We had written before the game that it was interesting that our three poor performances in the last three games were without Aleksandar Mitrovic in the side, and he showed yesterday what an important player he is at Newcastle, because he offers a threat up front and is a physical player.
My son Neil got it right after the game when he said the two Chelsea center backs were scared stiff of the Serbian all during the game, until he was taken off near the end to great applause from the appreciative Newcastle crowd.
Finally yesterday we were threatening in the final third of the field.
Aleksandar Mitrovic in action yesterday
It seems that Aleksandar was born to play for Newcastle, and he was calling on the fans for their support when he left the field and we were still 2-1 up.
The partnership of Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic up front looked so promising yesterday, and they are 22 and 21 respectively and seem to have a decent understanding already.
Maybe we should call them the A team?
The physical presence of Mitrovic coupled with the skills of Ayoze Perez hopefully will start to get us some goals and Perez scored a wonderful goal for us yesterday just before half time – so classy.
This lad must start for us from now on and have an extended run in the side – he is becoming even better than he was last season – and that;s a good sign.
Both players also seem to just love things at Newcastle, even though we are going through one of our worst starts in our Premier League history.
Maybe it wasn´t surprising the team were just a bit nervous about holding onto the lead last night, given we had won just one league game in the last 17.
We need a league win – and maybe we can even get that at the Etihad Stadium next Saturday afternoon.
That will be very tough, but we cannot have another letdown after yesterday´s performance.
We thought we had no chance at all yesterday and 75% in our poll thought we would lose the game yesterday – we were just waiting for the first Chelsea goal to come.
Tells you how wrong we were – Newcastle were fantastic yesterday even though we didn´t win the game – the spirit shown by the players lifted the fans – and we needed that.
All we need is a win!
