Jose Mourinho was lucky to get away with a point today when Newcastle were 2-0 up with just 11 minutes to go, but Chelsea came back with two late goals to get a 2-2 draw – and still Mourinho has never won a league game at St. James’ Park.
An animated and annoyed Jose Mourinho today
Jose Moutinho after the game gave his opinion on why Newcastle United have never won anything for many decades.
This is what the Chelsea manager said:
“I think maybe one of the reasons why Newcastle over the years doesn’t get good positions is because of this mentality.”
“It’s because they choose some matches to sweat blood and in other matches, they don’t. This is an attitude typical of a team that wins nothing.”
“It’s bad for them because if they play like this, they win many matches at home, and they don’t. but this is their problem.”
Newcastle certainly showed up for this game – as we also did against other top teams this season like Manchester United and Arsenal.
Yet we didn´t seem to bother turning up against West Ham, Watford and Sheffield Wednesday – three games we lost.
So Jose might have a point there.
If we only turn up against the top teams and don´t bother turning up against the lesser teams – that´s one way to minimize the points we get in a season.
What do you think?

Comment #1Before anybody gets their rose tinted ones out – he’s absolutely bang on. He complained about it last season and he’s complaining about it again, and he has a right to. Had we have showed up to every game this season with that same intensity, we’d be in the top 6.

But the way his team is playing with their one player worth 7 of ours I would keep my mouth shut.
Ok…so the basic premise is we are completely inconsistent.
I also put Macca to blame here.
To me this performance is his undoing too to be honest. Manager gets the players to play and perform.
The consistency is HIS job or to try and get them to be consistent.
Truly need to keep on playing like this. Mitro is a huge contributor.
He keeps taking defenders on him. Wijnaldum needs to be taken a little wider out of the CM chaos. PL congestion there does not suit him.
Haidara for me should be dropped for a foreseeable future.
I would stay away from Obertan, can’t keep ball, got poor control.
Subs where pointless today. I have no idea whey have the players started second half on back foot. We allowed them back in the game no idea why.
Defending set pieces should be drilled week in week out. Until we get it right. This is the FIRST game of the season we where good.
More accurately the first half. FFS the players really need to deliver.

Comment #3Sorry we played well jose – NOT 😉 You, of all people should know to expect a game, so why the bitterness? On what planet would we do that deliberately? Go have a word with the doctor…. oh, forgot she blew you out. 😉

Comment #4Mitrovic and Perez were great, but so were Anita and Colback. That’s hardly a coincidence. The team has sorely lacked outlets up top and through the middle. It’s really encouraging, but yes, the players and the crowd will always be up for this type of game. It’s the less glamorous ones where the occasion is so often muted. That of course can change, if we can build some momentum and get in a position to challenge for Europe or a domestic Cup, which we aren’t, but that performance was by any standards good and promising.

Comment #5Mitrovic’s passion gives me goosebumps. He threw Pérez about like a rag doll during both celebrations, but them 2 seem to be forming a good partnership and getting on well as mates

Comment #6Mitrovic will be a key and vital player in the Derby, exactly what you need against your biggest rivals, a nuscence for defenders and has passion and fight

Comment #8Just to spark some discussion, does anyone think if Sir Bobby was never sacked that we might have attracted Jose as his successor? Would anyone have wanted him here?

Comment #9You have to say we played very well in the first half, something we haven’t seen for a long time.
Chelsea turned the screws in the second half. But a point is a point.
We need everyone we can get.

Comment #10In fairness, Macca did say it would take time to gel and we looked like a team today. On another day we’d’ve been out of sight before chelsea scored and hopefully we can build on this. We outplayed the champions for the majority of the game – not bad for joint bottom imo.

Comment #11These comments from a disgruntled mourinho smack of his class or lack of! The man hates losing which is understandable but when you’ve been taught by a gentleman such as sir Bobby who was gracious in defeat GROW UP MOURINHO.NOT FIT TO LACE SIR BOBBYS BOOTS

Comment #12a hard fought draw against man u, a hardfought game against arsenal with 10 men, played well against chelsea ( untill they woke up and upped it a notch) crap against , west ham, watford , swansea, sheff wed. theres a pattern there ( a worrying pattern i think ) why cant SM get them fired up for the less glamorous games.
jose is bang on – for some reason they turn up when they feel like it. If this team were motivated by SM today then i would fully expect him to work his magic against the lesser teams . We shall see.
Ok we did ok in the first half however , we all know that up till now chelsea are having a night mare start to the season , so maybe we played them at the right time and to be honest they should have nicked it really, but , apoints a point, even though its against a chelsea side that havnt reached 3rd gear yet.

Comment #13It was a Parson’s Egg of a performence. Disgusted to see us playing the short corner to waste time with 30 seconds to go at home. You get what you deserve but that lack of ambition from the bench did not do justice to the effort and courage shown by the players earlier in the match. It was unworthy of McLaren. And his 3 substitutions were completely baffling.

Comment #14Sav I can see your point as it was a goal scoring opportunity wasted. I’m not sure if it was a bench or player decision but a defeat would have destroyed us so in retrospect a draw wasn’t a bad result and if you’d asked me if I would have taken a draw before the game the answer would have been yes.
Jimmysmith has hit the nail on the head regarding Colback and Anita, they are both critical to improving results and I hope the knock Colback took is minor, he’s had his knockers but for me he is a key player who IMO should be club captain.
McClaren needs time and a couple of more players. It was a good performance and hopefully one we will build on.

Comment #15BobbyBee’s comment “In fairness, Macca did say it would take time to gel and we looked like a team today”
What he didnt say was that it would take a complete change of plan, formation and tactics before we looked anything like a team. Ditching 1 upfront and the slow “passy passy” game helped enormously. Maybe McWally has a brain after all ?

Comment #16I agree with every word jose.
We are a bunch of losers
Theyve proved to be season after season
Players play below average because they are!!!
Get rid of
Obertan,colback.de jong,thauvin,cisse,colocini,anita,
Williamson,tiote,
All div1 or 2 players playing above what theyre actually capsble of sadly
