We will hear a lot more from Fab Coloccini then we have done since he was made captain by Alan Pardew in the summer of 2011, after Kevin Nolan left for West Ham.
And the captain pulls no punches today in an interview in which he says Monday night’s performance just wasn’t good enough, and Newcastle have to cut out the mistakes and start putting some wins up on the board.
Good action shot of Fab Coloccini at Upton Park
This is what Fabricio has said in the Chronicle today:
“We now have three home games and we can’t accept what happened at West Ham.” “We must try to get points and wins in the next few games.”
“We see games against West Ham and Watford as teams in ‘our league’ who we should be taking points from, so it’s disappointing.” “We must try to avoid the same mistakes going forward.”
“For us, we can’t afford to have our heads down so we must look forward and get some points.” “We didn’t do what we’ve been doing in the first four games in the Premier League.”
“I’m frustrated about that.” “We want to try to do the same things as we did in the first four games.”
“We don’t want to go back to what was happening last season and we have to adjust this quickly, and make sure it doesn’t happen again on Saturday against Watford.”
“Last season we made mistakes without the ball and it’s something we need to stop.” “We need to eliminate the mistakes and learn from it.”
Those are good words from the captain.
Certainly the fans are worried after the poor performance against West Ham, and hope we are not going to have a fourth poor season in a row, after we did so well to finish 5th in 2012.
Newcastle have three successive games at home against Watford, Sheffield Wednesday (League Cup third round) and then Chelsea.
We have a chance to win all three – and remember we have beaten Chelsea for the last three seasons in this fixture, and Jose Mourinho has never won at St. James’ Park.
A win is what we need against Watford on Saturday, to get us off to a good start.

Comment #161My point about Colo’s comment is that if we start from a standpoint that we are in “our own league” with Watford, that is very likely where we are likely to end up.

I am a harpy.
I offer my full and unequivocal retraction.
Bobby has harangued anyone. Not once. And I defy anyone to say otherwise.

It seems you’ve taken my advice but deviated too far and are now a knobend instead of just a knob 😉

Comment #164Magscar…If you’re ever interested, I can give a first hand account of BandB’s labelling posters from the off.
Let’s not be silly. Most people, if not all, start to form an opinion / impression of the person they’re speaking with. It’s automatic. It usually impacts how we speak to that person too.
Surely the key part of that is to be able to adapt and change that impression as new information comes about.
Also, I don’t think either BandB or I have claimed he has labelled us today, but I mentioned that he has labelled others. Again, this is something everyone on the blog is guilty of. We discussed this recently, didn’t we?

I know that’s what you like to think – others of course may not as it’s a free world. I wait to see the next poster who gets to enjoy so much banter with you both. May be a wait as I don’t think there are so many fatalist ones.

Comment #167BandB, if I’ve ever given you the impression that I think you’re stupid, I apologise unreservedly – that isn’t the case. Far from it. I do think that after eight years of Ashley, I’ve reached the conclusion he doesn’t care what we think and will always do things his way. He’s made loads of mistakes and to be fair, he did acknowledge that fact – much to my amazement!! The changes as I see them are: his step away from football issues. The forming of the board that includes footballing people – whether they’re the right people is, of course, opinion. A new coaching set up that includes one of the most highly rated young coaches in Cathro. A new philosophy that granted, went walkabout on Monday night, but looks like an improvement on the last few seasons. Spending money on better players than we have recently and the promise of more to come. Taking cups seriously. Emails to fans. These are all what I view as changes for the better. More changes are required, but it is a step in the right direction.

Comment #168Bobbybee, I tend to agree with you on this, as opposed to Band B and Ibiza. I am happier that changes have been made this summer. A new manager and staff, more money spent etc. I also appreciate that it was long overdue. I dont think now is the time to rail about Ashley – that time may come again, and that time was before. Right now, I am more concerned with the types of players Carr wants at the club and concerned that SMC is turning out to be a defensive manager -as people in the know had suggested. I dont want Pardew Mk2, with high stats for possession. I want to see attacking football at NUFC and if SMC cant do it, then he should be sacked at the end of the season. I dont think it will come to that – but guess who will be the overall decider of incoming players, and who will defend SMC if he turns out to be poor – Carr – and thats a fundamental issue i have with how the club is run, and obviously Ashley is behind that. I do think we will get a reaction v watford, and score goals – maybe 3. If we dont get a reaction, i would start to question SMC’s appointment. I know its early, but quite often, accurate judgements are made early. I remain optimistic, if not hugely, that this man and his young coach have it in them to produce a team that threatens the opposition. We have to see this, irrespective of what players he has at his disposal.

Comment #173Bobby…….. I also think that we have made some changes for the better, but if we don’t put in a convincing performance on Saturday then the anger and frustration will kick in big time. There is a lot to do still to make us competetive, and I could feel the disappointment at WestHam on Monday, started by Krul kicking for touch when the pass out to a full back was blocked off. This was a defining game for many people to show us what kind of season we will have.

Comment #176magscar…Is it okay now that Munster is backing up Bobbys point of view? 2 vs 2?
Being serious again…
Munster…I do appreciate we have a new coaching team, new players and more money spent than ever before (even a club record signing). Where the difference comes is what people believe the reasoning behind that is. I think it was essential as without it we’d be going down. Even with it, based on the few games we’ve played so far, we still haven’t done enough, but that view could change over time – I hope it does.
I draw the line at saying Ashley is showing signs of a changed philosophy due to him doing what he really had to do regardless. He’s not a toddler who needs a clap for using the toilet.
As for Carr…nah, we’ve covered that well enough for now.

Yes we all form impressions of people we meet, spot in a pub, see on TV etc but how often does the average person let a person know what they think of another on acquaintance . Presumably only one blessed with the unerring ability to instantly recognise an individual for what they are and the arrogance to say it. I am no such saint.
I slightly recall a discussion re labels but don’t keep notes so can only say I thought we were on about groups rather than personalising matters which is far different imo.

Comment #180Ibiza, feel free to gang up mate, I’ll take on allcomers 🙂 It’s not defeatism, it’s realism. Have you ever attended one of the Ashley out demos? I have, because I like to listen to both sides. As you probably haven’t, allow me. It consisted of no more than three or four hundred people – many not even genuine fans, but sensing a possible kick off they couldn’t resist. A lot of the information being passed around wasn’t even true and it mostly consisted of foul mouthed abuse aimed at Ashley. This one in particular was heavily advertised and even involved a police presence to control the crowd. Crowd? Group maybe. As a protest, it was pathetic. As was the other one I watched. I haven’t heard of one successful one – despite the ones I watched being thus described! That’s why I don’t see it as defeatism and describe it as realism. 3-400 people shouting foul mouthed abuse will change nothing.

Again, there is photographic evidence that the protest at he Spurs game far exceeded the number you chose to put forward.
I am just saying because I was there and also took photographs myself.
Saying a number is smaller doesn’t make it so.
And while they were aiming some foul-mouthed abuse at Ashley, they were getting plenty back from the proper fans.
Anyway, I don’t want to be haranguing you, because as magscar has inferred, you seem a peaceable sort.

Comment #182B abd B , agreed we have been aiming too low, but I hope we are starting to aim at mid table now. Blood running to the head at the thought of it…but i dont see it happening this season. Maybe next, sadly. I do believe the club is improving though. There have been clear changes in the summer. The biggest example was Charva. Most people on here, me included, thought he would be kept on. He wasnt ( thank God )

Comment #183Bobbybee- Without wishing to patronise you I want you to know that I admire your positivity and your outlook on life. As well of course your devotion to and knowledge of the toon. You don’t make me laugh anywhere as much as Belfast but your a great guy- for what it’s worth.
It really does pay to be positive and spread positivity in your life. Not only for your own health and mental state but those you love as well. I was brought up and from being very young to believe that when faced with a setback ” to just get on with it”. You clearly have followed that mantra in your life. A positive mindset makes you feel so much better and allows you to rationalise and when faced with a negative situation you can put it into perspective without too much mental gymnastics.
There are people who are never happier than when they are being miserable but if you are constantly surrounded by negative people they sap the energy from you.
Other people don’t walk in your shoes. They don’t know what makes you tick.

Comment #184BandB…I think Magscar is just commenting on the injustice of it all and doesn’t fall on either side…I’m pretty sure it’s something along those lines anyway.
Magscar…I can send you a copy of my notes, if you’d like?
Who personalised things today? I didn’t think it was personal. I asked how he came to the conclusion that some out there will never be happy.
As for the rest of your post, what is it you’re actually saying (again)?

Comment #185Bobby…I’d like to think you and I, and anyone else who wishes, can continue to debate without it being considered a form of bullying.
I’d also like to think you’d point out if I was rude or unreasomable, as I have done when I think you have. It’s communication for me, nothing more, nothing less.
I’m not going to jump in to the numbers you’ve supplied, as no, I wasn’t there personally. I have seen other accounts which differ from yours, and with all due respect, they’re from people who I have come to trust over time.
I’d perhaps focus on another aspect. If the ‘genuine fans’ would entertain the idea for a minute that we can actually do something to bring change, things could be easier and less extreme?
I know and have spoken with people who attended the rallies. I’d consider them genuine toon fans with their hearts in the right place. You appear to have tarred the majority of them with the same brush, which is basically miserable people looking for a ruck.
Can you tell me some of the misinformation they were giving out?
