Newcastle were very interested in signing Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette a year ago, after Graham Carr had picked him out as a striker who could do well at Newcastle in the Premier League.
But for whatever reason we couldn’t get him in, and he went on to have an excellent season at the French club and scored 31 goals in 40 games and this season he has one goal in seven appearances.

That was a penalty on Sunday at Marseille so he’s struggled a bit this season for goals, but that first goal of the season will give him lots of confidence.
There was news in the Sunday People that we would be after Lacazette in January, and while it looks like we’ll have to bring a striker in along with a top center-back – there seems no way that Alexandre will leave Lyon – not in January anyway.
With the Euro 2016 finals being hosted by France next summer, he will not want to move before those Championships and will be hoping to make the French squad.
That’s also a reason why Moussa Sissoko (of “I want to play Champions League” fame) will also not be leaving Newcastle in January.
But maybe Moussa needs to show by his play at Newcastle he is worthy of joining a Champions League club.
It’s possible we could get Lacazette in next summer, but simply no chance in January.
Alexandre has a good record at Lyon with 70 goals and 34 assists in 193 total appearances for the only club he’s played for.
We hope Newcastle are talking to QPR right now to seal a deal for Charlie Austin in January – something in retrospect we should have done in the summer.
Hopefully, Lee Charnley is now talking to Les Ferdinand about Charlie’s transfer in January.

Comment #3The ironic thing for the fat controller is that we’ve ended up paying way over the odds for some of our long term targets and completely defeated the purpose of our scouting system, ie to find gems before they become big news.

Comment #5We’ll do well to get anyone in come Jan. We would ruin Messi if we had him! What do we do in training?
