Poll – Can Magpies Advance In League Cup Against Northampton?

8:54 am, Monday, August 24th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 10 Comments

Tomorrow night is the first time head coach Steve McClaren will get a chance to manage Newcastle in a cup competition, and it’s the League Cup second round home tie against Football League Two club Northampton Town.

Newcastle will be expected to win this game, but these games are never as easy as they appear on paper.

This is the cup that Newcastle have the most chance of winning this season, and for the first time under Mike Ashley the stated intent this season is to try to win something.

So while Steve McClaren will give some good fringe players a start in this game, we have to field a good side that can win and hopefully win fairly comfortably.

We would expect players like Karl Darlow, Jamaal Lascelles, Siem de Jong, Rolando Aarons, Papiss Cisse and Florian Thauvin to make starts in this game, but the bench will need to be strong to ensure we progress in the competition tomorrow night.

We could also see former Northampton Town striker Ivan Toney on the bench for this game, and he could get a run out in the second half.

Northampton have 6 points from their four league games with two wins, and they are 10th of 24 clubs in the League Two table, after losing 2-0 at home to Plymouth on Saturday.

But this game could be a banana skin, and we cannot have any let-downs after the good performance at Old Trafford on Saturday.

I’ve selected win but I’m with Hibbit on this one.

I think he should rest maybe 3/4 players only. A complete overhaul of the squad will likely see us lose.

With players like mitrovic and colo not having pre season or match starts we need to include them

There are a couple of players who need minutes in their legs to be ready for the PL games coming up

Big difference right now is that the quality of players we could bring in outside of the starting 11 from the weekend is much higher than last year.

Aarons, Cisse, SDJ, Thauvin, Tiote, Dummett etc wouldnt have been 2nd choice last year so even if we make some changes we still have the strength in depth to have enough quality out there.

I am not a fan of Ben Arfa but for those that are you’ll just love- Ian Hawkey’s article- ” Ben Arfa’s dazzling return puts him on road to redemption”.
It’s in Total Football in today’s Daily Telegraph.

    Welshie from previous
I voted against buying a defender

A Tunisian who has never played in the PL who in Ligue1 only plays 20 games a season
A lad we have bought from Forest who is an inch taller also never played in the PL but was fast tracked by the England U17 U19 and U21 setups and is as fit as a lop.

    It’s a no brainer

There is no ‘draw’ effectively in the League Cup, it gets played to the end in the first game. No replays.

    Re: danmuamua
I’d be more than happy if SM fielded the team you suggested. Pretty strong and play the same formation as the first team.
    3-0 win
