Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has just announced the team for the 3rd round of the League Cup (Capital One Cup) tonight at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat (c), Mike Williamson, Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba; Vurnon Anita, Georginio Wijnaldum; Florian Thauvin, Moussa Sissoko, Gabriel Obertan; Siem de Jong
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Kevin Mbabu, Fabricio Coloccini, Dan Barlaser, Yoan Gouffran, Ayoze Perez, Ivan Toney

Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire)

Mbemba starts at left back with Haidara being injured so it will be good to see if our new singing can play anywhere across the back four – which would be very good.

Perez is surprisingly on the bench for tonight and Williamson and Lascelles again are in the heart of the Newcastle defense in this League Cup tie.

Anita and Wijnaldum are the two holding midfielders and Siem de Jong is the one up front, with Sissoko in the number ten position.

Siem has played this position before for Ajax and he is so skillful he can score from almost anywhere – let´s hope he can get one tonight.

There´s no Rolando Aarons tonight, but it´s good to see Obertan getting another chance – he may be a player who can set up some chances.

McClaren is fielding a very strong side and that´s good, because we need the win to raise the confidence of our players  – a win tonight will do the team a world of good.

This is what Steve McClaren has said about this game this week:

“Looking at the situation they will expect to win.” “A good team. I know them from last season. They have changed their manager and style, good players.”

“We have to do a performance that proves the doubters wrong.” “I won’t know the team until lunchtime today.”

“We are checking on some of them then, so we will have to wait and see.”

About three in five fans expect us to win tonight.
