There have been various reports over the last 24 hours that Wolves striker Benik Afobe is definitely on the radar screen of Newcastle United, and that Newcastle have lodged a second improved bid of £5M to try to sign the England U21 striker from Wolves.
Afobe was signed by Wolves in January for about £2M from Arsenal, but it seems Newcastle want to sign the Leyton-born youngster as soon as possible, and if we do there may be time to allow Papiss Cisse to move on before next Tuesday, when the summer transfer window closes.
Benik Afobe – Newcastle make second bid for striker
There are other Premier League clubs interested in the striker, and he would be good value at £5M and has great potential, having done extremely well at Wolves this year.
The 6ft tall striker has scored 16 goals and had 5 assists in 25 appearances for the Molineux club, since he joined the club in January from Arsenal for a fee believed to be around £2M.
The youngster spent time while on Arsenal’s books on loan at Huddersfield, Bolton, Milwall, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons, and he played a total of 129 appearances with 25 goals and 17 assists – so he can create goals as well as score them.
We had assumed in our report on Sunday on Afobe that £5M would be a good deal for Newcastle and for Wolves too.
The sooner Newcastle can get a deal for the 22 year-old the more time it will give to transfer Papiss Cisse, who Turkish giants Galatasary are said to be after, but they will have to pay more than the £5M they are said to have offered for the 30 year-old striker.
It looks like 20 year-old Aleksandar Mitrovic will now become the starting striker for Newcastle this season, and if we lose Papiss, we still have Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere, and Benik Afobe can become our fourth striker for the season – if we can sign him.
There’s also young Adam Armstrong currently out on loan at Coventry, but Newcastle have a 24 hour recall clause in his loan contract – in case we need Adam before January.
We also have players like Gini Wijnaldum, Siem de Jong, Florian Thauvin and Rolando Aarons who can also score goals for Newcastle this season.
