Newcastle January Transfers Are Already Starting

4:33 pm, Monday, October 26th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 86 Comments

Remy Cabella played his 11th game for Marseille yesterday as the south of France club won 2-1 at Lille and Cabella had a good game and one more appearance will see his transfer to the French club become permanent in January.

The win put Marseilles up to 14th place with 12 points from 11 games and it’s been a difficult start for Marseille after losing many of their best players last summer.

remy cabella marseille

Remy Cabella at Marseille

Remy started the game and put in a good performance as he begins to settle in at Marseille and it is now certain he will sign for them on a permanent basis.

Remy was sent out on loan initially in part exchange for Florina Thauvin and it looks like we will get £6M for Remy so that’s about half of the £12M fee we paid Marseille for Thauvin.

Unfortunately so far this season Thauvin is having the exact same problems that Cabella had last on and is finding it difficult to settle in on Tyneside and produce his best form.

We’re still not sure why we brought in Florian who seems a very similar player to Cabella who had just failed to make the grade in England.

Steve McClaren said it was because of his crossing ability.

We just have to hope that Florian comes through this season – and there’s still time.

In January we must bring in some defenders since we have already conceded 22 goals in our first 10 league games and if that average continues it would be 84 goals conceded over the full 38 game season.

If we do concede 84 goals it will be a certainty we will also be relegated to the Championship.

In the last three seasons we have conceded a total of 190 goals for an average of about 63 goals per season.

It’s not rocket science to work out that our defense is the big weakness.

Comments welcome.

Our defence has been the weak link for 8 years…..
Still its a five year plan..

    True Geordie on the match

  • 3 toon kk // Oct 26, 2015 at 4:45 PM

We didn’t deserve to lose but I’m not sure if we could have won with eleven men it just wasn’t our day.

I think we did deserve to lose the game. Too much is made of possession stats and shots.

We had about as many clear cut chances as they did but they converted theirs and we didn’t convert ours, just ourselves to blame really.

Also the red card was debatable but can fully see why a ref would give it, it was poor from coloccini to give the ref the opportunity to make the decision.

    Transfer Sage

    That’s embarrassing!

Not much thought gone into your comment.

They didn’t have one scoring opportunity until we were down to 10 men !!!!

  • 6 Roosta // Oct 26, 2015 at 4:55 PM

Cattermolee was their one man wrecking ball yesterday, dun Colback, haddy serious pops at a few others as well, got away big style with it, a pure nasty piece of work, that said apart from Tiote we have no bugga that puts the frighteners on anyone.

  • 7 toon kk // Oct 26, 2015 at 4:58 PM

I agree with we had as many if not more chances to win the game, but a lot of our shots on target were half hearted an should have been in the back of the net.
We certainly bossed the first half but we often do.

  • 8 Transfer Sage // Oct 26, 2015 at 4:59 PM

That’s irrelevant…..we gave a silly foul which resulted in a pen and a red card. It was a mistake by Colo, I thought it was a foul and can see why the ref sent him off, although I don’t think he should as I think Elliot might be getting there, enough doubt to say not clear goal scoring opportunity.

We wasted all of our chances, there were no out of this world saves to stop us. We also wasted possession in good areas often.

I see what your saying, but ultimately if we never made mistakes we wouldn’t have given them the opportunity.

“It’s not rocket science to work out that our defense is the big weakness”

So maybe now you’ll start to question the Fatman and his intentions for this club ? We’ve staggered through seasons knowing we’re shlte at the back yet nothing is done ?

Only when there was a real chance we’d go down at the end of last season did Fatman bother his R’s to pretend he was concerned.

  • 10 the broons // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:01 PM

if our only recruitments in the january window are defenders i will be happy as larry.

People shouldnt be concerned with our inability to convert chances yesterday. Need to realise the gods were against us, against norwich we had 6 on target and 6 goals.

DEFFO a new centre back, and a left back and potentially a new keeper <(maybe nor, depending on krul situation)

  • 11 Transfer Sage // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:01 PM

    toon kk

    I agree.

As I say though, no opposition will stick the ball in the net for you. If we didn’t take our chances and be clinical it’s our own fault entirely.

They had chances as Colo was sloppy for the first one, the marking was dire for the second to allow a lad to volley in the box from a corner and the third was due to us pushing high up and being caught…..a common part of football.

  • 12 Mister Tuff // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:03 PM

Wonder what is happening about the Fans Forum minutes. They are usually published in 2 -3 days after the meeting.
Might be having trouble getting them agreed.
I wonder exactly what the process is – clearly they are prepared by the club – but what happens then to get them agreed. .Are they sent out to all the FF members for checking, or someone designated from the group,

  • 13 the broons // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:04 PM

I can’t help but feel that the reason we only sign midfielders and forwards is because they have more resale value. If mitro got 15 goals this season all of a sudden he becomes a 20 million+ striker.

If Mbemba keeps 15 clean sheets this season <(much harder to do) doubt he will then be worth 20 million.

  • 14 Transfer Sage // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:05 PM

No idea why we didn’t go for more quality at the back.

For me get rid of haidara and buy a replacement, unless dummett really kicks on.

We need to get shot of collo, willo and saylor as either not good enough or not fit, then buy 2 quality players in that position, very difficult task, look at the money the top clubs spend on CBs and often get rubbish.

We need a quality holding midfielder too if tiote can’t get back to his best.

  • 15 optimistic prime // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:06 PM

I’ve been awaiting news on the training ground and am assuming it will have been mentioned at the FF.

  • 16 toon kk // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:07 PM

To be fair, it was two poor sides playing each other, we are stronger going forward than Sunderland but our defence is diabolical, and we lack cutting edge in front of goal.

  • 20 Laurent Robert 32 // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:17 PM

I think once Siem gets up and running he can provide some some intelligent passes in the final third, and has good shot accuracy to get some goals from all ranges. Just has to stay fit for us first. He had a decent appearance rate at Ajax. I like him, although he’d need pace around him. Like Gini, he’s another former captain. I think he’d very much suit the style of play which is developing in the side.

I’d try and get him in the team at the weekend,

  • 23 Transfer Sage // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:20 PM

It’s simple to me….if you don’t take your chances you can’t be annoyed that you don’t win, certainly can’t claim you deserve to win.

We are always at the heart of our own downfall every time. We have quality but no consistency and we are full of individual errors.

  • 24 sparky55 // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:20 PM

A quick question for all you stat merchants out there.

We’ve had pretty much the worst defence in the premiership with regards to goals shipped since we got back into the premiership…so the question is….Whose been the main constant at the heart of our defence during that period and is there another premiership team that has survived in the premiership during that same period of time with a worse goals conceded record than us.

…and one more question….what’s the average number of goals shipped per game where Captain Colo has played?

just trying to get my head where the problem might be!

  • 25 Jail for Ashley // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:24 PM

I see the pinacle of footballing knowledge Jib, the guy who thought Pardew got us promoted says we can’t accuse Collo of stupidity for that tackle, every journo and football pundit does but Jib says we can’t !

Not sure about colos red card being taken back since madley has been given a prem game to ref this week. Looks like there going to back him

  • 27 GeordieTwo // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:27 PM

It’s difficult to be supportive of a manager who has a 10% winning percentage after a quarter of the season. This isn’t going to work with the defense he has at his disposal. He’s in deep now with nowhere to hide. Ashley has made it impossible to field a decent side with his insane transfer policy made up of 90% young, inexperienced players only 1 of whom is a CB. We need 3 good CB’s at least in the squad and we have one, Mbemba. There is no excuse for that happening at this stage of Ashley’s ownership.

  • 29 GeordieTwo // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:30 PM

There should be a lot of red faces at the club over the Thauvin deal and the Colo contract extension. Complete blunders. The defense is inexcusable. Ashley has had years to put it right and has completely ignored the problems, as have his lackeys.

  • 30 GeordieTwo // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:32 PM

Let’s also look at Lee Charnley. A complete failure in his role. The club is in 19th place for many reasons but he is clearly one of them.

  • 31 Jail for Ashley // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:32 PM

I’ve asked the same question before, I don’t think there is another defender in the PL with a worse GD than Collo, in fact I know there isn’t, any other defenders with similar records have been relegated or sold.

  • 32 Transfer Sage // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:33 PM

See where I was coming from though?

  • 33 Transfer Sage // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:38 PM

The challenge for McClaren is to now try and repeat the Norwich game.

We need to really take the game to the opponents and outscore them, until January at least when we can strengthen at the back, we have to buy.

Until then we need to get as many points as possible by making sure we can score 2/3 a game and hoping to keep the opposition under that.

  • 34 sparky55 // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:44 PM

For me the challenge is to shore up the defence and the rest will come because there’s no doubt in my mind with 11 men on the pitch we’ve got regular goals in our team that will consistently come from a pool of 5 players…and that’s a good stat from any team in the premiership.

  • 35 TroubledToon // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:45 PM

From what I’ve seen so far, I’d say let’s re-exchange Cabella n Thauvin!!! Atleast he cud lose the first man on him 1 outta 10 times!!!
Thauvin on the other hand… Probably the worst signing I’ve seen in the last 20 years!!!!!

  • 36 sparky55 // Oct 26, 2015 at 5:46 PM

So why can’t SM see it then??? WTF has happened that makes him so indispensable in the face of such a poor record…it’s mind-blowing

op – the club were lightening quick publishing the plans of their new futuristic training facilities. I presume they have planning permission.
However there hasn’t even been an update from the club about the current position one way or another. They seem nor to be so quick in updating the fans now – probably Mr Tubbs is using the money for players.

Mixed feelings about Remi Garde going to Villa, would like to see him to well to show those ambitionless tw@ts that are ru(?)nning our club but on the other hand I’d love to see Villa out on their arses and if they start doing well that’s another nail in our coffin.

  • 41 toon kk // Oct 26, 2015 at 6:28 PM

Been watching replays of our shots on target yesterday, and there was very little real intent or power in our shots.
personally although we went down to ten men the second half was same old, same old! Our heads go down and the defence falls to bits.

French Pundit on the radio earlier said Garde was offered Newcastle job in january but only on a short term deal with no assurances beyond end of the season…
He also said (regarding villa) that Garde isn’t a man you want in a relegation dog fight and that Villa would be making a mistake in the appointment. Recommended they look at Nigel Pearson

Been a long time since I last posted but out of the woodwork for a bit.

Shameful our situation. The heart of the club is gone. The passion and soul has been ripped out of us and it isn’t just Derby matches. The entire calendar year has been a complete write off. So many on here saying we can take heart from being the better side for much of the match…..but we lost. I would so much rather win ugly than lose in style. That might be different if we won at all but we don’t….Norwich aside…..and that match could so easily have been a six six saw off.

As for Collo….I cant see a committee second guessing a referee’s decision made on the pitch unless it was patently wrong. Here the decision is a subjective one….Madley made it….and whether his subjectively rendered opinion is right or wrong is not for a committee to review. If he was wrong on the law itself then fine….overturn….but he wasn’t. He applied the law correctly although he surely could have made any number of interpretations.

@Scott: But that’s the thing, few are arguing about the penalty, they’re arguing about the red card. All the club have to do is prove that it was outside of Fletcher’s control (it was) and that Elliot was to win the ball (he was).

  • 57 Munster Mag // Oct 26, 2015 at 7:12 PM

As I said at the time, I think the ref got it right. He barged Fletcher off it. If he was quicker, he could have eased him off, but he’s slow. It wasnt a red card though, so we might get away with it. Unlikely though, as the committee men will back each other up.

Interesting analysis by Keys, Gray and that ex-ref, slow motion, analysing the runs, who made contact first, etc. Ex-ref said such an inexperienced ref should not be refereeing that game… All 3 would not have given the pen, but they understand why it was not given. All 3 said we have a case re the red.

Point is, it was a soft pen, like they said, NO ONE would’ve complained had it not been given.

Man ref, it was a derby, you could’ve red carded, say, O’Shea from the very first minute for upending Mitro from behind (not that you should’ve of course)… not to name that Clutter guy.

Shame, because this had 0-3 written all over it.

They may be similar in style and both rather lightweight for the Prem but imho, Thauvin is actually worse than Cabella. Its enough to almost feel sorry for Mashley. But I don’t.

  • 85 asl123 // Oct 27, 2015 at 1:55 AM

It was a joy to watch Cabella playing. So it was with Ben Arfa who can win the games in his own. Also Thauvin who can open up the play (prefer him than Sissoko). And I call it is beautiful football rather than playing American football that we are doing now, dull.

If given the chance, I would take back Cabella and put him as AM just like David Silva of MC. Then I can imagine how they will menacing opp defenders and great 1 2 passing.

Sissoko and Colback steady the ship at mid park, meanwhile cabella orchestrate the attack with his mazing run and killer passes. Just my 10cents
