McClaren – We Will Play Our Strongest Possible Team

When John Carver took over the team at the end of December, when it was obvious that Alan Pardew was going to sign for Crystal Palace, he said before the FA Cup 3rd round at Leicester City in early January, that he would play Newcastle’s strongest side possible.

John then fielded a very weak side and we lost 1-0, and his credibility with fans took a hit, and let’s just say things got a lot worse after that.

Daryl Janmaat – should start tonight

Steve McClaren says he will play a strong side tonight against Northampton Town, and we expect to see a number of our good subs starting tonight – players like Siem de Jong, Mike Williamson, Rolando Aarons and Papiss Cisse.

Daryl Janmaat should also get  a start, after being suspended for the game at Old Trafford on Saturday.

This is what Steve said yesterday about the game tonight:

“The cups can be a great boost for you,” “It’s another game and nobody in football wants to lose a football match.”

“We will put our strongest possible team out, taking into account what happened on Saturday, taking into account the game this weekend and taking into account that we have a very good squad.”

“Tuesday’s team will be strong enough and good enough to win the game. Our attitude has to be right, though.”

“Northampton are a good team.” “We’ve been watching them, and they are physical, strong, and put in lots of crosses.” “Any team on their day can beat anybody, no matter what division.”

“And if we are not right, or don’t do it right, Northampton are a team who can hurt us.” “They can play with freedom, relaxation, and every minute they get by and every tackle they win will be a boost to them. We must make sure we don’t give them that.”

“In the first round of the Capital One Cup, you have to make sure you do a professional job.”

The bottom line tonight is to win the game and that’s certainly what fans expect – given the poll we have put out for the game.

A win would be great tonight,  and then we can see f we can make it two wins in a row at home to Arsenal on Saturday in the early kick-off game.

It bothers me that we are so predictable to opponents: we camp in our half, hoping not to concede. We hardly see the ball,so when we get it it’s easy to lose it.

Look what we did in our first game vs. Southampton. We attacked, almost shocked them. Then, we settled for our regular draw, as we tired admittedly.

    W,
from previous. All those players can be accommodated. Give them each a half, 70-75′ to Thauvin.
Sissoko a full game as he and Colback have the big engines and won’t give up when Arsenal are most ready to pounce.

im one of those people whos put perez in the side tonight….but in reading some of the comments they bring up good points about him playin sat and it may effect his game.. so startin thauvin right mid is props a more sensible option to be fair….would still start with mitro to try and get him scoring soon as possible

he said our “strongest possible team” not our strongest team, we cant play the same 11 every game, we need to give players like Arons and De jong game time so they can push for a first team place. so WWSBRD stop with the stupid comments

Not too bothered vs.Northampton. They lost their last two games without even scoring. Surely, surely, this should be a good training session.

I’d play Mitro as well as he needs to find the net. Perez, rest, though he does seem tireless. He should be a permanent team member somehow and, when we decide to play more attacking football, a threat for goals.

Yorkshire mag yep exactly strongest ” possible” i.e. one that does not compromise the strongest possible team we need to play Arsenal.

True but I was mainly talking starting the game. I think a lot depends on Sissokos fitness for Arsenal

    Yorkshire Magpie
In what way is that team not possible?
Aarons and de Jong may need game time but that doesnt make them stronger as a player

McClaren has no intention of playing our strongest team and nor should he against Northampton. It was more a comment on what Ed decided to pick out of the comments so hakuna your tatas

thought he’d already confirmed Siem De Jong will play??
Think Gini, Colback and Anita have covered a lot of miles already in the first 3 games and against Arsenal (who have no midweek game) will probably concede more.
Id start De Jong behind Mitrovic. Tiote and possibly anita in midfield with Thauvin and Aarons wide.
Would go Darlow in goal maybe, with Taylor, Mbemba and Haidara across the back 4.

    Darlow
    Janmaat s.taylor jamal dummet
    Tioti bigi
    Thauvin de jong arrons
    Cisse

I would have a strong bench
Krul colo mbemba anita wijnaldum perez mitrovic.
Possibly Oliver kemen if he can be squeezed in on the bench. Try giving him an appearance if I could.

i prefer wide midfielders to play left foot left side and right foot right it seems more balanced and so they can cross without checkin bad inside as believe it really slows the flow the attack and gives the advantage to defenders rather than attack…..just a personnel preference ano u cant always play that way but with mitro and cisse it could help there game

    Players that should play are:

De Jong and Aarons because they haven’t featured yet.

Mitrovic because he needs to score, to get off the mark.

Tiote because he has had very little game time and is rusty.

Thauvin because he needs to experience the English league.

Toney because he would be desperate to score against his old club.

Lascelles because he hasn’t featured yet.

Not sure about Williamson and Gouffran as they maybe not for the long term.

Not sure about Dummitt as he may still be injured or recovering. Same applies to Sissoko.

While I don’t agree with how Yorkshire said it I do agree with his point.

Not all players who played on Saturday will be available especially if they are required again next Saturday.

They are therefore not possible selections.

    My team therefore:

    Krul
    Janmaat – Lascelles – Colo – Haidara
    Tiote
    Aarons – Perez – Thauvin
    De Jong
    Mitrovic

I would play Perez in central midfield as he tackles, harries and hassles, has pace together with excellent close quarter ball control to get past most close marking.

I would play De Jong further up the field as he hasn’t got what Perez has but can see a pass and an opportunity and would be excellent support to the more mobile Mitrovic, Aarons and Thauvin.

I doubt McClaren has any intention of playing him considering he is yet to make the bench so far

Absolutely bonkers playing our best XI against Northampton. What if mitrovic or Wijnaldum get injured and they miss 2 or 3 months or longer.. All because we feared Northampton.

    Darlow
    Janmaat, Laschelles, saylor/willo, Dummett
    Tiote, Kemen
    Obertan, SDJ, Aarons
    Cisse

Bench should have the likes of mitrovic and Wij just in case they are needed. Obertan starts because I don’t want to see him play against Arsenal and Perez should be kept fresh for that game

Should be a good run out tonight. I fancy Mitro will open his account, and a good opportunity for de Jong and Aarons to stake a claim. I would also play Obertan as Perez would start on Saturday if it was up to me. Thauvin must get a bit of a run and Tiote also needs to get some game time under his belt. I am hoping Anita and Wijnaldum will get a rest and Sissoko won’t be risked with his groin strain. Janmaat missed Man U and should get a run while Colo must get a rest.
