This Could Be Newcastle’s Strongest Side Against Arsenal

3:29 pm, Thursday, August 27th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 99 Comments

With the last two games producing very good performances from two very different Newcastle sides, against Manchester United and Northampton Town – Steve McClaren will have a difficult job deciding what the team  should be for Saturday’s early kick-off game at home to Arsenal.

But we would be surprised if he makes too many changes from the side that drew 0-0 at Old Trafford, and will have to defend well against an always  good Arsenal side.

Arsene Wenger Arsenal+v+Liverpool+Premier+WV9n-uuzoall

Arsene Wenger – not impressed against Liverpool on Monday night

We assume Moussa Sissoko is fit again from his groin strain, and  he will likely come straight back into the side.

And with the great display of Florian Thauvin on Tuesday night, we think he will start in place of Gabby Obertan on Saturday, and he will be told to put those high pinpoint crosses over.

Arsenal will likely again have a makeshift central defense – probably former Saints player Calum Chambers and Brazilian Gabriel, who was signed in January from Villarreal.

It’s going to be interesting to see what defense Steve McClaren starts,  but there’s a decent chance it will be the same one that did so well at Old Trafford.

Here’s a likely team for Saturday:

Mbemba Taylor Coloccini (c) Haidara
Anita Colback
Sissoko Wijnaldum Thauvin
Subs: Darlow Janmaat Tiote Aarons de Jong Perez Cisse

That is some starting side – and the bench is also extremely strong.

For the subs bench we have left out Gabby Obertan which is probably unfair – but it was between Gabby and Ayoze – and yes – it’s getting hard to even be on the bench these days at Newcastle – always a very good sign.

It may also be tough on Janmaat leaving him out, after he has also just been left out of the Dutch squad.

The alternative defense would be more of what we expect to be Newcastle’s starting defense in the future, with the back four being Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini and Haidara.

In any case, the 18 players above are very good players and the four senior players we have brought in this summer are all in starting positions, and that’s what you want to see.

What would your team be for Saturday?

    Perez for sissoko..

  • 2 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:42 PM

Think we will see Obertan starting again on Saturday, McClaren rested his favourites against Northampton

  • 3 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:43 PM

Perez is an absolute must. He’s the only player we have who can retain the ball and move with it.

  • 4 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:43 PM

If Obertan starts we are already a man down. Offers virtually nothing.

  • 5 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:44 PM

every chance it will be the same team as man utd

  • 6 nightfa11 // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:46 PM

Sissoko is an average midfielder.. Just cos he looks like an all time star doesnt mean he deserves a starting place.. Like hot women..we keep giving them chances, even if they are idiots..But we keep having faith that they will come good..:-D stupid..sell him and buy a world class defensive midfielder..

  • 7 Charlietoon // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:49 PM

Thauvin must start over Obertan and I believe he will having been taken off fairly early in the cup game. I would shift Mbemba back into central defence alongside Collo, and put Tayls on the bench for Janmaat.

  • 8 Graeme // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:49 PM

To me, the weak link in Ed’s line up is Sissoko.

Toe Van can get down the left side and get balls into the box – sissoko can get down the right, but then it stops!!! Unless Mbemba can overlap and put some balls in, then we are almost commited to attacking down one side only.

If the arse play as well as they did against Luckypoo – we are in for a very hard match, against players who love to try and get in behind and through the defence. Collo could be in for a torrid afternoon!!!

  • 9 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:51 PM

Sissoko the enigma. On his day he is unstoppable and can win games almost single handedly. But you can never predict when those games will be and from what position. He would be a loss no doubt but does he fit into a team structure? I don’t think so.

  • 10 the broons // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:52 PM

Yeah I think you may be right, but thauvin in will give us more attacking potency which surely mcclaren can see for himself.

  • 11 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:57 PM

    the broons
if sissoko is’nt a 100% its an easier pick for macca to start that team that started at man utd…personally id want mbemba to cb bring janmaat think at home we need to try and get at them a bit

  • 12 doggyboi123 // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:57 PM

I’d play a midfield of wijnaldum on the right, de Jong in the centre and thauvin on the left. I’d play sissoko and colback behind him with colback sitting deep and sissoko pushing forward.

I’d start cisse upfront, I know mitrovic needs a goal for his confidence but I think at the minute he’s do great as a super sub as he’s so combative and would work on tired legs, as would Aarons with his pace

  • 13 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:58 PM

    Jib // Aug 27, 2015 at 8:36 AM

Colo should have no probs with Giroud who I don’t rate (watch him get a hat-trick now)

To paraphrase your previous – people live or die by the crap they post

  • 14 doggyboi123 // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:59 PM

I’d maybe even drop colback and drop wijnaldum into centre mid with sissoko and have Perez down the right wing

  • 15 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 3:59 PM

would start thauvin and perez wide left and right repectively and rain crosses in on there cb’s

  • 16 Graeme // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:01 PM

What about leaving Taylor on the bench, moving Chancer alongside Collo and re-instating Jaanmat at RB. It gives us the benefit of pace down the right and Jaanmat can deliver a ball – Chancer also has the pace and strength to cover at the back.

  • 17 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:04 PM

agree mate thats what said above…got to have ago not sit back or we’ll never get passed the our 18 yard line!

  • 18 Frank pingles come sock // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:05 PM

I love the way Ed says that’s some side!!

And a strong bench!! compared to who??

We are still 3 short of having a half decent side, maybe enough to finish 10th.

Without them we will be 13th / 14th at best.

We will get injuries as everybody does and our squad is too thin.

You can see that when Janamat got sent off!!

    My starting 11

    Janamat Mbemba Coloccini (c) Haidara
    Sissoko Colback
    Perez Wijnaldum Thauvin
Subs: Darlow Taylor Tiote Aarons de Jong Toney Cisse

We need a new left back – defo!
We need a new centre half – defo
We need a new centre midfielder as Anita/Colback are not good enough

By the way the new centre half Lascelles was/Is not the answer he couldnt jump and cwas ponderous on the ball.Ran like an iron robot (super stiff) looks hopeless

  • 19 JamesToon // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:07 PM

Thauvin needs to start of the right and Pérez on the left with Mbemba and Haidara overlapping them. Wijnaldum through the middle. Need to overload the flanks, create 2 v 1 or 3 v 2 situations. it’s so hard to defend against.

  • 20 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:07 PM

With the lack of exp. CB’s for Arsenal, as other have said we should be firing crosses in from both sides. If we are doing this then the one man you want on the pitch is De Jong at no.10. It may take both Arsenals CB’s to mark Mitro and none of Arsenals midfielders (defensive or otherwise!) will be able to match De Jong in the air. Wijnaldum still needs to play, he can drop in alongside Anita in CM.

  • 21 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:11 PM

    def=janmaat mbemba colo haidara
    def/mid=anita gini
    att/mid=perez dejong thauvin
    for= mitrovic

    something like that?

  • 22 phoonck // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:16 PM

Just for discussion, what do you guys think of this formation (3-4-2-1):

  • 23 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:20 PM

looks solid enough.. but looks more of a counter-attacking side with the front 3 pace

  • 24 Take a Chancel on me // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:20 PM

  • 25 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:22 PM

dont think aarons will get a start anytime soon still looks a little off the pace due to his injuries last year.. needs time

  • 26 Harry in Kosovo // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:22 PM

The start to this season has brought back my excitement for the Premier League again!!!

I truly think we actually have a chance in most games we will play this season. The vast amount of negativity has gone from most of the fans. My mates were at the game on Tuesday night and said the atmosphere is improving with every game ( I’ve not been since we got a hammering from Manure 2 seasons ago).

Looking forward to a win this weekend!! HWTL

  • 27 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:23 PM

Springy, yeah something like that, not sure about Perez’s crossing ability, doesnt really seem to do it much, Sissoko tends to cross on the deck, usually pulling it back. It would probably have to be Janmaat supplying the bullets from the right

  • 28 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:27 PM

Phoonck, thats some packed midfield! If your going to play 3 at the back one of the usual attacking benefits is that it allows you to play 2 up top without being outnumbered in midfield. That formation would certainly stop a team like Arsenal playing as they tend to play through the middle and not go wide. Might work a treat or might fail spectacularly!

  • 29 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:29 PM

tbh i prefer players to be natural footed in the wide area’s….thats why i put perez there…never like players having to cut inside or stop and switch it on to there better foot…..probs coz watchin solano whipping balls in for shearer spoilt me!!!lol

  • 30 hibbit // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:31 PM

any news sissoko fitness chronicle still saying he’s a big doubt

  • 31 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:33 PM

    not heard nowt hibbit mate

  • 32 phoonck // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:34 PM

I know teams haven’t been getting gd performances when using 3 center backs, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work for us! Since we all think Haidara isn’t the best left back, why not try with 3 center backs and push Janmaat and maybe Sissoko to wingbacks, since Sissoko has the pace and power to drive down that channel.

    Then how about this:

    Thauvin—de Jong

  • 33 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:35 PM

apparantly he was close to bein fit for man utd so unless he’s re-injured himself might be a bit of gamesmanship….keep the arse guessing!

  • 34 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:37 PM

Springy, all depends who you have up front in my opinion, theres no point having a beast in the air like Mitro and then playing inverted wingers, as you say nothing better to see than a Solano or Robert cross being nutted home.
On the other hand if your playing someone like Perez up top theres no point firing high balls into the box and its usually better to have wingers on their wrong side who come inside and thread balls through the defensive line.

  • 35 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:41 PM

true but im thinking mitro is goin to be a permanent fixture so width for crosses and midfielders running in support probs best option with him..can always switch it……but i do like old school!!lol

  • 36 lesh // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:42 PM

Maybe Carver, an Englishman who’s managed at a high level, might be wise to take heed of Wenger and work abroad for a while.

You never know, he might even learn what humility’s all about at the very least.

Come to think of it, maybe Pardew might even benefit from such an experience.

  • 37 toon kk // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:44 PM

When you look at our defence, we know we could be stronger, but it’s not necessarily quality that’s lacking but pace in defence, we get cut apart against fast forwards.

  • 38 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:44 PM

    speaking of solano

  • 39 toonicle // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:44 PM

Sissoko does seem to be getting squeezed out of the team a bit. Thauvin or Perez should play over him on the right, he’s never going to get ahead of Gini or even De Jong in the No. 10 role, and seems to go missing too often when played CM even though he should be a great box to box asset. I’d say that’s the best place for him now, i’d like to see us try Gini and him at CM with De Jong ahead of them picking out the perfect pass for their overlapping runs.

  • 40 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:47 PM

lesh…I think they are both lost courses!

…Carver has even been to Canada to no effect what so ever 😉

  • 41 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:47 PM

if he toughens up and works on his close control i’d agree with you mate…worth havin a look at..but would have up his game

  • 42 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:49 PM

I think that line-up is quit plausible, but if it was me then I would think about playing Sis next to Anita and Gini in midfield and playing Perez and Toe wan out wide as forwards!

  • 43 toonicle // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:52 PM

Might be worth a try when we play one of the newly promoted teams and see how it works out, we wouldn’t be missing pace from De Jong being in there if the two of them we’re running past him looking for a through pass or De Jong can work it wide for a cross in to Mitro.

  • 44 pawl250 // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:52 PM

I think our best side we could start is

    Janmaat Mbemba Coloccini Haidara
    Wijnaldum Anita
    Sissoko De Jong Thauvin

    We will most likely start

    Janmaat Mbemba Coloccini Haidara
    Anita Colback
    Obertan Wijanldum Thauvin

  • 45 Tuttelbom // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:53 PM

    What about this setup?
Doesnt think Colback has impressed too much lately to be honest.

look lads i know you all do you bit on football manager but this is the real world sissoko will never make a FB/WB if he plays till he’s a 100 can’t tackle wont tackle please stop putting players in positions the cannot play arsenal would have a field day with him there big lad looks the part but just a big softie

  • 47 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:54 PM

not sure if cisse fit had bug for northampton

  • 48 pawl250 // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:55 PM

Think alot of people slating De Jong for no pace are naive.

Shearer used to have no pace to his game and yet is regarded our greatest ever player.

You could name loads of similar players, like Silva, Fabregas, Gerrard, Lampard

All have fairly average pace yet could dictate games. De Jong is like those and keeps a level head. Dangerous in and around the box, can pass the ball well and reads the game to take up great positions.

We have no one like him in our squad. If fully fit he would be one of the first players on the team sheet for me.

It all depends how fit he actually is though.

  • 49 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:56 PM

    SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 11:31 AM

  • 50 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:57 PM

do you think sissoko could play cm along side anita or colback sort of area?…..i think he may be able to if he toughens up and works on his touch and control

  • 51 toon kk // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:58 PM

Obertan must shine in training, S mc seems to rate him very highly, maybe he can see something we can’t?

  • 52 pawl250 // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:59 PM

Sissoko is probably the most ideal player built to play in CM role, he actually has alot of similar traits to the likes of Toure. YET he has no determination like them to hound the ball…..

He is a lazy player, and for me the best place for him is the wing. He uses his pace and power, and actually beats his man. He had a strong season a couple of year ago for Pardew managing to be in the top 5 for “most created chances”. Shame we did not have the players to finish it off!!

  • 53 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 4:59 PM

think ya right about de jong…but his injuries have knocked his fitness badly and could be a while before he’s back to his absolute best unfortunately….but lookin forward to seeing play

  • 54 toon kk // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:00 PM

the premier league is much quicker now.

  • 55 toonicle // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:01 PM

Pawl don’t get me wrong wasn’t calling De Jong out on pace at all, he should be our go to No. 10 behind Mitro has great passing ability reads the game well and seems to like running into the box for headers as well which makes Thauvin an even better asset out wide. Just can’t figure a good way to get him and Gini and Sissoko in the team together.

  • 56 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:02 PM

Pawl, To be fair Gerrard had bags of pace, but there are a lot of similarities with Lampard. You don’t need to speed to be able to ghost into the box and get on the end of things, just a good footballing brain to see the space. Bergkamp was slow as anything but he played the no. 10 to perfection

  • 57 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:04 PM

dabiza’s is still lookin for the ball now….when bergkamp flicked it round him and left for dead!!

  • 58 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:04 PM

Toon KK, he does well in the bleep tests, maybe his selection is based on that because it cant be for what he deilvers on the pitch!

  • 59 archaeomag // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:05 PM

Not sure about the line up -but I think this is a big test for SM

Arsenal can be beaten only if we get the tactics and approach correct, so its not so much down to the which players – but what they do on the field – which should be down to the manager.
Look at the way Perez has been playing – perhaps not his natural game, but doing his job in the team.
On the same note Mitrovic was amazingly controlled and did not retaliate to being knocked about a bit, so perhaps some credit due to the manager is due there too.
We might also find out if we got a good deal with Thauvin – what was the name of guy who went the other way?

Hopefully the arrival of Thauvin will banish Obrturon in to obscurity, I would like to think that this competition for his place would gee him up but from what I’ve heard he was absolute garbage again. If he can’t turn it on against his old club with a new signing itching to take his place then when can he.

That’s a gd alternative having Coloccini in there since he has lost a yard in pace. Although Coloccini may at times go missing in games, but he’s our best leader in a defence line up and I would prefer him to lead the defence line to be honest. I would not have Taylor marshal our defence as he tends to be rash and poor in decision making and Mbemba may be good but we need experience in there.

  • 75 SPRINGY // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:22 PM

  • 76 SUTTY1978 // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:36 PM

I’m not one for thinking experience is the most important quality. If you are poor at something even after doing it for 10 years, is that better than someone who is good at it but hasn’t been doing it for long.
Who would you want cooking your breakfast? Your wife who has burnt your toast for the last 20 years or a 21 year old sous chef who can whip up a mean omelette?

  • 77 rowly // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:45 PM

    My team would be:

    Janmaat collo mbemba dummett

    Wiji colback

    Sissoko de jong thauvin

De Jong played really well v Northampton with some excellent movement and passing so if we can get wiji settled in as a box to box we have a great attacking side.
Sissoko looks loads better as a winger – Pardew got that one right 😀 he doesn’t have the defensive qualities a midfielder needs

  • 78 toonicle // Aug 27, 2015 at 5:47 PM

Rowly- No start for Perez? I’d drop Sissoko myself and play Thauvin and Perez wide, both have been playing well and Perez had some excellent defensive work done against ManU

  • 82 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Aug 27, 2015 at 6:13 PM

De Jong when fully fit before he came to us was actually a faster player than Cabaye but because of his injuries he just might not have the energy to play a full 90 at full pelt !

Especially as every other team plays 3 in the middle you need to have your no 10 fighting for the ball high up the pitch not sure if he will be able to do that in this league will be more useful coming off the bench or against weaker teams where we see more of the ball

Would not start him against Arsenal we need all players to have pace and energy to match them in the first half

  • 83 the broons // Aug 27, 2015 at 6:23 PM

I have a feeling a lot of people are dropping Janmaat from their team because of his howler against Swansea.

He was our best defender last season, and i think should be straight back into the side.

Even though we battled well against Man U there was still room for improvement as far as keeping the ball goes, Perez should keep his place and Thauvin should come in for Obertan. Janmaat in and mbemba replaces Taylor in centre back. Simple as that really.

  • 84 Jail for Ashley // Aug 27, 2015 at 6:32 PM

janmatt got sent off he shouldn’t walk straight back into the team neither should sissoko if fit given the last team didn’t get

for to long players would come into the team because of who they are not because they deserved it
the last team didn’t get beat and it was a good away point

I think it was a case of not just who they were but the fact that there was no one else to take their place, how many times after a four or five goal hammering was the same team picked for the next game.

Not for me thanks. I want Mbemba in the centre for his pace. Janmaat is not a great defender ( better going forward ) but he isnt a dutch international for noting. I also think Perez might feature ahead of Sissoko for fitness reasons. If necessary, we simply have to get aarons and thauvin on the pitch together at some stage. The key here is to feed the beast.

Just watched that solano video on youtube. The strike against inter milan was on, they reckon the bars still shaking now. Never seen a harder volley before or since.
Well done digging that one out.

Solano i salute you sir, hope the trumpet playing still going well. Top man

We kept a clean sheet against Man Utd more due to their inability to work the ball rather than our last ditch defending

    Jail for Ashley/beermonkey

I am a big believer that players should be picked for performance and not reputation. However I generally feel like Janmaat would have learnt his lesson from Swansea.

I know I lay into him and WIilliamson a lot, but I know what good defending is and Taylor isn’t a good defender. He will give you a great game every now and then because he puts his body on the line always.
However as far as reading the game goes the lad hasn’t got a clue.

Mbemba still naive as expected for someone his age, but you can see with him already he does the simple stuff much better than Taylor and has greater atrributes to boot.

Partially agree with you. I still think for the game on a whole Krul was actually our best player certainly for the first 20 minutes but seems everyone had forgot about that spell by the time the game had finished.

  • 92 WWSBRD // Aug 27, 2015 at 7:04 PM

Krul was good aye that save for Smallings(?) header was very good

    Team for Weekend

    Janmant Colo Mbemba Haidara
    Wijnaldum Anita
    Toevan De Jong Perez
Think Sissokos not injured and will be sold to balance books imo

  • 98 rowly // Aug 27, 2015 at 9:30 PM

Toonicle – Perez is playing well at the moment but I still have doubts over his end product. I can’t remember him setting a goal up although I’m sure he will have but sissoko created most chances when he played right wing for the season. He played well v Southampton too. There’s not much in it though and wouldn’t be dissappointed to see Perez. Do you think Perez is a striker or winger?

  • 99 ITUNDERASHELL // Aug 27, 2015 at 10:10 PM

Its a encouraging to see we have options on the field and players fighting to start. I agree De Jong when up to speed will play behind Mitrovic. I also think Perez will take the wide right role and make it his own in the future. Sissoko, for all his power and pace is the square peg in round hole for me and would sell in January and bring in either a CB, LB or DM.
I must say I am impressed by the way things are going and can understand the three window approach.
