McClaren Upbeat – We Are Now Dominating Opponents

7:30 pm, Saturday, October 31st, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 14 Comments

The difference in the teams today was Jack Butland who made four fantastic saves to keep Newcastle out and earn Stoke City a 0-0 draw at St. James’ Park this afternoon.

But Newcastle picked up a couple of injuries with Daryl Janmaat having to be substituted after 83 minutes by Jamaal Lascelles, after the Dutchman picked up a leg injury, and then Rob Elliot seems to have injured his thigh again as he limped off the pitch at the end of the game.

Rom made two very good saves today, but that leaves only 18 year-old Freddie Shepherd as the only fit goalkeeper we have.

Jack Butland saves from Ayoze Perez in second half

This is what Steve McClaren said after the game:

“Goalkeepers are there to win you points and that’s what Jack Butland does.” “He did it for us a few times at Derby last year – I remember very well – and he’s done it again for Stoke today.”

“I have seen him in other games.” “You need a top-class goalkeeper to get you points and Stoke have got one, and certainly England have.”

“The key thing is, we look capable of winning games now. The first four, we didn’t create any chances; now we are.” “We are playing good football, dominating opponents – the clean sheet was important.”

“And in the cold light of day, anybody looking at that can see we are on the right lines.”

“We are certainly looking at the Elliot situation and seeing what we can do, because that’s three of our senior goalkeepers injured.”

We really needed a win today to climb out of the bottom three,  but we are now 3rd bottom with 7 points from 11 games – one point above Sunderland and 3 points above Aston Villa who both play tomorrow.

Our next game is at Bournemouth next Saturday with a  12:45 pm kick-off.

So at the Refs meeting before this weekend the instruction was something along the lines of” we got it all very wrong last week and give too many cards that spoil games and wrongly influence results ” so this week let’s not wrongly influence the outcome of games by awarding fouls and giving out cards” and the outcome is they failed to take the right decisions and award yellow cards when they should have done. Lucas should have had two and been sent off at Chelsea and Stoke players got away predictably with cheap shots, shirt pulling and complaining to the ref.
The inconsistency and incompetence of refs and lack of contribution from linesmen is ruining games. Just wonder what the FA edict will be for next week.

“McClaren – We Are Now Dominating Opponents”
Proof, if ever it was needed that McWally has brains of sawdust.

BTW Freddie wont let this club down, he’s the best keeper at the club right now !

For those optimists who think our improved style of play will pay dividends just look at the arithmetic. We need to transform our results and play like a top ten team till May as we need to average 6ts from every 5 games to get to 40 pts by the end of the season. That’s either two wins and three losses so win almost every other game or defensively even better one win , three draws and just one loss every 5 games.

9pts from the next three games will take the pressure off and leave us an average of a point a game til the end of the season.

Optimists need to understand arithmetic. Yes we can do it but we’ll need a points score that is equivalent to our 10th place finish or better.
Dominating opponents only works when you get the points as well. The Toon book of heroic failures is a thick volume, the last thing we need is another chapter

Man what a pleasure it is again watching my team play. We owned Stoke, were unlucky to draw. All the lines were working perfectly and we attacked in waves. Not conceding was a bonus and we had chances – plenty of them.

We’ve got to prepare ourselves for life in the championship, its been coming for a while now. Hate to say it but we are in the bottom three because that’s where we belong.
Come January we’ll be so far behind we may have to cut our losses and look for signings ready for championship football.
Tbh I think we have to take a step back and restart.

The difference of opinion on this game is startling.

I saw a team in black and white dominate from the start, look organised, be full of energy and create multiple chances.

It was great goalkeeping how we didn’t win that game. All the signs are there that we are massively improving.

Its all starting to come together. A few new signings in jan and we’ll be flying.

    Everyone played well today.

Our fans, ‘We’re in the bottom 3 because that’s where we belong’.
‘Doesn’t matter how we play, table matters the most’.
    ‘We’re Championship level’.
These are the people who wanted change & it’s finally starting to happen.
We dominated Stoke today, just got stopped by Butland.
    But you always want more.
Just winds me up how fans can be so thick.
Start of the season, it was bad, but the last few games, you can clearly see that Mclaren has changed us, and with a little bit more time, and a few signings, it’ll all come together properly.
Stoke had one chance today & their keeper was MOTM, but you still find flaws because we didn’t win.
To be honest, it makes me angry, really really angry that people find negatives from game where there wasn’t one!

YOU FANS NEED TO SHUT YOUR MOUTH. OH HOW FUNNY IT WILL BE WHEN WE FINISH COMFORTABLY MID TABLE, BUT OH NO. THEM SAME FANS WILL MOAN BECAUSE WE DIDN’T GET TOP 6.
WE COULD WIN THE LEAGUE, BUT OH NO WE DIDN’T REACH 100 POINTS.
YOU’RE DELUDED FANS WHO ALWAYS EXPECT MORE.

YOU WANTED CHANGE, AFTER A SHAKY START, EVEN A BLIND AN CAN SEE HOW BETTER WE ARE NOW, BUT NOPE.
    THAT ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH.
SHUT YOUR MOUTHS YOU THICKLE BUNCH IF FANS AND START GIVING SOME PRAISE TO THE TEAM INSTEAD OF PULLING THEM APART WHEN THEY’RE MAKING THE CHANGES THAT YOU WANTED TO SEE.

  • 13 goommy // Oct 31, 2015 at 10:39 PM

Actually, I really like our playing style now. We seem to improve in everygame we pass. So top 10 will be satisfy for me.
