Newcastle Just Didn’t Have The Luck

6:01 pm, Saturday, October 31st, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 37 Comments

This is a game against a very decent Stoke City side that we should have won – just one goal would have done it – but Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland produced a string of brilliant saves and he looked unbeatable especially in that second half and he frustrated the Newcastle players.

Jamaal Lascelles had come on after 83 minutes for the injured Daryl Janmaat and was almost the Newcastle hero as he powered a header goalwards from an Ayoze Perez free kick after 87 minutes,  but Butland produced the best save of the match to keep the ball out – otherwise we would be celebrating our second league win of the season.

aleksandar mitroivc hits the posy with this header

Mitrovic hit the post with this great header from a Sissoko cross

There were good performances all over the pitch today from Newcastle and certainly the concentration and determination was there  – it’s just unlucky we could not get a goal and the win.

But these things tend to level themselves out over the season, so maybe in another game we will be holding on and then  get an own goal to win it in stoppage time.

This was also our first clean sheet since August at Old Trafford.

Seem to be playing bettter?? lol

and on the keeper, under P45, it would have taken us 3 matches to have that many chances in a game, we have 4 players getting in the box as often as they can , pulling defenders all over, and this is still new to them,

that last chance was a great header, and if the keeper had not have got to it, it would not have been his fault, the defenders did not pick up him

No its not the end of the world. Before anybody starts there relegation nonsense!

  • 3 Llort muw // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:05 PM

‘823’ minute?? Damn, we play that well that time just flies.

  • 4 manxpie // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:05 PM

catchy thats wat 50 mill buys ya but theres a hell of along way to go yet

you were one of the ones saying we had a great squad under pardew!

come on, give your head a shake man, P45 could have played HBA, Yanga, but he didnt, Jonas went from an attacking winger to a Crap DMC. P45 did more harm to good players than any other good manager out there,

    Well another chance gone begging.

Wijnaldum is the difference to that team from last year. He is the difference for me not a massive change in football at this point in time like some seem to think. His pace and energy is exactly what we have been missing I think. He is a top player and has fitted in well with Sissoko and Perez great, they bounce and thrive off him well going forward, some nice link up play between them all. Crosses going into the box.

If we lose Wijnaldum we will go straight back to square one I think. He is the player who is making things happen with them all I reckon.

Amazing what a few signings can do, and how much it can affect moral and spirit for other players also.

They need to do the best they can up until January and then bolster the squad further with proven quality, hopefully with players who can hit the ground running from this league.

I really think if we lose Gini it would be a disaster. This is exactly what was expected of De Jong last season but he barely kicked a ball.

Don’t get me wrong, very good saves by Butland but still think the one from Lascelles was a save which should be made by a top level prem keeper.

The good thing I’m seeing is more bodies in the box, as you say. It makes a massive difference as it gives you more targets for crosses and more of a chance from saves/rebounds.

Things are improving, we just need them to improve faster. Things do take time of course, but we still need more.

I’m not a huge McClaren fan but again he wasn’t backed enough in the summer. He needed a top quality CB buying and he never got it.

  • 8 Blackley and Brownlie // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:10 PM

Another hard luck story, eh Ed? What happened to making our own luck? Stoke were there for the taking. Desperately needing three points, we play two defensive midfielders at home to a poor team. Because we get a draw, Jib is encouraged enough to opine that the defence is fine. I’m still waiting to see Jib’s profound and fundamental changes translating into results. What are those profound and fundamental changes Jib? You never answered.

Llort muw – where abouts in Lancs are you? Anywhere near Preston / Leyland area?

  • 10 Transfer Sage // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:12 PM

I’ve always liked Perez, think he is a talent. The way he turns past players with subtle movements at times and then other times with a huge change of direction remind me of suarez and coutinho.

The one thing he really needs to get better at is his shooting, too many powder puff shots with no venom. When that improves he will be so much more dangerous.

    He has a bright future.

lets put this way, if i could chose between the 2 sqauds, i think that P45s squad 13/14 season and this one, i think P45s was the better squad.

listen, this is a fact, nobody forced P45 to stay, if he thought he was being hard done to , he new where the door was he could have walked much earlier, he stayed for the money only.

he walked in the end and is worshiped up and down the country

  • 12 Transfer Sage // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:13 PM

I agree. There are some changes….more bodies forward/in the box but we still lack genuinely quality in the final third and struggle to make clear cut chances and also to take the ones we have.

Like you say, unless things rapidly improve we will be another 10 draws/losses down the line and really need a strong final half of the season to get away from the drop.

  • 13 firebug666 // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:14 PM

    See Elliot is now injured

  • 14 toonking // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:15 PM

HBA is a player who caused just as much trouble as he provided usefully if you like him so much why don’t you like pardew they both were the same in temrs of form ,HBA had 1 good game then a bad game, pardew had good run then a poor run.

mbiwa himself didn’t seem to like playing in the PL and overall problem was him and colo together is we’d have no power.

Jonas himself was for the majority of his time a player who most wouldn’t have, that only began to change following his cancer problems, pardew had dropp goofy when he could and used arrons.

You did earlier say chelsea have now conceded 22 goals so you still think they will get top 4?

  • 15 colwell // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:15 PM

As good as Wijnaldum has been I still think Mbemba has been our best signing. His pace as got us out of so much trouble and he always seems to win every tackle he goes for.

  • 16 Roosta // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:17 PM

Here we are scrapping the bottom of the league, another three points have escaped us, Mclaren has plenty of excuses as 7sual, ie their goalie our own bad luck yadda yadda yadda, MA said we were making our own luck from now on in May, we havnt had a sniff since really, the Prem league shows were we deserve to be, over to you for the hard luck stories Steve.

  • 17 manxpie // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:17 PM

haha please tell me how catchy that that sqad was better
by he way you said it constantly under pardew

the squad has been terrible under ashleys reign full stop!

  • 18 catchy in norway // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:18 PM

    Transfer Sage

im not sure how fast you want it to be, i think he has done what he has done in record time, to go from no style of play with no confidence, to a team with a plan playing for 90 mins and actually creating much more than we ever did.

under P45/charver we were always waiting for one player to do something himself, we had no free kick routines , poor corners,

players like perez should have been playing under P45, but some how i think even this season Gouffy would be ahead of him, yet for me he has been a revelation

  • 19 manxpie // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:20 PM

infact as soon as pardew left how many posters commented on how shite this player is or that player and how we needed this and that lol

  • 20 manxpie // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:23 PM

catchy perez was playing under pardew infact he played him alot and brought him out of the development squad

  • 21 WWSBRD // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:24 PM

Ur taking the blame for Elliot’s injury!

  • 22 catchy in norway // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:25 PM

all i can say is you see players through P45 eyes, and all the stats on Sack P45 are there for all to read.

p45 broke just about every bad record he could in those 4,5 years.

players like HBA/marv/yanga were scapegoats, both HBA and Yanga have went on to play good football again

  • 23 Blackley and Brownlie // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:26 PM

I was just about to make the point you make in your first paragraph. I’ve wanted to see us put out a strong strike partnership and Makro has done the right thing in playing Perez with Mitro. Both show great attitude and play off each other very well. However, I’ve previously expressed my doubts that these two are natural finishers and sufficiently prolific. I’m still not convinced. The aim should be at least 40 goals per season between them. I can’t see them coming anywhere close. Perez’s curling effort around the post sums him up. Great build up and link up play, easy on the eye, but no killer instinct.

  • 24 martoon // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:26 PM

Just back from the match – I thought we were a bit unlucky not to get a win but then again Stoke missed a sitter as well. However again our play was much better. Stoke should have had at least one player sent off – their centre backs got a lot of sly digs in on Mitrovic!

  • 25 firebug666 // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:26 PM

Nah this one is down to you and those that wanted to see Woody start, my hands are clean in this.

If Makro asked to be judged after 10 games, here it is. He’s done enough for me for him to warrant a further stay until January at least. Although if I owned the club, he’d be gone.

He’s trusting Colo, which is such bad judgment, it could be fatal. He should be putting this right immediately, but let’s see what he does in January. How he ever sanctioned a move for Thauvin, especially when there are other glaring priorities, I’ll never understand. Major mismanagement.

  • 34 Tuttelbom // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:51 PM

Is it only me that think Dummett was by far the poorest player on the pitch today?
We where terrorized down that side, and apart from 1 or 2 sliders Dummett looked totally out of his depths both ways.
Got to give credit to Coloccini for helping out on that side though, and the same goes for Mbemba on Janmaats side.

  • 35 JP...from The Rock // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:58 PM

Perez is my favourite Newcastle player right now. He’s such a clever player with great technique. Like someone above said if hecould improve his shooting slightly he will be much more dangerous. But he already is a great striker of the ball. The only mistake i have seen him do often is that he is in the edge of the box and wants to whip a cross and it always hits the defender infront of him. He has to learn to take a side step and then cross it when he gets into that position (he usually gets into those positions).

But the kid is young and already the first name on the team sheet for me. Great professional and a real trier that never stops trying.

  • 36 Malta Mag // Oct 31, 2015 at 6:59 PM

There is no doubt McClaren has found a system that works and once again today we failed to win through luck rather than any inappropriate system. I said at the start of the game that the next 4 games would prove whether McClaren would remain in place. I personally think he should because the style of play is progressive unlike last season when it was painful to watch. Bournemouth next week then Leicester at home and Palace away? Not easy but I see us getting some points on the board.

  • 37 benjohnsen // Oct 31, 2015 at 9:34 PM

If you look at how Newcastle performed today compared to the last 30 games I would say that this some of the more solid performance I have seen.

If Newcastle continue to play like this they will start scoring goals and win matches. To all the above who is complaining about how bad we play. Watch some of the last 30 matches and tell me if they were so much better. It is not easy to turn around a losing mentality team that Pardew and Carver created over the years. It looks like McClaren is on his way to manage that.

Also, bear in mind that Newcastle have already met Chelsea, Man United, City and Arsenal once. Team that we are not expected to get any points from. The only matches I expected more from would be against Southampton, Watford and Sunderland. Swansea and West Ham away are tough match for most teams.
