9 Changes – Darlow, Williamson Aarons, Gouffran, Thauvin Start

nufc emblemNorthampton Town _FC_logo

Head coach Steve McClaren has just named his side for the second round tie of the League Cup against Northampton Town and he has made some big changes to the side.

Steve McClaren has made 9 changes from the side that started at Old Trafford on Saturday, and as expected Janmaat, Lascelles and Williamson are in the back four.

Newcastle: Darlow, Janmaat, Lascelles, Williamson, Haidara, Tiote, Gouffran, Aarons, de Jong, Thauvin, Perez
Subs: Elliot, Dummett, Mbemba, Colback, Wijnaldum, Toney, Mitrovic

Only Haidara and Perez also started the game on Saturday, so it’s really the second team that is playing against  Northampton tonight, although it still looks a strong side.

It looks like Tiote and Gouffran will be the holding midfielders and Thauvin also starts his first game for Newcastle.

Northampton born goalkeeper Karl Darlow as expected will make his debut for Newcastle tonight – against his home town team.

The bench is strong, and former Northampton striker Ivan Toney is a sub tonight, and maybe he could make his debut tonight – depending on how the game goes.

This is what Steve McClaren has said about tonight’s game:

“We will put our strongest possible team out, taking into account what happened on Saturday, taking into account the game this weekend and taking into account that we have a very good squad.”

“Tuesday’s team will be strong enough and good enough to win the game. Our attitude has to be right, though.” “Northampton are a good team,”

“We’ve been watching them, and they are physical, strong, and put in lots of crosses.”

“Any team on their day can beat anybody, no matter what division. And if we are not right, or don’t do it right, Northampton are a team who can hurt us.”

“They can play with freedom, relaxation, and every minute they get by and every tackle they win will be a boost to them. We must make sure we don’t give them that.”

An overwhelming parentage think we will win this game tonight.

Wow… De Jong!? Wince every time he twists, turns or takes a tackle. Nice to have him out on the pitch tonight. Aarons Perez and Thauvin. No shortage of skill and youthful exuberance tonight then?

    Ashley IN!

Ashley’s reign will bring us at least 1 trophy within the next few years, all organically funded, being one of the best run clubs.

He will reap what he has sown after riding out some cold harsh winters in exile, the Geordie nation will embrace him once more and those that don’t will see their lives unravel, their friends and family disown them and the only job on offer a zero hours contract at Sports Direct, for eternity..

Decent team,, glad to see thauvin and aarons start,, if gouffran is going to play then why not as striker as thts where he has played most before us,, how can anyone see him as a cm never mind a holding cm…. Beggars belief,, I actually drove past th Northampton team this morning walking along the road believe it or not not far from the marriot at th race course,, walking away as to head to tht dog grooming place nxt to vosa haha,, no idea where they were going I did however give them a beep and proceeded to make 5 nil with my hands they jus waved and laffed.. Doubt you will see arsenal walking along there this weekend

Surely he could have played Cisse or Mitro? They’ve only had 1.5 games each and neither will play 90 mins against Arsenal.
Is Gouffy playing Def Mid or Perez? He played Perez there in preseason. What a crappy all round selection this is. Ginger Pardew strikes again.

I personally would rather give kemen a start rather than gouffran especially if he is playing next to tiote. No qualms about the rest of the team. I would be interested to see which side aarons and thauvin are, hope aarons is on the left.

If they dont do well, who will the Ginger Pardew decide to scapegoat? The young players like Aarons no doubt instead of the senior crap players like Gouffy & Willo.

Gouffran is a strange choice, perfect chance to give Kemen a game. The biggest disappoint for all of us is that Perez is playing amd obertan isn’t. This means Obertan will start against Arsenal!!

Ginger Pardew, same traits – making too many changes, playing players out of position, favouring “senior players” over talented younger players.

if goofy is played as a striker then i have no probs what so ever of him playing as tbf he has not had a proper bash at it and when he was played there he looked very good tbh.

and it was the position he was signed for and that he had played in his career.

he still imo is a better striker than river but pard’s never see him that way.

    Now then young Chancel

    Hope you’re on the mend.

Don’t despair at Willo’s inclusion in the starting line-up – McC’s got no choice really as he’s hardly gonna risk Mbemba and Taylor in particular ahead of the Arsenal game.

And, he’s putting Willo, Gouffran and others in the shop window so let’s hope they impress whoever’s watching them!

If that line-up can’t beat Northampton then pity help us. I think that McC’ll have the lads better prepared and gee’d up than Carver ever could’ve done so (and my head’s on the block), tonight should be a formality….. I hope.

Anyway, keep smiling bonny lad 🙂

Gouffran is a strange choice unless McClaren has seen something that Carver and Pardew hadn’t.

I’m reserving judgement as McClaren is getting the best out of Anita which Pardew and Carver never did.
