Newcastle Field Strong Team Against Sheffield Wednesday

6:47 pm, Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 315 Comments

nufc emblem150px-Sheffield_Wednesday.svg

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has just announced the team for the 3rd round of the League Cup (Capital One Cup) tonight at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat (c), Mike Williamson, Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba; Vurnon Anita, Georginio Wijnaldum; Florian Thauvin, Moussa Sissoko, Gabriel Obertan; Siem de Jong
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Kevin Mbabu, Fabricio Coloccini, Dan Barlaser, Yoan Gouffran, Ayoze Perez, Ivan Toney

Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire)

Mbemba starts at left back with Haidara being injured so it will be good to see if our new singing can play anywhere across the back four – which would be very good.

Perez is surprisingly on the bench for tonight and Williamson and Lascelles again are in the heart of the Newcastle defense in this League Cup tie.

Anita and Wijnaldum are the two holding midfielders and Siem de Jong is the one up front, with Sissoko in the number ten position.

Siem has played this position before for Ajax and he is so skillful he can score from almost anywhere – let´s hope he can get one tonight.

There´s no Rolando Aarons tonight, but it´s good to see Obertan getting another chance – he may be a player who can set up some chances.

McClaren is fielding a very strong side and that´s good, because we need the win to raise the confidence of our players  – a win tonight will do the team a world of good.

This is what Steve McClaren has said about this game this week:

“Looking at the situation they will expect to win.” “A good team. I know them from last season. They have changed their manager and style, good players.”

“We have to do a performance that proves the doubters wrong.” “I won’t know the team until lunchtime today.”

“We are checking on some of them then, so we will have to wait and see.”

About three in five fans expect us to win tonight.

    Is arrons injured?

Who is Barlaser, dare I ask?

  • 3 Jib // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:54 PM

    Dan Barlaser young striker

  • 4 Obafan // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:55 PM

Positives: no Colback; Colocini and Cissé.
Negatives: – again no 4-4-2 (ideal to try that formation tonight)
    – Our strongest CB is played as LB
    – Put Sissoko instead of Anita, De Jong instead of Sissoko and play Perez upfront (if you want to play with 1CF). Cause De Jong is not a striker, so we are playing without a

    Barlaser with pedro

  • 6 JP...from The Rock // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:56 PM

It’s true where the hell is Aarons?? It will be interesting to see how de Jong does. I hope he’s not playing as the lone striker or else we’re fkd.

  • 7 Obafan // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:56 PM

(continue from my previous post) real striker. Strange set up.

  • 8 croftus5678 // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:57 PM

    @3 jib

barlaser is a winger isnt he ?

good little player but not our best prospect tbh.

come on boys a big win tonight please before we get mullered in our next 2 games.

  • 9 Thump // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:57 PM

@Ron Knee: 18 year old forward. Highly rated within the academy, apparently.

  • 10 SUTTY1978 // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:57 PM

Jib, sure he’s a right back turned into a right winger, not a striker

  • 11 swemag // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:58 PM

    Aarons?

  • 12 toon kk // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:58 PM

Where’s Aarons I thought it would be the perfect game for him.

Disappointed with no Aarons, if he’s injured fair enough, if not McClaren should be lynched!

  • 17 swemag // Sep 23, 2015 at 6:59 PM

    Actually glad to see Obertan.

  • 21 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Sep 23, 2015 at 7:03 PM

Unless Aarons is getting saved for Chelsea game ?

Hope Mbemba does not have to run himself into the ground at left back !!

  • 22 croftus5678 // Sep 23, 2015 at 7:03 PM

rolando not available as he signing his new 20year extention contract with us !

ner tbh i agree he should be playing but they did say his appearances would be limited untill he does sign a new contract as they dont want him in the shop window.

  • 23 SUTTY1978 // Sep 23, 2015 at 7:03 PM

Also Mbemba at LB? How about sticking Anita there because
    A he’s crap in midfield
B he played mainly at LB for Ajax
C Mbemba is our best CB
D Mbemba has never played at LB but plays int. games in def midfield

All round makes no sense whatsoever.

  • 24 toonking // Sep 23, 2015 at 7:04 PM

can’t find anything about an injury to him so far, my only other conclusion would be he must be starting against chelsea, if not then here is a manager who really has such awful team selection, pardew himself always seemed to start arrons and when he doesn’t you’d see him on the bench.

  • 25 geordie157 // Sep 23, 2015 at 7:04 PM

Not too bad, hope lascelles has a good game. Mbemba left back?

  • 26 SUTTY1978 // Sep 23, 2015 at 7:05 PM

Way too early to be saying Mclaren is worse than Pardew was.

Pardew had a good first full season (just like every single club he’s ever worked at), but he couldn’t fix a few obvious problems in 3 more seasons. Mclaren’s had 2 months, our defence sucked under Pardew for years!

  • 121 toonking // Sep 23, 2015 at 8:39 PM

“we’ve got a team that doesn’t look like it wants to play” exactly what I myself would have said and TBH it’s true what they say about the bench because really that too won’t make much a difference, we could have started perez instead of tauvin or sissoko but when the majority of the team play like this lot it won’t make that big a difference at all other than a fraction less crap than we see.

  • 122 JackButler // Sep 23, 2015 at 8:39 PM

Can’t believe that there are already some muppets calling SM’s head already, well I can believe it actually as reality is a concept unknown to many it seems, but in truth he’s not helping himself or us, for that matter by persisting with a formation that is not working

  • 127 croftus5678 // Sep 23, 2015 at 8:45 PM

we are erm not good ans i’m a realist lol.

i’ll be honest at this point both sides are rubbish but wed’s look more the prem side than we do ! every single player is giving the ball away more than they are passing to their team mates.

an almost full second team for wed’s who’s first team players have only managed 1 win in 7 and they are a lot better than an almost full international team lol.

tooney would be better than our strike force atm ! big problems at the club i think if even the dutch footballer of the year “wijnaldum” cant even get one pass to his team mate confidence must be rock bottom.

Pardew himself didn’t really have as long as you think to sort out things, that team he had during the first spell has over the years seen more and more damage done without improvement prior to last season.

Today he has decided to just take off jam, our most decent player and also give that captains armband to a player who is action like a mercunrie.

had cisse or ba been the main Cf wouldn’t have seen a difference because without Ba cisse himself would drop him form because he’d not have that second CF assisting him which we currently see.

I honestly think it doesn’t matter who the manager is as we are that broken no one man could fix us or make us into a cohesive unit.

The harsh reality is that we are made of championship standard players, our captain is a disgrace to the shirt and armband and yet he gets a new deal.

Going after the players or manager is a waste of energy as it’s the system that brings them here that’s wrong, and until people realise that nothing will change as Ashley will always be there pulling the strings and mugging us all off

This current Newcastle team highlights everything wrong with modern football. A team full of mercenaries not willing to fight for their own pride, let alone a win.

I defended McClaren and was really willing to give him a shot but the bloke is clearly out of his depth. I’m not sure anyone could motivate these cowards. I remember Shearer playing with that blood soaked bandage on his head, still giving 100%, can’t see any of this current lot doing anything like that.

We spent £50 million this summer and the squad is no better for it, Carr has wasted the vast majority of money he has had, our chairman is a glorified secretary and our owner doesn’t give a damn but people pin point SM and the players as the cause, it’s laughable mate.

I spoke to a season ticket holder last season who said that he would never miss a game at SJP no matter what and it’s that kind of loyalty to the club that Ashley survives off of and if we are relegated with the amount of money that’s now in the game we could find it near impossible to come back

We’re so messed up I don’t think a manager will solve our issues.

    We don’t have any leaders.

One of the reasons I’ve always said pardew was far too heavily critised is because with a system like our current one would have made things very difficult for him.

He’s currently doing great at palace and this palace team was a one almost relegated last season showing he’s not as bad as we thing when he is allowed his own choice of players which he wasn’t allowed to have here and even great managers like morineo have had a number of poor forms during 3rd season.

Some of the new arrivals might not deserve much abuse but it’s the likes of sissoko, cisse, anita and colo that mainly get the critism sissoko and cisse especially because they are certainly showing a mercuneries attitude.

  • 280 BlacknWhiteBarmy // Sep 23, 2015 at 9:44 PM

The reason Pardew got grief was that he did not have the balls to stand up to FatAsh, the amount times he was ‘promised’ new signings and then got none – only to say that he was happy with the squad.

English players are generally stupid thugs who never even went to school and don’t go on to make good managers.
