Newcastle Move In With Improved Second Bid For Striker

5:20 pm, Monday, August 24th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 112 Comments

There have been various reports over the last 24 hours that Wolves striker Benik Afobe is definitely on the radar screen of Newcastle United, and that Newcastle have lodged a second improved bid of £5M to try to sign the England U21 striker from Wolves.

Afobe was signed by Wolves in January for about £2M from Arsenal, but it seems Newcastle want to sign the Leyton-born youngster as soon as possible, and if we do there may be time to allow Papiss Cisse to move on before next Tuesday, when the summer transfer window closes.

Benik Afobe Burton+Albion+v+Wolverhampton+zB-CchUKV9rl

Benik Afobe – Newcastle make second bid for striker

There are other Premier League clubs interested in the striker, and he would be good value at £5M and has great potential, having done extremely well at Wolves this year.

The 6ft tall striker has scored 16 goals and had 5 assists in 25 appearances for the Molineux club, since he joined the club in January from Arsenal for a fee believed to be around £2M.

The youngster spent time while on Arsenal’s books on loan at Huddersfield, Bolton, Milwall, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons, and he played a total of 129 appearances with 25 goals and 17 assists – so he can create goals as well as score them.

We had assumed in our report on Sunday on Afobe that £5M would be a good deal for Newcastle and for Wolves too.

The sooner Newcastle can get a deal for the 22 year-old the more time it will give to transfer Papiss Cisse, who Turkish giants Galatasary are said to be after, but they will have to pay more than the £5M they are said to have offered for the 30 year-old striker.

It looks like 20 year-old Aleksandar Mitrovic will now become the starting striker for Newcastle this season, and if we lose Papiss, we still have Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere, and Benik Afobe can become our fourth striker for the season – if we can sign him.

There’s also young Adam Armstrong currently out on loan at Coventry, but Newcastle have a 24 hour recall clause in his loan contract – in case we need Adam before January.

We also have players like Gini Wijnaldum, Siem de Jong, Florian Thauvin and Rolando Aarons who can also score goals for Newcastle this season.

Comments welcome.

Why don’t we sell Rivvy to make space for him? Cisse can actually score goals.

They’ve all scored except Thauvin and that close encounter on Saturday maybe counts for one ?

    @9 thump

people actually want to buy cisse as he can score goals ! who would buy river ?

lets see if mitrovic can teach river something so we atleast have chance to sell him to make way for arma next season.

I’d have afobe as either an addition to the squad or as a rivière replacement, though I do have a bit of hope in rivière still. I shouldn’t really but there is something there. As for afobe, I think he just needs a bigger platform and we can offer him that.

  • 16 Belfast // Aug 24, 2015 at 5:41 PM

Good player this lad. Don’t see Wolves selling him though, especially not for 5 million. Ross McCormack 11 million, Jordan Rhodes valued at 14 million, Andre Gray 9 million ? Not a chance they’re selling him for 5 million.

  • 17 clinath@ed // Aug 24, 2015 at 5:46 PM

Talking to a friend of mine who is a Wolves fan. He rates this lad very highly, also looks likes he’s playing as though he wants, or is about, to be on his way out of Molinuex.

  • 18 RolandoOverhead // Aug 24, 2015 at 5:46 PM

Havent Wolves already turned down £6M for him?

  • 21 Our Toon // Aug 24, 2015 at 5:50 PM

Afobi can also play wide of a 3, perfect replacement for the french heskey aka Riviere.

As for Colo he’s shown he’s a good defender when the striker drops deep and has no intention of running in behind like Rooney did but come saturday against Giroud it’ll be a whole different challange, if that doesn’t work then he’ll face Walcott.

  • 22 SA Toon // Aug 24, 2015 at 5:54 PM

This Afobe looks like an interesting player, but you just never know whether he will be as successful in the Premier League. At this price it’s probably worth a punt though. Has anyone heard anything concrete on Abdennour? It was sounding quite promising, but has all gone very quiet.

  • 25 nightfa11 // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:00 PM

Mitro, perez, afobe, armstrong.. Thats a very good striking force..every pl club would be more than happy with that..and considering they are all kids..averaging 20 years?:-D ..impressive 🙂

    now lets sell some players..

  • 26 Reyantoon // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:08 PM

I think Benik Afobe is a good striker.I remember watched him one time while he was at Arsenal.
If i’m not mistaken,he is not bold,i think he just shaved his hair.I was wondered where did he left or why didn’t he be given a chance at Arsenal? Now mentioned he is at wolves,so will be good signing and good addition to the squad.
I wouldn’t mind if we let Cisse leave after watching Mitrovic’s contribution last Saturday.
What a signing Mitrovic will be for us 🙂

  • 27 Jib // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:09 PM

Anyone know Filip Djuricic he was on loan to Soton from Benfica for the 2nd half of last season.
At one time Benfica wanted €12.5 million for him but his price has dropped to €5 million and we have neen linked with him.
He’s a 6 foot tall attacking midfielder who can also play striker with 24 caps for Serbia.

  • 28 clinath@ed // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:15 PM

Belfast. The bid was from Norwich, the amount could well be hearsay though.

How did it go? All well?

  • 30 Jib // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:22 PM

Florian Thauvin has been explaining his (to them) surprising move after declining a transfer so many times.
He says once Bielsa left Marseilles and he realised that there would be a new coach he thought it may as well be with a new coach in the PL where the coaching is closer to the Argentinians style. The choice of NUFC was easy because we are symbolic of all that is good about English footy (his words).

  • 34 SA Toon // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:35 PM

aidytoon9 Don’t you think Mitro and Austin are maybe too similar – powerful and good in the air, but a little slow. I would like to see Mitro team up with Perez or Armstrong to match a bit of pace and guile with strength and power.

  • 38 ronaldo aarons // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:46 PM

Filip djuricic is a good and talented player but his issues are more to do with trying to get the best out of him consistently. Plus his best position is attacking mid and I don’t think we need to add there ATM.

Do you get Supersport MaximO ?

  • 40 OneAlanShearer // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:48 PM

The only way I can us really being in for afobe is as cisse’s replacement. I’d keep cisse as an impact player. But I do think we need striking options.

Mitrovic looks a really promising striker
Cisse is best used as an impact player
    Riviere is never a striker.

Perez I think schteve see’s as a winger not a main striker.

An injury to mitrovic and cisse leaves short. Plus if we intend to have a go at the cups we need strength in depth.

  • 41 SA Toon // Aug 24, 2015 at 6:58 PM

  • 42 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 24, 2015 at 7:01 PM

We still need a centre back , a right back , a left back , a striker , a defensive midfielder and a creative midfielder and if being greedy another right winger !!

Still plenty of work to do but it will not be done all in the one window and probably not without getting rid of deadwood

Would not surprise me at all if we have no more incoming but Williamson , Gouffran etc either get sold or go out on loan

Interesting game. I want to see Benteke, in particular how much change he gets out of the defenders. Hopefully Mitro will be a similar prospect for them at the weekend. Actually I mean I hope they all kick each other to bits tonight and soften each other up for us to follow.

  • 57 will die for the toon army // Aug 24, 2015 at 7:54 PM

Mcca is right to say we have a big squad after the impressive performance from Taylor. Taylor was always a good player injuries is his problem.

Willo is an experienced EPL player and good back up. He can play the likes of the Bottom 12 teams.

On the money side of things if Colo gets back to his best then we keep the CB money.

I’m surprised alot of dead wood hasn’t been cleared out by now.

  • 60 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 24, 2015 at 7:59 PM

Would quite like us to keep the same back 4 to keep building a bit more of an understanding Arsenal will be tough they have everything that we struggle against which is Giroud in the air and Sanchez , Ozil and Carzorla making runs in behind

But they are not that great at the back and if you attack them so if we are brave we could get a result in fact I wish we were a little bit more attacking at Old Trafford as we would probably have took the points there as well

  • 61 SA Toon // Aug 24, 2015 at 8:02 PM

Sorry, was just having dinner. I’m not sure what the Supersport bouquet costs as I get it as part of a general news and entertainment package with about 100 channels. Supersport has 10 sports channels and very good EPL coverage. The Arsenal – Liverpool game is live on SS3 and Maximo (with Portuguese commentary) but they have 5 live games on Saturdays and all the Sunday and Monday games. Unfortunately they’re not televising tomorrow nights game though. Does anyone know where we can watch it live?

just wait until we play Arsenal, then decide if you want to keep the same back four. We did work hard as a team but we only had 30% possession against a under par Man u, any pacey side will show us for what we are, which is a club that has been so far run down it will take year’s to recover from.

Swapping a fourth in line striker (Afobe) for a first/second in line ( Cisse) is not a good idea in my humble opinion.

  • 70 SA Toon // Aug 24, 2015 at 8:17 PM

Not sure about Marveaux as I haven’t seen enough of him recently, but I can’t agree about Williamson. He needs to make way for someone who has more pace and can jump. In my view he unsettles the whole back line.

  • 71 aidytoon9 // Aug 24, 2015 at 8:22 PM

Tough one call tomorrow’s line up.

    Something like

    Janmaat, Lascelles, Colo, Haidara
    Wijnaldum, Tiote
    Thauvin, De Jong, Aarons

Krul, Mbemba, Dummett, Colback, Kemen, Obertan, Perez

Gives a couple of players like Darlow and Lascelles a chance to impress and Tiote to get some match sharpness whilst not unsettling the side too much.

  • 74 will die for the toon army // Aug 24, 2015 at 8:28 PM

Ian Cathro shld find an attacking formula coz we havent yet got one. Mcca is doing his job of the defensive work. Let me hop Janmaat red card is a blessing.

Taylor was the beast we were missing in that back 4. He does his crazy blocks and everyone follows.

  • 75 SA Toon // Aug 24, 2015 at 8:29 PM

agreed, Arsenal look there for the taking here.

Obviously they will have all the ball against us but if we press them in certain areas and have players like wijnaldum and sissoko who can counter with pace, not to mention mitrovic who will hopefully bully their backline.

But of course there is the Northampton game first before that.

For me saylor would be the next john terry if he could stay fit for more than two week but he cant so for me you can’t count him in any first choice back 4, playing together for long periods is what makes a defence great, how many games did Bruce and palllister miss??

  • 92 toon kk // Aug 24, 2015 at 9:17 PM

Arsenal will rip us apart ffs, you’d think that we’d just beaten Real Madrid the way most are taking. We only had 30% of the possession not one shot on target and spent most of the game held in our own half, don’t get me wrong we worked very hard to keep a clean sheet which was great to see. But we will struggle this season, we are so far behind most premier league clubs it’s unbelievable.

Toon kk, we was also able to play a team that had spent more on one player (di Maria) than we have on probably our whole team and been our most successful summer yet, and they still managed to write him off as a flop.. We should be judged on games such as Swansea (which I know we flopped) and teams like Southampton Tottenham Everton etc. Where still a mid table team and will take 2-3 years of this sort of investment at least to get anywhere near the top 5/6

  • 94 toonicle // Aug 24, 2015 at 9:41 PM

Aarons is the one that needs to start more than anyone, needs to get into the team because he can be a huge asset. Him and Thauvin will be awesome on the wings feeding Mitro.

“taylor would be the next John Terry if he could stay fit”

I’ll have to keep a look out for your name in the future see if you come out with any other remarkable quotes.

  • 96 the broons // Aug 24, 2015 at 9:42 PM

couldn’t agree more, I hope Mcclaren sees soon that Aarons has potentially the greatest service given for Mitrovic.

  • 97 gaz 44 // Aug 24, 2015 at 9:45 PM

Bit tongue in cheek maybe but he has the same attribues not the quickest but not many beat him in air even though not the tallest, will put his body on the line for the team and its a big if , john terry could be as good as Saylor if he learnt the theatrics of an handball in the box. ?

  • 98 gaz 44 // Aug 24, 2015 at 9:49 PM

And regaurding Aarons I hope I’m wrong but I think his attribute that links him most to sterling may be the… I’m bigger than this club syndrome,

I agree Taylor has as big as a heart as Terry if not bigger.

But as for overall play as a defender? Terry lightyears ahead.

Well, I hope we get the Arsenal of the first half and not the second. Great 0-0 match to watch.
Team selection will be critical, cannot afford to carry anyone. Grafters with talent required come Saturday..

  • 101 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 24, 2015 at 9:56 PM

Does anyone think its the contract situation that is why Aarons is not getting game time? Fitness ? Or lack of defensive discipline?

I actually think it might be because of the defensive side of his game I could see him starting against West Ham and Watford where he will be expected to help us dominate

  • 102 calvinzolamakongo // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:04 PM

People jeep going on bout we had 30% pocession but in the first half it was alot closer but yes in the 2nd half they had the majority but what do u expect from a top 4 side trying to get the winning goal? As for tge no shots on target we nearly scored three times mits header perez cms wide of post and thauvin mm’s from poking the ball in all they had was hernandez 1 on 1 and smallings half header onto anita on the post ppl read into stats far too much we will start digging into perez soon coz he got a 4 in the sun lol

  • 103 SPRINGY // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:05 PM

i think ya right about his defensive side…think he’s told to work at sure he mentions it in one of magpie 24/7 vids….also in pre-season he did give the ball away in a few dangerous areas

  • 104 SPRINGY // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:08 PM

did the sun really give him a 4!…..who was doin the scores mr magoo!!!…..what a joke

  • 105 sing in the corner // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:09 PM

Yeah mate, did a bit of reading about the game – Trelford was locked in the dressing room til about midnight to save him fro a mob! He was interviewed a while after the game and defended all the decisions… Seemed to say he spotted a raised arm in a challenge by Jeff Clarke in the build up to Varadi’s goal. I hadn’t remembered Brighton went all the way to the semis after beating us one nil. We’re due a bit of karma / luck in the cups eh? 🙂

  • 106 SPRINGY // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:10 PM

the only one who should of got a 4 was the ref coz he was to bloody spineless to book at least 2 manutd players for diving and a couple more for dodgy tackles

  • 107 1949BH PROUDTOBEAGEORDIE // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:13 PM

sa toon at 61 just back from sa where i paid for package to watch first 2 ncle games .it cost 300 rand per month. at 70 marv is injured but guingamp took double the points when he was out with hamstring 20 from ten games as against 29 from 28 when playing.

  • 108 toon kk // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:16 PM

To be honest we have a decent side, which lacks in certain areas, we will take time to gel and improve providing Mash doesn’t keep selling our best players. For me we lack pace and turn into headless chickens when we come up against it, janmaat couldn’t cope against Swansea and took the easy root oout.
I was pleased to see Mitrovic can head a ball something we’ve been crying out for also he managed to play a game without getting booked.

  • 109 will die for the toon army // Aug 24, 2015 at 10:17 PM

I thinl all the players that have played ahead of him are better than him. He might even miss out on the bench if Sissoko comes back.

Obertan is more experienced. On and off but I think is ahead of him. If Obertan is staying. I wld send him to loan. But he shld first get his chance like Perez to start a game. if Sissoko is still injured. start out:

    But Mcca iz going for:
    Thauvin. ……….Wijnaldum………..Perez
    ………………. ……Mitrovic

  • 110 ashleysmate // Aug 25, 2015 at 12:26 AM

Why do we seem hell bent on getting rid of Papiss? Even when he’s crocked he still scores goals . I think he would be a great squad player and also he seems a bloody good bloke. …so there

  • 111 brighter // Aug 25, 2015 at 8:40 AM

    > if we do there may be time to allow Papiss Cisse to move on before next Tuesday

    Ha?? It’s absolutely nonsense.

  • 112 Sav // Aug 25, 2015 at 9:59 AM

Mitrovic, Riviere and Afobe have scored no Premiere league goals. Zero, Nix, None.
The only one of the strikers Ed you want us to rely on who has scored is Perez, who bagged 7. And you would be happy to see Cisse sold for 5 million squids? Isn’t that exactly what the Mashley regime has always done – run this club like a corner shop? Where is the great new dawn or the sea change in that?
In Mashley’s West Ham speech he only said he wasn’t leaving until we won something. He didn’t say anything about going all out to do that or that if we won something he would leave. With the amount of money about to be poured down the club’s throat, I’m not surprised. Selling a fit Cisse for a development player is one sure way we won’t win anything.
