It’s A Massive Relief – And Two Players Return From Injury

4:00 pm, Wednesday, October 21st, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

It was certainly a massive relief for everybody associated with Newcastle when we managed to win our first league game of the season on Sunday at home to Norwich – after it was touch and go until halfway through the second half when Aleksandar Mitrovic brilliantly volleyed the ball home.

And of course he was brilliantly set up by Moussa Sissoko, who had three assists in the game and that was the first time since 1994 that a Newcastle player has had three assists in a game.

And it was not unlike Kevin Keegan’s team used to play in the 1990s with great attacking flair, some great goals – and yes – some weak defending too.

The lads are back in training today getting ready for the vital game on Sunday against Sunderland and Paul has said they will prepare like the way they did over the International break and make sure every player knows what their job is in all parts of the pitch.

This is some of what Paul has said on nufcTV today:

“Sunday was a relief for everybody.” “When I say everybody I am going to be selfish and say us as staff, then the players but also, massively, the supporters as well.”

“They’ve turned up in numbers week in, week out and made some incredible journeys from the North East and not got the rewards.” “It was wonderful to see them enjoying it on Sunday.”

“We have all come back into work to start preparing for the next one, which we all know is a big one.” “It’s a local derby.” “But as far as we’re concerned it’s the next one that we want to get three points out of.”

When we watched the latest edition of Magpies 24/7 from last week we saw Kevin Mbabu looked to be doing OK in training.

The good news from Paul Simpson today is that 20 year-old Kevin Mbabu and 19 year-old Rolando Aaron are both in full training this week and will get a full week’s training in before Sunday.

We’d like to see Kevin start at left back but we think McClaren will play Geordie boy Paul Dummett at the start of the derby game.

There are Sadio Haidara, Paul Dummett and Kevin Mbabu all fighting for that left back spot at Newcastle now.

It’s good that competition for places is starting to heat up at Newcastle – that’s always a good thing.

I would think Mbabu, when fit, will be fighting for a game at RB rather than competing with Dummy & Saido for LB. I don’t think Aarons will get a game whilst everyone is fit and we’re playing 442

Nice to have some healthy bodies available.

It would be even nicer if NUFC dropped out of the lead in the injured players table.

Hope Aarons and Mbabu make the squad, still think these two could be a terrific partnership on the left.

It is a totally different game on sunday than v Norwich, but if we show no fear and have a real go we can put the Mackems on the back foot asap, and with total football, ie Sissoko goes charging forward, someone fills straight in to the space he has left, we can be covered, Mclaren win this derby and you can get a lot of folk back on side to say the least!including the beefman!

If we stick with the tactics/formation we had at Norwich there’s no place for Aarons in the starting line-up. Personally I’d be going with the same team that started last Sunday, hoping Tiote isn’t so rusty and has trained well. I’m looking forward to seeing Sissoko against Van Aanholt, he looks a liability defensively although he’s very quick going forward. Our best bet will be quick counter attacks O’Shea has great positioning but lacks the pace that we have going forward

    Aarons impact sub off bench.

Mbabu gives janmaat some competition. I would still like to see janmaat tried right midfield with mbabu right back, then sissoko, colback, wijnaldum across the midfield.

Hear riviere is nearly back he might actually offer more under McLaren, Marveaux must be ready now so I’m assuming he’s not deemed good enough.

I don’t wwant tiote anywhere near the starting line up tbh not only because he was shocking last week but he’ll be targeted from the 1st minute by not only clattermole but mvilla too.
Oshea will be tasked with winding miti up as well I just hope he doesn’t fall into it, ya rite about van anholt the games I’ve seen he’s left massive holes down that side constantly should give sisko plenty of chances
also on miti anyone played the new fifa? His aggression stats are in the low 60’s!! I think that stat man might have been sacked by now

French media can b crazy not part of his corr players wen he was on the bench. I think he is the first players to come on when we want to change things.

  • 8 will die for the toon army // Oct 21, 2015 at 5:25 PM

    The bench will b:
Woodman, Lasceles, Anita, De Jong, Aarons, Thauvin, Cisse.

That is a strong bench though so below par compared to the ones that r starting.

Elliott, Janmmatt, Dummett, Mbemba, Colo, Sissoko, Tiote, Colback, Wijnaldum, Perez, Mitrovic.

  • 9 barkel // Oct 21, 2015 at 5:31 PM

I think Tiote is needed because of their midfield, Anita is just too small for this game. I’d have Anita over Tiote in most other games, on current form but I think we need Tiotes strength. I think Mitro will be more than capable with O’Shea.

The only thing about the bench that I would be concerned about is Woodman and Lascellas but that’s mostly because I haven’t seen either of them really play too often

LB must be Haidara or Mbabu(I think this lad can play RB too. he show us some very good through pass when he’s on the pitch). Dummett should be on CB rotation with Colo.

  • 11 Ravostag // Oct 21, 2015 at 6:44 PM

Dont let Tiote near the pitch on saturday he is a complete liability with his 360 degree turns and dwelling on the ball not even mentioning his late tackles

Didnt Thavin get 3 assists against northampton??

  • 13 TroubledToon // Oct 21, 2015 at 8:48 PM

Here’s a thought… Play Dummett at CB.. Colo as DM.. N anyway, since he luvs running after a ball rather than marking his man, it’d be more suited to his current skill set.
The only issue is: do we take such a risk in a game vs Scum?

  • 14 beefman13 // Oct 21, 2015 at 9:15 PM

Troubled toon, ive always thought Colo would be a v good defensive midfielder, Dummett and Mbemba centre halfs, sacrifice either colback or Anita for Colo, freshen it up, Mbabu left back and Janmatt right back. to many teams i think are now targeting Colo as a weak link.

  • 15 AlfiePotter // Oct 21, 2015 at 9:30 PM

Any variation of back 4 that dosnt include colo is good for me

I think Mbabu is a right back by trade … could move DJ or PD insidw until we invest in Jan
