McClaren Explains How Heroes Are Made At Newcastle

Florian Thauvin has made an impact in the two games he has played so far for Newcastle, and on Tuesday night against Northampton Town he was the match-winner,  scoring the first goal after just three minutes and setting up the other three goals in the 4-1 win.

We are hoping Florian can start in today’s tough home game against Arsenal, and we’ll see how he does against one of the top teams in England in Arsenal, who finish in the top four every season – well at least since Arsene Wenger joined them back in 1996.

Steve McClaren has today talked about Florian Thauvin and says he can become a top player at Newcastle –  a hero if Newcastle can become a winning side:

“He has certainly got the ability, he is only 22,” “He has got the potential. He needs to do it now on a consistent basis.”

“I thought he did very well at Old Trafford and very well on Tuesday against Northampton Town in the League Cup.”

“We are trying to bring players here who will excite the crowd. We are trying to find new heroes.”

“We still have a long way to go to achieve that, but fans are encouraged by what they have seen so far.”

“Thauvin has played at every level for France up to U21, so he has got that pedigree.” “You saw it on Tuesday night with his set-pieces, his thinking and the way he can see a pass.”

“He’s one of those people who you have to keep on the park,  because he’s going to provide that moment.”

“The other times he will drive you mad, but that’s what these players bring.” “The most important thing is to have a winning team.”

“You progress from a team that competes to one that wins, and wins regularly. After that you win trophies and you get heroes.”

“Heroes only come when you get success. We’re trying to create a team which can provide that.”

“We’re in the very early stages of that and I’m still learning about my best players and my best system.”

“But I want to sit down and watch the team play good football and I want individuals to excite me and get me out of my seat.”

“Florian can be one of them.”

Well said Steve McClaren!

The head coach has a difficult team selection today, after two good performances by Newcastle over the last week.

We hope Florian Thauvin starts the game today, and gives Arsenal a (very) tough time of it, and drives Arsenal and Wenger mad – not Steve McClaren mad.
