Newcastle fans have been very patient this season and again on Saturday in what turned out to be a frustrating game because we should have beaten Stoke but couldn’t get a goal – the fans stayed with the team right through the game.
The fans saw some great goalkeeping from England goalkeeper Jack Butland – who is now pushing Joe Hart for an England starting place.
Jack Butland – in inspired form on Saturday
This is what Steve McClaren said after the game:.
“We are where we deserve to be because we were not good enough in the first four or five games,” “That was when we were not creating chances and were conceding goals.”
“Now, I think everybody can see the progress we have made. As Colo was saying in the changing rooms after the game, if we keep going this way, we will be okay.”
In the first six games we had four defeats and only two draws bit since the Chelsea game we have five points from five games but should have had wins against Chelsea and Stoke – and the Sunderland game was spoiled by some poor refereeing.
So we have seen an improvement since the Chelsea game and the big let-down was at Manchester City when we disappeared for 20 minutes and conceded six goals – apart from that we played well.
🙂
McClaren refers to what captain Coloccini said after the game – this is what the Argentine, who had a solid game at center-back said to the lads in the dressing room after the game:
“It was mixed emotions on Saturday.” “We tried from the first minute to get the win.” “But we couldn’t get it because the goalkeeper was in inspired form.”
“He had an unbelievable afternoon, that was the difference.” “We tried for 90 minutes to get the win.” “We played well, got the clean sheet and created chances, there were more positive things to take away from the game.”
“We know we have played well in the last two games, perhaps we deserve more than just one point.”
“Against Stoke we played well again and we were solid. We must follow on with more of the same.” “I think the fans are happy because we are showing that we want to win games and play nice football.”
We wouldn’t say the fans are happy it’s more like they see some good football, but it’s not being rewarded with wins and 3 points.
Newcastle played good attacking football from the first whistle on Saturday and every player knew what was required of them and there was no complacency at all.
Cheick Tiote and Vurnon Anita to their credit also got the job done in central midfield – in Jack Colback’s absence.
We give credit to the fans for being very patient – that’s good but it’s also frustrating for them – and it’s now up to our players to get some wins under their belts from games like Saturday – where we were the better side.
If we can do that we should be able to move away from the relegation zone – we are currently 3rd bottom and Newcastle have never had a worse start to a season since we were formed way back in 1892.

I don’t believe we can’t get out of this.
But the manager has no illusions, and some of the players are also concerned about our inability to bag our chances (see Wijnaldum today)
They know complacency is the enemy, as we all should.
It shouldn’t be beyond our wit to combine decent football with a few results.
In the end, sixteenth would be greeted with relief and presented as some kind of triumph, and the whole shoddy process will start again.

Comment #87And what exactly are our beloved FA for ?
They had a good look at Jonny the spit Evans and Pappiss for their misdemeanours – Costa kicked the guy in the chest in petulance – tut tut – at least 4 game ban which might well be beneficial to Moanrinio who is also to be taken to Court personally by Dr. Carnerio.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.
Good luck to the good Doctor.
Chelsea striker Diego Costa could be banned for four matches after appearing to kick out at Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge. (ESPN)
But another report claims Costa will not be punished as the FA is satisfied the incident does not warrant further action. (Daily Mail)

What went before, yes i agree.
Im just giving them the chance to back up what was said last season about changing. Im oreoared to be called naive and stupid, its ok.
But Pardew leaving was the first chance for proper change in 5 years.
They hired someone they trust now by the looks of it and will back financially.
They put a full strength team out for the cup
We are playing better football now than in the previous 4 seasons
Im willing to wait, see how January goes, give the team more than just 12 games to adapt from hoofball and see where we are.
If nothing had changed from this time last season and we were being served up the same dross week in, week out then i would be agreeing with you. Im no Ashley fan, the previous seasons speak for themselves and agree he led the club into this position.
Anyway, we all see things differently, c’est la vie.

I am still waiting to see if this new leaf was anything more than a ruse to take Ashley out of the firing line.
I also hope to see the cosmetic improvements on the pitch being turned into points, at which point they will not be cosmetic anymore.
We have time. Just not as much as some seem to think.
I was concerned to see Fans’ Forum members being told that they could find the answers to questions about present policy in rather elderly minutes.
How many new leaves are they going to find in the old books?

Comment #96Wrote a faily long post before (who? me? No, can’t be) and can’t really be bothered to type it up again. The general theme was that I’m failing to understand how the club expect people to have faith and trust, when they still haven’t actually acknowledged what mistakes it is they’ve learnt from.
This isn’t about playing the blame game, it’s about understanding and accepting and actually being able to move on. Given the task at hand, and the clubs calls to have everyone on board, this isnt unreasonable to me, it just seems logical.

I made my point @41.
Then I tried to back it up with what I considered to be supporting evidence.
Since which I have had a polite discussion with two people with different views.
I won’t be calling you stupid or naive. You just have SOME different views, which you hold honestly and which I enjoy reading all the same.

It’d be ill advised to turn on the fans at this stage, I’d be shocked if he does.
Mind, I wouldn’t put it past them to blame the fans for how our season panned out last season.
Maybe instead of finding players with the right character, they should concentrate their efforts on finding fans with the right character? 🙂

If they want to draw a line under last season and not talk about it, fair enough.
Let’s see what improvement the new season holds instead…
Okay…so they don’t want to dwell on the start of the new season either?
Fair enough.
As long as they don’t say the same thing at Christmas.
I can see how they would prefer people to look forward with optimism towards things that haven’t happened, rather than have them dwelling on all the things that have.
Just wipe your memories folks. It’s all rosy up ahead…this time.

Comment #106BandB…As you know, fan treatment / involvement has been my biggest gripe with the Ashley era.
Clearly I am naive, as I still cannot get my head round the idea that if all is due to be rosy, as they are now acting correctly (after learning from these mistakes), why not do just that and draw a line under it.
A bit like last season, I question who benefits from this lack of clarity and this us and them which they refuse to put to bed.
Some may argue it’s me that wont put it to bed. I refer them back to my original post.
The matter hasn’t been put to bed, we’ve been asked to have faith, something a fair few fans don’t have left in them.

You can understand their appeal to fans’ faith in the future, for which there is no evidence, and their pleas that people forget the past, where there is plenty of evidence. Playing on peoples’ trust and faith are the classic elements of the confidence trick.
