He Showed Us What He Can Do Last NIght

Steve McClaren has talked about the game last night and one highlight was the form of new signing Florian Thauvin and his ability to cross the ball.

He put in some great crosses last night and it looks like he will now be our taker of free kicks and corners, and he started off by getting on the end of a great cross by Massadio Haidara, and scored his first goal for Newcastle after just 3 minutes.

florian thauvin star man

Florian Thauvin – great game last night

Steve McClaren has been impressed with what he has seen from the 22 year-old so far:

“To get almost 27,000 was a great crowd.” “The fans have probably gone away – like me – and been pleased with the attacking side of it.”

“There were some great deliveries and that is going to be vital.” “You can have people who are the best at heading in the world, but it’s no good if the delivery isn’t right.”

“Florian can score and assist and he showed what he can do.” “It was a relief.” “This was always going to be a difficult game.”

“We started well and should have had three or four before half-time.” “We started well in the second half and overall it was a professional job.”

“It’s nice win and score a few goals.”

We hope that Florian Thauvin is ready to start for Newcastle against Arsenal on Saturday, and he’s already played a couple of games for Marseilles so he seems up to speed as far as fitness goes.

Florian can be a real threat against the Gunners on Saturday.

Comments welcome.

we dont want to play to high against arsenal it will leave space behind, but at the same time we cant be as deep as we were against man u as they will play through us it will be interesting to see how we set up!!!!

  • 3 Toonfan8 // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:09 AM

I wonder if this Jordan Ferry rumour has something in it, he is exciting prospect from Lyon and seems to be one of the missing pieces in our team…
    missing pieces—strong CB
    cover RB
DM player, with mobility and strong tackler
    quick forward….
this has to be sorted in this and next transfer window and we have great team…

  • 4 Novocastrian66 // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:09 AM

Liverpool defended deep against them in the 2nd half and Arsenal struggled to get through them. I was surprised how they lacked width on Monday night. I reckon they will look to widen their approach play on Saturday and wont be so narrow when attacking.

  • 5 Bambams // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:16 AM

Mac said when he arrived he wanted to set his team up ’10 yards’ further up the pitch. Hence one of the reasons we have the pacey Mbemba.

    A tall commanding CB
    Cover at LB
    Strong DM

All in all its been a better window than we ever thought would happen, if we are honest.

  • 6 corkypants // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:27 AM

liverpool have the back four to get away with sitting so deep we dont,

they hardly ever play wider novo buddy dont no why either they have the pace they always try play through middle, even when they play a game that uses there wingers there still quite narrow.

which back four would you use think i would keep the same as man u

  • 7 barkel // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:32 AM

Same back four is a good shout, Mbemba can deal with the pace better than Janmaat. I’d really like to see us attack them from the off, they’re too used to teams sitting back and trying to catch them on the counter attack

  • 8 OneAlanShearer // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:41 AM

    Janmaat Mbemba Colo Haidara

    Sissoko anita colback thauvin

That’s the team I’d start against arsenal

Subs: Darlow, Saylor, sdj, perez, cisse, Tiote, Dummett or lascelles or aarons depending on fitness or any niggles in the side.

  • 9 Slank // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:49 AM

I’ve read the match reports and Aarons is hardly mentioned.

Can anyone who was at the match tell me how he did ?

Also, how did Goofy perform in his unaccustomed role of midfielder ?

  • 10 spaghetti bandit // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:50 AM

Rife on the French twitter regarding ferri,, they seem to think he’s away here but would like to receive closer to 10 mill for him,, can honestly say I don’t know alot about him and haven’t seen us linked,, anyone fancy telling me what he’s about,, someone was liking him to a young cabaye n all the Frenchis saying we getting a great player??

  • 11 Slank // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:53 AM

    OneAlanShearer @ 8

Your team picks itself. It’s probably our strongest side.

I wish there was a place for Perez as he always looks dangerous and works so hard for the team.

  • 12 deeps // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:54 AM

Yea he’s like a young Cabaye.. Good on the ball and deadly on set pieces

  • 13 DaraghL // Aug 26, 2015 at 10:58 AM

Looked up ‘Ferri Lyon’ as I know nothing about him. First article was that he signed a new deal in July.

    Another centre mid?

  • 14 spaghetti bandit // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:02 AM

Try vic de santa on Twitter or ferri lyon airport,, apparently he was spotted there last nite and on train to Newcastle??

  • 15 toon kk // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:03 AM

S mc will have us set up against Arsenal to sit back and try and catch them on the break, otherwise they’ll pass us off the pitch.

    Spag –

Not disagreeing with you. I can see the other news but the fact that he just signed a contract and is another centre mid leads me to question the validity of the twitter reports.

Maybe playing Gouffran yday made SMc realise he needs one more CM.

  • 19 Ibizatoon // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:19 AM

    Hello all,

    Well, that’s a new experience.

Strong team, a good win, good crosses, set pieces and a Williamson goal.

    Is Thauvin the horse?

A home game against Wednesday in the next round. Nice stuff.

Hopefully we take some confidence in to the PL. Not getting carried away by a good win against lower opposition, but it’s a welcome break from the normal knock out.

…Williamson scoring a goal. Whatever next?

  • 20 Tuttelbom // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:21 AM

    Janmaat Mbemba Saylor Haidara

    Thauvin anita Wijnaldum Perez
    De Jong

That would be my pick of a team against Arsenal.
Might slot in Sissoko aside Anita and push Wijnaldum, up instead of De Jong.

  • 21 DaraghL // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:26 AM

Let’s be honest Colo will be playing. He would be in any 11 I would make aswell.

  • 22 anthc // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:27 AM

Aarons was off his game imo. Tried too hard at times and sharpness wasn’t quire there. A few games will hopefully sort that but from what I saw it can see why obertan gets the nod ahead of him at the minute. Gouffran has went back drastically since we signed him. Although out of position last night he was average at best. Last else’s also looked a bit dodgy at times too. His touch was sometimes poor and he was a bit too casual at times.

  • 23 spaghetti bandit // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:27 AM

    Re daraghL
Nah a know mate a thought th same but thinking of it we have tiote anita colback in the centre and none of those 3 are what you would call dynamic spreading forward passes

  • 25 Whumpie // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:31 AM

Delighted with last night. The win – obviously, the style of play – lots of attack. Thauvain – everything we’d hoped and lots that we needed (albeit against lower-league opposition… but still). Lovely work from lots of players; wonderful skill from Aarons to set up the 1st goal, great crosses from Hairdryer, and even a Cruyff turn from Willo! Maclaren – nailed it again, and kept us a fresh 1st 11 for the Arse game.

All in all – nice job, people. 🙂

  • 26 toon1707 // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:31 AM

Aaron’s in my opinion was poor last night I was glad he got a start as he always looks dangerous but last night I think he had a bad night got tackled almost every time he got the ball hopefully a one off as like I said he normally looks

  • 29 geordiejp // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:37 AM

You can watch all the goals here, congrats Thauvin

  • 30 toon kk // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:38 AM

Aarons needs game time, going off last season we always seemed a better side with him in it.
    time Tiote was shipped oot.

  • 31 Whumpie // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:38 AM

Nothing that happened last night could have convinced me that we’re not in deep sh1t when it comes to defence, though. Unless Maclaren has a magic “make Willo good, Colo consistent and Taylor not a twat” wand, I don’t see how we’re supposed to get through a campaign without shipping a record number of goals.

Again – hoping to be proven wrong! The club has already spent a lot more than I thought they would, so…

  • 32 JamesToon // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:48 AM

Thought SDJ played well last night, pinging the ball around getting into good positions, hopefully he’ll get some starts soon

  • 33 hibbit // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:54 AM

whumpie your not wrong mate the back 4 is lacking in cover and quality the issue needs to be addressed quickly

  • 34 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 26, 2015 at 11:58 AM

Jordan ferri is a tenacious midfielder. Means Tiote is leaving?

  • 35 Sazzer // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:04 PM

Jordan Ferri is a deep-lying playmaker with great distribution. Interesting being linked with him but I would be suprised if Lyon end up selling him.

  • 36 Sazzer // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:07 PM

Lyon have been linked with possible replacements like Lucas Silva and Darder.

  • 37 Nufc-83 // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:08 PM

We are desperate for a player in Ferri’s mould as Anita and Codback are so limited in what they offer. We need someone who can ping balls and switch the play quickly and also can hit a shot from distance. He really does look the part but its been rubbished by some sources 🙁

  • 38 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:11 PM

I have no doubt Carr is after him and will know him well but Lyon are difficult sellers they also know we have money to burn!!!

We need a deep lying play maker who can tackle and pass so many times in the first few games where if we had someone with vision and ability to switch the play we would have cut Man Utd open many times because their right hand side was wide open

  • 39 Graeme // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:19 PM

LCBP – Is this guy our Cabaye replacement then? Or is that Toe Van?

  • 40 hibbit // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:22 PM

are we in for this guy or is this just another red herring ??

  • 41 lesh // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:22 PM

  • 43 check the toastie // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:24 PM

Few comments from last night, i was there. A decent win, nice to see some goals.

Positives – Perez and Thauvin,Haidara and Janmaat played canny an all.

Lascelles is worse than Williamson, will never make it. Clumsy and Slow.

Tiote is finished as a decent PL player, too slow in everything he does, decision making when he recieves the ball is awful, pops it off quick and backwards when he has space, dwells on the ball when he doesnt, we need rid, he will cost us many goals and many points.

A team is only as strong as its weakest links, last night our spine was weak, but we had a touch of magic to bail us out against lower league opposition.

Siem DeJong still worries me, and still has much to prove, believe he would be good in a team dominating the game but in a team under the cosh a total passenger. Would prefer many other players in the squad playing a ‘ten’ role rather than him currently.

Aarons looked dejected and a touch disinterested, needs to make a mark when he has a chance, was the biggest disappointment for me. Clearly has ability but poor last night.

Thauvin knocks a smashing set piece in, which is a novel idea for this team. He looks canny, hope he comes good, touch of the Bennies about him.

  • 44 JamesToon // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:31 PM

  • 46 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:55 PM

apparently chronicle mentioned that Yoan Gouffran had a cracking game in the centre mid as a box to box player. he performed much better where sisokko has failed.

has mclaren found goffy’s best role. maybe he’s a centre mid after all?

  • 47 martoon // Aug 26, 2015 at 12:56 PM

I love the way some of you can watch a player once and determine his whole future
e.g. “Lascelles is worse than Williamson, will never make it. Clumsy and Slow.”
This guy is still young, it was his first senior team appearance, in front of a home crowd, he is obviously keen to impress and not make a stupid mistake so he is bound to play within himself. Players have to be given a fair chance.
Actually I don’t know why we bother with Graham Carr wasting money watching players several times when some of you lot could just watch once and have it all worked out – it would save Ashley a fortune! 😀

Can’t remember many better debuts (ignoring the few minutes v Man.U) than we saw from Thauvin last night. Agreed it was against league 2 opposition, but for a whole hearted demonstration of energy, skill and team play this would take a lot of beating.
Roll on the weekend for the big test of whether or not Carr has unearthed a little diamond.

‘Siem DeJong still worries me, and still has much to prove, believe he would be good in a team dominating the game but in a team under the cosh a total passenger. Would prefer many other players in the squad playing a ‘ten’ role rather than him currently.’

Said this since he signed, he’s a possession based player. We don’t play that way and in this league we won’t be ready to for a long time yet. I would expect him to Be moved on within the next couple of years unless he can drastically change his game, but I can’t see it as he has no pace or power.

  • 52 toon1707 // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:04 PM

I Thought lascelles did ok was his first senior game didn’t have to much to do but when he did he did his job and got rid of it

  • 53 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:06 PM

We kept a clean sheet at Old Trafford all right. But I don’t think they were up to anywhere near their old best. I think Chelsea Liverpool Citeh and a dozen other clubs might test us a bit more.

Against Arsenal, I think if SM sets us up to sit back and catch them on the break. Wenger won’t even turn up to watch, probably do a bit of gardening, sone shopping or maybe go to the seaside, safe in the knowledge they’ve won 3-0. We need to take the pressure off defence by making a go of it higher up the pitch, get the midfield in control and press them, they should be the away team, let them sit back.

  • 54 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:08 PM

Martoon – I remember the time I first saw Willo…..

  • 55 Lindisfarne // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:10 PM

Gotta be 4-5-1 against Arsenal, similar to the last 20 minutes at Old Trafford, but would consider Mbemba as a sweeper in a five man defence. Gini and Sissoko should be the talent in the middle but I think the latter has been put on ice until the end of the transfer window. Then perhaps Toe-van, Itchy & Perez up front. It would certainly give them a game if the team were up to the change in formation.

  • 56 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:10 PM

I remember seeing DeJong play for the Dutch a couple of years back and he looked the part. My theory, and it is only that, is that his illness and injury setbacks have knacked him. I think this is all there is of him now.

  • 57 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:13 PM

If we set ourselves up to repel all boarders we will be boarded yaaarr me mateys aaarrrrr.. Ok I’ll stop.

They have too much up front for us to hang on for a whole game. The best thing for us is to absolutely hammer them from the off.

  • 58 Hail Wor Ashley // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:17 PM

Pressure on Arsenal’s defence likely without Koscielny and Mertesacker is paramount, take it to them:

High intensity team, get the crowd behind them from the first whistle. Sissoko playing centrally to spring counter attacks with his powerful running and a busy front 4 that won’t give their defence any breathing space. Pacey fullbacks to nullify theirs and Saylor to deal with Giroud.

  • 59 Robiatti // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:17 PM

Totally agree with comments from earlier posts about Sissoko. For me he cannot head or put a tackle in whatsoever. His close control and passing are too weak to be a CM in the premiership. All he can do is run – Kieron Dyer mark 2 anyone? I think people look at his physique and assume he puts himself about, but he has no fight of heart for our club. Get rid.

  • 60 corkypants // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:18 PM

De Jong:- Let the lad get bk to full fitness first then we will see how good he is

Jordan Ferri :- Brilliant player very similar to cabaye in style, cant find any rumours about him joining newcastle though, can someone put a link up, he would be a very good addition

    But why no defender links?

    Very puzzeling!!!!!!!!

I’d say we’re starting to become more of a possession based team. SDJ will fit and come good soon i reckon

  • 63 corkypants // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:30 PM

Just a thought how would everyone grade the coaching teams start out of 10 if we were to win against arsenal?

    I would 8.5/10

Reason the obvious improvement in style and how we have better shape as a unit, only downside is for me the lack of a new CB and not much deadwood shipped but is this the managers fault or charnleys or are teams not just interested!

  • 64 martoon // Aug 26, 2015 at 1:43 PM

Hail Wor Ashley @58 (love the name 🙂 )
Your team looks good but playing Sissoko in the centre has never worked in the past however I can’t think of any other way to fit in all our best players. I personally like Colback and would maybe play him instead of Anita but really it’s a toss up between them.

    Van Dijk
    Raphael Guerriero
    Leroy Fer

Munster – Ignore the Chronicle, they base match reports on Results, until we scored the third it was as if Pardew was back in charge.

Goalkeeper kicking it long, most of the time out, kicking for touch like Krul had done at the weekend, pinned in our own half by a lower league side, unable to pass through them and hanging on a touch.

When the third goal came it was against the run of play, a counter attack. Lets not get carried away by the result, the performance and setup was nothing like Soton game. Anita is now so important, appears the only one with the balls to offer off the keeper when not in acres of space. Tiote bottled it as soon as he realised hes still off the pace and had already gifted them one goal.

As i say Thauvin was canny and Perez is a diamond. only two that made any sort of statement.

DeJong was in some good attackng postions at times and dithered, concerned about him.

Anita is a far better player than Colback. The big difference between them is between the lugs. Watch Anitas positioning next game. Watch how whenever a defender goes surging forwards he slips into that position covering the man. Then watch how often Colback steams up alone to a cb who has options left and right passes it around him and leaves Colback 10m behind the ball in the wrong half! I like him but he needs massive work to become a good player

  • 77 Menelauos // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:01 PM

My teams for Arsenal, we can either play 4-2-3-1 like I think we will.

That allow that attacking 3 to interchange behind Mitrovic, as they can all play at number 10 and on the wing, and can cause major issues for any defence.

We have a midfield that’s able to keep possession and push forward allowing Perez and Thauvin to either go narrow and cut in, or cover behind, I see a lot of good stuff from our current team.
But Sissoko said himself his hero is Viera and he bases the way he plays off his style. He needs a chance to show he can.

  • 78 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:02 PM

I like Perez but he’s not going to get many goals. You can’t compare him to Cisse. Perez opens doors and makes opportunities for others.

I can’t believe anyone writing of Lascelles so early or saying he’s worse than Willo. I thought he did fine last night and hope he grows in confidence. I can’t recall him putting a foot wrong. He’s certainly got the right physical attributes.

Here’s my view from the East Stand for anyone who missed it.

Thauvin was by far and away the man of the match. Worth paying £15 to see his entertaining performance. Word of caution though. The lad has absolutely no right foot and so is limited. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the opposition soon work him out and nullify him. Arsenal are a much tougher proposition than Northampton.

Darlow, not much to do, punched well, kicked badly.
    Lascelles was steady away.
Janmaat, some good, some bad. Final ball could be better.
I can’t believe Willo picked up 32 votes. I turn up in a good mood and he quickly drives me to despair.
    Haidara, poor showing.
Aarons, disappointing. I can see why he’s not playing. Thauvin showed him how to do it.
Tiote, getting sharper. I couldn’t see the handball. Strange one as under no pressure.
Perez would be a top player if he knew what to do in front of goal. Showed some good approach work.
    Gouffran, get rid of him.
De Jong, decent showing, good goal but touch let him down at a couple of vital moments. Not quick or mobile enough for me.
Colback, one to forget. He’s starting to irritate me with his backward and sideways passes.

  • 79 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:03 PM

lets hope thauvin(if he starts) gets some near the performance last night coz we’ll need some talent and graft on show against the arse

  • 80 jayphoto // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:03 PM

Said in July id prefer If we signed austin or Thauvin that id prefer Thauvin and hed have people off their seats…. Got crucified on here for it.
Early days and not getting carried away after beating l2 opposition but i stand by the statement

  • 81 jayphoto // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:05 PM

Spent last week correcting numerous posters claiming Thauvin was a carbon copy of cabella in style too… Hopefully won’t have to do that again…
Didn’t see the game last night but was tiote as bad as im hearing?

  • 82 WWSBRD // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:06 PM

Thauvin was cracking but it was Northampton he was facing, saying that he was ok against Man Utd

I wasn’t excited when he signed but that’s not a bad thing, will see how he grows into the season before signing his praises or slating him

On another note Arsenal could be without their 2 first choice CBs by the sounds of it I’d say Debuchy and Gabriel if they don’t make it…our strikers can damage that if we get out of our half

  • 83 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:07 PM

was’nt there… but your view was similar to the commentators on the radio to be fair

  • 84 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:09 PM

This is what the team should look like next week:

    Janmaat Mbemba Van Dijk Guerriero

    Sissoko Wijnaldum Marveaux Thauvin

    Siem De Jong

    Williamson – £1.5m
    Dummett – £1.5m
    Obertan – £3m
    Gouffran – £3m
    Bigirimana – £1m
    Ferguson – £1m
    Colback – £8m
    Tiote – £8m

    Total sales = £27m

    Loan out:

  • 85 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:09 PM

You’re mocking posters knowledge. Thauvin has had one good game against lowly opposition. He was the stand out player. Let’s see what he’s like over a season. He has a major achilles heel: no right foot. Can he get away with it in the Prem? Too early for you to crow.

  • 86 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:10 PM

on sat we need to keep the ball a lot better and pass alot cleaner and quicker….hopefully last sat performance and last night can give them all a confidence boost and help that happen

  • 87 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:11 PM

We desperately need to get rid of a few fannies, not get more in.

  • 88 jayphoto // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:11 PM

If mertesacker and koscielney are out Mitrovic will have a field day!
Expect gabriel to become a top signing but correctly him and chambers struggle with the physical side of the game! Mertesacker for that game will be a big miss.
Its one of 2 games a year we know sissoko will turn up for! 4 days before the window ends im guessing he’ll be more paul pogba than paul konchesky that day

  • 89 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:13 PM

What were the commentators saying in particular that stood out for you? Was it Ando and Mick Lowes?

  • 90 magscar // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:13 PM

Went last night and thoroughly enjoyed game but was concerned at number of unforced errors and lack of leadership although De Jong did do some shouting at others trying to galvinise at times. After their penalty ( what was Tiote doing!!??) we seemed to lose traction for a while and couldn’t keep ball.

Coaches do seem to have tried with Williamson’s on ball confidence and distribution but he needs a good passer in front of him to prevent the overuse of square ball and the lob down the channel – although the latter wasn’t as much in evidence. His out ball was mostly Tiote who had a shocking 1st half but improved some in 2cnd. Creativity was down the wings with Goufran working hard alongside but mostly in front of Tiote. Goufran was OK in that position against some physical opposition but still needs to be moved on as he is no more than a stand in. Tiote was clearly ring rusty but slowed down game with a lot of square or back passing yet on occasions did hit a long range “change of play” ball to good effect. Possibly still too early to see if he can fully adapt to quick passing game higher up pitch that McClaren is after.

CB’s were OK Lascelles is not ready for PL but did try to carry ball out of defence at times.

With the quality on wings it wasn’t surprising that a lot of play went that way but I would have liked to see some creativity in middle although Perez did well and De Jong showed some intelligent movement playing higher up.

Enough has already been said about Thauvin’s excellent display so let’s hope this becomes a constant in PL. Aarons was little disappointing but again hasn’t had much game time.

FB’s did well with Jannmatt working well with Thauvin and will be interesting to see how this can develop in PL. Darlow’s distribution was a poor as Krul’s at times and I don’t know if given the lack of height in midfield and up front coupled with poor passing of the CB’s leads the coaches to encourage the kicks out towards touchline? Certainly need to improve on this aspect if we are to become more of a possession side as last night we fortunately weren’t punished as we might have been after some loose passing.

Interesting that even Northhampton from outside of PL had alreday picked up on Mitro’s weakness as soon as he came on by trying to wind him up ( and getting away with it partly due to some iffy refereeing). Still good to see some passion though and if he can channel it right he is going to bring something we have missed since Shearer and is already on his way to becoming a crowd favourite.

Long way to go but McClaren managed to put out a side no one, press or fan alike had totally foreseen and delivered an eventual comfortable win – so no complaints from me at his choices. Interestingly the side Pardew had put out last year against Gillingham away at this stage looks stronger on paper than this despite most thinking we always put out weakened sides ( Perez and Aarons being the relatively only untried young players that night)

  • 91 martoon // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:13 PM

Tinman @71 – I can’t say I’ve noticed that but I’ll watch Anita & Colback carefuly in the next couple of home games and see if I agree!

  • 92 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:14 PM

Hail the Fatbloke is right about the attacking style and not including the pointless Colback.

Shame as a poster he’s a no-necked spineless lickspittle who only dared come on the blog when it looked safe above the trench line. Shame really, apart from that seems a decent turn 🙂

  • 93 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:14 PM

  • 94 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:15 PM

Do you recall Duff on his first game at SJP? I was there. Some friendly against foreign oppo I think.

  • 96 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:18 PM

Yo somehow I don’t think I’d win many contracts 🙂

  • 97 Tinman // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:18 PM

Anita has always been good at it, I really like what he does in the CDM role. He gets the ball moving nicely and always drops into good positions. If he works on his upper body strength he would be great, but would definitely need a commanding CB, or 2, to help cover for the amount of headers he will never even be able to challenge for.

  • 98 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:20 PM

I don’t like Haidara generally. He’s championship standard for me. His decision making and general passing is poor. He doesnt look particularly good defensively. Struggled to link up with Aarons, who also struggled to impress against this opposition. The one thing I like about him is that he looks to pick out the striker with a long ball.

  • 99 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:20 PM

I think Haidara is a decent squad player. Santon was always the best though.

  • 100 Tinman // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:20 PM

I’m a fan of Haidara too. Still very raw. I hope he gets plenty of chances this season, he certainly has the potential to be a great LB. All the tools. Love his Cruyff turn, wins us so many free kicks, which could be valuable with Mitro Thauv combination.

  • 101 WWSBRD // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:21 PM

It’s a shame if there’s ever a blog roast then I’d put u forward for host haha really tickled me that did

  • 102 Tinman // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:21 PM

Very mixed opinions on Haidara then! I heard he has a thumping shot, but never witnessed it

  • 103 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:22 PM

darlow put the back four under pressure with some bad passes….janmaat and thauvin linked well and obviuosly raving about thauvin and the fact he can deliver a decent ball!….lascelles and williamson and haidara steady….goofy not adventurous in the first half got a little better in second half tiote looked rusty but got better as half went on…..perez and dejong bright and clever and aarons never got out there right backs pocket….so not to disimilar to what u say

  • 104 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:23 PM

Santon would still be here if he was that good Ketsy. I think Haidara will improve with better quality around him. For all his faults he’s already got a couple of Assists and does try to take on the man near the byline. Just needs to know when it’s a good time to get the ball in. Still the best LB in the club.

  • 105 jayphoto // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:24 PM

Wasn’t a fan of haidara in France but hes a better player than I thought he’d be! In france he reminded me of the woeful Aly Cissokho but hes actually better defensively than i thought!
Needs to work on his final ball

  • 106 Toonfan8 // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:24 PM

Haidara for me is good young player, he has that athleticism that full backs need and is good going forward and still learning, he only can be better, for me, he is better prospect than Santon. Give this lad this season and he will prove that he is good enough for EPL.

  • 107 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:25 PM

Nice to see Jeff spending quality time sifting through the posts for gotchas! He’s only got your best interests at heart, you know.

  • 109 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:27 PM

I didn’t think Tiote was bad. He played his usual game, although he looked a little rusty, which is understandable.

  • 110 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:28 PM

always thought santon should of been tried at right back or right midfield my sell…..decent player but dont like full backs that have to check back on to there natural foot to cross a decent ball…always think that gives the advantage to the defender rather then the attacker.

  • 111 Munster Mag // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:29 PM

Toastie tks for that. Kets ur talking pants. Santon was a rubbish defender and i am glad he is gone. No spatial awareness, slow to tackle , bad header. Crap reader of the game

  • 112 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:30 PM

Aye, that sums it up. To be fair to Darlow, he wasn’t afraid to come and punch it. His kicking needs to improve before I’d fully trust him.

  • 113 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:31 PM

it’s surprising just how off the pace these formerly injured players are. I’m still not sure about Aarons, and I have some decent gripes against Tiote, but if they got a few good competitive games under their belt perhaps they could still be an integral part of the squad. I just get the feeling some of it is lack of motivation.

  • 114 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:31 PM

Minster don’t forget the part where he thought he was a winger! Pffffftt!

if haidara can put a run of games together and gets his sharpness back he myt change a few minds about him….but theres a few players that might do that….all comes down to games and sharpness and willingness to learn….hopefully they do

  • 117 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:34 PM

Good to see De Jong doing some talking and organising. Something we badly lack.

  • 118 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:34 PM

Haidara for me was set back a good season not just the injury but mentally by that horrible thug mcmancmanamcnaman. He’d be about there by now if it wasn’t for that.

  • 119 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:35 PM

i said to someone last night on here a darlows kickin….it must be a newcastle keeper thing coz krul is hardly the best as well….both need work

Anybody put in for that job as Jermain’s fridge loader?

  • 121 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:37 PM

thats a good shout about haidara….that injury wiped him out for a long while

  • 122 Lindisfarne // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:38 PM

I would go for that 433, make Janmaat wait for his opportunity to get back in to the squad although I can not believe that I am calling for relegated Central Defenders to be our main stay.

Would prefer a more robust and talented DCM than Anita but he deserves to continue. I am not sure if Sissoko will be available but he needs to be in a deeper staring position to push the team forward or higher up the pitch, likewise with Gini. Itchy the Bomb has to start as the main striker and greatly supported by Canary Boy and The Toe, who can cause a nuisance out wide, cross or cut inside.

If it goes t#ts up against Arsenal though 433 will never be allowed to see the light of day again om here, but it is a splendidly attacking line ip.

  • 123 Tsunki // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:38 PM

Springy funny thing is Elliot gets a lot of stick but he did a decent job as a stand in for quote some time. I liked his throwing when he first started, long, direct and low. And he kicked in a low arc too which seemed to be more successful in reaching his man . Nufc seemed to train that out of him though. Now he’s just a good KFC customer apparently. Not as good a stopper as Tim though.

  • 124 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:38 PM

siem de jong i think is a waste of money. his injury and illness completely destroyed him.

    he’s a mistake.

  • 125 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:41 PM

SDJ’s style just doesn’t seem suited for the Prem.

  • 126 Menelauos // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:41 PM

If we got Klaassen or Ferri. And a big commanding CB, Id say we have the righ back cover in Mbemba now. We just need someone to replace the hopefully outgoing Williamson, I’d take Dunk, but I want Niklas Sule of Hoffenheim, he’s already such an established and intelligent Centreback at 19, 6″5 and very strong for his age. The next Mertesaker. Exactly what we need.

  • 127 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:43 PM

a lot of people complain about elliot…but i thought he is what he is, a decent back up keeper….never really worried about that position when he came in to be fair to the lad

  • 128 WWSBRD // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:43 PM

Haidara for me is still getting over that challenge that could of ended his career, it was luck it didn’t. If his foot wasn’t planted his knee is gone, mentally that affected him a lot imo

Right now he should be rotation level but due to our transfer ‘strategy’ we aren’t able to do that but I still rate Haidara I reckon he can come good with the right support from midfield

  • 129 Menelauos // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:46 PM

Lindisfarne, if we had a centre mid with all of Sissoko’s physicality. But better footballing brain, and better at passing the ball around we’d be set. Something to be worked on in training.

  • 130 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:49 PM

unless we offload, loan out or sell centre halfs i’d be suprised if we bring in another centre half this window so maybe a ferri or banega type of player for midfield might be a better buy at the present time….coz i think that type of player will be cheaper then a beast of a centre half…..just a thought

  • 131 magscar // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:55 PM

It was and it seems to be in his nature but our organisation within a game really needs work as I think this is what leads to the slack passing and unforced errors. There was other experience on pitch e.g. Tiote, Williamson Goufran, Janmatt but most concentrate on their own game not others.

At both games I have been at all keepers kicking out to touchline was clearly worked on prior to game as part of their warmups. Despite a complete change of management and coaches this remains a hangover from previous seasons as I mentioned above.

I can’t get away from the feeling that it is current personnel at back and up front that creates this style (although I have noticed ball thrown out to full backs at times) but goal kicks invariably are picked up by a generally taller opposition midfield or CB’s when keeper kicks straight forward. Sissoko despite his physique isn’t at best challenging high balls into midfield nor are forwards although Mitro clearly is going to be important to us in that regard. So not just a keeper problem. Darlow did do some impressive punching last night mind.

  • 132 Menelauos // Aug 26, 2015 at 2:59 PM

    Sell Will, Gouffran, Tiote.
    Buy Ferri, Sule, Nordtveit.
That would be a team in Europe, all players that can only improve them selves and the team, and from Ashley’s point of view ability for resale and profit.

  • 133 SPRINGY // Aug 26, 2015 at 3:03 PM

i do like sissoko for what he brings…pace and directness… but if he toughened up and bossed a bit more he could b much more influencial player for us maybe macca has seen that and has an idea how to get that out of him…coz he was bangin on about sissoko’s importance and what a physique he has in a radio interview pre-season…unless he just fancies the bloke!!!!hahaha

  • 136 jaymucca // Aug 26, 2015 at 3:29 PM

Arsenal will be tough. They looked very good against Liverpool in all areas except for finishing (no doubt they will have been working on that), although Mignolet did have a very good game.

Anita, Colback and Wijnaldum should be our midfield 3. They have a lot of running in them. We need Sissoko working down the right hand side in both halves. Although I would be happy to see Thauvin start for us, I wonder if we are going to need a bit more cover for the full backs.

Mitrovic should definitely get the nod, and the defence should be the same as against Man United. I think it would be bad to change a defence after such a solid clean sheet

  • 137 martoon // Aug 26, 2015 at 3:31 PM

Jib @134 – Interesting that the writing style of Niall & Biffa is exactly the same now as it was then – mildly critical and sarcastic 🙂

  • 138 Ian Toon // Aug 26, 2015 at 3:41 PM

Blackley- Thauvin only has a left foot! So what – if he plays on the right he’s cutting in towards goal on the left backs wrong foot.
Arguably the most gifted player in football history, Diego Maradona was a one-footed maestro. Just watch his mazy run against England it consisted of twelve touches, all with his left foot.
I enjoy your views on football from SJP but you’ve got this one wrong. He’s got pace.
