Newcastle Striker Could Be Given Huge Opportunity

3:02 pm, Thursday, September 10th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 42 Comments

We’ve watched Paul Simpson’s nufcTV interview now a couple of times, and he talks about a whole range of subjects and the assistant coach is certainly very willing to talk about the coaching staff are doing, and what’s going on with the players.

One of the things we’ve been just a little worried about is whether Ayoze Perez will get enough first team games this season, given we brought in Aleksandar Mitrovic and we still have Papiss Cisse.

Ayoze Perez – in action against Arsenal

But with Mitrovic out for the next three games, there seems to be a chance that Ayoze Perez could be the one to replace the Serbian in the absence of the Serbian International.

“We have got options because of the players we have available it’s given us a lot of food for thought.” “I thought the performance of Ayoze Perez in the game against Northampton gave us a massive lift, to see him play as that lone striker was excellent.”

“We have got Papiss Cisse who has,  you know, done that job early in the season and he is more than capable of doing it again.”  “Florian Thauvin,  who had to go and play that half striker role against Arsenal did it very well.”

“So we have got lots of options, we’ve got them across the midfield and in the wide areas as well.”  “We have a couple of extra options in the forward areas as well.”

“So it is certainly giving Steve McClaren a few headaches as to what team to pick.”

Paul also talked about maybe changing the system a bit to use more of our players and so far this season we have played in the familiar 4-2-3-1 system.

But maybe – at least at home – we could play in a 4-4-2 formation so we have two strikers in the middle up front, which could give us more of a threat.

Certainly if we continue to be short of goals,  that will be something Steve, Paul and the rest of the coaching staff will need to sort out.

But there are some hints there from Paul Simpson,  that maybe Ayoze Perez could start on Monday night at Upton Park, and when he’s played for the first team so far this season, the Spanish U20 International has looked very good.

Ayoze is one of the top prospects at the club today, and already a firm favorite with the Newcastle fans.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Not sure Thauvin played the half striker role, he was basically stuck in our own third defending along with everyone else.
West Ham seem to be hot or cold at the moment, if they are on form we’ll likely be beaten so here’s hoping they are on a cold day

Would like to see us go with 4-4-2 against west ham, overload the flanks.

Good to see Penfold/the Club attempting to mend fences with the Council. Hopefully it is genuine.
Better than when Owl Heed stormed into Nick Forbes office shouting “Who the f*****g hell do you think you are?

@beermonkey – can’t remember who it was by! It was a twitter link but it referenced a lot of Ashleys dealings in the city with other businesses. Basically the premise was if he can’t do things his way he usually sells on and they expected him to do this with the toon.

Once of my clients is a box holder at stoke, he loves bringing up Ashley to me as he’s met him a few times in other business and quite likes him! 1 thing he always says though is he can’t believe Ashley would try and implement the tendencies and policies he has at Newcastle because certains clubs fans would never stand for it. He labelled Newcastle and Liverpool as clubs where football is more than just football and that if Ashley wanted a club to run like sports direct he would have been better off buying a club like Wigan where the club means less to the community

  • 7 beermonkey // Sep 10, 2015 at 4:03 PM

he might sell up, I am not sure although pardew did say a while back he was committed till 2016
I bet that’s when all the stuff that has been outsourced like bars and catering there contracts end so all would come back to the club
so it could be an ideal time for him to sell

  • 8 Jib // Sep 10, 2015 at 4:40 PM

I think Mike Ashley has learnt to keep his nose out because he feels he now has the personnel in place he can trust not to cock things up.
The danger if he sells up is that we get another Billionaire who thinks he knows his stuff and then we are back to square one and all the grief of the last 6+ years would be for nought.

    Lmfao, who is owl heed

  • 10 WWSBRD // Sep 10, 2015 at 4:48 PM

What if we got a billionaire who did know his stuff? Or one willing to employ people who did?

I hope ur right jay and he does go soon NUFC won’t miss him and we can get back to being a football club again

Mr Tuff and me don’t see eye to eye on much.
But we are agreed on 2 things
Obertan will never make a footballer while he has a hole in his arse.
Derek Llambias is a horrible piece of kit.

    @ jib

here man im crying here laughing owl heed, oh and i totally agree with both your points

  • 15 Mister Tuff // Sep 10, 2015 at 5:16 PM

Jib Jibberish – who told you Obertron would never make a PL player.
I formed my own opinion upon this matter several years ago.
Did you consult with Uncle Peanut (the club insider) in order to come to this conclusion.

  • 16 barkel // Sep 10, 2015 at 5:28 PM

why the petty insults Tuff? I know you and Jib don’t get on but that right there is bloody childish and what makes people leave the blog

  • 17 Jib // Sep 10, 2015 at 5:35 PM

Barkel you have restored my faith in human nature 🙂

  • 18 We are the mags // Sep 10, 2015 at 5:37 PM

God i agree man whats with the insults this sounds like a fun place.

  • 19 Mister Tuff // Sep 10, 2015 at 6:21 PM

Barkel – I fail to see how asking someone how they came to a conclusion about something is deemed an insult.
I cannot recall you commenting on certain posts when filthy gutter language is used for no obvious reason.- unless you missed them. Probably more people may leave the blog as a consequence of foul abuse as opposed to my light hearted micky tacking.

Good Evening Gents and Jail for Ashley, everyone happy or are we all moaning about something.

One man’s petty insults is another man’s mickey ta(c)king I guess.
By gum I wish this blog had an ignore button !

Is anyone else a little worried about Monday ?

They could potentially field a front and midfield of Payet , Sakho , Carrol , Lanzini , Antonio and Moses with Kouyate and Noble behind them

That on paper could totally bully our midfield and defence

Very wary of what happened against Swansea

You ain’t very bright are ya ?

  • 29 SUTTY1978 // Sep 10, 2015 at 7:12 PM

Doesnt sound like they are looking at changing system as Ed suggests, Simmo’s ramblings are all about different players playing in the lone striker role.
McClaren needs to grow some balls and play a bit more attacking stylee.
Don’t really understand him, it’s like he’s bottled it because it’s the premier league and a job thats too big for him and he doesn’t want to take a hammering. He was never scared of attacking at Twente or Derby so why the negativity here?
Things need to change starting Monday

  • 30 AncientC // Sep 10, 2015 at 7:16 PM

4 wins in the last 30 Premier League games, perhaps it is time to come up with new idea that does not involve an isolated striker.

  • 31 Jail for Ashley // Sep 10, 2015 at 7:17 PM

I know exactly where it’s from Jeff, one of my favourite authors, the two characters remind me of you and welsh if you had your own comedy show, a spiv like character with a criminal past followed round by his loyal and simple sidekick !

  • 32 Jib // Sep 10, 2015 at 7:18 PM

“He was never scared of attacking at Twente or Derby so why the negativity here?”

I don’t think the negativity is coming from SM .

There is some negativity coming from numpties who slag a coach off before they’ve seen the flipping team sheet , I think it’s you who needs to grow a pair .

  • 33 SUTTY1978 // Sep 10, 2015 at 7:30 PM

JIB, slightly touchy there. We’ve created the least chances in the league. A 10th of the season has already gone in the bin. We have been negative in all the games so far and started poorly. Do you think that nothing needs to change or are you happy with us trudging through matches trying not to take a beating. I’m honestly interested in your thoughts as you seem to be on the blind defensive without giving another side to the discussion.

  • 34 Jib // Sep 10, 2015 at 7:37 PM

Anyone who can’t see progress from the Swansea match is blind.
There is a whole spectrum of differing approaches and team set ups between the mind numbing timidity which was on show for a lot of last season and an all guns blazing gung ho cavalry charge .
Some of these players only met 4 weeks ago ffs . Everyone needs to calm the f@ck down and cut the club some slack . To repeat it’s a work in progress

  • 35 WINSTON // Sep 10, 2015 at 7:39 PM

hi all, i’m new to this.

This is my team for the weekend

    Thauvin———–De Jong———–Wjnaldum

What does everyone think??? I think that’s our strongest
    attacking lineup (without mitrovic)

  • 36 Jib // Sep 10, 2015 at 7:42 PM

    Sutty even

  • 37 Jib // Sep 10, 2015 at 8:05 PM

    What is your bench ?
When will you make your subs ?

  • 38 SUTTY1978 // Sep 10, 2015 at 8:11 PM

JIB, so where do you think we are on that spectrum? Most of the teams we are playing against have a host of new players, West Ham will have whole load on show, we will have a maximum of three.
In the mind numbing timidity of last season we showed more attacking intent than we have done this season. All I have seen since the Swansea game is backs to the wall defending.

  • 39 firebug666 // Sep 10, 2015 at 8:11 PM

So far we have played four games, two of those we played with 10 men, two we managed to draw, two we were camped in our own 18 yard box for most of the 90 minutes, none have we looked like winning yet.

I’m all for giving the head coach time, but I would like to see us trying to win games, rather than defend our 18 yard box and try to make Coloccini look half decent.

This 4-2-3-1 formation has just not worked at all for us, our striker (whoever that is) get isolated so become neither use nor ornament, we cannot get out of our own half and so resort to hoofing the ball to an isolated striker who has a CB on each shoulder.

I think it is now time to be adventurous, and change the formation to a more attacking one. We need to force the opposition to defend their goal more, rather than taking pot shots at ours.

A 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 would see us pressing the opposition more and take some of the strain from our defence, that still seems to be lacking, and in need of strong commanding CB.

If we play 4-2-3-1 on Monday night I think we will lose, maybe 2-0.

  • 40 geordielad880 // Sep 10, 2015 at 8:16 PM

winston same line up as i would pick near enough, but would probably have wijnaldum and thauvin on opposite flanks, i couldnt quite decide between anita and colback, but colback offers better protection to back four, especially haidara at left back, something we need with sissoko in a deeper role

  • 41 geordielad880 // Sep 10, 2015 at 8:19 PM

bench of darlow, s.taylor, anita, aarons, cisse, tiote and obertan. Aarons for thauvin after 60-70 mins, cisse for de jong after 60 mins, with perez dropping behind cisse, and obertan for sissoko, with wijnaldum switching inside

  • 42 WINSTON // Sep 10, 2015 at 8:23 PM

    The bench would be

Darlow, S. Taylor, Cisse, Anita, tiote, obertan, gouffran

Subs depends completely on the game situation.

but as a guide I woul look to give cisse 15/20 mins

    obertan 10 mins

    anita 10/20 mins
