30 year-old Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda has a year left on his contract at the French club, and the captain gave the French side a boost when he turned down a possible move to Besiktas on the last day of the transfer window last week.
The French International has been talking in the French Press, and says he regrets his friend Florian Thauvin having left the club for Newcastle last month.
Florian Thauvin – happy at Newcastle
Marseille lost a number of their best players this summer, and have made a poor start to the season getting only 3 points in their first four games with those points coming in a 6-0 win against newly promoted Troyes.
This is what Mandanda has said of Thauvin:
“I regret it because he is above all a friend. It became difficult for him in Marseille, but I have the phone.”
“But he is very happy at Newcastle which is most important.”
We thought the move for Thauvin was a risky one, but he seems to have settled in quickly and immediately after he signed he came on at Manchester United as a sub.
And Florian looked good and almost had a fairy tale start to his Newcastle career, when he was inches away from scoring the winner in stoppage time – in what was a terrific performance from Newcastle.
If we could have won that game that would have given everybody associated with Newcastle a terrific boost, but the that display and the point were very good.
The more we see of Thauvin the more we understand why Steve McClaren wanted him, because the 22 year-old can cross a ball very accurately, and he will be taking all the set plays for us.
Thauvin has one goal and three assists in just three appearances for Newcastle, so if we can keep those kind of stats up over the season, he’s going to be very successful and Newcastle are going to have a very good season.
Newcastle seem to have a very decent squad, but we have to start winning games, after being second bottom of the league with only Sunderland below us.
And Thauvin has been linked with a Barcelona move in January.
But hey, after all those transfer stories over the summer – we have to remember that most of them are just paper talk and just take them with a pinch of salt and not too seriously – I didn’t even have the heart to report on that one.
There’s no way Thauvin will be leaving Newcastle in January – for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Sunderland, Bradford City, Gateshead or anybody else.
