Steve McClaren’s Post Game Interview – Video

7:39 pm, Saturday, August 29th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 134 Comments

Here is Steve McClaren’s interview after the game today, when for the second time in three games we had a player sent off in the first half – and that was the game – we lost 1-0 with an own goal after 52 minutes from the unlucky Coloccini.

aleksandar mitrovic sent off arsenal

Aleksandar Mitrovic – sent off today

But the lads played well once again and were very tight at the back, after last week’s heroic 0-0 draw at Old Trafford when we managed to keep 11 men on the pitch.

With 11 men on the pitch today, and the way we played, Newcastle could have been in this game today, and the red card was very unfortunate – and after only 16 minutes!

It looked ominous early on when referee Marriner gave Moussa Sissoko a yellow card after only two minutes, and it was for a challenge that didn’t even look like a foul.

The standard of referring in the world’s most popular sports league has to improve,  and quickly too.

Here is Steve McClaren’s interview after the game when he talks about the red card.

Just back in from the match, ref spoilt the game today but lets not take anything away from the lads they played their socks off today and played as a team defending and attaking shame the final ball was poor or was not played. Great team performance today we look a solid unit and it took a deflection to beat our 10 men. Mariner should never ref a prem game again.

  • 2 toon22 // Aug 29, 2015 at 7:46 PM

Mariner will be praised by pundits and other refsa for making the correct calls.

Its blatant the guy might as well have had an Arsenal shirt on.

Imho the league wants to shape how it will pan out this year, were suposed to be in that bottom 5 teams avoiding the drop at the end of the season. And they dont want Chelsinki running away with it.

    Job done,its a farce.

Jail for Ashley will probably tell us we 1didn’t spend properly in 2012 or somesuch important stuff like that.

Here this calling each other names business is getting ridiculously boring now.
This is a space for measured debate and comment in relation to all things football and NUFC, of which I enjoy reading most of the time. I don’t understand why it is straying away from the football and onto who’s the biggest prick.
Some of yous need to properly grow up

  • 5 clinath@ed // Aug 29, 2015 at 7:56 PM

Bit early on the season to be panicking boys n girls. Looking at the table the bottom half of the table are in relegation form…..and we’ve had possibly the hardest start.
    We’ll be good.

  • 6 Jib // Aug 29, 2015 at 7:58 PM

In BT’s ref’s truck today folks we have Howard Webb who allowed Holland to do a Kung Fu attack on the Spanish team in a WCF and also gave 3 yellows to the same player in a World cup game

  • 7 Jib // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:01 PM

It gets like that because we had 10 heroes out there today and some folk can only talk about what Llambias had for breakfast 5 years ago.

  • 8 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:02 PM

Yeah we are playing better football than last year building from the back instead of hoofball new buys except for Mitrovic settle in well – but – my main worry is – creating chances and when they come along putting them away

  • 9 why oh why // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:04 PM

that ref today was an absoloute disgrace .
been to the the game not happy.
spoke to gooner fans after even they said he was biased.
    the man needs struck off.
if we had 11 for 90 mins we would have done them.
bumped into thauvan and his very lovely women after the match . obv got a selfie . what a nice kid. he agreed the ref was shit , and by god his girl friend is niiiice

  • 10 SPRINGY // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:05 PM

    my view
    KRUL=solid performance
janmaat=good maybe lacking a bit of sharpness
mbemba=solid, strong and looks like a cb we’ve needed
colo=solid, looks fitter then all of last year tbh and more like a defender under macca so credit where its due, unlucky for the goal
    haidara=solid,and improving week on week
colback=grafted tirelessly, better then he has been this season
anita=grafted, good performance and always trys to look to pass it forward, not much in front of him to pass to unfortunately
sissoko=good today, showed more aggression and full of running, thought his booking was as bad as mitrovics,as to say very soft for me
gini=looks like he is a yard quicker in mind and pace then people around him,and surprisingly strong…very impressed with his displays this season
thauvin=worked hard and showed strength and movement, does’nt look as lightweight as i thought
mitrovic=well…..didnt show much and the ball was coming back off him far to easy before his sending off,the sending in my opinion was a clumsy challenge but it was very similar to sissoko’s so should of been the same result
perez, cisse, dejong=were’nt on long but looked willing to work but hardly going to see the best out of them due to the circumstances

ref=wanted to be the star of the show, and at times looked like he was on arsenal payroll, bought everything the arsenal players said, dived and moaned about

arsenal=great passing, great movement, technically superior but lacked a end product and for me the dissapointing thing was there constant moaning, diving, trying to get players booked or sent off really soured my opinion of a side that dont need to do it,they’ve been unbeaten for 13 games and won 11 away from home…dont need to cheat very dissapointed by there attitude.

newcastle worked hard, defended well and really looked like a team for the first time in a long time this season, despite the results….still, the players need to take responsibility and learn to play smarter

If 2 weeks ago someone offered me 1 point from Man U away and Arsenal home, conceding only 1 goal, I’d have snapped their hand off.

  • 12 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:13 PM

Thing about today is everyone will say how bad arsenal are and not who well we played with 10 men for most of the game.

  • 21 beautifulmind // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:23 PM

the ref obviously spoiled everything on what could have been a cracking game. he was inconsistent with his bookings and bought arsenal players theatrics everytime so easily. He was very very poor today. Mitrovich reputation followed him as no benefit of the doubt was given to him in that circumstance in what was a clumsy challenge with no intent. On a positive note great endeavour from the guys pulling together and fighting as a team. nothing to panic about imo wel come good and should finish around 8th place having seen all mid table teams be just as inconsistent but without the quality players we have bought in.

  • 22 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:24 PM

I thought we were outstanding from back to front. Ref robbed us but it would have been totally different with 11-11, arsenal were set up to play on the counter attack, they weren’t designed for breaking down a wall.

To nit pick, wish krul would work on kicking. Janmaat dallied when we went forward. Thought Perez should have been on sooner.

But thought Steve handled it well. Good solid interview at the end. Supported us fans and the team. Omens look decent for the season. We’ve had the toughest start of anybody

  • 27 ronaldo aarons // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:30 PM

Never saw the game but have caught up on the tackle. To me, the ref has not played a game of football in his life!! Tackles such as these are fairly common when I play especially in a fast paced game so too see it given as a red is quite surprising. Bit of a joke decision like I’m reading about the rest of his performance was. As for arsenal going to ground easily, this is a common occurrence for the past 3 or so seasons. They fall down dying then back up to quickly to foul our players and dget away with free kicks and yellows.

  • 30 BandB // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:39 PM

It will be interesting to see what happens against West Ham.
Defenders winning man of the match awards tells its own story.
I worry that the rather slow and deliberate build-up play of Man Utd and Arsenal was easier for every man behind the ball defending to cope with than the more direct style with crosses employed by Swansea.
We have signed three players of higher quality, and kudos for that. We will improve as they settle. But the same is true of other clubs too.
When Chancel went on his wonderful run today, he, and I, looked in vain for someone who had kept up with him. Where was the overlap?
This is not going to click into place and become a Rolls Royce overnight once our tricky start is out of the way.
But there is more enterprise and spirit in some sections of the team that gives hope we won’t be folding as easily as we have in past seasons. IF, that is, we can score the goals that will get us a win.
We have spent a lot, but there is a lot of money swilling about. As a fan, I still think one more visit to the well would be a case of a stitch in time saving nine.
I would to see heads starting to go down because we are doing our best and still getting beat..

These decisions ruin games especially so early on…it’s a shame really (I am sure the Ref didn’t mean to ruin the game)

…will be interesting to see if SM will be appealing it. One could fear it was only a red because it was Mitrovic.

  • 34 geordieboy83 // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:45 PM

What would be your priority for a signing? For me it has to be an upgrade on colback(no disrespect to the lad) or push wiji in there and use de Jong as no10.

  • 35 eaststandgeordie1982 // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:46 PM

i would be over the moon if we got 10th, the crowd and the team were great today its good to look forward to going to games again. I see us having a good season there will be lows but we are changing they way we play so it will take time, today we looked like a team that is finally being coached and we made positive subs not ones that say we are just going to sit back.

  • 36 croftus5678 // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:51 PM

    @33 jesper

the problem i have now is that we was screaming out for a shearer esk physical striker like mitrovic and we finally got him only for the ref’s to decide any contact at all is a foul !

now just like tiote the ref’s have a pre formed opinion where no matter how good he is and through no fault of his own we could find him being more of a hinderance than a help as the ref’s mind will always be 60% against the player.

  • 37 BandB // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:52 PM

In my perfect world, we would have signed Rolan and someone to play where Colback plays. Just someone who can set up play as well as break it up and allow us to compete 10 yards higher up the pitch. Which is the root of our defensive and offensive failings. Even a Lee Bowyer would do.

  • 38 the broons // Aug 29, 2015 at 8:54 PM

The leage decided they wanted us to have a bad start hence the fixture, they aint random.
The ref was just doing what the league wants,as for Mitro hes just an easy target for refs that have an agenda.
Its a farce, they want to have a block buster chrimbo and end of season where the top few can still win it right to the last day,and a bottom 5 ish who all could go down right till the last game.
It makes good viewing and sells.

Atm they are making sure that happens, its all bout the TV rights, its not different to WWE.

  • 43 BandB // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:01 PM

I think if we play Wjnaldum as a deep-lying playmaker we would take away half his game. He could be the best box-to-box midfielder in the division and I hope to see him given the chance to prove that. Did I not read that he doesn’t want to play there?

  • 44 Toon Tang // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:01 PM

Was a 0-0 game today at the very least. The lads performed well going down to 10, If only that shite oxtail-chambermaid shot had carried on 10 yards wide like were it was originally heading.

    0-0 all day

  • 45 toon22 // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:02 PM

Anyone can see it plain as day atm with all the crazy decisions and the obvious bias reporting to cover over the cracks.

They intend Arsenal and Man City to be near the top with Chelsinki late challengers.

  • 46 Toon Tang // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:04 PM

  • 47 geordieboy83 // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:06 PM

I think he stated his preferred position is no10 but has said he can play anywhere in the middle. I honest believe he could be another Gerard but with a bit more class in his play. Think a mix of Gerard, Xabi alonso and sneijder. That’s what I believe he could be. And with siem in the no10 he is class.

  • 48 toon22 // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:07 PM

Both point to a pre chosen plan.

  • 49 JackButler // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:09 PM

The red card was not unfortunate Ed, it was the result of a blatant act of sheer stupidity by a player who has more than stamped his name on this league in the wrong way.

I’m all for players showing their intent and bing physical, the reality however is that utter stupidity results in red cards

  • 54 croftus5678 // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:21 PM

sadly i think the non penalty to arsenal had the ref’s mind turned from that moment ! he imo wanted arsenal to be 1-0 up in any way possible after he knew he had made the mistake.

i cant call any of our player as a hell of a lot of them have greatly improved there games esp krul / hairdryer.

with 11 men on the field who’s to say who we can not beat if they play like they did with that much conviction.

  • 55 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:24 PM

Although I like the way mcclaren talks & comes across, one thing I don’t agree is how he says things like Mitrovic has a bit of a devil in him, or he’s got 2 yellows & a red in his appearances. He should be sayin to the press, it’s only a matter of time b4 he starts banging them in, & nobody will remember any fouls he’s done. He shouldn’t be looked at as a mischievous guy, he should be looked at for his superb footballing abilities, & it’s only a matter of time b4 he shows that.
Let’s encourage him on the field rather than off the field for his character. We don’t want him looking like a balotteli

  • 56 BandB // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:35 PM

If these conspiracy theories are correct about also-ran clubs being on the receiving end of shocking and biased refereeing decisions worked out in advance by the Premier league and Sky, I would be deeply upset.
Deeply upset that we are now regarded as league makeweights.
There is a way to change that perception, of course, and that is for our club not to regard itself as a league makeweight.

  • 57 Thump // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:36 PM

@Shadow Shearer: I agree, but if the question is “What do you make of Mitrovic’ discipline?”, the answer probably shouldn’t be “Well, Steve, I think it’s only a matter of time before he starts banging in the goals” because you’re quite clearly avoiding the question, and that looks like you’re out of ideas (see: “we was tired”).

I said on another thread a while back that Mitrovic is getting booked because he’s being forced into dodgy positions in order to get on the ball. If he had some proper service, it wouldn’t be an issue.

Regardless, I’m not worried about the result. I expected nothing from it (and it took a deflection to beat Krul, after all) and we have a tough start to the season. Not time to worry.

  • 58 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:38 PM

    Shadow Shearer

I would agree with that 100 pc he should be bigging him up!

On Mitro, for me he is what we need, was that a straight red today, IMHO, no… by the letter of the law then yes but a ref has got to use common sense. As a striker, if he didn’t close it down he’s damned and if he does he’s damned, he was in a 50/50 scenario and he lost out, no player could ever predict where Coquelin’s foot will end up except Coquelin! As harsh as I believe the red was I think an appeal would prove futile as the F. A. All cover each have others backs and don’t use common sense in the review panel.

  • 59 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:42 PM

It did appear at times that Mitro both in MU and Arsenal games had to do all the work alone in their half, I would fully expect after time with coaching well step up a bit further to give him less of an area to cover making him delay in the box when the chance arises

  • 60 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:44 PM

    Are you for real?

If a challenge like that had gone in on one of our players you would have been baying for blood. The lad has set his stall out and deserved a straight red and trying to deflect it as a bad refereeing call is stupid to say the least. This is not a conspiracy but the cold hard truth, the lad was an absolute idiot to do what he did and deserved to be sent off and there is no way that anyone can argue with it

  • 63 JP...from The Rock // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:47 PM

Yup you said it Ed and after seeing Thierry Henry’s advert on the Premier League hailing this as ‘The best league in the World’ I had to have a chuckle. We are the best league in the world with some of the worst referees in the world.

The Premier League definitely needs an upgrade on the quality of referees and some foreign refs would do the world of good too.

I always wonder which team an english ref is more favourable to. They are at the end of the day fans of the game too and must like a team more than another whether they want to admit it or not.

  • 64 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:47 PM

Its not about where the clubs are, they would love 5 ish teams to be all in for religation right upto the last game, the same as they would love 4 teams in for winning the league right upto the last game.
Todays game was about both end of the league.

As for the Mitro sending off, they both jumped.Mitro caught his leg on the way down, exactly how should he have landed while watching the ball?
Are we to stop any kind of jumping for the ball?

  • 68 croftus5678 // Aug 29, 2015 at 9:53 PM

    @58 krul

i watched the game on nbcsn and they had contact with the fa after the event in which they backed the ref in showing the red card.

like you say its a bit pointless as they will stick together and with pundits at 30-70% there is obv enough to warrent the red card to stay from the fa’s point of view.

they also said it should have been a penalty ! think they trying to lower expectations also.

after all the red cards today though i dont think its just against us and more a case of ref’s getting as much money off the clubs as possible.

lets face it our players stayed up but arsenals went over very very easily which contributed to the cards if we had done the same i’m almost convinced arsenal would have seen more cards also !

glad we are not like that just a shame lots of other teams are.

Its a simple way to stop the Arsenals of the league.

I watched it on BT and Howard Webb was in the review truck and he agreed it was the panel were adamant it was but I still can’t see how any ref that loves the game would give a red for that, anyhoo the appeal as I said wouldn’t be successful, but I also don’t see it as being an increase in ban because an appeal would be deemed justified

  • 74 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:01 PM

What got me – last year we were easily pushed muscled of the ball. Yet when I think it was Wijnaldum muscled one of the Arsenal players off the ball he was booked.
and what did Colo get booked for and for that matter Thauvin??

  • 75 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:02 PM

You couldn’t do that though toon 22 because players take knock in many ways even without contact

    Interesting point though

  • 76 JackButler // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:03 PM

Anyone unsure or simply blind to what Mitrovic did today as yourself this

If that had happened to one of our players what would you have wanted the ref to do???

Make excuses all you want, it was a red card

  • 77 Ian Toon // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:03 PM

Macca needs to sort out the indiscipline in the squad. He clearly had the team fired up but that’s our 8th red card in 2015. It’s good to see passion and determination in our play but we can’t carry on like this because we will simply be targetted by referees. Mitrovic has the required physicality to become just what we need in the premiership but he needs to calm down and stop seriously handicapping us.
We do need to start games with a quicker passing tempo and less static play. Our opening programme of games always appeared difficult but after the international break games against West Ham and Watford represent games where we should be picking up points.

Tbf Tow Van’s was a wee sneaky late one from behind I think lol

  • 79 Bri // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:06 PM

Mitro deliberately stamped on the Arsenal players foot,no question. Agree JB

  • 80 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:07 PM

I think the point was made earlier that our lot don’t do the playacting thing which I for one being a British football fan all my 35 years am glad to see in my team

  • 83 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:11 PM

That was Wiji I think, he lost it when Carzola went in on him and looked like the ref was for doing eff all until challenged but that challenging the ref got him booked too

  • 84 Jib // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:15 PM

Having thought about it – the arseholes who watch footy if this blog is representative probably deserve the match officials they get .

  • 85 JackButler // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:15 PM

He did what he did and got sent off for it, no excuses, no defending the lad, he’s big enoug to put himself about and his action today was not what we want or need in this team, there’s a difference in fighting for the result to fighting to prove a personal point and that’s what Mitrovic seems to be doing.

If he wants to be a tough guy, that’s fine, I have no issue with that but just as Jaanmat did at Swansea, he allowed himself to be drawn into something that ultimately cost the entire team and club.

Sheer stupidly has cost us twice in three games now and SM has to stamp it out, pardon the pun

  • 86 Jib // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:20 PM

A red card will be shown to a player who has committed a serious offence such as violent conduct or an illegal and purposeful obstruction of a goal scoring opportunity for the opposing team.

Violent conduct —— I think not

  • 87 JackButler // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:20 PM

I stand corrected and bow to the superior knowledge that you carry, knowledge that towers over former pro’s and officials of the game, knowledge that you now try to carry as a tool to berate fans who see things for what they are rather than what they what they want them to be.

Or is it some deep rooted conspiracy?

Or maybe the black and white goggles have slipped down over you eyes?

  • 89 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:21 PM

We had the most reds in the league last season I believe.

That’s something else that can be coached but will take time, I know Mitro wasn’t here last year but as I said imo if he didn’t go for it he gets pelters and when he does he’s getting pelters I honestly believe he lost a 50/50 and their was slight collateral damage catching Coq it’s fine margins and it was an innocuous challenge for me

  • 90 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:22 PM

Mitrovic challenge was worthy of a second yellow, not a straight red. Especially so early on. It took all the competition & entertainment out of the game. Referee replaced common sense with favouritism for the bigger team.

  • 91 welshgeordie9 // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:25 PM

Good effort from the lads today i was hoping for a early birthday present, have to wait until tomorrow now, hopefully swans will give me 3 points as a present.

  • 93 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:27 PM

Cheers for kinda clearing up the Tow van’s and Colo’s cards. But ain’t it a pity refs are not more consistent and book every player that talks back.
Had no problem with the sending off sometimes they are given other times they are not but Mitrovic needs to calm down – and needs a better first touch/control as he is going to get more bookings/sending off’s trying to retrieve the ball.

  • 94 welshgeordie9 // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:29 PM

As for mitrovic red card, yeah right, I’ve seen more dangerous tackles than that over the years and they have got away with it, not even yellow cards given never mind red, if you can call that a bad tackle, which player took haidara out a few years ago.

  • 95 Krul To Be Kind // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:30 PM

I’m really excited about the grit in the team and I’m pleased we look more determined, haven’t been too pleased with sissoko recently, thought he showed lack of fight but he impressed me today, I was also very underwhelmed with Tow Van but he has really excited me he seems like he can change a game on his own

  • 96 toon22 // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:31 PM

It hasnt just been this game where the ref/lines man has been shocking though, has it.
In the last 4 games for all teams, how many bad calls and favouritism have we seen.
And how many good games with fair and ballanced officials have been present?

  • 97 WWSBRD // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:34 PM

U do have a issue with people disagreeing with ur opinion don’t you

  • 98 overtheline // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:35 PM

    Krul tbK

It was certainly 50/50 and Mitro made contact with the ball. Whether the follow through that caught Coq was a deliberate stamp or clumsy or simply momentum is unclear from the video I have seen. It does not look like a stamp to me. Could Mitro have avoided the contact after the ball had gone ? – again not obvious.

  • 100 toon22 // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:36 PM

Exactly how did that linesman miss the blatant offside for that Liverpool goal?
They have had players who have mad challenges someone in WWE would have been proud. Not a glimer from the ref.
We have a player who jumped for the ball and was sent off.

  • 104 JamesToon // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:40 PM

    R.e Mitro

Imo I think it was a red. But the thing that irritates me is that there’s no consistency in refs these days. I’ve seen worse challenges than that and haven’t seen red.

Love how the players are starting to get stuck in more, concerning the amount of cards we’re picking up, but you have to say some of the Arsenal players were going down like they’d been shot. Sanchez should of had a yellow for that challenge in the first half compared to our yellow cards

  • 105 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:41 PM

If yous watch the mitrovic sending off again, u will see wijnaldum is the closest player to him, & Mitrovic foot goin in the direction of passing the ball to him. Coincidence?? Intent?? I don’t think so!!!

  • 106 JamesToon // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:41 PM

Why is Pardew so Jammy then suddenly acts like he’s God in his interviews

  • 107 jane // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:41 PM

you wouldn’t think Mitrovic would be making a downward stamping type of movement if he was going for the ball, I think you would expect more of a kicking type of movement so whether there was any intent he has definitely given the ref the opportunity. maybe it is his natural instinct to go in like that because perhaps he does have a nasty streak which he needs to learn to curb. Arsenal should have had a pen so at the end of the day no complaints but seems to be positives as well. still early days.

Welsh, padded is simply a far better manager than fans on this forum wud ever give him credit for.many morons on here expected him to relegate palace last season.but he saved them. Many guys on this blog just lack the ability to admit they were wrong to be so vicious in their assessment.

  • 114 Shadow_Shearer // Aug 29, 2015 at 10:52 PM

Yes it should have been a penalty to arsenal, but the red card affected the game alot more than a pen. At least 1 goal down to a pen with 11 men we can still play for a 2 – 1 win. Anybody who doubts this, look what happened when we were down 4 – 0 to arsenal a few seasons back with 11 men. Even John carver got a decent second half out of the team last season against arsenal.

I don’t know about that to be honest, haven’t got anything against that but what would happen if for argument sake mourinho was in charge of England and England play Portugal in a World Cup qualifier or even in the final who would mourinho want to win.

To be honest mate I’ve always been if the mind that you should employ the best man for the job rather than only looking at a native of that country, I know Sven may have caused a few issues for England but he was just about the best of who was available at that point in time

We are lucky though that we have Cookie in charge of the Welsh 🙂

  • 128 WWSBRD // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:09 PM

Pardew is an average manager who found a pot of gold with Ashley

I didn’t slate him when he was here (too much anyway, I accepted what he was) but he is lucky with how Palace are doing and it will come to end

  • 129 welshgeordie9 // Aug 29, 2015 at 11:10 PM

He’s doing a good job so far, although when he took over i thought we would be terrible, not doing to bad in the rankings in fact we have made a big jump.

  • 134 The overrated Frenchman // Aug 30, 2015 at 2:54 AM

I don’t think there’s a conspiracy as such, but referees have always been loathe to make hard decisions against high profile clubs and managers. Too much bad publicity likely to come their way. As for the team, I agree that it’s showing more resolve, but I also agree that if we spend too much time in the bottom three the shoulders may slump and the heads drop. I also agree that almost every club has strengthened their squad so our spending may not be quite as significant in the scheme of things as it looks, especially coming off the low base we had. I haven’t seen enough improvement yet to suggest we are real contenders for a nailed-on top half finish. Three league games on the trot without a goal (under any circumstances) argues we still have problems in that regard which have been underplayed because we have been better defensively.
