These Two Make All The Difference At Newcastle

Whenever Newcastle lose it seems that Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has a go at Newcastle and  when we play well he´s all praise for the Magpies – we suppose that´s the businmess he´s in now.

And so it was with Jamie after our terrific 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon at home to Norwich and Jamie probably pinpoints exactly what has made the difference at Newcastle over the last three games when we have picked up 4 points and scored 9 goals.

That´s the move to a 4-4-2 and having Aleksandar Mitrovic partnered with Ayoze Perez up front and they have made Newcastle into a side that can threaten in the last third of the field.

It also helps to have a certain Gini Wijnaldum starting to hit top form with Newcastle and he’s scored 5 goals in the last three games.

So two thirds of our points (4) have come in the last one third of our nine games – and we have looked a decent side, although in the second half at Manchester City we collapsed and in the three games we have conceded 10 goals.

This is what Jamie Carragher said on Monday Night Football about Newcastle:

“Aleksandar Mitrovic’s goal was a great finish and since himself and Ayoze Perez have become a partnership up there, they have looked like a different side.”

“Moussa Sissoko was outstanding and Georginio Wijnaldum looks a player. It wasn’t just the four goals, it was his all-round play.”

“Now Norwich played into Newcastle’s hands but they could argue ‘We scored two goals, we hit the woodwork twice’ so they were obviously let down at the other end.”

“There was a naivety to Norwich, the manager himself said it with taking Alex Tettey off.”

What has still let Newcastle down in the last three games is our defense and conceding ten goals is testament to that – but if we are to beat Sunderland on Sunday afternoon we will need to tighten up significantly  in defense.

If we can do that and counter attack like we did on Sunday we should be in decent shape.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Both are young players and are still improving as footballers. Also, Mitrovic only has a few EPL games under his belt, and when you take that into consideration, the guy has done extremely well during his short spell here when he has played. I’ll give him a pass for the early bookings and the sending off in the beginning 🙂

Here is a great piece on Mitrovic, btw:

I watched highlights of the 5 0 against Man U last night. We think we have a decent front 4 now but then we had Shearer, Ferdinand, Beardsley & Ginola, just wow and Tino was on the bench 🙂

Right now , I believe this could be the best season ever , and not because what is going on on Tyneside , I believe the guys down the road In red and white are in serious trouble, but what makes me think it’s going to be a good season is fat sham will take them down, he may have done better if he had a big CF at the club , but they have Defoe , sham doesn’t know how to use small players.

Sunderland are a poor squad, no doubt about it. Villa will sack Timothy and probably go for Moyes , big mistake , both are poor managers.

    Relegated ,
    Aston villa
    Bournemouth .

Maybe Wanyama and Shelvey are out of our reach, but surely Granit Xhaka isn’t, 21/22 years of age, club captain, excellent physical and passing ability, the guy could have a huge sell on value in the future

It wasn’t a front 4 , it was a front 6 , rob Lee and Gillespie also played huge parts in us going forward
