Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has just named his team for the Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light this afternoon and as expected it’s unchanged from the side that won 6-2 against Norwich City last Sunday.
Newcastle will continue to play in a 4-4-2 formation this afternoon.
Teams:
Sunderland: (4-2-3-1): Costel Pantilimon; DeAndre Yedlin, Younes Kaboul, John O’Shea, Billy Jones; Lee Cattermole, Yann M’Vila; Adam Johnson, Ola Toivonen, Jeremain Lens; Steven Fletcher
Substitutes: Vito Mannone, Patrick van Aanholt, Sebastian Coates, Sebastian Larsson, Jordi Gomez, Duncan Watmore, Jermain Defoe
Newcastle (4-4-2): Rob Elliot; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Paul Dummett; Moussa Sissoko, Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback, Georginio Wijnaldum; Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Massadio Haidara, Jamaal Lascelles, Vurnon Anita, Siem de Jong, Florian Thauvin, Papiss Cisse
Referee: Robert Madley (West Yorkshire)
Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez will again be up front and let’s hope those two – plus Gini Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko – play as well as they did last time out.
Bit it’s our defense that is vulnerable – as it has been for the last three seasons – and we have to hope they are a lot better than against Norwich City.
This is what Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren said about this game last this week:
“It’s good to see Sam again and good to see him back in the game so quickly,”
“Sam is an experienced manager who does a very good job at every club he goes to but I’m hoping it will take him at least a few weeks to find his feet at Sunderland.”
“He will come in and feels he’s got a fresh start at Sunderland, but we are just focusing on what we can do and not worrying about the opponent or the manager.”
“Whoever the manager is, it’s the Premier League, it’s the biggest league in the world and each game is massively important.”
“We don’t know anything about the previous five games and neither do half the players,”
“We’re here to break history and tradition and we’re here to prepare and win the next game and that’s what we’ll be doing.”
“I don’t think there are any favourites in this game. It’s a derby game so form goes out of the window – it’s a cliché but it’s true.”
“It’s going to be difficult but we know their players very well and whatever the system and whatever their style of play, we know it’s going to be tough.”
“The main message we have for the players is to focus on their performance and doing their jobs properly.”
“Our message to the fans is that we’re focused on winning this game for them. What we want to do is focus on getting the result we want.”
“If we do that I’ll be absolutely delighted – not just for our players but especially for the fans.”
We really need to win this game this afternoon.

Comment #483@Lilongwe that is incorrect – a foul in the box is a penalty BUT that foul must be denying a CLEAR goal scoring opportunity to get a red. Hence why so many fouls in the box these days are given yellows.

Comment #484Couldn’t pick a ‘bad’ performer today. Nobody excelled for us, but none were terrible.

positives are the team looked good up until the sending off, and still looked good for 10 men after.
If we play like that every week we’ll be mid table.
negatives collo, and thauvin. suppose thauvin is rusty but as a winger he is lacking.
next game and play the same with no silly mistakes and we’ll do well.

Comment #487Fletcher would never do that to Colo in that scenario though would he? He was entirely focused on reaching the ball before the keeper, which I have to say I think he would have got a toe to knock it past as Elliot is a slouch and they seemed to be meeting it at roughly the same time. Fletcher was chasing the ball, Colo realised he was a yard behind due to his lack of pace and decided to run in to Fletcher full force and take him out, there was never a shoulder to shoulder encounter, one was chasing the ball, the other only had eyes for the man as he knew he’d been done for pace and lost the ideal position of being between GK and attacker. An act of desperation, poor judgement of the scenario, poorer judgement of which action to take.
All sorts could’ve happened if he didn’t do that, Fletcher leave a foot in – disallowed goal.
Mbemba on the recovery clears the ball off the line.
Colo use a little less force and just knock Fletcher off balance instead of the blatant intention to knock him off his feet might have sufficed.
Heck, Elliot might have got there first regardless, but we’ll never know, because Colo did a blatant foul and the ref deemed Fletcher to be the favourite to get there first in a tight race, thus a goalscoring opportunity.

Comment #490Step up Mbemba, you’re in charge of the back 4 now. And who knows, hopefully this next few games will be the making of Lascelles. I hope this doesn’t mean a promotion for Willo though, That would be SM playing what he probably sees as a safe bet.

Comment #491thauvin for there 3rd was shocking he was the person who lost it and the fittest player left on the pitch and then gave up chasing back on the half way line i regret saying he was looking good lol

That was a goalscoring opportunity. He didn’t have control, but a definite opportunity for a shot, and subsequently a goal.

Comment #494It’s always been known as a shoulder charge, that’s what Collo done, a shoulder charge…have they changed the rules? If not then it wasn’t a foul.

Comment #495We looked really good for 44 mins then, you know what, but I mentioned before if you concede 3 goals from 3 shots on goal weather u have ten or not, there is still a massive problem, Mbabu straight in at left back Dummett n mbemba centre half’s, Aarons straight in the team, Tiote shipped back to the ivory coast, super loon that he is. Thauvin sent to boot camp for a toughening up, he’s a white flag on a white background type of fella, yuk.
None of the above I’ve mentioned will happen next week but it’s my opinion.

Comment #497Agreed Elliot chickened out of diving for the ball, forcing Colos hand a bit. If they were both barging for the byline, the ref wouldn’t have been bothered. But Colo should have been wiser, and gone to ground when Fletcher started pushing back. Idiot. We could still have won from one down with eleven on the pitch.

Comment #498lilo it certainly wasn’t a clear goal scoring opportunity especially from where the ref was
lacelles did exactly the same on defoe on the touchline not a foul why is that then if its in the rules?

Comment #499This season could be the most difficult season yet for those battling relegation, looking at the table itself you’ve got ourselves, scums, villa, norwich and bornmoth after that it’s chelsea, stoke watford and liverpool. Watford should be joining up but already 17th place needs 2 wins+1 draw, the other 3 i’d say are certain to suvive.

I don’t think either were a foul. As I stated, but if the ref thinks what Colo did was a foul, it is a red.
I don’t think a shoulder is a red. Ever. People who like to bash Colo are jumping on a bandwagon without substance.
For me, not a foul, just stronger and prior to thathe had been comfortable against their attack
