Newcastle Make Surprise Move For Goalkeeper

12:18 pm, Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 50 Comments

There are reports today that Newcastle are making a move to bring Crystal Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni on an emergency loan deal for the game at Bournemouth on Saturday.

The experienced 36 year-old Argentine is currently being kept out of the first team by Welsh International Wayne Hennessey and maybe Newcastle are hoping their former manager Alan Pardew can do them a favor.

juliam speroni

Julian Speroni – reports Newcastle after him

At the moment Newcastle have all three senior goalkeepers – Tim Krul, Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot  – out injured and we assume the club have applied for permission to bring in a goalkeeper on an emergency loan for the game at Bournemouth.

Newcastle also have 18 year-old England U19 goalkeeper Freddie Woodman available and he played last night for the U21s in the 2-0 win at home to Aston Villa.

Speroni has been at Palace for 11 years since joining them from Dundee back in 2004 and he’s been out injured this season with a finger injury.

He has played over 500 games in his career and has 386 appearances in all competitions for Crystal Palace over the last eleven years.

If Newcastle can get Julian in he would be an excellent emergency loan signing for us.

Alan Pardew also has English goalkeeper Alex McCarthy available to him – but it’s not clear how long Newcastle would need Speroni for and there are reports that Pardew isn’t too willing to lose for Speroni for any length of time.

Comments welcome.

Only Newcastle could sign a keeper with an injured finger ?

  • 6 Essex Geordie Bill // Nov 3, 2015 at 12:27 PM

Canny GK, didn’t he refuse to wear a new track suit bottom as his old one was lucky.

Repost as I do like my comments to have some air time, even if they are often rubbish and strewn with grammatical errors due to a gremlin in my keyboard!!

A big thank you to Everton, Southampton and Spurs for doing us a big favour at the weekend, pity we are having to rely on others though.

It’s up to our lot to take advantage of these results staring with a win at Bournemouth.

I was watching some of those games and was thinking none of those teams have as much skill as our team not even Everton.

Could be just my black and white tinted glasses though.

  • 7 Jib // Nov 3, 2015 at 12:27 PM

If this is true , it probably has more to do with the links between Steve Parish and Mike Ashley.
The link that got Pardew the job in the first place.

    LR 32

Maybe the team was just too hyped in the other seasons

  • 9 Polarboy // Nov 3, 2015 at 12:38 PM

Speroni is a very good keeper on his day, we could do a lot worse if this is true. In fact Speroni is probably a better all round keeper than Krul given Krul’s dodgy distribution.

  • 10 TroubledToon // Nov 3, 2015 at 12:41 PM

Ok, that’s one pint too many for me…
Thought I just read that we’re interested in getting Speroni on loan!!!
Phew.. I gotta lay off the booze for awhile!!!

What we’ve had before in Remy and Ba were out and out goal scorers. We curently don’t have one, or not a proven one anyway. Potentially Cisse but his form and injury record the last 2 years isn’t good enough.

That’s the biggest difference, without a top goalscorer it’s dofficult to win games when not performing well, which really is a problem given how incocistent we are.

You always say we played terrible when we came 5th (I personally don’t think it was as bad as you made out but that’s a different issue). The difference was even when we did play bad then you could count on Ba to slot a fair few half chances away and win us points.

  • 12 Polarboy // Nov 3, 2015 at 12:45 PM

@TroubledToon. Does that mean you think it would be a good thing or a bad thing.

  • 13 Average_Contents // Nov 3, 2015 at 12:52 PM

    How embarrassing if true.

Scrounging from a, let’s face it, little club who just happen to have our ex-manager.

    How pathetic could you get….

  • 14 TroubledToon // Nov 3, 2015 at 12:58 PM

It’d b terrible. We’re trying to get in sum1 who hasn’t played for a considerable amount of time. Plus he’s been out through injury. N tbh, Speroni is a hit n miss. Mite have a gud game mebbe 1 in10.
N most importantly, I wudnt want Pardew to get the satisfaction!!!

  • 15 Essex Geordie Bill // Nov 3, 2015 at 12:58 PM

AV don’t see the problem, any storm in a port as it were.

I don’t actually believe the rumour but could turn out to be a good move true.

  • 16 TroubledToon // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:00 PM

Wait and watch my friend. Every time we think the club cudnt get more ridiculous, off they go n prove us wrong…

  • 17 firebug666 // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:01 PM

The season we finished 5th, we played an attacking 4-3-3 formation which suited the players we had, for some unknown reason the following season the inept one changed the formation to 4-2-3-1, and we have struggled ever since.

McClaren has us playing 4-4-1-1 now with mixed results, we are still conceding too many goals, but we are creating more chances to score ourselves, just lacking that cutting edge, that little bit of luck that we all hope will come sooner rather than later.

McClaren was not my choice to take us forward, but he is what we got, and things look better on the pitch even though we still need those results to go our way.

I don’t think we will get relegated this season, and believe we will kick on to a better season next year, though still mid table.

I am quietly confident that results will turn our way pretty soon.

On Riviere, he plays his best football on the left side of a front three, so maybe there is still hope for him to come good for us.

  • 18 Polarboy // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:05 PM

@TroubledToon. I think you are underestimating Speroni, he’s definitely not as hit and miss as you’re making out, no more hit and miss than Krul was before he got injured.

  • 19 firebug666 // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:06 PM

    AC @13

Totally agree mate, the last person we should go cap in hand to is the inept one.

The are better keepers out there who would jump at the chance for some first team action in the Premiership.

  • 20 Polarboy // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:07 PM

@TroubledToon. Oh yeah, as for Pardew who gives a sh*t. The tw*t is clerly getting enough satisfaction from Palace’s position compared to ours, not taking a keeper off them would just be cutting our nose off to spite our face.

  • 21 Polarboy // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:10 PM

@firebug666. Apart from Valdes who we don’t know what the story is with regard to him falling out with Van Gaal, who is currently a better third choice keeper than Speroni? Keep in mind it is the third choice keepers that we have to pick from.

  • 22 John Tudor // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:10 PM

where can i get me a pair of those specs, boots have sold out

  • 23 Ibizatoon // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:12 PM

Why not? Bit of sun, bottle of Peroni, what’s not to like?

Although, I thought it was Italian, not Argentinian. Still, small details.

Firebug…From memory, we only really played the good 4-3-3 that season for about 6 games. Then for some reason we reverted to something else and our form dipped somewhat.

That’s from memory anyway. Plus I seem to remember reading pages and pages of people cursing Pardew for changing after it had worked so well.

Wasn’t it the same time Benny came back in to the team?

Twas a nice month or so.

  • 24 funguswatty // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:13 PM

All they need to do is Ask Steve Harper sure he wu jump at the chance noes club and players well

  • 25 Ibizatoon // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:13 PM

Polarboy…I don’t know much about him, but are you really saying Palaces 3rd choice keeper is as good, if not better than our No.1?

  • 26 firebug666 // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:15 PM

Out of the entire premier league, there has to be better keepers, who are younger more agile, and make less mistakes.

If an experienced keeper is third choice at a club a keeper who is 29 – 35 years and has all that experience to be only third choice, something has to be wrong.

You said it yourself re Valdes.

  • 27 John Tudor // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:17 PM

    pironni another bottling crock

  • 28 Polarboy // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:31 PM

@Ibizatoon. Yep, he was their first choice until he got injured and stats wise is usually at the top end of keepers despite playing for a Palace side who weren’t riding as high as they are now.

@firebug666. 36 isn’t that old for a keeper, he has a few seasons left in him yet. Speroni is still seen as arguably Palace’s best keeper when and has been voted player of the year 4 times, three of those times in a row. Valdes looked like a typical Spanish league keeper to me, can be brilliant but erratic, the exception is De Gea. He also doesn’t have even a tenth of Speroni’s experience in English football.

  • 29 reilly // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:31 PM

    cheaper option.
    doubt this is maccas choice.

  • 30 Toonfan8 // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:32 PM

what about to try this formation:
    sissoko… jong……perez
maybee the most offensive squad for us and SMC should try De Jong, maybee he will bring that killer instinct………….

  • 31 Ibizatoon // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:33 PM

Polarboy…As I said, never really seen much of him so can’t comment too much. Injuries or not though, pretty damning if he’s better than Krul.

  • 32 Jib // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:37 PM

Peroni looks about the best of a pretty dire bunch !

  • 33 Polarboy // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:37 PM

@Ibizatoon. Palace weirdly probably have the best selection of keepers in the league. Hennessy is a great keeper and McCarthy is an England international of course. There are people who believe given time Speroni would become first choice again.

  • 34 reilly // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:45 PM

lets hope the club make the right choice or it could come back and bite us big time.

  • 35 Roosta // Nov 3, 2015 at 1:47 PM

So, De Jong looks sharper, well that would not take much, hes got his money for nowt so far, absolutely bot all.

  • 36 catchy in norway // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:05 PM

That all we had though , a goal scorer , we bypassed the MF straight up to Ba ,
And the guy who said we played 433 and it worked , didn’t watch us very well, ba was wasted out on the left, hardly touched the ball or contributed , we played well in that system for about 6 games, in which the ball was played with Cisse, HBA , Cabaye.

Remy is/ was a good goal scorer, but we never played a team game with him, he did a lot himself.

Right now we are a team, we play the ball all over the pitch , we just need more luck in front of goal, last week colo had a good chance , this week Jamal had a good chance , Gini is weighing in with goals, Mitro is scoring , and it won’t be long before both sissoko and Perez are in really in the goals , Perez has one, I know

  • 37 ilovetoon8788 // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:25 PM

I think sdj is not cut out for the epl. He looks so slow an unfit. His position in the pitch is also questionable.

He’s another fail signing like marveaux. I think Siem will be shipped out in January. We have too many 10s and his the worst of the lot. Expect him gone.

  • 38 Thump // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:30 PM

@ilovetoon: Of course he looks slow and unfit – he hasn’t played in a year and a bit, and let’s be honest, pace was never a huge part of his game.

He can, however, pick out a pass. It all depends on how Schteve wants to play him.

  • 39 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:32 PM

Good article by Luke Edwards in the Telegraph, which sums it up for me.

  • 40 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:36 PM

SDJ thinks Premier League clubs and NUFC should allow him to stroll about. He needs a reality check. He’s not Pirlo.

  • 41 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:42 PM

We’ve been told by many on here what a great player SDJ is. Just start him and give him time they say because we’re missing a trick. Let’s ask Jib.

Jib, you’re one of the clever football pundits that form the majority on this blog, you say. What are you and your fellow aficiondos saying on SDJ?

  • 43 Ibizatoon // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:51 PM

    Blackley…Do you mean this article?

Sums it up very well (imo). Although he seems to have upset a few folk in the comments section.

I don’t see any mention of “old man Carr” mind.

  • 44 Tsunki // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:52 PM

Ha yeah top pundit alright, is Ray. Knows all there is about Real Valllllllllllecano does Ray. Who’ve they got up front? Oosterhuis and Borg oh no wait a minute, error 404 🙂

  • 45 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:55 PM

    That’s the one, thanks.

No mention of the old man. Hahaha. He must be saving that one for another article.

I don’t see why Marveux is getting so much sh!te. The few times he’s actually got onto the pitch he’s looked ok. You can’t criticise a player who never plays.

  • 48 Jib // Nov 3, 2015 at 2:57 PM

The blog had a good natter about SdJ a few articles back , strangely enough the article about him with his photo , scroll back and read it , it ain’t rocket science 🙂
