Head coach Steve McClaren has just named his side for the second round tie of the League Cup against Northampton Town and he has made some big changes to the side.

Steve McClaren has made 9 changes from the side that started at Old Trafford on Saturday, and as expected Janmaat, Lascelles and Williamson are in the back four.

Newcastle: Darlow, Janmaat, Lascelles, Williamson, Haidara, Tiote, Gouffran, Aarons, de Jong, Thauvin, Perez
Subs: Elliot, Dummett, Mbemba, Colback, Wijnaldum, Toney, Mitrovic

Only Haidara and Perez also started the game on Saturday, so it’s really the second team that is playing against  Northampton tonight, although it still looks a strong side.

It looks like Tiote and Gouffran will be the holding midfielders and Thauvin also starts his first game for Newcastle.

Northampton born goalkeeper Karl Darlow as expected will make his debut for Newcastle tonight – against his home town team.

The bench is strong, and former Northampton striker Ivan Toney is a sub tonight, and maybe he could make his debut tonight – depending on how the game goes.

This is what Steve McClaren has said about tonight’s game:

“We will put our strongest possible team out, taking into account what happened on Saturday, taking into account the game this weekend and taking into account that we have a very good squad.”

“Tuesday’s team will be strong enough and good enough to win the game. Our attitude has to be right, though.” “Northampton are a good team,”

“We’ve been watching them, and they are physical, strong, and put in lots of crosses.”

“Any team on their day can beat anybody, no matter what division. And if we are not right, or don’t do it right, Northampton are a team who can hurt us.”

“They can play with freedom, relaxation, and every minute they get by and every tackle they win will be a boost to them. We must make sure we don’t give them that.”

An overwhelming parentage think we will win this game tonight.
