Who would be a Premier League manager these days?
With the Internet and social media widely available now, those fairly new media outlets are used by football fans and anybody else to vent about football – and if things are not going well at any clubs some of the criticism is vicious – and I´m being kind.
Sam Allardyce – new Sunderland manager
How many times do you see Twitter wars going on with various people – it´s happening all the time here in the US at the moment with the Republican presidential candidates.
Donald Trump in particular seems to smash anybody who doesn´t agree with him – which is not exactly being presidential.
But I´m being picky.
Such is the modern world we suppose.
🙁
Sam Allardyce has just been appointed Sunderland manager and if anybody can get Sunderland safe this season it´s probably big Sam, who gets criticized but the man can deliver results when it´s necessary.
Sam will bring in former Newcastle caption Kevin Nolan, who´s a free agent at the moment, to help him turn around the dressing room.
Kevin is waning a bit on the pitch, but he´s a real leader in every sense of the word and will only help Sam turn things around at the Black Cats.
Sunderland fans seem pleased with the appointment and so they should be because bis Sam is a savvy manager dedicated to the job.
But Sam was criticized big time at Newcastle when he was at the club for a short eight months from May of 2007 until he as fired the following January.
This is what big Sam has said in the Sun today:
“When I was at West Ham my wife, Lynne, would constantly read the supporters’ website to see what new insults were being fired.”
“It upset her but she couldn’t keep away from the screen.” “Now she’s been reading the Sunderland fans’ site and she tells me the reaction has been very positive, which makes me feel very excited to get going.”
“It’s nice to be loved. But at West Ham and at Newcastle I was faced by passionate fans that made themselves heard if they weren’t happy.”
“It wasn’t just me at West Ham, it was every manager that was there.” “I got it because I was the manager at that time but before that they moaned about Avram Grant, Alan Curbishley, Alan Pardew and Harry Redknapp.”
“Look at Alan Pardew now and how his career has transformed.” “They gave him a hard time at Newcastle and he moved to Crystal Palace where the fans love him and the turnaround has been scary.”
It´s not good news for Sam that his wife Lynne is reading the web sites because things can get very nasty on those sites on and Twitter and Facebook.
Sam will be called things she never even thought possible.
🙂
Notice Sam doesn´t read them!
The only thing we are interested in is that we can break the five game losing streak to Sunderland in a couple of weeks time.
Another defeat in that game would be too much to take.
Comments welcome.

Comment #81Catchy, I think you are as pro SMC as you were anti Pardew . Pardews subsequent performance with Palace shows that its our club and scouting which is a mess, not just all the managers fault. Pardew should have been sacked long ago ( head butt etc ) , but the media isnt far wrong about him. He’s a middling manager who came to newcastle when we were middling and left us when we were middling. I think he had the wrong type of players to suit his football beliefs, ballsed up largely by Carr being top dog at the club and pushing through his own agenda. I also think Pardew lost his spark here big time and wanted out. Cant blame him for that. I am glad he is gone, but wholly unimpressed thus far with SMC, when i had expected better from him, given what so many ex players had said. . How sad to hear that Bayern will approach Teuchel as their next manager when the time comes. Cudda been us. I dont really want Rogers , but again, his hands were tied in the transfer market too, by the beliefs of Camolli and the owner in player analytics. It was this obsession with analytics of players gained from baseball/american football etc that led liverpool to buy dross players. Klopp wont put up with that, lucky scousers. Finally, as i said yesterday, Sunderlands appointment is a disaster for us – because they will be safe. So thats another team who wont go down. Helllllp.

Comment #82Just seen Hippo Heed on Sky News – stressing the importance of staying in the league because of the vast finances available next season. It suggests the Mackems are wanting to protect the prospective riches available and are doing something about it – at an early stage.
Meanwhile we are……………………we are ……… erm erm. Well looks like Wally is away on holiday for a few days break.

Agreed, but surely a manager should alter his style to suit the players?

I don’t think Fat Sam will guarantee sunderland’s survival. They are a club rotten to the core, very poor culture there which is why they always end up around 17-15th year in year out. Still a chance to go down in my opinion.
Catchy
I understand we have a losing mentality in the club. McClaren doesn’t seem any better than pardew for me in terms of playing for a draw and hoping for a win. We don’t commit many forward and seem to waste our chances to turn the momentum of a game.
Look at Klopp – he came in and there is already a buzz. He has said that even with these players he will get a title in 4 years, he makes the players believe and want to play for him.
Same as somebody like Mourinho….read Lampards book, he spoke to them all before they went to euro 2004, they couldn’t wait to get back and win titles with him. Interesting piece the other day which says mourinho’s 3rd season syndrome could be due to the players getting fed up with his methods, but initially they work.
McClaren isn’t inspiring, doesn’t seem to address issues and just comes across as dull for me.

That’s the difference between a decent manager and a good/great one.
Pardew has a style his is comfortable coaching and knows. It’s why he joined us after being sacked from league one and not after winning a champions league. He is a run of the mill manager.

Comment #86Last season we were the worst side in the league. Agreed? When Macca came in he said categorically it would take three windows to fix. Too many of our players are mentally scarred from the last few seasons and are holding us back. The players brought in so far are all better than what we had – including Thauvin despite a slow start, is better that Cabella. Presuming the next window also improves the squad, then we’re on our way. It’s going to be a tough season that should improve in January. Regardless of managers, some of our players simply aren’t good enough and never will be and until we replace them we’re in for a tough season. Comparing other failures to Macca simply isn’t fair because he’s won things – they haven’t. Can we not just give him chance to back up his plans before demanding him out? NOBODY could’ve turned us around in one window. Better games coming up, give him a chance eh?

Comment #87The only reason we have given Colo a further contract surely is because we know the player we are after and he is a make weight until we can get him.
Colo must know this and to be honest he is not going to bust a gut.
Which makes you think the player we are after must be quite costly and must be coming into the latter stages of his contract.
Or am I just looking for something to be hopeful about ?

Nobody could turn us around and make us a title winning side in one window but we are worse. Less points on the board, don’t look much of a threat, conceding for fun.
I will give a manager time if they deserve it, McClaren doesn’t, he is a poor manager.
He’s won the dutch league and a league cup with Boro.
He under performed with Derby, England, Wolfsburg twente the second time and Forrest.

Potentially. But that’s the problem with the way the club is ran. By not buying another CB and keeping Colo on we have a poor leader who throws the towel in when things get tough and are risking premier league survival for the sake of a few quid.
Sometimes you need to make a footballing decision on transfers and bite the bullet, paying that bit extra for the long run.

Comment #91Transfer, he’s not getting sacked mate, it simply won’t happen looking at Ashley’s record. He might have won two trophies, but he won them with much worse sides than Rodgers and that can’t be argued. He inherited garbage made, he’s not a miracle worker. Too many people think they know how to run a club. Sack Pardew? That worked. Sack Carver? Even better. Now sack Macca before he’s had chance to even get the players motivated and bring in his own players. A lot of our professional players are beyond help and until we move them on, we’ll struggle. Anybody who can win a trophy with Boro and Twente ain’t useless, not in any language.

Comment #92Why do people assume fat Sam will keep Sunderland up?
Like what Transfer said Sunderland is rotten to the core, yes Sam can keep teams up but have you’s seen the Sunderland squad?
Sunderland – decent manager – very poor squad.
Newcastle – good squad – poor manager.
There’s no balance for both clubs and as to why both clubs will probably get relegated.
Lucky for us we have Cathro ( who by the way has a similar style to Pep and Pep admires him because of this similarity in style ) who is waiting in the wings.

Comment #93There is a slight flaw in the assumption that we can simply spend our way out of trouble in January, and that is that there is no automatic precedence for it.
The last time we spent big in January (The Great Sissoko Panic Buy) we ended the month of January in 15th place on 24 points, four points clear of the relegation places.
We ended the season in 16th place, five clear of the relegation sports, having picked up just 17 more points.
Not a huge uptick in performance.

Comment #94I’m not a McClaren fan but I do see the difference in styles between him and Pardew.
True the boys need time to learn his way and Mitro, Winjaldum and Mbemba seem quality signings and stand out compare to the rest.
Anita also looks to enjoy his role at the back regardless of the criticism from this blog and I think there’s more to come from him.
Janmaat has also been a stand out but if I’m honest we need him on the wings on either side since he like to cut in and get goals.

Suit yourself, I think the bloke is garbage. Instead of pointing out his two successful spells look at the rest of his career, utter rubbish. He’s had some good moments but he isn’t a good manager in my opinion.
Pardew was no good for us, he wasn’t suited to the type of player we wanted to bring in, was pointless to keep him regardless of how well he does elsewhere.
Carver was dross, shouldn’t be near a professional team in this day and age, right to let him go, totally wrong to give him a job to start with.
I am fully aware McClaren won’t be sacked, Ashley doesn’t do that. I do think we will go down this year though unfortunately.
The players shoulder a lot of the blame I agree, a lot aren’t up to it, but that’s why it’s a collective failure.
Poor from the players, poor manager, poor appointment and recruitment by Carr and Charnley, but ultimately Ashley put an inexperienced idiot in charge of the club whilst setting the parameters he operates in. We are never going anywhere under him.

I’ll tell you what difference I see.
Both managers claim they like possession football (which I personally find slow and dull), both say they want to attack/entertain.
The difference is that under pardew we’d tap it around for a bit near the back then lump it long. Now we tap it around at the back before losing it in midfield.

I often feel our fans are more concerned with style than with points.
You’ll only get a team playing with style if you are prepared to shell out the cash to buy a number of talented ball players who can hack it in the premiership. This means big bucks being spent, and for the last eight years under Ashley that’s never been an option.
The sort of players we end up with season after season, youngsters with potential, untried at this level, largely unknown quantities, some of whom will quickly fall by the wayside, are not players we can expect to win matches with style.
If our coach manages to notch up three points every so often with the motley crew of a squad he is presented with, then he is doing as well as anyone could rightly expect of him.
You can forget the style thing as long as Ashley is here and just hope that whoever coaches the team can scrape together enough three pointers to keep us in the division.

Comment #100BandB&93…spot on on historical January spending comment. Moreover, our attractiveness to foreign daytripper journeymen won’t have diminished in the last 3 years, but it will have to more talented foreign players who are looking for a stepping stone to a ‘big’ club. Clogging around in the bottom three ona February afternoon won’t be that attractive to the 2016 equivalents of Debuchy, never mind the preening and lazy Sissokos of this world.

That’s not true though. I’m not expecting bayern munich or real madrid style football.
All I want is something along the lines of southampton or swansea. A team that will be middle of the road but will entertain.
I know we wont win the league and even the champions league is a long way off, so why not look to entertain instead of being a boring, scrappy team always hanging around the bottom third of the league.

I thought he was better than this mind and was going to give him a chance, but he is dull and doesn’t make sense when he talks.
People worry about possession to much, it’s what you do with it that counts, not just having it for the sake of it, playing in your own half and inviting pressure.

I’ll give you a few facts and a timeline – you draw your own conclusions.
Recently Werder Bremens director of football revealed the Everton and NUFC had both bid €18 million for Jannik Vestergaard in the Summer which was rejected by the player.
Meanwhile Stuttgart said on Friday 31st July that a big bid from England for Antonio Rüdiger of €18 million had fallen through because he had sustained meniscus damage in preseason training.
http://www.tz.de/sport/fussball/vfb-praesident-wahler-nationalspieler-ruediger-bleibt-stuttgart-zr-5304293.html
On Monday 3rd August Pardew denied he had put a bid in for Colo.
On Thursday 6th August , Colo who had not played all pre-season was offered a contract extension.

Comment #105Mags52…some decent points but ‘hoping’ to stay in the division just to exist is hardly a thing to keep the flame of passion alive for most football/sports fans. Then again, to the masses of wonga wearing, morally bankrupt drones and dummies, I think it could guarantee another 8 year serving of football gruel…perfect!

Problem is under Pardew we never really had much possession due to hoofball tactics by him, we were usually averaged around 35-45% possession each game.
McClaren though has averaged around 50-65% possession so far.
And don’t forget Pardew had Cabaye as our playmaker whilst McClaren doesn’t have a playmaker are any player at his disposal to hold possession up.
Pardew also likes a single target man to hoof the ball to all game every game whilst McClaren likes to use the wings to deliver to the TM and also uses the TM to hold up the ball for to bring others into play.

Comment #107People have to get real with our squad, let’s be honest, different managers bring different styles and ideas to which ever club they go to. But you have to have a basic qualities for certain things to work. So look at our squad, where’s the pace?, Aarons either injured on the bench and Gabby, say no more. Then there’s our defence? Or should I say what defence. Passing ability? Strikers not too bad but rely on scraps. Putting passes together? Hoofball is often the only way to get up the pitch as we’re so poor at possession.
So basically it wouldn’t matter who our coach/ manager is we haven’t a strong enough squad for the premier league.
Of course there’s our poor fitness levels, so 45mins then we’re totally exhausted.
The club also has a loosing mentality, which has been bought on by years of poor buys, penny pinching.
