English Strikers Too Expensive So This Man Stays At Newcastle

4:21 pm, Wednesday, August 26th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 143 Comments

It seems that Newcastle were not the only club interested in Wolves striker Benik Afobe who they signed from Arsenal for £2M last January, and it seems that Norwich City have already out in a £8M bid for the 22 year-old Englishman.

That’s more than he’s worth and we though that if Newcastle could get Benik in for around £5M that would have been a good by for the club – and we could even have then sold Papiss Cisse.

Benik Afobe Burton+Albion+v+Wolverhampton+zB-CchUKV9rl

Benik Afobe – £14M – Wolves had to be kidding

But news in the Mirror today that Wolves have slapped a £14M price tag on the 22 year-old – who has never played in the Premier League – what’s that about English players being far too expensive?

That’s a really ridiculous price for the 22 year-old – who looks a promising player but not for £14M – and if Newcastle desperately still need another striker, we could get Charlie Austin for that – and he’s a proven PL goalscorer.

But we don’t think striker is now a priority at Newcastle  – and we have Aleksandar Mitrovic, Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez and Emmanuel Riviere as out-and-out strikers.

We also have Gini Wijnaldum, Siem de Jong, Florian Thauvin and Rolando Aarons, among others, who are more than capable of scoring goals from midfield.

So we seem to be OK in that particular position – as long as we now keep Papiss Cisse for the season.

And even if Mitrovic starts the games this season, Papiss last season showed us how good he is at coming off the bench and scoring goals, and though he started very few games – he still scored 11 goals in just 22 appearances.

Papiss Cisse should stay at Newcastle and then  we should be OK up front – and the only position we still really need to strengthen is center-back – although we are also short of good full-backs.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

That is stupid. Wijanldum cost 14.5m

My crazy team for the game at Arsenal:
    Thauvin………..Wijanldum. …………..Perez

  • 5 OneAlanShearer // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:32 PM

If mitrovic gets injured we are left with an impact player in cisse. Perez is better playing off a main striker. Riviere is not even in same fantasy football team as a striker…Couldn’t score in a thousand hours of football.

So its not just a calculated risk it’s a calculated mistake.

The same goes for a centre back. Mbemba gets injured and we don’t have any pace or positional sense at centre back.. Saylor and Colo are upping their games because their position is under threat…without him it’s not.

Over to you Lee charnley. If it was me I’d close one of those gaps/risks in this window.

In the next window I’d get two full backs to increase the competition for places and the quality at the same time, a youngster at Rb and at lb. Then close the cb or striker gap you didn’t close in this window. 1 risk is one thing 2 is careless. The quality of opposition in the league is the highest and is far higher in my humble opinion than last season.

  • 7 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:33 PM

were you the one saying mbemba has played a def/mid for his country will die?

  • 8 GeordieGadie // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:34 PM

can’t blame wolves, everyone is trying to make a buck in this trade and they’re no exception.
Trouble is that there are those who are ready to pay, and those make football a ridiculous game.

It starts by someone in Spain paying one hundred million pounds for a footballer, and then he gets that back from the TV who increase prices on live football and fans then resort to clubs who increase ticket prices and the only losers in the end are poor fans.

Our nation which was once proud of being the nation that created football now has foreign owners who bring in foreign coaches/managers to employ foreign players to play for them.
I thought it was just that but then it does NOT.
There are foreign assistants and foreign physios, I wonder why they don’t bring in foreign fans too? at least they can pronounce players names!

Neymar who has two feet only, two hands and one head can only go for £182m.
That’s one hundred and eighty two millions.
Which is 364,000 weeks of income (a reasonable £500 pounds/week income in the uk) which is: 7000 years of continuous work.

so you work for 7000 years .. he does it in one go.
This money is all there is in a whole town in England, and may well be a whole city in another country.

Actually Neymar’s service is more than the national economy of many countries in this world.

This is all getting absurd and should stop before the game gets out of hand.

I used to worship our England team at one time, 1980’s I actually fell into a coma when we lost to Argentina in France 90.

The way things have gone I actually now don’t bother watching England, you get millionaires playing for no good cause, fcuk England for all they care, and I say fcuk them too, I stopped supporting my country.

    Janmaat………..Sissoko. …………..Thauvin

I have no idea why Janmaat isnt used as a winger.

He’s a Valencia-type for me. His passing is really good and can run all day. Prefer him used as winger above sissoko.

  • 11 will die for the toon army // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:42 PM

Just put him there he is the only one I know can win balls in the team. Colback and Anita can’t.

  • 12 OneAlanShearer // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:45 PM

On austin – I’ve said little about him. On his alleged injury risk…All payers have that his is just slightly higher. On his worth – 15 is high..offer 12 on the last day. On him as an asset to the team. He has the battling qualities I can see him and mitrovic playing the 2 of a 352 or 442 well with supply from thauvin and sissoko. I can only see positives from him signing …but in truth I suspect thauvin was our last signing in this window. I hope we keep up the battling defence but thauvin and Wijnaldum and mitrovic must start against arsenal.

  • 13 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:45 PM

ok will die im sure someone commented that he played that position for country…..need someone like that in that position but i’d rather have him as centre half or we’ll still be weak there

  • 14 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:48 PM

    against arse
we need players who can pass andkeep the ball and are comfortable recieving the ball with players at there back gini showed he could do that on sat which was good to see

  • 15 RolandoOverhead // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:54 PM

Use Kemen as bait for a cut price deal to bring in Abdennour. Play him and Colo/Taylor with Mbemba as dm beside Gini and delete Jong. Sell trash and buy Dunk and Willems in Jan.

  • 16 toon kk // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:57 PM

I think our transfer business is well and truly over, maybe a sale if the right money was offered for Sissoko or Cisse (which would be a big mistake) to recruit some money.
Our defence has shown it can be fairly strong if everyone pulls there weight. Trouble is quality pacey sides will rip us apart.

  • 17 lochinvar // Aug 26, 2015 at 4:58 PM

Sky reports Norwich’s bid for Afobe as £10m .
The crazies are in town thanks to Sky TV and USA TV money for a Premier League.

  • 18 Thump // Aug 26, 2015 at 5:26 PM

@Springy: Left back as to be top priority. Haidara isn’t good enough to be a regular starter, and Dummet is the same.

  • 19 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 5:28 PM

You say, “comparing his transfer to Tow vans is a bit silly , Duff was 27 …”

I’m not comparing for the reasons you state. My comparison was simply this. Duff arrived for £5m and looked like an absolute bargain after his performance in that game. (He should’ve been in his prime at that age anyway.) He never replicated that display. What I’m saying is that you can’t read too much, if anything, into one performance and especially not against lower league teams. With only one foot, the oppo will work him out pretty quickly I fear. Ozil is limited for the same reason.

  • 20 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 5:31 PM

We should not be selling Sissoko unless we can get someone better in. The addition of these better players may bring more out of Sissoko.

  • 21 Toontaff // Aug 26, 2015 at 5:35 PM

I’m quite happy with who we have brought In , I would wait until jan to bring in back up for the front players ,

I would like another CB though, Williamson isn’t good enough cover

  • 23 toon kk // Aug 26, 2015 at 5:41 PM

Newcastle’ s downfall has been poor budget recruiting over the last few years. MA had his pathetic flawed resale regime in place, expecting he could turn flops into world class players.
Its taken a relegation scare to make him realise his mistakes. Unfortunately we’re stuck with so many flops which will take several years to correct. Providing big offers coming in doesn’t restart the regime in a couple of years.

  • 24 hibbit // Aug 26, 2015 at 5:44 PM

You could see last night why Aarons isn’t starting. So far he’s done nothing in the game. He’s got loads to prove. He might be extremely talented. He might be just suffering through being out for so long and will eventually get into his stride. But he might end up like Vuckic and the rest of them if he’s not careful. The club have to tie him down if they reckon he’s got more than he’s shown and can deliver. Makro and Costco are best placed.

  • 35 Dagga // Aug 26, 2015 at 6:17 PM

As Cisse is the only proven goal scorer we have atm I would keep him till January. If Mitrovic beds in well and we add goals from other areas as well then we can sell him, besides someone is more likely to pay daft money in January if they need a goalscorer to get them out of the s**t.

  • 36 Jail for Ashley // Aug 26, 2015 at 6:23 PM

All this talk about selling someone is bollocks, imo unless it’s Gouffran, Obertan or Marveaux and Willo or Taylor but only if we buy a quality commanding CB, then we need all hands on deck.

  • 37 Jail for Ashley // Aug 26, 2015 at 6:25 PM

Tbh, I’d quite happily see the three I listed above leave without replacement, although can’t fault Gouffran for trying, most of the time.

  • 38 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 26, 2015 at 6:26 PM

To be honest I don’t think Cisse is going to work very well within McClaren’s system!

I had him down as our top goal score this season (maybe 10-11 goals) but that was before I really saw us play!

  • 39 Jail for Ashley // Aug 26, 2015 at 6:27 PM

Who does anyone else think could be sold without being replaced ?

  • 40 cyprus // Aug 26, 2015 at 6:32 PM

Jan as a winger?! Because he can’t defend very well or because he can cross the ball? Despite his relevant slowness, he’s still probably our best LB. Still, he isn’t the finished article or captain material, as was thought here. He needs to improve, as we’re often exposed on that side.

Talking of ‘exposed’ that Enrique was rarely that, on the other side. Is he still persona non grata over there?

  • 41 cyprus // Aug 26, 2015 at 6:34 PM

I’d drive Obertan anywhere. Still we don’t have a real right winger these days.

  • 42 cyprus // Aug 26, 2015 at 6:36 PM

Goufran isn’t as bad as people think. The problem is we have too many utility players, like him, players who do ok anywhere, but are not outstanding somewhere.

Blackley – Don’t be damned by faint praise. Your Thauvin has no right foot point earlier overlooks the all time great Diego Maradona who only had a left foot.

The Arsenal game could be the acid test. We’re fortunate to be playing them at this stage of the season because they currently lack balance and are fairly predictable.
There endeavouring to create chances centrally rather than utilise pace out wide.
Overly elaborate but Chamberlain and Walcott could change this – Can’t see Wenger dropping Ozil but they would be far more direct without him. Like ManU they lack in Giroud someone to open up defences. Strong case for the same toon defence as Taylor deserves another game to show his current worth to the side. Janmaat on the bench for me despite linking well with Thauvin.

    Steve Black

    We’re evolving things together

I’m very pleased to be writing to you this week as we look to take the momentum of two positive results into the game with Arsenal this Saturday.

As part of Steve McClaren’s new backroom team, I firstly want to say it’s wonderful to be back in the North East, to be home. I’m biased but there is incredible passion for sports here and especially football. It’s in the blood.

As a coaching team, we are evolving things within the club together. Steve and I have a great relationship and have known each other for a number of years. He has a good mind but first of all, he’s a good person and that means a lot to me. He’s a very good football coach and importantly, he wants to get better. That drives standards.

My role is simply to help people to become better at what they do – to act as a supporter, a catalyst, a mentor, a coach, an advisor. On a day-by-day basis, I work with the players, Steve, the coaches and the medical staff to create a winning environment; an environment of excellence.

When I first arrived, I saw a team that had a lot more talent than results suggested. That was my first impression. Another was that if we could get them organised, find out what was driving them and get them motivated – which doesn’t happen overnight, we could move towards creating a probability of success rather than just a possibility.

To achieve that, we have been talking to players about their personal quality control and team quality control. We ask what they want to achieve and we talk about how they can go about doing that.

We want to create good habits. If you use your time wisely and have quality control that ensures you meet your expectations and ambitions, you can’t go far wrong. You need to do the right things and to do them effectively and efficiently.

In my career, I have been fortunate to work across lots of sports and with lots of different athletes. The common theme is that it’s about coaching people. I have an obsessive love of sport but a lot of the messages I want to to convey and questions I ask could be applied in sports, in business, across all sorts. ‘How hard have I worked? How high have my standards been? How eagerly have I interacted? Have I enhanced my standing in the group? Have I enjoyed my work?’

You need to glean from sports science how to treat individual players in a bespoke way and gel that to produce team performances.

Ultimately, ‘well done’ is better than ‘well said’. We have to walk the walk and so far, our physical statistics are excellent. We’ve seen a group of people who have awoken their desire.

Invariably, great teams show incredible ambition when they’re attacking and unbelievable spirit when they’re defending. Against Manchester United last weekend, when we had the counter attack at the end, it showed incredible ambition at that stage in the game and I was delighted we really went for it.

That’s a sign of team ambition manifesting itself. We were sharp, bright, alert, we saw things first and we got there first. We smelled opportunity and threat. We did a lot of things well and over time, that will get better.

On Tuesday evening, we wanted to give Northampton the utmost respect in our cup game against them and the best way to show that was to go out there and do a really good, professional job. To show ambition and spirit. As the fans who were there with us on Tuesday will testify, we did that.

It’s important that we don’t get carried away in victory or defeat. Our professionalism should transcend that, so straight after the game, our focus turned to Arsenal.

We have a general strategy of how we want to play but that has to adjust and adapt to each opponent. We obviously want to accentuate our strengths and our opponents’ weaknesses and we’re now working hard on that ahead of Saturday’s game at wonderful St. James’ Park. I hope to see you there.

So much for Stones being worth £40m, hope Chelsea pull out and Everton are stuck with an unhappy player.

  • 89 lochinvar // Aug 26, 2015 at 8:30 PM

The developments concerning Berahino come on the day we learned Spurs have reservations about making a third bid for the West Brom striker. We also understand they are now considering other options.
Tonight Berahino has stopped following West Brom on Twitter – what an idiot some of these players are.
West Brom have had two bids rejected for the forward – the most recent being a £22m offer. But at the same time West Brom are lining up a bid for Austin who Pulis is keen on and if they get £22m for Berahino they’ll pay the £15m QPR want to keep their fans happy.

Not needed at Newcastle. Bet his missus will be happy about living in Brummie land.

I like that email from black, very good.

Spurs look to be forgetting about berahino and going for son instead. Don’t blame them as he’s quality.

And Leicester are getting gray from Birmingham, for 4.7 million. Bargain and how did we not go for that especially with his release clause being so low.

  • 102 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:02 PM

Why are we never in for these domestic bargains?!?

Huth for 3 million Weimann for 2 million Gray for 4.7 all of them could have replaced Gouffran, Obertan and Williamson !

No idea, the gray deal shocks me because since he is English you could sell him for 20 odd million in a couple years time. Not that I am advocating the buy low and sell policy we’ve had.

  • 109 SUTTY1978 // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:17 PM

Looks like the fee being agreed for Gray is BS. Cant see why brum would sign him up to a new contract with a really low release clause, doesn’t make any sense for them to do that.

  • 110 the broons // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:20 PM

Can anybody enlighten me with this Gray that seems to be the topic of conversation?

I presume its Demarl Gray from Birmingham who I pointed out a while ago, who is the club close to signing him?

Also think that Holgate that ended up at Everton may prove to be a missed opportunity.

  • 113 ronaldo aarons // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:26 PM

Yes that’s the one, Leicester have supposedly met the release clause of 4.7m which is a bargain in my eyes. I can’t judge on Holgate as ive not actually seen him play. I don’t watch league 1 football and have only started take an interest in it for Armstrong.

  • 116 SUTTY1978 // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Funk, he’s about five divisions better than Roberts

  • 117 ronaldo aarons // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:38 PM

    Mr funk

Fair question but I don’t think it would. Roberts is at least 2 years away from being first team ready. As for aarons, there’s no guarantees he will sign a contract plus there is no harm in having 2 wingers for each side, aarons and gray if we pursued him with thauvin and Sissoko (only saying him as that’s where we see him playing this year) on the right.

  • 118 the broons // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:38 PM

    SUTTY1978/rolando aarons

if 4.7 million is the fee qouted then that does seem cheap for someone who’s price is only going to go up in value.

He reminds me so much of Nathan Redmond while he was at Birmingham its uncanny! bags of pace and loves taking on the defenders.

And by the way Redmond has started this season on fire, I think it would take a fee close to 20 million to convince Norwich to sell now.

  • 119 Jib // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:38 PM

    SUTTY1978 // Aug 18, 2015 at 9:01 PM

Buying Thauvin is mental and shows Graham Carr has too much power, he’s the only one that wants him.
99% of the fans are at best not fussed one way or the other.
He was half decent for 6 months 2 1/2 years ago but has been utter shite ever since,
he’s about the same quality as Obertan and will fail spectacularly in the premier league.
What a frickin waste of money, it disgusts me, another player with zero creativity,
carr only looks for players who take pot shots, never looks at the players that set them up. Awful, awful signing

  • 120 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 26, 2015 at 9:39 PM

If English strikers are too expensive ….how about this latest gossip which is going to seriously p@ss Berahino off or are Spurs calling West Broms bluff ?

Tottenham are in talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen forward Son Heung-min as they consider ending their interest in West Brom striker Saido Berahino.
The South Korea international, 23, has scored 21 goals in 62
Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen having joined them from Hamburg in 2013.
The proposed deal for Son is reportedly worth 30m euros (£22m).
Spurs are contemplating ending their pursuit of 22-year-old Berahino after a second bid was rejected by West Brom.
Albion turned down an initial offer for the 22-year-old from Spurs last week, while the player has had a transfer request rejected.
