At Steve McClaren’s press conference today for the League Cup tie against Northampton Town tomorrow night, he was asked at one point if he was expecting new arrivals or new departures from the clu over the next week.
The transfer window slams shut next Tuesday night at 6:00pm and there are reports we are after 26 year-old Monaco center-back Aymen Abdennour, and also Wolves England U21 striker Benik Afobe.
Benik Afobe – Newcastle said to be trying to sign this player
About half way through the press conference today Steve was asked if he was expecting a busy week with only one week to go in the summer transfer window – and this is how Steve answered that question:
“I’m just expecting a busy week because we have got three games in a week, and I’m sure if things happen then things will happen, and we’ll be ready to deal with that and any opportunities.”
“At the present moment, as I said on Friday, we are happy with what we got, so let’s keep our heads down and keep quiet.”
We may not get any new players in over the next eight days, but that answer is consistent with Newcastle being after some players who may or may not arrive by next Tuesday night.
And Newcastle will need to move some players out, either permanently or on loan, whether or not we bring new players in.
Those players include the likes of Sylvain Marveaux, Yoan Gouffran, Haris Vuckic and Gael Bigirimana, who don’t seem to have any future at Newcastle.
So there will be at least some transfers out before next Tuesday night.
It would be icing on the cake if we can get even one more good player through the door this summer.
Here’s where we stand so far on transfers in and out this summer – the fees are estimates.
[table “39” not found /]Newcastle have net spending at the moment of £47.8M

JIB, lets face it Colo has had one half decent showing in 2 years, he’s well past it. Cant believe some people have tried to use a solitary clean sheet as some kind of evidence that Colo is a colossus and the best defender of his generation. He’s crap, deal with it. McClarens comments saying they couldnt find anyone better than him to bring in shows how poor Carr is at scouting defenders rather than how good Colo is.
Anyone over 5’9? can outjump him and anyone quicker than Willo can turn him and put him on his arse.

Comment #8The Bigi transfer would irk me, had high hopes for the kid coming in and taking Tiote’s spot. Seems like he’s got a lot of potential not sure why he didn’t make it with us.

I’m confused as well as what happened to him. I read somewhere a while ago that he had some weird illness which is why he never played for rangers last season.

Comment #13mactoon on transfer activity – Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. !
We need one more proven centre half so we have 3 shoe ins for the two positions to cover for the inevitable injury. It happens every year and will happen this year. We also have to factor in the fact that while Colo did have a good game, to offer him a new contract, make him first choice and captain given how he performed over the whole of last season doesn’t make sense.

Comment #16My team for the cup tie:
Darlow
Janmaat-Lascelles-Colo-Haidara
Tiote-Colback
Obertan-SDJ-Aarons
Mitrovic
That allows for this team against arsenal:
Krul
Mbeba-Colo-Saylor-Haidara
Anita-Colback
Sissoko-Wiji-Perez
Mitro
Get Mitro 60 minutes and maybe a goal then bring on Toney. Colo for 60 and then bring on Dummett or Willo. On Saturday Cisse will be well rested and available to come on as an impact sub if needed. Maybe Merveaux or Bigi to get a run tomorrow?

Comment #18Does that user name say hail wor Ashley or am I cracking up? Honestly some people haven’t got an iglue! Hail him for what? Finally putting his hand in his pocket? Stripping all of our assets? Over the years selling our best players and failing to invest – leading to near relegation and near relegation? Rebranding St James’ Park to the sports direct arena and putting sports direct all over our stadium? Are we a plastic Geordie? Cos nee one with black and white blood would praise that son. Aye fair play to Him for finally investing. For bringing in a bit quality. A bit. That’s it! We still need a few quality signings and then a few squad playery! Why aye let’s praise him eh? A few injuries and we’re knackered man!

Comment #19Cisse won’t be involved with Galatasaray having 5 mil on the table for him, Lascelles needs game time big style and Thauvin needs to show where he’s at positionally.
