The Sun are reporting today that Newcastle are interested in signing 22 year-old Burnley centre-back Michael Keane, the former Manchester United youngster who signed on at Burnley last January after spending the first half of last season on loan at The Clarets.
Newcastle are likely to bring in a centre-back and a striker in January and the number of players Newcastle will sign will probably depend on what position we are in the league by then.
Michael Keane – Newcastle interested in the Burnley central defender
Although Newcastle put on a display of courage and guts and quite a bit of skill yesterday against Chelsea, the PL Champions were able to come back from two goals down to draw the game – scoring their two goals in the last 11 minutes of play after Perez and Wijnaldum had put us two goals ahead.
So while it was a good performance we still don´t have our first league win and are still in 19th place with 3 points from the first seven games played.
But there are still 13 league games to play by January 2nd so there´s ample opportunity to start picking up points and moving up the league table – which is what we need to do – the sooner the better.
Newcastle have already been linked with 23 year-old Schalke center back Joel Matip and 23 year-old Wolfsburg center back Robin Knoche, who are both tall powerful defenders.
The advantage that Keane would have is that he played in the Premier league last season for Burnley and he would come to terms with playing for Newcastle a lot more quickly than the two players from the Bundesliga.
This is not a new story and initial reports of Newcastle´s interest came out a couple of weeks ago.
Everton would be interested in signing Keane but only if they allow John Stones to leave in January, and since they have turned down some huge offers from Chelsea for Stones in the summer why would they change their minds and sell him in January?
Michael played for Steve McClaren for a couple of months in November of 2013, while McClaren was the manager at Derby County so the head coach at Newcastle is well aware of how good he is, and Newcastle are now supposed to be the favorites to sign this player.
Michael has played for the U17 Ireland side because of his Irish ancestry, but he has also played for the England U19, U20, and U21 sides – playing 16 times with 3 goals for the England U21 side.
We think Michael would be an excellent buy and it will be good to have the 6´ 2¨ tall Englishman in the Newcastle squad.
What do you think?

If this Ben Arfa or whatever’s that good, you can bet your boots that Carr’ll be on the case and we’ll have him signed up in January.

Comment #7A lot of our French imports have had great success while playing in France, however, the EPL is a different animal. Mapou, Marveuax, Gouffran, Rivière, Obertan, Cabella and Thauvin have all stood out at one time or another while playing over there but have all failed to live up to expectations over here although it’s early day with Thauvin.
And Mapou is now back in France

Agree mate, it’s the type of players we go after that’s the issue. Wenger has proven what can be bought from France, but Carr goes for the wrong type imo. A lot of them are not strong enough to deal with this league while the pace of it catches the others out

Comment #11That side, apart from Colo, simply because of age, and Mbabu because of inexperience, looks the core of a capable squad. Others such as De Jong, Thauvin, Rivierre, Marveaux, Haidarra, Lascelles, Aarons, still have much to do, to cement a place in the group, others like Willo, Taylor, Cisse, Gouffran, Obertan look to be on their way out.
There’s little reason to not take the club at it’s word regarding goals and ambitions. The side did play some lovely stuff at times, and did put in a shift. Everybody did well. It will continue to buy young, quality players and some will do better than others, but overall the team will progress and the squad. will change over the next few windows and we will push on, this seems increasingly clear, as much as anything ever is in football. In the short term, the side needs to show up week in week out, and that’s going to be a tough ask, when injuries and suspension force McC to turn to players, who know they don’t feature in the clubs longer term plans.

Our french imports have struggled but others clubs french imports haven’t struggled. Says more about us than the the french league mate. Don’t see Payet having any issues, or Gomis or ayew or martial. I could go on but we’d be here a while. As for the attitude problem hba had whilst being here…..he didn’t like pardews tactics I think we all had the same issues. Does that mean we also have attitude problems?

HBA has had issues at every single club he’s been at, not just under Pardew. He’s a talent but his attitude has dogged him everywhere he’s ever been, the lad even went on strike to get his move here

I know hos history you don’t need to tell me, he didn’t go on strike here is the point I’m making, he was forced out in a shameful way. His issue here was the same issue we all had…..pardew. he didn’t refuse to play for us, he didn’t go on strike, he questioned the managers tactics after being made a scapegoat for the umpteenth time and was exiled. I agree he’s been a trouble some player everywhere else though!!

Comment #19We have good attacking players. Ian Cathro shld find a way to use them. What we need is:
1. Starting LB
2. Starting CB to replace Colo
3. Backup Striker to replace Cisse
4. A new Winger to replace Sissoko.
5. A new CM.
Other players will come from tge academy and we have so many players still to prove themselves.

Disagree about Mbiwa not being able to hack it in the PL, he showed himself as a top talent whilst playing over in Roma and excelling at CL level. I genuinely think he was mismanaged whilst at the club and could have been a top player had he been given a chance here.
His being back in France isn’t an indicator for me that he can’t cut it at the top level.
Admittedly I do agree with the sentiment of your statement and the other players listed 😉

Comment #23Jeff show me all the times I’ve used the phrase then. And even then, if it’s in connection with you it’s accurate every time because you are a snide nit picking pedant who does exactly that, and what’s worse is you push yourself under your own wheels. And as far as being juvenile is concerned, acting as you do like the smarmy teachers pet, you’ve got no room to move on that score – so go polish your apple.

Cabaye inst a number 10 nor a winger not sure why it’s a case of either or he’d of put Anita back where he belongs and we would have more points right now

Comment #30Wijnaldum is way better than Cabaye. All the siginings we made r good. Thauvin scares me but let me hop he can get good.
In Aarons and Thauvin we have good wingers but it’s all down to Cathro to get the best out of them.

By his own abmition Mapou struggled in this league, Pardew did enough things wrong here without blaming him for things that were not his fault, and if he was so good at Roma then why is he back in France???

Can’t say I know the ins and outs at all. Perhaps he himself was actually keen to go back to France? He was a first team player for the year he spent at Roma so it wasn’t because they didn’t value him.
On the Santon debate – he was a dreadful player. Positionally atrocious and contrary to popular belief, offered next to nowt going forward. A waste of a shirt in my opinion. Wasn’t sorry to see him go but the way the club treated him was shoddy in my books.

As I said, MYM played over 30 games in his season at Roma and they finished 2nd in the league. He was valued there significantly more than he was here – where he never had more than 4/5 games consecutively at centre half.
Pardew was absolutely at fault for M’biwa not making it at our club.

Comment #35How can anyone say Winni is better than Cabaye, the latter was arguably our best player when here and Winni has been here for a few weeks and because of our form he’s not done a great deal, maybe in time he will prove to be a better signing but right now there’s no comparison between the two.
Or are people going off what he did in Holland?

Wijnaldum isn’t a winger mate, he can either play as a no 10 or as a box to box midfielder, same positions as cabaye. He played out wide against chelsea because the others have been shite. Dutch lads are known to be very versatile as they have no positions as kids.
Cabaye was good when he was here but since then he’s been rotting on a bench for 2 years and it shows in his performances for palace. The lads 30 or going to be 30 soon he would have been a disaster in this team as it already lacks pace
