Steve McClaren – we were a team today
Here is Steve McClaren´s Sky Sports interview after today´s game when the lads played really well to draw 2-2 with Chelsea – but we were 2-0 up with only 11 minutes to play.
But it was still an excellent performance from the lads.

Comment #1I hope Mclaren realises now that 4231 does not work with the players we have
Its funny but our best performances in recent memory were West Ham last season and Chelsea today and funnily enough we played 442 in both of them !!!
All this Tiki Taki that we were attempting before is so boring that was more like it for entertainment people forget we were quite direct in the Keegan and Robson era’s nothing wrong with a quick ball up to the forwards and crosses going into the box !!
City are woeful at the back they will not fancy playing against Mitrovic and Perez if they play they gave Chelsea a torrid time until they tired so refreshing compared to Cisse who just lets teams bully him and does nothing to get involved

Comment #2I’m gonna be nasty because I feel we dropped two points today. Why THAT substitution? Why play a whole half with 10 players? The minute he came on I knew that was the end of our controlling the game.
Congrats to the team, however. Given the flow of the game, gutted like AS. This league needs wins, draws aren’t enough.

Comment #4If I was being picky probably would not have brought Toney on he should have went defensive and brought Lascalles or Williamson on for their height and went with 3 centre backs defending everything if he wanted to park the bus !! Thats what Jose would have done if it was the other way around!
Must say Mbabu impressed me would Haidara have done any better ? Maybe give him a run for a few games to see how he copes

We played 4-2-3-1 today have no idea what you are on about.
If you watched them match we set up that way from minute 1.
Obertan coming on changed game he offers so little passion he had no desire to help the youngster.
It felt like a loss today drawing after winning 2-0 with 20 mins to go.
Mitrovic, Mbemba, Perez, Anita, Mbabu top mentions for me.
Sissoko was stupid giving fouls and it was his fouls that lead to the 2nd goal and nearly a 3rd goal. He’s too clumsy to play in defense which is why he needs to stay out wide.
Better, but we need a win! If we play that way against lower opposition we could win.

Comment #6Never seen that Nbabu guy, was very good, keeps his place in my book. Widji, Colback were tops, as were Anita, Colo, Mbemba, Krul. Sissoko could’ve done more but was decent, as was Jan. Mitro huffed and puffed, I expect more, actually. And then there’s… Obertan…. what to say man.
Knew that somehow we would be pulled back, although he wasn’t directly at fault, TBH.

Newcastle United (4-4-2): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Kevin Mbabu; Moussa Sissoko, Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback, Georginio Wijnaldum; Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic
From the Official Newcastle website
It kind of worked out as Perez playing wherever he wanted but he should not be slapped out wide anymore he needs to be in the box as he is great finisher when in the mood
Siem De Jong though !? Is he just the most unlucky player injured after 2 mins on the field!!

Comment #8Our players look tired before both goals scored. I think Obertan was the wrong solution personally it was like playing with 10 men for the last 30-40 minutes.
He is awful.
Our injury problems clearly still exist, Cisse, Tiote, Colback, Dummett, Haidara, Aarons I mean it’s not stopped despite the new backroom.
I think Sm was mostly at fault for the change he made. I think I would have put Lascelles in and brought Mbemba into Cdm.

Do not care what the Nufc site said they at no point in the match had Mitrovic and Perez beside each other.
It was 4-2-3-1 with Wijnaldum at left, Perez no 10 and Sissoko on right. Fact.

Comment #10Its amazing Mbabu was considered terrible by Rangers last season that they would not play him and Pardew never gave him a game kid must have grown up over the summer

He got a shoulder to chin. He came back on though.

Comment #12hahaha of course everyone pllayed brillinatly today but this is Newcastle fans we still need to moan about something…. Wait a minute Obertan came on? lets moan at him, yeah but he didn’t really do anything wrong? Yeah but so we are Newcastle fans and it is our duty to have a go at him.
Sissoko was the lad who couldn’t be bothered today and he is the only person who should be getting blamed for 2 points dropped.

Comment #13Let’s not get carried away in regards to Mbabu.
Dummett had a great first game and we all know what happened after that.
He’s got promise and we will wait and see what he can do.
City next week though, loss for me. Anything more a bonus.

Comment #14Cyprus, the subs were forced by injury mate. They were pushing us back and I presume he wanted Obertan’s pace to relieve some pressure. Great performance all round. We need to bear in mind we were joint bottom playing the current champions and give the whole lot the credit they earned today. Imo anyway.

Obertan had no desire to help Mbabu.
He did nothing when coming on he basically walked around and often let the left flank 2 V 1.
Not that we had much to offer on bench but he was not the right option when you are defending.

Comment #20Will say though Sissoko looked a little lost out wide today and Wijnaldum looked much better out wide
If Colback is injured then maybe move Sissoko to the middle although its going to have to be Thauvin or Obertan on the wing god we should have bought a winger in the summer!!!
Absolutely love Mitrovic got such a buzz watching him flying into headers and his celebrations at both goals were excellent such passion

Comment #21A very entertaining match to watch. The end was disappointing obviously. Good to see us get a couple of goals. Chelsea didn’t look up to it for most of the game. I wouldn’t stop being concerned if I was McLaren though.

Comment #22With regards Mbabu, he was excellent for the academy until just over a ago when he suffered a nasty injury, otherwise we might have seen him pushing for a place last season. I’ve seen him play right back, centre back and now left back and he’s never let the team down. He’s naturally a right back, although after today’s performance you wouldn’t know it. I wasn’t surprised by his performance today and expect him to continue his progress as the season moves on. Looks like our academy is finally producing the goods 😉

Comment #24The free kick that led to the 2-2 goal in the 84th minute is a joke. We deserved a victory and the second chelsea goal was due to a poor ref decision. I have watched this over and over…

Comment #25It was a good buzz seeing a young product make their debut in a big game and deliver !
Watched so many games over the years as a Newcastle fan and see other teams play a youngster only for them to have a stormer against us !!

Comment #27Abbott, imo the ref was just looking to give them chances to get back into the game. The free kick was very close to where I sit and certainly looked soft at best and downright wrong at worst. No change there then eh?

Comment #28The upcoming Norwich, mackems, and stoke games are huge for us after Man City. We need six points out of those 3. If we lose all three it will destroy any good feeling generated out of this match but if we get 6 points or more we might even climb out of the bottom 3.

Comment #32Good performances out of many of our players. If we can sustain that over many games we can make a season of it. But that is always a big question with us. And then the injuries mount as well. We still have a very small squad. De Jong seems destined to be nothing but a fill-in and sick note. Really felt sorry for him today with the stotted heed.

Comment #34We will get there. Mcca is a good manager.
Best team: 4-4-2.
………………………Krul
Janmatt……Mbemba……Colo…..Mbabu
Wijnaldum….Anita……Colback. …Thauvin
…………………Perez………Mitrovic
Every time Aarons gets a chance to start he gets injured. Kid is cursed. Sissoko is another one that needs to bench.

Are you ppl drunk it was def 442
the two up front was Ayoze Perez in the CF/CAM role…what are you on about? It just seemed he was CAM because he was all over park.
in fact it a way it was a 4222 formation tightly packed….VERY effective. All positions moving into each other.
People ripping into Mbabu already….sickening….Lad was immense…

Comment #36Great 1st half performance, which we probably looked better down to Chelsea being poor, the table turned in the second half. But at least we got a point, it’s more than the majority thought we’d get.
Perez and Mitrovic played very well.

Comment #37Following City, we’ve got a run of games where we can take points from each match and we need to capitalise on that. If we can produce performances like today on a regular basis, we can march up the table. We know now we have the ability. Mitrovic was the missing link and despite not scoring, he pulled defenders away from Perez for his goal and had so many trying to mark him on the corner, allowed Gini to arrive late with the second. It was a great team performance and coming straight after our worst performance made it all the more satisfying.
