McClaren Explains How Heroes Are Made At Newcastle

9:49 am, Saturday, August 29th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 44 Comments

Florian Thauvin has made an impact in the two games he has played so far for Newcastle, and on Tuesday night against Northampton Town he was the match-winner,  scoring the first goal after just three minutes and setting up the other three goals in the 4-1 win.

We are hoping Florian can start in today’s tough home game against Arsenal, and we’ll see how he does against one of the top teams in England in Arsenal, who finish in the top four every season – well at least since Arsene Wenger joined them back in 1996.

Steve McClaren has today talked about Florian Thauvin and says he can become a top player at Newcastle –  a hero if Newcastle can become a winning side:

“He has certainly got the ability, he is only 22,” “He has got the potential. He needs to do it now on a consistent basis.”

“I thought he did very well at Old Trafford and very well on Tuesday against Northampton Town in the League Cup.”

“We are trying to bring players here who will excite the crowd. We are trying to find new heroes.”

“We still have a long way to go to achieve that, but fans are encouraged by what they have seen so far.”

“Thauvin has played at every level for France up to U21, so he has got that pedigree.” “You saw it on Tuesday night with his set-pieces, his thinking and the way he can see a pass.”

“He’s one of those people who you have to keep on the park,  because he’s going to provide that moment.”

“The other times he will drive you mad, but that’s what these players bring.” “The most important thing is to have a winning team.”

“You progress from a team that competes to one that wins, and wins regularly. After that you win trophies and you get heroes.”

“Heroes only come when you get success. We’re trying to create a team which can provide that.”

“We’re in the very early stages of that and I’m still learning about my best players and my best system.”

“But I want to sit down and watch the team play good football and I want individuals to excite me and get me out of my seat.”

“Florian can be one of them.”

Well said Steve McClaren!

The head coach has a difficult team selection today, after two good performances by Newcastle over the last week.

We hope Florian Thauvin starts the game today, and gives Arsenal a (very) tough time of it, and drives Arsenal and Wenger mad – not Steve McClaren mad.

🙂

Steve doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
The blog expert Sutty called Thauvin a turd.

  • 2 lochinvar // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:57 AM

Poor little Jose , those nasty people at Everton won’t sell to him so he’s throwing his toys out the pram.. Only problem is that Stones is a Full Back ( I think ) and Abdennour a CB , so a other made up story.
And Liverpool were interested but no mention of Newcastle ?
Looks like the Daily Mail is having a huffy fit because the Mirror is our media partner.

Chelsea are set to give up their attempt to sign John Stones and instead take Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour in a deal worth £15million.
The Premier League champions have decided to look elsewhere for a top-class central defender after Everton turned down their latest bid worth £38m.
The decision will come not only as a blow to Stones but also to Liverpool who have been linked with the 26-year-old Tunisian international but will now find their efforts thwated.

Think of virtually any winger you like from France or Holland and you could buy them for less than we are paying for this useless turd.

read an article at the start of the week about a 16 y old swedish center half who was on trial this week and he stated he was being joined by a finn and they were playing 2 games tue and friday ,fridays against ghana .only thing i have seen is kyle cameron said on chronic good 3 -1 win at boro yesterday .anyone know how they got on.

  • 9 WWSBRD // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:12 AM

Expecting much the same as last week today except Arsenal are better at scoring goals which is a worry

  • 10 Munster Mag // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:13 AM

    Jib, nice one. 🙂

Team for today i think: Krul, Janmaat, Mbemba, Colo, Haidara, Coback, Anita, Wini, Sissoko, Perez, Mitrovic

Steve correctly will want pace in his back for so will want Mbemba central. He will want muscles Sissoko to pressure and intimidate and bring speed and power to midfield but that depends which Sissoko plays. Mind you he will want to impress Wenger, who wont want him near his team because he’s not good enough, correctly. Wijnaldum will be our best recruit. What a talent this man is.

  • 11 Munster Mag // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:13 AM

    Prediction 2-2

  • 12 the broons // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:14 AM

    Jib

Sutty was probably just thinking about his flop season last year which was on my mind when he did initially come here. However his debut plus his perceived potential at one time (considering he is still just 22) shows there could be something there.

Either way its a massive gamble from the club, probably one of the biggest in Ashley’s tenure.

What I am trying to say for those out there is, judge him after a season not after 1 game against league 2 opposition.

  • 13 SUTTY1978 // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:15 AM

Stop it JIB, i may run off and cry.
He’s played one game against league 2 opposition. Armstrong is banging them in at a level above that and he cant get a sniff in our team.
Lets revisit this after 10 PL games. I’d be more than happy to be proved wrong.

  • 14 the broons // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:21 AM

well ye na giroud is gonna score so already our job is made harder.

  • 15 Jib // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:21 AM

    Sutty
I have my reservations as well
However it is totally unnecessary and a bit juvenile (who knows you may be a juvenile) to call a player you’ve never seen in the flesh a useless turd.

  • 16 Douglas // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:22 AM

    3-2 today. We win!

  • 17 geordie157 // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:26 AM

Can understand why some fans are doubting Thauvin is worth the money spent on him but I think he’ll be a great signing.

And if it means Obertan not starting games even better! Bet he bloody starts today now.

  • 18 the broons // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:26 AM

    SUTTY1978

I with you there big time, hey if Thauvin turns out to be a world beater I will more than happily eat humble pie as I want the kid to turn out class.

But he struggled to make an impact in a weaker league last year, so undoubtedly needs to start improving.

  • 19 the broons // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:29 AM

    geordie157

Ahh he has to start today instead of obertan. More than likely be up against bellerin which is interesting because, on a negative side he probably won’t track back most of his runs, but on the positive side there will be holes exploited for him to go and explore.

  • 20 Essex Geordie Bill // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:38 AM

Like everyone else I am optimistic about todays game.

The only niggle is the lack of playing time our lads have had together.

It’s SMs endeavours to try to get us playing good proper football that will probably see us coming unstuck against teams who have been doing it for years like Arsenal and Swansea.

It’s a work in progress so we may have to be patient unless the team do miraculously well and start getting it right now.

    Here’s hoping

    HWTL!

  • 21 1949BH PROUDTOBEAGEORDIE // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:44 AM

would like steve to prove what he said about nobodys place being set in stone by playing perez and thauvin and leaving sissoko on the bench.

  • 22 WWSBRD // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:44 AM

Why is everyone so optimistic about beating Arsenal today?

  • 23 Mr Funk // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:45 AM

I would love NUFC to win today but i think it will be 1-2 to Arsenal.

  • 24 SUTTY1978 // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:48 AM

JIB, i would have thought with your detective skills you may have worked out from my name that i’m 37 so not quite in the juvenile category!
To be honest i was just really annoyed with the signing because i think this will be our last signing of the summer and like i think everybody else know that we have more pressing needs than for a winger.
However as i have alluded to in previous posts my biggest bug bear is that we sign scorers rather than creators and theres not really been any creativity in the team for years. If this las fills that hole i’ll be over the moon.

  • 25 Jib // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:49 AM

Good stream for the game for those who cannot get it on TV.

Why not? No harm in a bit of optimism, after sixty years of disappointment I continue to hope for the golden dawn. It’s got happen at some point.

    Had enough golden rain. 🙂

Please do not ever compare S.De Jong to this player, he will never be this quality, dont get me wrong, Siem is very good player, clever, but Dennis was genius on the football pitch and for me the best Arsenal player in Premier League. I loved watching his game

  • 30 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:09 AM

Huge mistake not bringing a CB in…but that’s typical Newcastle for you! They will gamble on what we have getting us through!

…history should have thought them otherwise!

  • 31 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:13 AM

    Yo…that’s calling kidding yourself!

    It’s a Geordie religion 😉 lol

*that one will come back and bid me seeing as anything can happen in football (one could argue there’s a chance we could win)

  • 32 switch365 // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:18 AM

Wonder what the odds would be on Giroud getting crocked in the warm-up and Beast scoring within 10 seconds

  • 33 WWSBRD // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:19 AM

    EGB
I dont get the logic behind it though, there seems to be an air of confidence over beating a largely better team. I think it’ll end in tears and no doubt the squad will be back to being the worst we have ever seen while on the road to relegation…probably after the Arsenal first goal about 10 minutes in

    jesper
Yeah seems to be mate am a bit lost in why though. I agree there is a chance we can beat Arsenal but its a pretty low chance

  • 34 Shot Bru // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:22 AM

    McLaren talkin about heroes already…

How about trying to win a game first before becoming heroes…horse and cart or something like that…

Totally agree with Jesper.. Where the Feck is the other CB!!!

  • 35 hibbit // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:28 AM

like most i am happy with the signing we have made but still think the main problems have not been addressed a quality cb first team lb and cover for rb disappointed Mc either cannot or will not deal with this …….todays game is not as easy as many on here think arsenal are not going to justs roll over if we get any points we will have to earn them

  • 36 JDdubai // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:31 AM

Thauvin has turned up for the match in a tuxedo this week 🙂

Think there is a trend starting..

  • 37 AncientC // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:38 AM

McClaren should make those clowns wear their Tuxedos on the bench if neither of them start today.

  • 38 ilovetoon8788 // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:39 AM

erm….what’s with this new comparison of Siem with… Dennis Bergkamp?

if Siem can turn out to have the quality 1/4 of Bergkamp. he’d already be a star at Newcastle.

  • 39 JDdubai // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:42 AM

Wow Ancient, you’re a miserable turd arent ya..

Also u said if neither of them starts, so that means you want them both to start right? Or are you illiterate as well as a depressing?

Blimey mate, I’m getting a picture in my mind of that melancholy priest in Father Ted from your posts 🙂

  • 41 firebug666 // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:45 AM

Team v Arsenal: Krul • Janmaat Mbemba Coloccini (c) Haidara • Anita Colback • Sissoko Wijnaldum Thauvin • Mitrovic #

“Also u said if neither of them starts, so that means you want them both to start right? Or are you illiterate as well as a depressing?”

JDdubai, first of all I was joking, secondly… what does “Also u said if neither of them starts, so that means you want them both to start right? Or are you illiterate as well as a depressing?” even mean?

I suggest that you work on your reading comprehension, that way I would not have to embarrass you on a widely read public forum.
