Papiss Cisse In For Mitrovic The Only Change

7:02 pm, Monday, September 14th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 476 Comments

west-ham-united-crestnufc emblem

Steve McClaren has just announced the Newcastle team for the important game at West Ham United tonight.

Newcastle: Krul, Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini (c), Haidara, Colback, Anita, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Thauvin, Cisse
Subs: Darlow, Lascelles, Gouffran, Obertan, Aarons, de Jong, Perez

As expected Papiss Cisse for Aleksandar Mitrovic is the only change to the side that did so well last time out against Arsenal, when we played with 10 men for 74 minutes of that game.

And Yoan Gouffran makes the bench tonight with Jamaal Lascelles also in for Steven Taylor as a sub.

Seems like McClaren is trying to give different players some time on the bench.

Former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll is on the bench for West Ham.

This is what Steve McClaren has said about tonight’s opponents West Ham:

“There’s a lot of frustration out there with teams not reaching the level they want but hopefully after the break, I think we’ll start to see a greater amount of consistency,”

“Looking around the league, you see a lot of teams struggling to find consistency and West Ham are certainly one of them.”

“It’s difficult to judge West Ham, especially at this stage of the season, as you just don’t know what side will turn up. They’ve had two great away performances but they’ve been disappointing at home so, much like us, they’ll go into the game looking to prove a point,”

“The international break has given us the chance to go away and reflect on our start to the season and now we’re back, we can really start to push on.”

“This is where the season properly starts, now with the transfer window out of the way we can really get down to business and show what we’re all about.”

There’s a decent amount of confidence from Newcastle fans – 80% think we can take something out of this game.

The will be Newcastle’s last visit to Upton Park – let’s hope we can come away with a win.

Update – Newcastle arrived at Upton Park at 7:10 pm tonight but they were 40 minutes late due to London traffic – we must make a strong start to the is game and cannot be caught asleep.

    GTwo –

I think Steve gets the full season unless we are in the bottom 3 in March. He signed on being told he would oversee a project and he’s certainly told them the he’s on for the project but that you can’t judge a project that hasn’t had time to settle. If we’re relegation fodder in March I think Mike panics as the potential money loss is too great and goes after someone…the problem is who is available then? Not anyone worth grabbing, generally. Hopefully we never end up in that unfortunate scenario.

I think we’ll be 10th in March and coasting along without much excitement but without any scares.

Predictable line up so much for trying to find a winning team, colback Anita don’t work in the same team, one needs dropped and I’m not arsed who either offer much to the team

  • 5 SUTTY1978 // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:08 PM

Hmmm, underwhelmed. I would have though McClaren would have seen the midfield problems that most of us have. This will be another game where we will struggle to score

Toon team bus currently stuck in traffic, makes a change from McClaren parking it!

  • 6 Bambams // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:09 PM

Would of liked to see Perez with SDJ just behind him.

Not sure Cisse will be mobile enough. He can score if we get the chances to him.

Think today’s game hinges on how well Thauvin plays.

    Cmon Toon

team itself is a good choice 11, very much the same one as my choice would be.

going off the fact west ham have lost the first two games of season we might be expecting this to be a very asy game for the first win but those two losses might make it become a more difficult game to get the win, a point will be ok and yeh it might mean we are still sitting in the bottom 3 but at this minute in time that league table tells nothing leister 2nd, chelsea 17th.

  • 21 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:19 PM

A predictable team from McClaren. One I’m sure Bolivia would have been expecting and preparing his side for.

As I said earlier, I expect Bilic will have been showing his players the Swansea match and will have them working to use the pace on the flanks to get behind us and cause us problems like Montero and Ayew did.

Not filled with confidence, but will be watching and hoping the same line old line up can offer more going forward then so far this season.

so far this season we’ve got only 1 point less that we expected.

southampton should have been 3 of course but it is our bogey team to some

swansea maybe 1 point but a stupid bit of play that is the fault of a player himself cost us 10 men A is certainly going to turn defensive

manure- we should be getting 0 points

arsenal 1 point at best but most days 0 and when a clown gets himself sent off again we’ll be sure to just hit and hope for that chance of a point at best.

therefore we’ve only 1 point less than expected.

  • 28 BandB // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:23 PM

    Lil,

I fear they will play directly and with pace, as Swansea and Southampton did.
It will be a very different test for our shield wall than that offered by Man Utd and Arsenal, who kept it on the ground and probed.

This is just like still having Pardew here. Manager has his favourites and keeps the same team lose or draw. I would say win, lose or draw but i wouldn’t know!
Must be so easy for opposition managers to line up against us.

  • 37 AncientC // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:30 PM

They didn’t even bother to name a formation, is that because McClaren is so predictable that everybody can assume it’s a 4-2-3-1.

I was led to assume that the club had ended its poor communication with the fans? I also thought that formations not being disclosed would have started and ended with Carver.

Why name every formation this season, to stop now? Absolutely pathetic.

Toonking, it’s the negative set up thats leaving me feeling, well, negative. We seem to be going all out for a draw regardless of the opposition. McClaren spoke yesterday of balancing defence with attack and then changes precisely nothing. He keeps claiming he’s looking to learn from games which makes him sound like he’s on work experience, but he doesn’t seem to have learnt anything yet. The 4231 system has never worked at Newcastle and I don’t think it ever will.
Wonder how many times in the commentry we will hear “cisse looks isolated”

  • 48 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:35 PM

    BandB,
I expect the same. Bilic has the right kind of players to try and mimic Swansea’s style against us, and has the pace of Antonio on the bench for later on as well.

Hopefully the same players can offer far more then they have so far.

  • 56 colwell // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:40 PM

  • 58 BandB // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:42 PM

    Lil,

I really fear that if we are peeled like a banana once or twice, any sense of “they shall not pass” that has been engendered in the squad will fall apart, and so will the sense that at at we are getting the defence right.
I too really hope they have something they haven’t shown us so far, and it isn’t “back to the drawing board” by 10pm.

  • 62 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:47 PM

    BandB,
If West Ham open us up and get a goal early on it will be interesting to see how we react. Will we show more attacking intent? Will that expose our defence? Will McClaren be able to inspire a change of tempo or a lift in the performance?

Will the traffic be used as an excuse later? Or will McClaren have “put down a marker” as he says in his pre match interview…

  • 63 toon kk // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:49 PM

The biggest problem is we haven’t enough pace and struggle with possession not to mention we struggle to get a shot on target.

  • 65 JamesToon // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:53 PM

We can’t have a slow start, we’ve seen from the first 4 games West Ham are weak when teams overload the wings. which is what we need to do tonight from the first minute and pin Moses and lanzini back, force them to cover Cresswell and Tomkins more

  • 66 toonking // Sep 14, 2015 at 7:55 PM

    sutty

This boring team we see playing each and every week is not really down to 4-2-3-1 it’s issue comes from a team containing very little pace, such a poor amount of creativity from the width and a defence which is leaking goals very badly.

This season is the very first year to hopefully turn things around but it doesn’t happen overnight. leister city might be a team you’d say prove me wrong but they’ve got the great team spirit that has been totally drained out of newcastle from so many years of chaos. This could be the year we finally are going to regain that spirit that has been missing and will get the players working like a team instead of just aiming to improve themselves and gain that transfer away. Hopfully next year can see another decent transfer window happen and we’ll gain more of the players we need to continue walking our way up.

i’ve been saying that for years myself, these players we keep on bring in are coming away from a slow paced league into the fasted one of them all., containing the ball in most of those leagues abroad is much easier due in part to it’s less phsical style, leagues like this one are very phsical so player can run further with the ball at a slower pace but here power is still done so it’s easy to get knocked away from the ball therefore players need to get that space quick enough for the pass.

I’m usually very positive but what I’m watching is absolute pants tonight.

Mbemba at fault for the goal, why did he head it into the centre when he was out of position, that should have been launched up field or headed out!

What I’m watching is simply not good enough made worse with over 2 weeks of massive anticipation for this game hoping to see more attacking but the distance between midfield and Cisse is not going to give us goals

We could have Messi and Ronaldo upfront and still look toothless, problem isn’t Cisse it’s the lack of invention. We’ve created nothing in that half. Shearer once said a striker is only as good as his service. Haidara can’t get the ball above 2 inches. Janmaat keeps stepping inside amd the others are anonymous. Can any of you remember a chance we created other than Janmaat miss?

Strikers need service, whether that be Perez or cisse

  • 205 Lilongwe Geordie // Sep 14, 2015 at 8:54 PM

Poor from start to finish. Anita, Gini, Janmaat and Mbemba could all be looked at for the goal. Poor from each of them. Anita chased the ball, Gini with a weak challenge and let his man run off him, Janmaat and Mbemba both made poor clearances.

At the end of the day we have offered nothing going forward though and can’t really grumble so far if we get nothing out of it.

Does McClaren have the stones to go for it? Soon find out, but one thing is certain he has to reevaluate his plans for the season because this is very much the same dross of the last few years.

A lot to prove in the second half.

  • 206 Klam3r // Sep 14, 2015 at 8:54 PM

I would give Cisse away for free. Him and Colback dosn’t work in a setup like this. They are far too limited in the passing/link up department. • 215 Llort muw // Sep 14, 2015 at 8:57 PM

Ok, upon watching this extremely boring match I have come to the conclusion that were just not that good. I guess it’s time that we accept that.

Having said that it does seem like there is much room for improvement as long as we utilise a different formation.

Something like this for the second half would give us much more purpose in attack.

    ——————–Krul
    Janmaat-Mbemba-Colo-Haidara
    ———–Wijnaldum-Anita
    —————–De Jong
    Thauvin——-Perez——–Aarons

Take off: Cisse, Sissoko and Colback.
Bring on: Perez, Aarons and De Jong.

I can’t help but feel like Wijnaldum would be much more useful deeper, where he can get on the ball more and create. At the moment he is not getting found by any of our midfielders. Perez and Aarons will offer pace and creativity which we are lacking with Sissoko and Cisse. De Jong to find those defence splitting passes.

We are effectively playing a man down with Cisse. The days of the poacher in Premier League football have gone. Unless you have $500m worth of midfield giving you supply – every player must be involved in build up play.

We are attacking almost exclusively down the right and Janmaat’s final ball has been atrocious.

Sub Colback off (on a yellow card for a stupid free kick) De Jong and Cisse for Perez.

442 only way to go now. We cannot play what we are playing Midfield is too weak not creating anything from there and too weak.

Season is going to be relegation. We passed away 50 million in the wrong players and nothing has changed. So typical.

Poor scouting. No pace in a poor squad.

  • 230 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 14, 2015 at 9:02 PM

One of Wiji’s best assets is his ability to find space coming from deep, with SDJ in front of him who is also intelligent off the ball and likes to go beyond the ST it’ll make even more space for Wiji in behind, whilst giving us somebody that knows how to occupy defenders in the box. Add to that the lively, tenacious, tricky Perez and we might have a plan.

  • 232 danuneek // Sep 14, 2015 at 9:02 PM

I think half the problem is the system. With Anita coming back to collect the ball and pushing the centre backs out wide, our full backs are essentially playing as wingers. It sort of makes Sissoko and Thauvin redundant, unless they cut inside… but Thauvin is left footed playing on the left so that’s not going to happen. Sissoko can’t cross a ball either. Colback and Anita in the middle is too defensive, we need to bring Gini back alongside Anita and replace Colback with either De Jong or Perez to play the number 10.

  • 236 Slank // Sep 14, 2015 at 9:03 PM

West Ham are retreating whenever we get the ball and this restricts our counterattack using the pace of Sissoko and Thauvin.

I would replace Cisse with Perez as he is very tricky with close ball control.

I would replace Thauvin with Aarons who also has close ball control.

I would replace Sissoko with De Jong and play him behind Perez.

First real obvious black mark against McClaren for me, not changing it at half-time, particularly Colback, is a real lack of initiative and/or blindness to the flaws of the first-half.

I just find it odd that a new gaffer would come in and play Pardew’s favourite formation – a formation that we always struggled with.

Pardew went on his pot-luck runs from tweaking the formation here and there, but one of his brutal mistakes was always returning to the 4-2-3-1.

McClaren possibly would have been wise to have learned from the past manager’s mistakes.

nezza 4-3-1-2 is just too compact to really be played for ourselves, what will usually happen it he who is playing behind the strikers will be going out wide and assisting the full backs to ensure we’ve still got a CM up to cover incase the FB doesn’t manage to get back and the opposition breaks on the counter, these compact formations all need a great amount of speed in the midfield so that a player can find the space on the width whilst most players are closing down those attacking through the centre Newcastle are far too slow and can’t find the space in time before the opposition get the chance to counter attack.

we’ve had great possession today but due to so little movement it was constantly getting wasted.

It seems like our full backs are only interested in getting forward. We are ending off with Colo out at LB and Mbemba at RB and Anita was trying to get back everytime.

The shape is awful. We don’t have players in the middle who are good enough on the ball to stand still and look forward. As soon as someone is in their face they have to turn back towards Krul. C

Certainly doesn’t help that we have no movement, nobody pulling defenders or making feint runs and giving them something to think about. Just the same predictable football we are used to.

I uses we need more time? lol

  • 335 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 14, 2015 at 9:31 PM

Aye and pass on Ayew because he wants £5m signing on fee and £80k pw, but sign Thauvin for £13m on £45k pw + a small signing fee no doubt.

Take 5+ years before Ayew’s cost surpasses Thauvin’s if those figures are near.

    Colback is not good enough.

As for all you legendary scouts how many of you gave yourselves a pat on the back when Wolfswinkel went to Norwich for “buttons” remind me what he has done?

    What about Sakho at Liverpool?

I mean the list goes on how many crap players you lot have picked out.

You all judge players like you pick out the Bales. How many of you truthfully said Payet should come this summer?

I cannot remember one person. And half of you live in dreamland when it comes to who we should sign! Why not dream about Payet?

The team is unbalanced. I said before the game i hope the 2 weeks has given SM to rethink a formula. Things we need to address and improve on:
    – Ball retention needs to be more composed more intelligent and actually pass with a purpose
    – Formation needs to change. 4231 way too unbalanced.
    – Final third, needs more bite, and as I said more intelligence. Decision making is awful at the moment. So many times when Thauvin/Haidara had space to exploit but chose to make a pass/shoot

  • 347 toonking // Sep 14, 2015 at 9:36 PM

surely even you can’t deny that our team does lack the pace, we’ve had lots of possession during this game but it’s constantly remained at the back, players are not getting into the space.

That first game of the season wasn’t a win but it was certainly a more action packed game than those we’ve seen since, obatan might not create very many good chances but when playing you can see just how slow the majority of the rest are.

  • 348 Hail Wor Ashley // Sep 14, 2015 at 9:36 PM

Unlike some I won’t be turning on the manager or coming out with utter b*llocks about relegation but you have to say that was absolute crap!!!! Sorry Steve but your selection has to be criticized, as the inclusion of both Colback and Anita in the same team just left us completely flat. It was only when Perez, who surely should have started, came on did we look, even a little bit positive. SDJ, and Perez must start against Watford? I’m back for the Chelsea game, by which time I’m hoping that we’ve beaten both Watford and Sheffield Wed?

  • 448 colwell // Sep 14, 2015 at 9:58 PM

Has anyone ever seen De Jong run? I’ve only seen him walk/stop/watch and repeat

  • 449 Rotonda heights // Sep 14, 2015 at 9:58 PM

I didn’t think it could get much worse than pardew and carver. I was wrong!!! Perez apart, what a collective pile of what the west ham fans called us.

At one point perez had to run almost back to the half way line because there was zero movement around and ahead of him. Absolutely pathetic.

That display tonight dear friends is relegation form.
We are going to need a 50 million spend in January – but it may be too late.

if you combined colback and sissoko you would a half decent conference player

  • 455 BandB // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:02 PM

Just wait until the season starts!

how stupid was it not to buy a striker!!
i know we baught miti but that was a huge gamble in itself with him being young and unproven
january already looks like the most important time of this season

  • 458 nufcursed // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:02 PM

de jong is not fast but at least he has the ideas. we need more creative-thinking players!
players like sissoko are energetic powerhouses that just run blindly into the wall!
sissoko should’ve been sold while someone wanted to pay 15M for him!
he’s not worth half of that

  • 459 Bri // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:03 PM

Exactly the same crap as last season, lacking creativity,no goal threat, slow moving forward.
We are so boring to watch. Prepare for a relegation fight because this team has relegation written all over it.

  • 461 firebug666 // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:04 PM

So this is the squad that McClaren is targeting a top eight finish with, and a cup run.

IMO This squad couldn’t finish top eight in the Championship.

Totally void of any ideas in the final third, spend most of our time running around in circles, and we still have little if any movement off the ball.

As for the defence, Well McClaren tells us that’s all sorted now, the have been working on that aspect and the players have all done well.

I’m pleased about that as we have only conceded 7 goals in 5 games. No problems here then.

I don’t think we will ever see a performance from the present players, especially playing that damn 4-2-3-1, it just does not work for us at all.

  • 462 stuart no9 // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:05 PM

Maclaren said we were going to see what we are all about tonight ! he was right there .relagation , thats what we are all about . the sooner the better

  • 463 JP...from The Rock // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:05 PM

We desperately need a CAM, LB, ST and a CB ASAP! We’re a joke right now.

  • 464 toonking // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:06 PM

perez, arrons and mbemba all these are looking the best players in our team yet at the same time they are all very young, for once in a transfer window get some premier league quality players that have proper PL XP.

  • 465 Newcastle for alltid // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:07 PM

The majority of our team has a basic lack of understanding of the game of football. Some of our players would deserve better players around them, but all in all, squad-wise, we should be happy if we make the top 10 by the end. It`s as simply as our tactic of not paying clubs what they want in the past that catches up with us. I`m confident we could have a strong team with Ayew, Payet and Gomis by now, if we would just have coughed up the money that was asked.

Btw, which one of our players passed the ball to Coloccini when we were attempting a pacey counter-attack near the end? Cracked me up in disbelief that one.

  • 466 stuart no9 // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:07 PM

as for believing in maclaren !! i cant believe in a manager who has beedn sacked from his last 3 clubs , 2 of the CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS .HAHAHAHAH

  • 467 phoonck // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:08 PM

We had zero off-the-ball movement when in possession. How did we chalk up 61% of possession? Goals win games, not possessions!

    ……………Wijanldum………Colback
    Perez………………..Sissoko…………….Thauvin
    ………………………….Mitrovic

  • 470 DG MAGPIE // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:12 PM

All I expect is a few decent chances in each game, and sweat dripping at the end of the game. Its hardly a big ask.

    Gutless

  • 471 anthc // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:13 PM

Well I hope mclaren intends to win the next 5 games as 2pts from possible 15 is a disgrace tbf.ashley must be thinking he’s 50 mill in and no better off!
I really thought sissoko could be an absolute beast but he was poor tonight. Cisse got no service but to be fair if I was a winger I wouldn’t pass to the useless twat. His touch is awful and his crazy attempts, absolute dross. He’s clearly got the hump being dropped for mitrovic. Colback and anita just aren’t physical enough for me. Hate to agree with some other posters but we are well and truly in the turd. Mclaren talks the talk but is yet to walk the walk.

  • 472 pethmag // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:16 PM

More shit football from the toon . Colback and anita it just don’t work there utter shite . Collo useless as ever . Cisse crap as usual offers nothing at all . Sissoko shite as per norm .
This team has no pace, craft, or guile . Totally predictable and pedestrian pace . Long hard slog of a relegation battle for the toon .

  • 473 The overrated Frenchman // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:17 PM

That was like a replay of one of last season’s games, with a couple of new faces no better than the old ones. Alarm bells were ringing for me when Ashley left Charnley in the job. He has to go, along with Carr, and by the look of it McClaren who appears to be out of his depth in the Premier League as it is now. The club really needs to be re-invented to have any hope of achieving anything.

  • 474 international // Sep 14, 2015 at 10:30 PM

Ok match assessment time, undone by a wonder strike in the first half , and a good counter from again a poor set piece in the second . Both goals scored at the worst possible time took the winds out of our sails. Ok at possession but lacking in ideas trough the middle. Easy to defend against when our attacks are always trough the flanks. Cisse does look uninspired and lacks the finesse to play up top in the system used. West ham did neither impress, but relied more on singular moments and punished us for our mistakes. Still what is the most alarming about the loss are the weak set plays. After last season it is crucial when having “a day off” we can at least depend on set plays for scoring opportunities. Today again it rather bizarre, that a set play our way often is a bigger concern for a counter attack against than a goal scoring opportunity. My hopes of Steve to elevate the current squad trough good coaching is slowly dwindling, as i ask myself: ” was it down to bad coaching or is the player material good enough?”. Well time will see, as the fixures have been extra “Krul” to Mc Larren, but the impression seems to carry on from last season rolled. That this newcastle side can find itself in yet a relegation battle even after spending 50 million punds.

Get real man!!!!! I f******** hate this blog when we lose. Ok, we lost and yes we were shite and yes McClaren probably got his tactics wrong but that doesn’t mean we are suddenly back in the dark days. The club is moving forward with good summer signings however it will take time for Stevie Mc to get the right balance and get to know the players. Give the bloke time FFS!!!
A more attacking formation against Watford, a first win under our belt and watch the mood change on these pages!!
