM

I dont care who starts but if we have a competitive squad and a 60% wage on revenue. Its the deadwood we shld sell off and get space to have a competitive squad.

It sucks wen u r so organised in the back and u lose an aerial battle. Southampton remember.

As you say can’t agree all the time. So let’s just agree to disagree haha. I wouldn’t be totally against mbemba playing cb with a quality cb and janmaat rb but wouldn’t be my first choice of things…. But that’s why I’m not a manager haha. Does make me laugh tho when I listen to some people and they aren’t willing to listen to other people’s opinion because they are right and that’s that! But that is not aimed at anyone on here so don’t think I am being funny with anyone. Its good just to have a crack with people who give opinion back and don’t always have it there way or no way haha

  • 105 Slank // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:21 PM

I was impressed with Perez as I have been since he first arrived at the club.

I have often thought that he would make a good central midfield player as he has the pace, close ball control to get out of tricky situations and can pass the ball accurately. Could he be better than De Jong ?

  • 106 sparky55 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:25 PM

Colo had a good game yesterday but is still always dominated in the air. he’s very comfortable on the ground and dispossessed man u players on several occasions yesterday…but our/his archilles heel is he can’t compete in the air unless against someone like Defoe and even that would be a close call.

having a 6 ft 6 defender play alongside him will not help because the ball will not always fall to the taller defender. He played well yesterday but still has too many short-comings for me. His time has come and gone…he should have been allowed to go IMO…we have enough in the squad to cope and if one more player does come in we’ll be more than sorted.

Bad decision to keep him and an even worse decision to extend his contract IMO

But yes he played well yesterday…so that’s 2 very poor games and one good game this season…the good games will be rare so let’s not get excited about Colo’s ability and expect him to turn into a good consistent Centre half all of sudden because it just won’t happen.

  • 107 nightfa11 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:30 PM

Finally we have a good team.. As for attacking midfielder options: winaljdum, aarons, thauvin, perez, sdj..I really dont see a place for sissoko.. Id sell him.. Hes a good player, But keeping him, would mean that either aarons or perez will be kept on the bench and become unhappy.. Sissoko is good, But doesnt excell at anything..ok as a winger.. Ok as a cm..But not if a good offer comes..15 Mio plus..Id sell him..

Id also sell obertan, marveaux, rivi, goufrann and wili.. High wages, no input.. Maybe Id keep obertan for another come on after 70 minutes..His pace could do some damage to tired defenders..But hes not a starter..

  • 109 sparky55 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:32 PM

Thauvin and Aarons / Perez out wide depending on who we’re playing looks a great option to me. Would also like to see SDJ at some point as well.

Just can’t see Sissoko or Cisse staying.

Perez put in a great shift yesterday and is so versatile it’s great see.

Perez and Mitrovic were both fantastic defensively as well yesterday…great to see.

Even without Cisse and Sissoko I think we have some great options and scope tactically with the players at our disposal…I’m very positive after yesterday 🙂

  • 110 OneAlanShearer // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:38 PM

Sissoko has had to shoulder a lot of the responsibility in matches and I personally think with the pressure off his pace and driving runs could be a real asset to the team. I’ve seen aarons fade and Perez in matches as well probably down to the same thing. The competition for places drives the side to do better. Gouffran, Marveaux,Bigi, vuckic, obertan should all be in the queue to leave ahead of sissoko. The only way I would agree to him being sold is if we bought a solid centre back and striker possibly cover at right back to offset it. Centre back especially. The best thing u am seeing is we play without fear…something that has to bring better results long term.

At home I’d like to see if 352 can work. Perez and mitrovic the front 2. We would have some immense attacking threat…to do that buying another centre back still leaves enough cover.

  • 111 sweendog // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:40 PM

looking forward to the Northampton game to see how our attack is, yesterday showed our defence is getting better. would love to see a 3 or 4 nil to give confidence for arsenal who’ll be really tough.

  • 112 Ian Toon // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:40 PM

Tsunki – Wijnaldum is a class act and he did tire. The reason for the change in the balance of play had much to do with LVG’s cautious mindset and his stubborn arrogance that he might have got something wrong. Talking to a number of London based ManU fans their biggest criticism of him is his cautionary style which has been a feature this season. He stuck rigidly to the 2 DM’s and it was after around an hour that Carrick with his desire for the forward pass that I believe you could argue there was a shift in the balance of play. The consensus few is that Herrera ( who I rate) would provide better balance particularly at Old Trafford. LVG seems to have alienated fans and players alik January who some on here thought we should try to buy was one of the poorest players on the field. Give me Perez any time over him- let’s give Perez a run against Northampton with Arsenal in mind.
Flip side and Schweinsteiger in DM going off I thought they looked more vulnerable in defence.
Belfast – I have long thought that LVG talks a good game. I can’t see Macca coaching out any degree of creativity from our players. As I said much earlier I can’t imagine SAF being happy with 70% possession and a clean sheet. A solid defence at a price means less London based fans travelling North. Michael Owen disagreed with your assessment of mbemba but he changed his tune after about 20 minutes and was singing his praises. Depay was largely nullified thereafter. I would leave Mb at full back – in fact play the same defence against Arsenal.
Some bizarre posts reading back – we fully deserved our point. We’re still bedding in but I am optimistic- things can only get better.
    Enjoy your day.

Ahem is a huge risk good player but could play les games than Taylor per season .
He gets injured in the ligue one so how would he handle the intensity of the prem week in week out .
There are better players available for less money .
Even van Dijk could be abetter shout with krul Anita ,jaanmart and de Jong around at least the communication would be better in the back four.
We need to start seeing if the kids , Goode, Satka and lascalles are actually ever going to make the grade and if not why keep them ?
We could even use one of them as a lone to Celtic to leverage a deal with van Dijk

You guys are crazy who think we dont need Sissoko he an ignition to our attack we look useless upfront without him. I dont care he plays but he has to start.

We missed him yesterday. We always miss him we he doesn’t play.

  • 117 Our Toon // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:45 PM

Sissoko was missed yesterday, the biggest asset he has is carrying the ball and we didn’t have that outlet yesterday. The transition from defence to attack. Excellent defensive display and thank you Wayne Rooney for always coming short rather than running in behind, what an overrated player he is. Colo was immense!! As for mitrovic, I think alot got to see why some of us wanted him more than Austin….excellent performance. Cisse with a bad touch toward the end and a scuffed shot but he did twist Shaw inside and outside which you don’t see happening to often.

Can’t remember who is was debating with yesterday off the top of my head regarding Perez on the wing, just wanted to say well done sir you were spot on and I was wrong….the lad put a serious shift.

  • 120 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:50 PM

Sissoko is only one of two players with pace and power in our midfield and one of the players capable of carrying the ball out and turning defence into attack without him the whole game changes imo

  • 121 sparky55 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:52 PM

I think with the experience SDJ has right now as compared to Perez, I think SDJ is better equipped to put in that killer pass that’ll split a defence wide open whereas Perez right now would be head down and going for goal himself…it’s just his instinct right now.

But I really do believe he could become a very good No 10 in the future.

I like him out wide at the minute…he’s good defensively, he wants the ball…he links up play…he’s dangerous going forward, he applies good pressure on anyone within 20 years of him and he’s fit and quick causing all sorts of problems for the opposition…but no-where near as clever as SDJ just yet in my book.

  • 122 nightfa11 // Aug 23, 2015 at 12:53 PM

Id personally sell marveaux, obertan, rivi, wili, sissoko, cisse (Maybe even tiote if we sign a quality dmc..we do need quality there..not a headless bully).. But I would keep vuckic..Hes got skills and is on very low no harm there..

As for cb..I think we all agree we need one..But having colo, Taylor, Mbemba and dummet is not bad.. Im just afraid Mbemba will be dropped to the bench if we sign one..considering mclaren is in love with colo and Taylor..and for me..Mbemba was our motm yesterday..Some player..Lescalles should be loaned out..its the only way to progress..

I think the colback..Anita partnership lacks some serious creativity in the midfield. Obertan doesn’t offer enough. Haidira final ball was very poor..not convinced on this lad as a starting l.b. demba is unlucky to lose his cb spot to s.taylor but depay made easy work of him yesterday at r.b. ..the fullback positions is a big worry for me.

I don’t think so as Thauvin on one flank and Sissoko on the other is what we need not either or, we seem to have that in the middle now with Gini who was excellent in patches yesterday at carrying the ball out

  • 126 Jib // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:01 PM

There are so many on here that clearly enjoy their footy but don’t really have much of clue.
One example of this is the constant calling for new defenders when we get beaten.
Yesterday proved that the Colo haters haven’t got a clue.
To shout for a Dunk or Abdennour to come in shows real naivety . We got really lucky with Mbemba and Janmaat , normally it takes a good season for a defender to bed in to the EPL , some like Williamson never do completely , as SM has recognised . We have Lascelles and Dummett on the books with other younguns to come through why spend millions to probably end up with what we have already.

    RB: Mbemba, Anita

    CAM: Thauvin, Sissoko, Perez
    CF: Perez.

Those are positions with no direct competition.

Colo has been beyond poor for longer than the majority can remember while Saylor has spent the majority of his time on the treatment table.

The one thing I am really happy about is the depth of options in midfield now

    Sissoko sdj perez

    Colback tiote anita

    With these at a push

Obertan Gouffran Bigi marveaux vuckic …which is why I would sell all 5.

The defence does not look as strong

    Mbemba Janmaat Colo

    saylor Haidara willo

Strikers look thin on the ground
    Mitrovic cisse Riviere

I think there is room for a clear out still and a few recruits. May yet happen.

    But optimistic for the season.

  • 136 mindshaft // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:14 PM

defence played well yesterday, especially when Mbemba worked out Depay after 20 mins.
It helped that Manure played in front of us without trying to get behind our lines or throwing in lots of crosses. It also helped that Smalling can’t head the ball very well
CB pairing still a worry for me , Collo and Saylor were good against the style manure played but against arsenal are going to struggle – especially if Giroud plays
squads starting to look decent and a couple more transfer windows should see us attract better players and build a team to compete with top 6
we were never going to be able to do this in one window
at least we are targeting better players rather than unearthed gems

  • 137 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:14 PM

Guya we shld b really realistic. We wont sell Sissoko. He is our best player and we can’t replace him with an unknown in Thauvin. Realistically I wld sell Cisse, Obertan, Guofrann, Vuckic, Bigi, Marvuex and Fergie. Get a CB and CF.

I wld like Abdennour and Austin

jesus christ…Janmaat was our stand out player of the season last year and two poor games into the season and everyones written him off and putting him on the subs bencn for a player we bought as a centre half where re really need some quality.

Janmaat will be good as new within a couple of weeks

bizarre that people on here are thinking Dunk will be a decent option at CB, I live in Brighton and most Brighton fans think he’s decent at best

Bit irritating at the moment that williamson keeps getting ahead of Lascelles in the squad. Think lascelles has got great potential and can soon be a future captain for us and possibly future england starter

  • 146 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:23 PM

Willo shld also leave on Sale. To give space for the new CB. The advantage with the current squad. Put the new players aside.

This is their club and they have an affiliation with it. They have been here for 4yrs and above seen the good and bad. They can sweat blood for it. However much Cisse, Willo or Obertan sit on the bench. They will come off it and show commitment coz this is their club now and will not make noise.

  • 149 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:26 PM

The fact that Willomis getting ahead of Lascelles should tell you how the lad is viewed at this point in time. He was hardly a standout player for Forrest last season and if we bring in another CB don’t be surprised to see him go out on loan

  • 150 Slank // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:27 PM

I’m not sure we can sell Marveaux as isn’t he injured ?

I think there will be buyers for Williamson, Obertan, Goofy, Vuckic, and Ferguson as there is cover in their positions.

I don’t think the club will sell Cisse and Sissoko. Cisse is needed in case Mitrovic got injured or more likely suspended, Rivière still injured and Armstrong out on loan.

  • 151 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:28 PM

Lasceles shld b given a loan with a 24hr return to the club. I dont think he will get a chance this season.

Willo Taylor and even Dummett are ahead of him.

  • 152 JamesToon // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:28 PM

I think we’re done in the transfer market tbh, we’ve now got depth for each of the positions in our squad

    Williamson – £500k
    Gouffran – £1m
    Obertan – £1m

    GK: Krul/Darlow
    RB: Janmaat/Mbemba/Anita
    CB: Mbemba/Taylor/Lascelles
    CB: Coloccini/Dummett
    LB: Haidara/Dummett/Anita
    CM: Anita/Tiote/Wijnaldum
    CM: Colback/SDJ/Kemen
    RM: Thauvin/Sissoko/Marveaux/Aarons
    LM: Perez/Aarons/Thauvin/Marveaux/Sissoko
    AM: Wijnaldum/SDJ/Perez/Thauvin/Marveaux/Sissoko
    CF: Mitrovic/Cisse/Riviere/Toney/Perez/SDJ

  • 153 JamesToon // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:29 PM

Dummett shouldn’t be ahead, lascelles is a proper CB dummett is not, who should only be used as cover for haidara and last resort backup for CB. Lascelles should be 3rd/4th choice not 5th

  • 154 JamesToon // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:31 PM

Possibly if lascelles is loaned then he can come back as a ready made replacement for coloccini maybe

  • 155 lochinvar // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:31 PM

Would like to think that McLaren and the Coaching team are starting to help the players change their mind set in the same way as Andy Murray and the Ryder Cup Team have learnt the winning mentality and determination to overcome obstacles ( such as Man United ). Janmaat will have seen yesterday’s resolve and will want to be part of it. Roof will lift off when Mitrovic gets his first goals hopefully against Arsenal. We fans need to do the same – give the players something to make them tingle ( and I’m not talking laughing gas ) . Looking forward to better days.

  • 156 will die for the toon army // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:41 PM

Personally i don’t care if we don’t sign any more players, we have signed quality players and managed so far to keep our best players which has never happened before, well happy with this squad, give them all time to gel and it will be a very good season.

  • 158 Slank // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:43 PM

Well said. I bet Janmaat feels a right plonker (or whatever it is in Dutch) seeing that collective determined backs-to-the-wall performance.

The team is improving and now the SJP crowd need to respond.

Very pleased with the result, thought it would be a similar type of game and thought the players chosen should be the ones playing….with the one exception, obertan. All in all, pretty chuffed, hopefully we continue to see improvements individually and as a team.

  • 163 SPRINGY // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:48 PM

We’ve been screaming out for centre halfs for years and as good as mbemba was yesterday he needs to keep playing centre half… janmaat was a bollick at swansea but he is one of many players that need to get there sharpness back and if he doesn’t up his game then think about changin things

  • 165 Slank // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:52 PM

Marveaux is technically a very gifted player. His downfall was his attitude and his inability to get stuck in, unlike someone like Perez who has the right attitude.

Perhaps McClaren and the coaching team, especially the new Psycho, can turn him around.

  • 166 nightfa11 // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:53 PM

the more i think about our CBs..the more confused i get..

we have: colo, taylor, mbemba, wili, lescalless and dummet..

i think we all agree wili is sh*t..and will be sold..ok.. given away..w/e..

so that leaves us with taylor, colo, mbemba, lescalless and dummet..

now..taylor is a decent CB..fragile, but decent.. colo is old..this is probably his last season.. mbemba is a star to be.. dummet is a decent backup..and lescalless is a mistery..he might be a very good defender or his limits might be same as dummets..we dont know..he was a 4 mio gamble.. its a mess.. we have a lot of defenders, 3 are good…of which 2 are either injured 70% of the time or out of 6 CBs, we basically have only 1 long term defender..that we know for sure is quality..

  • 167 JackButler // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:54 PM

I think Perez played his way into a starting 11 yesterday, the lad gave an excellent performance and worked his backside off but also offered a real outlet going forward and linked very well with Haidara, I’d be pretty pi@&ed if he was dropped to be honest

  • 168 toon22 // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:55 PM

The problem with Tiote is he needs a ball player next to him,a system we could actualy play since those dark days of AP.
Let Tiote win it and coach him to just pass to his DM partner,i would sit Anita next to him.
When we had AP “coaching”him he was expected to play the ball after winning it,usually nobody in the team came to him or gave him that option.
Leaving him to piroett or pass to the other team.

With Tiote in DM he gives that area a whole lot more bite,he just needs a team who understands he needs a quick/easy out ball.

  • 169 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:55 PM

Colo had a decent game by his standards. However, please not let’s get carried away. It should’ve been a defeat but for a generous linesman. You could’ve marched the Grand Old Duke’s army between Colo and Saylor for that one. And Colo was lucky to escape as he once again got outjumped and outmuscled. Good job Janmaat wasn’t there.

  • 170 SUTTY1978 // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:57 PM

James, your opinion of Lascelles is majorly over inflated, he’s just not that good. Think it will take him until he’s 25, 26 to make it into a half decent CB.

JIB, your comments on Colo proving his doubters wrong, wow. We didn’t even defend very well yesterday, Man U (who have averaged 1 shot on target/game) cut through us like a knife through butter.
We managed to make their previously flaccid attack look like world beaters for periods of the game.

  • 171 toon22 // Aug 23, 2015 at 1:59 PM

Im would hope our new coach dont just decide who he likes and plays them,i would hope he picks a team to beat the opposition.

I also think Perez need to play against Arsenal,he would suit them. But he might not suit teams like Stoke/Bournemouth.

  • 172 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 23, 2015 at 2:03 PM

If Lascelles isn’t good enough, what’s old Mr Carr doing? Leaving aside the well known international players that are the bread and butter of an average scout, who has the old man spotted? The only decent find I can think of is Perez.

  • 177 cyprus // Aug 23, 2015 at 2:06 PM

    Ok, Stevie,
Desperate game, desperate defending with a heroic result yesterday. With just one team wanting to win it and with their CB parked in our half, as the commentator said.

Good result, but even if we draw the rest of the games we still might go down.

You might say, you first want to steady the ship and I’ll accept that. You might say Obertan is blackmailing you, I’ll accept that too. Or, that you are still figuring out the squad…

But, you’ve been given the biggest net spend of the PL, now you must, eh, like, win a game. With 0 shots on goal it’s hard to get goals mate. And, if the approach will be snatch and grab, ie. ‘stealing the points’ (see our counter), then chances are it won’t happen soon.

So, vs. Arsenal, ok, camp in our half, like this game, and hope for the best. But in most other games I want you to try to win, ok?

We’ll be in the bottom 3 by the end of this weekend. Early days of course, but we need 3 pointers too.

A shot on target is one that goes thru to the keeper and the GK saves right. So if they had one then Colo was solid. Manre are world beaters like it or not their players are far better than us.

Colo blocked like 5 shots and made several interceptions.

Blackley, Lascelles is a squad filling young player in an area of the pitch we always get injuries. He’s got potential, that’s it. There aren’t many CB’s playing in the PL who are that young. Lascelles was 3m or thereabouts, stones will go for £30m+.
I agree though, Carr has been responsible for some right duffers. Stiil stunned at buying Thauvin for that cash, it would be like someone offering us £15m for vuckic. Both players showed huge potential at a young age but neither lived up to it

  • 184 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 23, 2015 at 2:17 PM

It’s the scout’s job to find talent. But not only that, they’ve got to have the right mentality. What’s the point of signing players like Niall Ranger? Was he one of Carr’s?

    Jack @ 167

Yes I agree with you about Perez. He deserves to start, but where ?

He could replace Obertan but so could Sissoko and Aarons assuming Thauvin is on the other wing.

I feel he could operate as a number 10 alongside or supporting Mitrovic in a 4-4-2 formation with two wingers. I also think he could operate alongside Gini in midfield (Tiote, Anita, Perez, Gini) with Thauvin and Mitrovic up front.

  • 190 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 23, 2015 at 2:25 PM

We shouldn’t be signing squad fillers. Every multi million pound signing should be better than what we’ve got or with the potential to be so within 12 to 18 months.

Never seen Thauvin until yesterday. His girst little cameo looked promising. Composure and good balance. Liked the way he dropped his shoulder. However, after that I got very worried indeed. Rooney looked onside to me, but that’s not my point. You don’t want to be defending like that. No one was near him. If he’d held his run for a split second there’d be no argument. And anyway, a different linesman would have ruled it onside.

Newcastle earned their point and this has to be viewed as a positive result with the signs of better things to come. Reading the blog you would think we have an excellent record on the road.
The most pleasing thing was that unlike under Pardew and the hapless Carver the team adapted. Early doors we were wide open in midfield and Macca cMany better Newcastle teams have left the Theatre of Screams without a point so that has to be seen as a positive result with the signs of better to come.

The best thing is that unlike Pardew and the wretched Carver’s team that team adapted. We were being roasted in midfield and so he pulled the Dutch lad Winegums and the excellent Perez back a bit and even the big Serb up front put a bit of a defensive shift. Then -with the storm largely weathered – the decision to unleash a fresh and pacy Cisse on a tiring man U defence almost came off at the death,

It’s going to take a few games to get this team going but I am liking this new flexibility.

Compare/contrast to Man who despite the millions paid looked devoid of invention or quality. The midfield served up enough ball to win that game but they could not find a killer cross or pass all game and – aside from one decent wallop from Rooney that was blocked – the shooting was powder-puff stuff. No wonder the crowd were getting antsy. They reminded me of Dalgleish era Newcastle, many good players but one paced (slowish) and lacking variety in their points of attack. Home supporters just hate that.

I would still like to see Newcastle with a on-field general to call the shots. Interestingly Man U improved ten-fold once Carrick came on, We need somebody of that quality but about 10 years younger.

We’ll beat this lot cack at St James’ – no problem at all.ame pitch side to make changes. Wijnaldum and Perez played a little deeper to link with the 2 DM’s and Mitrovic was asked to put a defensive shift. The tide was turned after 20 minutes rather than waiting until half time. Decisive action from an experienced coach; he was really bellowing out instructions. We thereafter visibly seemed to grow in confidence.
It’s going to take a while for Macca to get the team fully functioning and fans need to appreciate this and that we’re very much a work in progress. Next up , Arsenal who represent a good test but the average fan will be feeling a lot more confident that we can turn them over.
