Tiote, Colback And Dummett Start For Newcastle

3:01 pm, Sunday, October 18th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 354 Comments

nufc emblemNorwich City .svg

Steve McClaren has just announced his team for the vital game this afternoon against Norwich City and the head coach has recalled Paul Dummett, Jack Colback and Cheick Tiote.

We had a feeling that Cheick would get a recall in one of the central midfield positions and Dummett is preferred to Sadio Haidara for his first appearance of the season for Newcastle after recovering from a hamstring problem which was a carryover from last season.

Teams:

Newcastle (4-4-2): Rob Elliot; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Paul Dummett; Moussa Sissoko, Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback, Georginio Wijnaldum; Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Massadio Haidara, Jamaal Lascelles, Vurnon Anita, Siem de Jong, Florian Thauvin, Papiss Cisse

Norwich (4-4-1-1): John Ruddy; Steven Whittaker, Russell Martin (c), Sebastien Bassong, Martin Olsson; Natahn Redmond, Alexander Tettey, Graham Dorrans, Robbie Brady; Jonny Howson; Dieumerci Mbokani
Substitutes: Declan Rudd, Andre Wisdom, Ryan Bennett, Gary O’Neil, Wes Hoolahan, Matt Jarvis, Cameron Jerome

Referee: Anthony Taylor (Greater Manchester)

Rob Elliot comes in for the injured Tim Krul and Freddie Woodman is on the bench and Vurnon Anita gives way to Tiote.

Newcastle will play in a 4-4-2 formation with Mitrovic and Perez up front and Cheick Tiote and Jack Colback in central midfield.

The bench is strong withΒ Woodman, Haidara, Lascelles, Anita, de Jong, Thauvin and Papiss Cisse.

This is what head coach Steve McClaren has said about today’s game:

“We’re at home against Norwich, but it doesn’t matter who the opponent is this weekend – we have to perform.”Β “Norwich have been very good. It’s not surprising because they’ve got the confidence of promotion and have added very well.”

“They’re proving they can be a real handful and probably deserve to have picked up a few more points than they have done thus far.” Β “It’s about winning but it’s also about performance.”

“I’m not looking at the table just yet but I am looking at the performance and we’ve got to give one on Sunday.”

“We owe that to the crowd – we’ve got to fight and show the same level of support and effort against Norwich, as we saw against Chelsea.”

“Now is the time for our players to focus on doing their job, performing for 90 minutes and giving the fans what they want – do that and we will win games.”

More than one in two fans expect us to win this game today.

  • 2 Sliema // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:04 PM

    Wow, pretty underwhelming.

  • 3 AncientC // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:04 PM

Jarvis on the bench for Norwich, that’ll do.

  • 4 toonbrother // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:06 PM

if dummet is good enough to start at left back he’s good enough to start at LCB
    Mclaren has bottled it !
    again!

  • 5 CypriotDelight // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:06 PM

    Almondrichie u never know πŸ˜‰

Proper looking forward to this until it starts ha ha. One day we have to produce the goods, surely……

  • 6 TudorCrisps // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:07 PM

This teams had two weeks to gel so no excuses this time round, just can’t see where the creativity is coming from

  • 7 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:08 PM

when is the last time tiote looked good? 2013?

  • 8 toonarmydownsouth // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:08 PM

2 holding midfielders at home vs Norwich……..

Creative football at its finest then

Fully expect the defence to struggle with the bombardment of free kicks gifted to the opposition through the pairing of two of the clumsiest tw@’s to ever grace our midfield

  • 9 davetoon // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:10 PM

weird, i thought we were playing at home…

  • 10 Mister Tuff // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:10 PM

Jib Jibberish – are you commenting on the match today in your guise as Jib or Jane. If the later – do you go the whole hog and get dressed up as a woman – you know frillies, high heels and a splash of make-up.
I have a vision of you stumbling and tripping up with your high heels on (a la Dick Emery).

  • 11 optimistic prime // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:12 PM

I can’t understand the thinking of Tiote starting, when did he last play?
When did he last have a decent game?

Hope he proves me wrong but IMO it’s a bad move.

  • 12 CypriotDelight // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:13 PM

Not sure wat to think……my footie predictor is goin well and I have us down for a win, a clean sheet and mitrovic to score – go big or go home ha ha
Telford Utd won (that never happens unless the Toon win lol)
My family r all ill but I am fine (good sign or is the illness saving the best for last?)

I will go for a Toon win of 3 nil

  • 13 toonarmydownsouth // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:14 PM

    Poor nufc
Imagine spunk1ng Β£10m + Cabella on a winger not good enough to start at home Vs Norwich ahead of players played out of position

    Great stuff Carr

  • 14 Jib // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:14 PM

Shame Ed hasn’t posted the bench.
The subs are probably going to win the game for us today.
SdJ and Thauvin coming on , on the hour , I hope.

    Optimistic
From memory he last played properly around New Years, so 10 months ago…..
Can’t understand dropping Anita for him, had to be Colback, regardless of what anyone thinks of Anita there’s no denying playing 2 players who are identical in every way is utterly f**king pointless

JC CT – Can only pass sideways……if they can’t tackle it then there useless
Such a negative midfield, and once again with Gini wasted out wide, and Sissoko wasting a spot, where’s the service for the forwards come from?

  • 18 Douglas // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:18 PM

Came back to the house this morning to find 5 magpies on the roof and 1 in the tree opposite. Its a definite sign I tell you. (I’ll tell you after the result of what!)

  • 19 firebug666 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:19 PM

My worry is with Tiote, he gives away a lot of free kicks around our 18 yard box.

Heart says we should win today, but the head thinks we will grind out a dull draw.

but we never know when that day will be….at the start of the season i was expecting us a top 8 finish…but now i am hoping whether we will win our next match before 2016….atleast i will be happy with a 1-0 or 2-0 defeat today…nothing more than that…anyhow cheers mate…lets hope we are in for a treat today

0-0 first half colback off tiptoe off around 60 minutes to be replaced with thauvin and sdj 2-0 second half Perez with a brace

  • 25 geordie157 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:27 PM

At least it’s hopefully mitro and Perez as a front two. Would have given thauvin a start instead of sissoko.

  • 26 chicousa // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:28 PM

What? No Gouffy at DM??? I’m shocked!!! Hahaha
    3-1 today. HWTL!!!

  • 27 Munster Mag // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:29 PM

No creativity in central midfield. I think we will win 2-1 but cud be hard work. Wini and mitro.

  • 28 LGFUAD21 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:29 PM

I can see this formation with the payers selected being an absolute mistake.

No pace on the left. Dummet can do lb if he has a winger with enough pace to support him.

Gini and sissoko are not wingers. We can get away with playing one on then img but not both.

Getting a result here will solely rely on janmaat. If Norwich realise that they will very easily be able to kill any threat.

  • 29 Munster Mag // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:30 PM

    Brady and holohan v good

  • 30 toonking // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:30 PM

  • 31 toonking // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:33 PM

    my prediction 0-0 maybe 1-0

  • 32 optimistic prime // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:34 PM

    Tads

    Looks like desperation to me.
Mclaren doesn’t want to lose with the Derby coming up, Tiote isn’t the answer.

I said last week I’d be interested to see Mclarens selection today, am I allowed to say he hasn’t a clue yet?

Square pegs round holes and we’re making things hard for oureselves from the start. We played more attacking teams against Cheksea Citeh and Man U!

I suppose it’s a good idea to go a bit defencive against the attacking might of Norwich as the other 3 teams are shite.

  • 38 LGFUAD21 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:42 PM

I’m now officially worried about Schteeve. He doesn’t look like he has a plan or system. We’d have been better off persevering with one.

  • 39 toonarmydownsouth // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:42 PM

Nope, agree 8 games in, he’s still not a clue how to use the players he’s got

  • 40 ilovetoon8788 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:44 PM

Tiote must prove us wrong. It’s been like 2 years since we last saw him with a good performance. I hope he gets back to his peak.

  • 41 sparky55 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:46 PM

If you bring tiote in for whatever reason, and you had to decide between the ginger ninja and anita, I would take Anita every time…he’s got a cool head, he can pass, he’s intelligent and can spoil. Colback is just a mini me Tiote which means free kicks galore for Norwich and Gerome will dominate Colo all day and score a header from a un-necessary free kick given away from Colback or Tiote

    Just you watch!

  • 42 toon kk // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:47 PM

Repeating my prediction 3 – 1 to the Toon and a couple of Elliot blunders.

  • 44 sparky55 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:48 PM

    One Alan shearer.

Since when did Thauvin have any pace…did he find some from somewhere during the international break??

  • 45 LGFUAD21 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:49 PM

Tiote will give away a free kick in a nice position for Brady to put it away.

He isn’t the fastest runner but the pace at which he can dribble is very fast.

Shame he doesn’t look interested here. And when he does he dribbles to nowhere.

    Sparky
Pretty much what I’m expecting tbh

  • 50 willowdalerez // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:51 PM

We will win. Norwich gets about a goal a game and we have scoring threats with Mitro, Perez and Gini all playing so I expect a a pair off them. As usual it all comes down to our back 4 but I think we’ll hold them to one… They are not Chelsea or Man City and their only wins are against Sunderland and Bournemouth. HWTL!!!

  • 51 AncientC // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:51 PM

I do not rate Tiote but he is worth the gamble. Anita & Colback just isn’t working.

Colback had some good games playing with Abeid, Abeid sat very deep allowing Colback to play higher up the pitch… if that happens today I would prefer Colback over Anita. When I watch Anita he always seems to overcook his passes which puts other players into trouble.

Perhaps Anita’s stabbing motion passes worked at Ajax, but the players in our squad are not on Anita’s wavelength.

  • 57 sparky55 // Oct 18, 2015 at 3:58 PM

toonking…bang on the money mate…Tiote’s timing will be well off the pace having been out for so long and I would wager he collects a booking within the first 10 minutes.

we’re playing 4-4-2 according to SKY which means we’ll be man short in the middle and a desperate lunging tackle at some point will but us in trouble for sure

I think Tiote is done for. We need to ship him out and get a replacement for him. A proper defensive midfielder.

Widjandm I still don’t like him out wide. I think he should play just behind the striker. He has a knack of getting into the box from central areas.

  • 183 SUTTY1978 // Oct 18, 2015 at 4:56 PM

Iggy, Tiote has been much better since the yellow, has won the ball back in midfield mainly through aerial challenges. His speed of pass is something our other midfielders dont have.
Both midfielders have pirouetted and lost the ball a number of times though

  • 188 Toonfan8 // Oct 18, 2015 at 4:59 PM

For me Janmaat has very poor game, defensive he has to be a lot more agressive than he is. He has to go against player with ball, he just stand and watch…Offensively we did very good, but defensively, we need new players, at least and we also need DM, Tiote isnt good enough…we need somebody much better there, he has the power but his decisions are poor, and with ball he is very slow…we need presence there and be more aggresive at full backs positions

  • 189 Mister Tuff // Oct 18, 2015 at 4:59 PM

We are just poor all round. Our midfield does not have a balance. Tiote is poor. Colback is a player for depth. We need someone like hoolahan who is on the bench for Norwich, in our midfield.

Sissoko doesn’t track Ollson, Janmaat is do deep and doesn’t even make an effort to close the cross, Tiote and Colback don’t track the runners into the box, as a consequence Dummet get’s sucked in the middle…Redmond is free on the left, goal.

    Attitude is everything.

Just before the 4th, Sissoko tracked properly with determination, won the ball back in our RB area and went on to provide for Mitro.

Earlier in the half, he reluctantly tracked and just managed to get a foot in, halting their attack only for it to result in a corner which Wiji cleared off the line.

I repeat. Attitude is everything! Talent is nothing without it.

  • 286 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Oct 18, 2015 at 5:34 PM

Really positive victory if we hold on. I’d a feeling that the strength and movement of Perez and Mitro would have been too much for Norwich to deal with, add the combined performances of Sissoko and Gini then it’s no surprise that we put 5 goals past a Norwich side who are shockingly poor at the back.

Not a perfect victory by any means, our inability to control possession when we take the leads is mind boggling and the fact that our 4th goal came ridiculously against the run of play in the 2nd half is a stroke of good fortune. Norwich had us hemmed in for 15 minutes of the 2nd half. We are going to play much better teams – offensively and defensively – so we’d need to play even better than this going forward.

3 points are 3 points at the end of the day, and hopefully this will at least create a bit of momentum going into the Wear-Tyne derby next weekend.

  • 287 davetoon // Oct 18, 2015 at 5:34 PM

Gini, Perez, Mitrovic see my post @50. What we need is a replacement for Mitro when he is injured or off on cards… that plus defenders (hard when Gini has to double as one)!!!

I’ve said many times about sissoko, he may have a poor fame but you can’t put a price on the distance he covers with the ball, pace and power committing people and makes space for others.

Alot of his game can be improved though but only 2 players in the world are consistent every week….that’s Ronaldo and messi!!

  • 292 ilovetoon8788 // Oct 18, 2015 at 5:37 PM

Gini should be sub to get a standing ovation. So too should sissoko.

  • 293 SUTTY1978 // Oct 18, 2015 at 5:38 PM

I’m sure when Janmatt was sent off all the commentators and pundits said he had to have a second yellow as a shirt pull is a mandatory yellow. I’ve seen three by Norwich today which were far worse and no yellows, don’t get it.

  • 294 davetoon // Oct 18, 2015 at 5:39 PM

I don’t think people are asking Sissoko is a world beater every weekend (he’s not a world beater any weekend) but I think it isn’t unrealistic to demand that he plays more consistently than 1 in 10.

As for a price on the distance he covers with the ball? If someone gave me 10 million for him I’d take it. He’s simply not done enough in the nearly 3 years he’s been here.

  • 298 willowdalerez // Oct 18, 2015 at 5:42 PM

Ruddy of course you are right it is woeful but when Mitro was off we looked relegation like and with him we can trash relegation fodder teams. We can’t blame Macca if our back 4 bleed goals and now with Krul gone we need to fix that in the Jan window (should have been done in the summer) but don’t lay that at Macca’s feet he can only play the squad he has. If Macca has a say in the transfers he can be held to blame if we don’t improve after January but till then I’m happy to beat relegation teams and stay alive

The last 2 games colback has been very good, Chelsea and today, my issue with him in the past has been his chasing the ball and leaving gaps that get exploited some your stats don’t cover and never will cover. Last 2 games he’s stopped chasing the ball and every man and looks better for it. Basic stuff mate, stats never give you a full picture

Cisse had a better goal ratio than Aguero last season does that mean his a better player or better striker? No he’s not even though the stats for goals return says otherwise!! Shows you why stats shouldn’t be taken literal!!

Having a shite squad doesn’t excuse Sissoko’s woeful lack of consistency. For the record, I would get rid of all the tripe (Gouffran, Willo, Marveaux, Colo, Dummett, Obertan, Anita, Colback et al) before I’d even consider selling Sissoko but rest assured I would not be seeking to rebuild a squad around Sissoko, in fact generally speaking I consider Sissoko to fall under the “tripe” bracket more often than not.

Let’s enjoy this win for what it is – a really good 3 points against who is likely to be fellow relegation strugglers so it is important in that sense. Let’s not assume that this will springboard us to being a mid-table side. It won’t.

If we have any chance of getting ourselves back on track this is that chance, wij will be on huge confidience, perez and mitro both showing the signs of a great forward partnership and hopefully we’ve got a sissoko who’ll be giving more decent performances rather than a crap ones.

it’s not strikers or midfielders i’ll be wanting next window it’s a whole new set of defenders.

    My take on them today.

elliot- not much in the way of saves most those he did need were goals and one was blocked by wij

jam- terrible at blocking his defence, he’d be better off as a wing because he can attack very well and gets those crosses in well.

mbemba- poor match in defence but still has a chance to improve and it’s hard not to be negative when a fll back line is crap.

    colo- just one word OUT

dummett- he seemed better than hairdryer but was sometimes getting too far inside, might have been forced to do so on some occassions but it’s relying on too much midfield help.

sissoko- excellent game today. Did have a bad attitude at defensive assistance to begin with but slowly he started providing more, certainly was great with attack.

tiote- Whilst his was playing we seemed to be a team with just 1 CM hardly any signs of himselfapart from that early yellow.

colback- great work rate and had some decent tackles but could have did more assisting dummett

wij- shows everything of a player with great spirit, was always around posing a threat to norwich, MOTM

perez- great movement in the norwich half linked up well with mitco and together they both allowed wij space for the goal

    mitrco same as perez really.
