McClaren – We Will Play Our Strongest Possible Team

3:05 pm, Tuesday, August 25th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 92 Comments

When John Carver took over the team at the end of December, when it was obvious that Alan Pardew was going to sign for Crystal Palace, he said before the FA Cup 3rd round at Leicester City in early January, that he would play Newcastle’s strongest side possible.

John then fielded a very weak side and we lost 1-0, and his credibility with fans took a hit, and let’s just say things got a lot worse after that.

daryl janmaat west ham

Daryl Janmaat – should start tonight

Steve McClaren says he will play a strong side tonight against Northampton Town, and we expect to see a number of our good subs starting tonight – players like Siem de Jong, Mike Williamson, Rolando Aarons and Papiss Cisse.

Daryl Janmaat should also get  a start, after being suspended for the game at Old Trafford on Saturday.

This is what Steve said yesterday about the game tonight:

“The cups can be a great boost for you,” “It’s another game and nobody in football wants to lose a football match.”

“We will put our strongest possible team out, taking into account what happened on Saturday, taking into account the game this weekend and taking into account that we have a very good squad.”

“Tuesday’s team will be strong enough and good enough to win the game. Our attitude has to be right, though.”

“Northampton are a good team.” “We’ve been watching them, and they are physical, strong, and put in lots of crosses.” “Any team on their day can beat anybody, no matter what division.”

“And if we are not right, or don’t do it right, Northampton are a team who can hurt us.” “They can play with freedom, relaxation, and every minute they get by and every tackle they win will be a boost to them. We must make sure we don’t give them that.”

“In the first round of the Capital One Cup, you have to make sure you do a professional job.”

The bottom line tonight is to win the game and that’s certainly what fans expect – given the poll we have put out for the game.

A win would be great tonight,  and then we can see f we can make it two wins in a row at home to Arsenal on Saturday in the early kick-off game.

    So our team will be
    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Haidara
    Colback Anita
    Thauvin Wini Perez

Unless of course we arent playing our strongest team

  • 2 cyprus // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:09 PM

It bothers me that we are so predictable to opponents: we camp in our half, hoping not to concede. We hardly see the ball,so when we get it it’s easy to lose it.

Look what we did in our first game vs. Southampton. We attacked, almost shocked them. Then, we settled for our regular draw, as we tired admittedly.

  • 3 cyprus // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:11 PM

from previous. All those players can be accommodated. Give them each a half, 70-75′ to Thauvin.
Sissoko a full game as he and Colback have the big engines and won’t give up when Arsenal are most ready to pounce.

  • 4 SPRINGY // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:11 PM

im one of those people whos put perez in the side tonight….but in reading some of the comments they bring up good points about him playin sat and it may effect his game.. so startin thauvin right mid is props a more sensible option to be fair….would still start with mitro to try and get him scoring soon as possible

  • 5 Yorkshire Magpie // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:16 PM

he said our “strongest possible team” not our strongest team, we cant play the same 11 every game, we need to give players like Arons and De jong game time so they can push for a first team place. so WWSBRD stop with the stupid comments

  • 6 SPRINGY // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:20 PM

    yorkshire mag
    your team for tonight?

  • 7 cyprus // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:20 PM

Not too bothered vs.Northampton. They lost their last two games without even scoring. Surely, surely, this should be a good training session.

I’d play Mitro as well as he needs to find the net. Perez, rest, though he does seem tireless. He should be a permanent team member somehow and, when we decide to play more attacking football, a threat for goals.

  • 8 SPRINGY // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:24 PM

anyone think perez will start against arsenal if sissoko fit?…maybe in place of obertan

  • 9 Yorkshire Magpie // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:24 PM

    I would go

Janmat, Willo, Lascells, Dummet (if fit)
    Tiote, Colback
    obertan, De jong, Arons

  • 10 Tsunki // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:27 PM

Yorkshire mag yep exactly strongest ” possible” i.e. one that does not compromise the strongest possible team we need to play Arsenal.

  • 11 WWSBRD // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:27 PM

True but I was mainly talking starting the game. I think a lot depends on Sissokos fitness for Arsenal

    Yorkshire Magpie
In what way is that team not possible?
Aarons and de Jong may need game time but that doesnt make them stronger as a player

McClaren has no intention of playing our strongest team and nor should he against Northampton. It was more a comment on what Ed decided to pick out of the comments so hakuna your tatas

  • 12 Yorkshire Magpie // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:27 PM

Steve might even try his preferred 433 formations tonight?

  • 13 jayphoto // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:27 PM

thought he’d already confirmed Siem De Jong will play??
Think Gini, Colback and Anita have covered a lot of miles already in the first 3 games and against Arsenal (who have no midweek game) will probably concede more.
Id start De Jong behind Mitrovic. Tiote and possibly anita in midfield with Thauvin and Aarons wide.
Would go Darlow in goal maybe, with Taylor, Mbemba and Haidara across the back 4.

  • 14 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:29 PM

    My team for tonight

    Janmaat s.taylor jamal dummet
    Tioti bigi
    Thauvin de jong arrons

I would have a strong bench
Krul colo mbemba anita wijnaldum perez mitrovic.
Possibly Oliver kemen if he can be squeezed in on the bench. Try giving him an appearance if I could.

  • 15 hibbit // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:29 PM

McLaren needs a win to keep the fans onside with a win we get a bit of a buzz get knocked out the mood will change very quickly………… 93 % think we will win no pressure there then

  • 16 SPRINGY // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:30 PM

i prefer wide midfielders to play left foot left side and right foot right it seems more balanced and so they can cross without checkin bad inside as believe it really slows the flow the attack and gives the advantage to defenders rather than attack…..just a personnel preference ano u cant always play that way but with mitro and cisse it could help there game

  • 17 Yorkshire Magpie // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:32 PM

    WWSBRD your not understanding,

“We will put our strongest possible team” POSSIBLE meaning that some players are not available to tiredness or to keep them fit for Saturday

  • 18 Tsunki // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:32 PM

Oh. Didn’t see Yorkshire mags little qualifier at the end. Naughty Yorkshire mag. 🙁

  • 20 JAMSHA // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:36 PM

    any stream link for tonight?

  • 21 Slank // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:36 PM

    Players that should play are:

De Jong and Aarons because they haven’t featured yet.

Mitrovic because he needs to score, to get off the mark.

Tiote because he has had very little game time and is rusty.

Thauvin because he needs to experience the English league.

Toney because he would be desperate to score against his old club.

Lascelles because he hasn’t featured yet.

Not sure about Williamson and Gouffran as they maybe not for the long term.

Not sure about Dummitt as he may still be injured or recovering. Same applies to Sissoko.

  • 22 SPRINGY // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:38 PM

for me there is a few that must start for game time…….dejong aarons tiote janmaat coz they’ve either look like they needed it the games they’ve played or have’nt played any

  • 28 SPRINGY // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:43 PM

dont no what happened to goofy….when he first came he never really looked like scoring loads but looked decent and grafted really hard but last year was woefully crap tbh

apparently a saudi arabian stream has it

  • 30 WWSBRD // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:44 PM

Hmm rumour I heard may have been incorrect then…or maybe just premature

  • 31 DaraghL // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:44 PM

While I don’t agree with how Yorkshire said it I do agree with his point.

Not all players who played on Saturday will be available especially if they are required again next Saturday.

They are therefore not possible selections.

That would be great, hope there is a stream, I do enjoy radio commentary from time to time, but never if the option of watching it is there of course.

    Anyone else know of streams?

  • 36 Slank // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:48 PM

    My team therefore:

    Janmaat – Lascelles – Colo – Haidara
    Aarons – Perez – Thauvin
    De Jong

I would play Perez in central midfield as he tackles, harries and hassles, has pace together with excellent close quarter ball control to get past most close marking.

I would play De Jong further up the field as he hasn’t got what Perez has but can see a pass and an opportunity and would be excellent support to the more mobile Mitrovic, Aarons and Thauvin.

  • 37 WWSBRD // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:50 PM

Maybe so mate but I heard his family had relocated back to France and it was around the time that photo of him at the airport was doing the rounds, who knows

I doubt McClaren has any intention of playing him considering he is yet to make the bench so far

  • 38 Our Toon // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:54 PM

Absolutely bonkers playing our best XI against Northampton. What if mitrovic or Wijnaldum get injured and they miss 2 or 3 months or longer.. All because we feared Northampton.

    Janmaat, Laschelles, saylor/willo, Dummett
    Tiote, Kemen
    Obertan, SDJ, Aarons

Bench should have the likes of mitrovic and Wij just in case they are needed. Obertan starts because I don’t want to see him play against Arsenal and Perez should be kept fresh for that game

  • 39 SPRINGY // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:55 PM

its lookin likely he’ll be away…there might b something going on behind the scenes to let him go if we get another player in….would b strange for his family to go on hol so soon after the end of season break so maybe that relocation story has some legs to it

  • 40 SA Toon // Aug 25, 2015 at 3:59 PM

Should be a good run out tonight. I fancy Mitro will open his account, and a good opportunity for de Jong and Aarons to stake a claim. I would also play Obertan as Perez would start on Saturday if it was up to me. Thauvin must get a bit of a run and Tiote also needs to get some game time under his belt. I am hoping Anita and Wijnaldum will get a rest and Sissoko won’t be risked with his groin strain. Janmaat missed Man U and should get a run while Colo must get a rest.

  • 41 BeeGuy // Aug 25, 2015 at 4:03 PM

No TV tonight. So will one of you techno savvy guys please feed the radio broadcast into UStream so the rest of us NUFC fans around the world can hear the match? Much thanks in advance!

  • 42 Slank // Aug 25, 2015 at 4:06 PM

    WWSBRD @ 26

‘..Hasnt Goofy pretty much left Newcastle?..’

Hope so. I see a late flurry of activity on the final day of the transfer window with Goofy, Williamson, Ferguson and Vuckic departing. Maybe Obertan too but McClaren has picked already so not so sure.

My bones tell me that we may see a late arrival, perhaps a defender but I see that Dunk has dunked it and extended his contract with Brighton. Dick Van Dyke’s future may be decided tonight if Celtic lose against Malmo but Southampton seem to be sniffing around.

Fergy is gone mate, Millwall on loan

I can see us losing a fre fringe players not sure we will see anymore incomings until Jan at the earliest though, happy to be proved wrong though

  • 47 jayphoto // Aug 25, 2015 at 4:31 PM

Think Obertan will get more gametime this season than his other seasons! Don’t think he’ll be first 11 but the fact that he can play both flanks means he’ll probably be a useful back up on the subs bench!
He wasn’t much cop on Saturday, knew he wouldn’t be as the pressure would be high but he was one of the better performers against Swansea and Southampton

  • 48 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 25, 2015 at 4:42 PM

  • 50 JDdubai // Aug 25, 2015 at 4:44 PM

Wouldnt start with Mitrovic, he looked totally shattered vs Man U, as much as it would be nice to get him a goal id rather he was fully recovered for Arsenal than risk an injury midweek.

Mitrovic to get 20 mins, thauvin and SDJ 70.

  • 51 beefman13 // Aug 25, 2015 at 4:57 PM

The best goal ever if your a Toon supporter imo, Supermacs second v Burnley, semi final FA Cup 1974, terrific game as well, the brilliant meant clearance by Tudor, the magical ball by Hibbit and Supermac at his magnificent best.

Surely Tiote, De Jong and Aarons have to start tonight.
It’s only logical to start breaking them in and this is our best opportunity to do so.
If he chooses to field the rest as he did saturday then fair enough as he will be able to judge the fitness of the squad better than all of us.

I’ve done the sensible thing and bought a ticket, so I’m guaranteed to see the game. 🙂 When Macca says the strongest team possible, he’s factoring in the Arsenal game and won’t even be considering the first eleven all playing. To be honest, for the first time in ages, we can play a weakened team and still play a strong side – strong enough to beat Northampton for sure. I’d like to see Mitrovic play some part, as a goal or two can do him no harm. Thauvin could use a run out too. I’m actually prepared to trust Macca to pick his strongest possible side available without feeling nervous. He wants us to win a cup and he knows what he’s doing.

  • 82 Moonraker15 // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:32 PM

Let’s not be playing silly games! I want to see a strong team that can win but we have to remember we are playing a very good Arsenal team at the weekend, who incidentally have something to prove as they are getting a lot of stick at the moment.

It could be a good time to play Arsenal or it could be a bad time, but I think if we don’t beat Northampton we won’t beat Arsenal as confidence is the key. However, if we win tonight I believe we beat Arsenal.

If we lose both games we’re in crisis! Haha what a great game football is !

Ashley’s reign will bring us at least 1 trophy within the next few years, all organically funded, being one of the best run clubs.

He will reap what he has sown after riding out some cold harsh winters in exile, the Geordie nation will embrace him once more and those that don’t will see their lives unravel, their friends and family disown them and the only job on offer a zero hours contract at Sports Direct, for eternity.

  • 85 LGFUAD21 // Aug 25, 2015 at 6:43 PM

It’ll be a cracking signing for Villa if they get Llajic

He didnt play for United but they were very interested. They turned him down to sign someone else (cant remember who but I think they flopped)
