Is This Newcastle’s Best Team For Northampton?

10:17 pm, Monday, August 24th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

It’s difficult to know exactly what side Steve McClaren will play against Northampton Town tomorrow night in the League Cup, but it looks likely he will play some of the top subs who haven’t had much playing time so far this season.

Daryl Janmaat is available after his one match ban,  and it’s likely that he will come back in at right back to add his experience to the side – and maybe we will see a new center-back pairing in Williamson and Lascelles,  since it seems certain that Coloccini and Taylor will retain their places for the game at home to Arsenal on Saturday.

jamaal lascelles

Jamaal Lascelles – likely to get start tomorrow night

Steve McClaren in his press conference today made it clear that he would by no means be taking Northampton Town lightly – so maybe this is the starting eleven that McClaren will start tomorrow night at St. James’ Park – with a 7:45 pm kick off time.

Janmaat Williamson (c) Lascelles Haidara
Tiote Anita
Obertan de Jong Aarons
Subs: Elliot Mbemba Coloccini Wijnaldum Colback Thauvin Mitrovic

It will be a chance for Williamson and Lascelles to show what they can do at the back for Newcastle, and McClaren may even want to put Williamson in the shop window, since if we do manage to bring in a top center-back by next Tuesday night, Mike could be leaving Newcastle, either permanently or on loan.

That’s a good side, and it gives an opportunity for our top subs like Darlow, Tiote, de Jong and Aarons to show what they can do – and we could also see some changes made in the second half,  so that maybe Thauvin gets another run out before Saturday.

We would expect Thauvin, Mbemba and Mitrovic to start against Arsenal on Saturday, with the defense being unchanged, so that may explain why we have the above team playing.

What would your team be for tomorrow night?

Yeah perez got a 4 …outrageous rating if you ask me he didnt lose the ball once and made some great covering challemgea and also nearly scored……also booking haidara for challenging a 50/50 to score was shit reffing

  • 3 toonicle // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:23 PM

Why play Willo when we have players in that spot that need more matches? I say Lascalles and Mbemba should play together and see how it goes.

  • 4 will die for the toon army // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:26 PM

I thinl all the players that have played ahead of Aarons are better than him . He might even miss out
on the bench if Sissoko comes back .
Obertan is more experienced. On and off but I think is ahead of him . If Obertan is staying. I wld
send him to loan . But he shld first get his chance like Perez to start a game . if Sissoko is still
    injured. start out:
    Thauvin…………… Perez …………… . Aarons
    ………………………. Mitrovic
But Mcca iz going for :
    Thauvin. ……… .Wijnaldum ……… . .Perez
    ………………. ……Mitrovic

Lads pile into us tomorrow I watched worthing play Northampton in a friendly, they weren’t much to look at.
Toney played, you could see he’s got good feet but looked poor in the air.

  • 6 SPRINGY // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:27 PM

the refs are always bottling the bigger sides now lettin players swarming and shoutin and intimidate them and eventually do what they want….thats the way it looks to me sometimes…need to grow a pair

  • 7 toon kk // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:30 PM

Stevie won’t be putting out our strongest side but he will have a go by giving some of the other lads a run oout.

  • 8 Average_Contents // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:37 PM

    Ed, how many times.

    Obertron? no, just fcuking NO.

He shouldn’t be anywhere near the first 11. He shouldn’t be anywhere near a fcuking football pitch to be perfectly honest. He’s bonk.

  • 9 Nufc-83 // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:42 PM

Will die for nufc- you think obertan is better than Aaron’s?? I have never seen such a gutless player in my entire life he is absolutely useless and for you to think he is better than Aaron’s shows how limited your football knowledge is. Do you like fast running as maybe athletics is more your sport?

  • 10 scubydu // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:46 PM

    Defence not defense ed !?

  • 11 The next Mike Williamson // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:49 PM

    Janmaat Lascelles Williamson Haidara
    Tiote (c) Anita
    Gouffran De Jong Aarons
I guess he’ll play this team. I’d like to see Vuckic given a game as well as Kemen.

  • 15 Lindisfarne // Aug 24, 2015 at 11:00 PM

The club will not want to ‘cup-tie’ Williamson (with luck), Sissoko (with regret), Aarons (with £ signs) & Obertan ( hopefully).

  • 16 one fine day // Aug 24, 2015 at 11:05 PM

I am sure like the rest of us you have clamoured to have a club that again takes the cups seriously .
So why are you saying a good side will be one with Williamson not only as the pivot of the back 4 with an inexperienced new lad next too him , but you make him captain??wtf?
He is a player who by rights should be off to a championship club(at best) next week so why give him m” game time’ we are all talking about..
the only time so far I think lascalles has been on the pitch with willo was against club atlas on tour and we conceded two inside the first 20mins.
sick of this SH@t man , fringe players getting a run out etc. , NO all that does is give’s a manager a ready made excuse if we loose.
If we are cruising then give the kids 20 mins at the end but willo needs to be thrown through a shop window not put in it
    Same goes for gouffran

  • 17 croftus5678 // Aug 24, 2015 at 11:12 PM

need to give fringe players and the ones who need cofidence ect a game tomoz imo.

this game would have been perfect for river but sadly i believe he’s injured 🙁

  • 18 lochinvar // Aug 24, 2015 at 11:12 PM

    Read this and weep.
FFS – You couldn’t make it up if you tried.
Maybe John Carver could apply – would keep him in football and he could fix Defoes diary so he’s put of the country on Derby days !

How would you like to be a personal assistant for a Premier League footballer?
The rare opportunity has arisen to be Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe’s right hand man – or woman.
The London-based job could earn the lucky applicant up to £60,000 a year – but that salary comes at a cost.
Defoe’s PA will be expected to be on call 24/7, and will be charged with organising the star’s life, from doing his laundry to making sure his fridge is full.
Running the life of an elite sportsman also includes making sure the plants are watered.
The advert, seeking a Jermain Defoe & Family/Enterprise Personal Assistant, featured on and offers a unique glimpse into the life of a Premier League footballer.
It states that the individual must be “very flexible, hands-on and be capable of multitasking”.
It also say that the main tasks involved will be “scheduling and highly organising the manager’s and the family’s private, social and business calendars, arranging all public appearances, arranging and securing travel arrangements, working on selected business projects and maintaining daily itineraries.”
Another duty for the lucky winner will be to take charge of sending mum Sandra a Mother’s Day card.

Sorry mate, Aarons is already better than Obertan and has the potential to be a lot better. Obertan has been such a failure, a total waste of a shirt, I honestly do not think many prem sides would have him on their bench.

  • 25 custurd // Aug 25, 2015 at 1:31 AM

You forgot to mention that the successful applicant must be able to build iphone apps while scooping up dog shit and wiping boogers from their esteemed boss’s face with the licked corner of a hanky! WTF does Defoe’s wife do while her husband is out “working” 90 minutes a week?! 🙂

  • 26 Our Toon // Aug 25, 2015 at 1:45 AM

Our squad players should be played against Northampton and not the strongest XI as some have suggested. If our squad players aren’t good enough to beat them then we should be very worried about the season as whole.

The stupidest thing that could happen tomorrow is for Wijinaldum or Mitrovic to play and to get injured, missing 2 or 3 months if not longer because we feared the mighty Northampton. Absolutely bonkers some of you who want the strongest XI playing.

Squad players also need game time otherwise why bother staying at the club. Young lads like Kemen are going to need to be involved if not starting otherwise they’ll jump ship to a bigger European Team that will play them in these type of games. In a few years if they come good we will look back and say ahh yes I remember him, we didn’t involve him against Northampton so he left, now he plays for an elite European club.

  • 29 swemag // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:04 AM

    From BBC:

‘Crystal Palace have scored 16 set piece goals since Alan Pardew was named as their manager; more than any other Premier League side in that period.’

How the hell could we suck so badly at that during his years here?? Amazing. And don’t pull the shit about this being Pulis team.

  • 30 Novocastrian66 // Aug 25, 2015 at 4:03 AM

What do you put it down to Swemag? Pardew’s tactical genius?

  • 31 Santon03 // Aug 25, 2015 at 4:49 AM

I look forward to this game for our best chance to get SM 1st win. I’m expecting experiment different tactic and players hopefully 2 strikers and probably 3 at the back. Possible appearance Satka, MArv and Kemen

the forwards need matches so any will do, manu, mitro, perez, toney, or cisse.
Big possibility is Toney, he is from there.

  • 32 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 25, 2015 at 5:32 AM

Whatever it is. Palace are playing at a higher level with pardew there now.

I think Newcastle job was just too big for Pardew. He crumbled under the pressure and constant scrutiny of our club.

  • 33 nut meg // Aug 25, 2015 at 5:37 AM

SM is playing a 4-2-3-1 system that he’s instilling into the players. This system will more than likely be used until all the SQUAD fully understand it. It could also be the preferred system that will be used throughout the club,academy,U21s & first team. This would NOT be a good time to change to another NEW system imho.

  • 34 Santon03 // Aug 25, 2015 at 5:52 AM

    nut meg

I noticed we actually already used that system every game now, when we have the ball 2 cb split up and Anita drop back temporarily at sweeper position while 2fb move further forward. I’m not that confident with Willo Llaceles partnership at the back tbh, hopefully they will prove me wrong.
I’m really hoping to see 2 forwards tactic.

  • 35 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:00 AM

scubydu…Ed lives in the States where you spell it “Defense” as oppose to the English way “Defence”.

Personally when speaking of sports I prefer the American way, because you also spell “defensive” and defensiveness” with an “s” and not a “c”.

Does anyone know if this is considered poor English grammar? 🙂

  • 36 Ron Knee // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:33 AM

    Morning jesper
The suffix -sive is pretty common: defensive, offensive, adhesive, etc.
I can’t think of many words ending in -cive, apart from conducive.
    Where’s our Google King?

  • 37 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:36 AM

Ron…just say his name three times and he’ll be here 😉 lol

  • 38 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:38 AM

Morning Ron…isn’t there also something with the word “license” and “licence”?

  • 39 Ron Knee // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:38 AM

    Yoo-hoo, Jeff!

  • 40 Ron Knee // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:41 AM

In UK English, the verb is ‘to license’, the noun is ‘a licence’. In the USA I think the noun and verb are the same, ‘license’.

  • 41 expatmag // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:56 AM

    My team would be

    Janmaat Lascelles Mbembe Dummett

    Flauvin Perez Dejong Aarons

Subs Elliott Williamson Gouffran Kemen Sterry Cisse Roberts

  • 42 expatmag // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:01 AM

I think it is possibly as simple as he has been backed up by his chairman in the transfer market and more importantly, he has some very good coaches at hus disposal at Palace.

  • 43 expatmag // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:06 AM

If you had watched us play under Pardew regularly, you would have noticed the complete and utter lack of invention and planning of any sort of variation at set pieces.

What has happened at Palace is more than likely down to the effort his coaches have put in rather than his own abilities.

Pardews record as a failure whereever he had been is self evident.

  • 44 Thump // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:12 AM

@expat: Don’t forget that he’s invested in Palace.

That being said, I still reckon they’ll go down next season.

  • 45 Tsunki // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:15 AM

I don’t think Pardew is a set piece coach ha ha that idea does make me laugh. To a large extent it is an inherited team and of course a different coaching setup. I don’t think Alan has been reading the set piece pamphlet after all these years.

  • 46 nut meg // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:28 AM

Just out of interest does anyone know what the song for Mitrovic is?

  • 47 Mag52 // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:31 AM

So we’re back to Pardew talk again, and there’ll always be those who will look for any reason to account for success he might have other than his own ability.
    Bit pathetic really.

  • 48 SUTTY1978 // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:47 AM

Noticed a few people questioning the Sun giving Perez a 4/10 rating for the last game. The Sun have changed from a manual rating system to using The Opta Stats rating. Statistically he deserved a 4/10, unfortunately a shot whistling by the post might as well be in row Z as far as stats go.

  • 49 SuperShearer // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:48 AM

Twitter sources claiming Valencia are in talks with Monaco over Abdennour. Do we still want him? I have no idea, never seen him play but his injury record is on par with Taylor which makes me think he might be best avoided.

  • 50 expatmag // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:49 AM

I wasnt aware that I was answering your post but seeing your stuck your oar in, it us more pathetic that you are unable to realise what 95% of NUFC supporters do:

That under this unwarranted egomaniac of a failure, Newcastle United broke the worst of every record in the clubs history and the only way we were going under this dinosaur was downwards.

There again, like the supporters of Reading Charlton WHU and Southampton, We all must be wrong about the ineptitude of this infiltrator into football management.

  • 51 the broons // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:50 AM

Thauvin in for obertan and dummet on the bench but yeah pretty much the team I expect to play.

  • 52 Jail for Ashley // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:53 AM

Basically Pardews set piece routine was to hoof it to Willo, evidently Scott Dann is a better header of the ball as the exact same routine was used.

  • 53 the broons // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:54 AM

I thought it was the chronicle that gave him that rating? and how exactly do these stats work?

Because apart from our defenders surely everyone else had pretty pathetic stats especially Colback that gave away most of his passes and missed most of his tackles?

And by estimate I would say that Perez had the most successful dribbles out of everyone, surely thats a stat worth taking note of.

  • 54 the broons // Aug 25, 2015 at 7:56 AM

    Jail for Ashley

Yep, did you not know? WIlliamson has a severe condition where if the ball meets his forehead clean on his head explodes which explains his reluctance to head the ball evidently.

  • 55 nut meg // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:10 AM

That set piece was years in the planning. Some of you lot have no idea just how many schoolboy games , Sunday morning football matches he had to attend ,out in all weathers to learn this plan A. Shame on you.

  • 56 Jail for Ashley // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:13 AM

I honestly can’t believe the pomp and hype that is going with this new era of trying to win something, using the headline to show us that they’re not all bad. If this new era means starting to try, wtf have we been doing for the last eight years.

  • 57 SUTTY1978 // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:14 AM

Broons, actually you must be right in that it was the Chronicle, here’s the Sun (opta) ratings
    Krul, 8
    Coloccini, 6
    Haidara, 7
    Mbemba, 7
    Taylor, 6
    Anita, 6
    Colback, 6
    Obertan, (Off – 69′)5
    Perez, (Off – 78′)6
    Wijnaldum, 6
    Mitrovic, (Off – 88′)7
    Cisse, (On – 88′) 5
    Thauvin, (On – 69′) 5
    Tiote, (On – 78′) 5

The much praised Colo & Saylor getting 6/10, thats no surprise really.

  • 58 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:17 AM

Didn’t Pardew himself say that he “inherited” the set play routines at Palace?

  • 59 SUTTY1978 // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:19 AM

Opta obviously gives good marks for passing backwards and sideways otherwise Anita & Colback would be much lower. Just looked at the scoring for the other two games as well. We have one player who has got 7/10 in all three games….. Haidara

  • 60 Mag52 // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:19 AM

Proving that with better players (ie Scott Dann) the tactic was right.
Who held the purse strings while AP was here ? It wasn’t AP was it ?

Apologies for not asking permission before addressing you in my last post. I’ll not make the same mistake again.
95% NUFC supporters – in your dreams mate.
There’s no way that 95% NUFC supporters are so lacking in football knowledge as to take the opposite view of virtually 100% of the football media, players, ex players, journalists, managers, ex managers regarding Pardew’s abilities as a manager.

  • 61 the broons // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:28 AM

Actually am the only one on the whole blog that likes Haidaira, Felt he had a good game vs man u too (apart from his poorly executed cross attempts) And yeah the Anita and Colback thing, I have a feeling their rating may be stem from distance covered as they never stopped running.

  • 62 SUTTY1978 // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:32 AM

Mag52, Pardew is a chancer, only a handful of fans give a rats arse what he’s up to now. Your like a dog with a rather old knackered bone that just wont let go. The football and some of the runs of results were horrible when he was here. I’m not convinced the results will be much better under McClaren but the football cannot be worse.
I think all talk of the demi god Pardew should be banned from here on.

  • 63 hibbit // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:36 AM

    The broons
Haidaira isn’t a premier league player, he’s not terrible he would just be more suitable for the championship along with quite a few of our squad. This is why we’re no where near as good as we should be, having to rely on under par player’s and fans like you that actually think they’re good. Quite funny really!
