Newcastle Field Strong Team Against Sheffield Wednesday

nufc emblem150px-Sheffield_Wednesday.svg

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has just announced the team for the 3rd round of the League Cup (Capital One Cup) tonight at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat (c), Mike Williamson, Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba; Vurnon Anita, Georginio Wijnaldum; Florian Thauvin, Moussa Sissoko, Gabriel Obertan; Siem de Jong
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Kevin Mbabu, Fabricio Coloccini, Dan Barlaser, Yoan Gouffran, Ayoze Perez, Ivan Toney

Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire)

Mbemba starts at left back with Haidara being injured so it will be good to see if our new singing can play anywhere across the back four – which would be very good.

Perez is surprisingly on the bench for tonight and Williamson and Lascelles again are in the heart of the Newcastle defense in this League Cup tie.

Anita and Wijnaldum are the two holding midfielders and Siem de Jong is the one up front, with Sissoko in the number ten position.

Siem has played this position before for Ajax and he is so skillful he can score from almost anywhere – let´s hope he can get one tonight.

There´s no Rolando Aarons tonight, but it´s good to see Obertan getting another chance – he may be a player who can set up some chances.

McClaren is fielding a very strong side and that´s good, because we need the win to raise the confidence of our players  – a win tonight will do the team a world of good.

This is what Steve McClaren has said about this game this week:

“Looking at the situation they will expect to win.” “A good team. I know them from last season. They have changed their manager and style, good players.”

“We have to do a performance that proves the doubters wrong.” “I won’t know the team until lunchtime today.”

“We are checking on some of them then, so we will have to wait and see.”

About three in five fans expect us to win tonight.

Positives: no Colback; Colocini and Cissé.
Negatives: – again no 4-4-2 (ideal to try that formation tonight)
    – Our strongest CB is played as LB
    – Put Sissoko instead of Anita, De Jong instead of Sissoko and play Perez upfront (if you want to play with 1CF). Cause De Jong is not a striker, so we are playing without a

It’s true where the hell is Aarons?? It will be interesting to see how de Jong does. I hope he’s not playing as the lone striker or else we’re fkd.

@Ron Knee: 18 year old forward. Highly rated within the academy, apparently.

Disappointed with no Aarons, if he’s injured fair enough, if not McClaren should be lynched!

Also Mbemba at LB? How about sticking Anita there because
    A he’s crap in midfield
B he played mainly at LB for Ajax
C Mbemba is our best CB
D Mbemba has never played at LB but plays int. games in def midfield

All round makes no sense whatsoever.

can’t find anything about an injury to him so far, my only other conclusion would be he must be starting against chelsea, if not then here is a manager who really has such awful team selection, pardew himself always seemed to start arrons and when he doesn’t you’d see him on the bench.

Surely Anita would have been the bette choice

Thauvin and obertan on the flanks and Dejong and Perez upfront
    Surely

That team’s about a strong as a wet wipe…no back bone and a sh!te defence…I can see us letting in 2 so depends on how many we score. They know we’re fragile and will come at us strong…our first half display will determine the outcome of this game
