Newcastle’s French International Moussa Sissoko gave a long interview to France Football yesterday, while he’s on International duty with France, and there have been many different reports on what he said in that interview, and depending on what you were looking for – you could find it.
Moussa Sissoko in training at Newcastle
There were bits in it for Newcastle supporters which sounded very positive towards Newcastle:
“I am at Newcastle, and I have the chance to play every weekend, to evolve in a fantastic stadium.”
“Now, in my opinion, it was a very good recruitment for Newcastle this summer.” “There is a great team this year to have a good Premier League season.”
There were bits in it when he said again he wanted to join a Champions League club:
“I am in Newcastle, but it is not a club of the big four in England.” “What I miss is to play in the leading roles (eg Champions League).”
“It could have been a good time to leave this summer.” “There have been discussions with the club, who said they were against a departure. Yes, there were offers from other clubs, but Newcastle vetoed.”
And there was even a bit when he described Crystal Palace as a big club, and bigger than Newcastle United:
“Now, look at those who play my position: there Blaise Matuidi who did extraordinary things to PSG, Paul Pogba which is wonderful to Juventus.”
“Yohan Cabaye who has just signed for Crystal Palace.” “Morgan Schneiderlin who is now at Manchester United. Compared to me, they all play at big clubs.”
And right at the end of the interview, he was asked about all the big transfers and how much does he think he would be worth in today’s transfer market:
“If I were President of a club, why not €100M (and then he laughed).”
There are a couple of things that come out of the interview for Newcastle:
- One is Steve McClaren needs to have a quiet word to Moussa about Crystal Palace.
- The second thing is that Mike Ashley might want to raise his transfer price on Moussa from the £23M he’s valued at right now to ….. whatever. €100M is around £70M.
But if Moussa has a very good season and Newcastle do well before next May, Moussa would probably be happy enough to stay at Newcastle, and continue to be one of our star players.
Tonight France play Serbia in Belgrade, so Moussa will come up against his team-mate Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Wonder if the Serbian will pick up another yellow card?
What do you think?
