Bust Up Will Only Help Newcastle Get Their Man

2:28 pm, Thursday, November 5th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 112 Comments

Andros Townsend seems like he will almost certainly leave Tottenham in January after the altercation he had with a fitness coach at the end of the 3-1 home win against Aston Villa on Monday night at White Hart Lane.

What made things worse was that after the altercation Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino went public and said that Townsend would not be allowed to train with the first team squad this week and he will not be in the squad for tonight’s Europa League game against Anderlecht.

andros townsend

Andros Townsend – bust up at Tottenham

This is what Mauricio said after the altercation:

“Andros Townsend did not train with the group and he is not available to be selected.”   t is because of Monday, if you behave the wrong way you always need to pay.”

“It is always my decision when he is available again to be part of the squad, discipline for me is very important.”

Andros was obviously very frustrated that he didn’t get an outing against Aston Villa which caused the altercation.

Newcastle were linked with Townsend in the summer and if he is indeed a target for us in January there’s now a good chance we could get him to Tyneside, although there will be other clubs interested in the England International.

For his own good Andros will want to move to a side where he will get regular football to give him every chance to make the England squad for the European 2016 finals in France next summer.

The 24 year-old 10 times capped England International would be a good acquisition for Newcastle – maybe even on loan through the end of the season.

It’s clear Newcastle will be very active in the transfer market in January and only today we have been linked with Dutch International winger Anwar El Ghazi.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Ed…Surely you’re not suggesting that it’s clear we’ll be active in the January market, due to all of the links to players? 🙂

If so, you may want a trip down blog memory lane.

I’d say it’s clear that we need to be active this window and we probably / hopefully should be.

  • 2 Tsunki // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:32 PM

Pete Townsend more likely to start for us. Meh.

  • 3 John Tudor // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:32 PM

    try palarse

  • 5 Tsunki // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:33 PM

Let’s keep looking at forwards and wingers. All this talk of goalies, defenders and the like is pointless..

  • 6 Ibizatoon // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:37 PM

Tsunki…Pointless you say. Do you not see our performances are improving?

Oh wait, that’s not what you’re talking about. Don’t mind me. Just hear to do some scheduled maintenance.

Seriously. I’m getting worse by the day.

  • 8 Blackley and Brownlie // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:44 PM

No. Please not Townsend. We’ve just bought one duff winger.

  • 9 Jan Stavik // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:44 PM

The English Obertan? No thanks ??

  • 10 Mister Tuff // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:48 PM

No thanks to Townsend – he had a few decent games last season -which has not been replicated this season. Plus fighting with staff is not a quality we should import.

  • 11 Shadow_Shearer // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:49 PM

A very good player, but I don’t see him suiting our system. Our wingers need to play box to box role. That’s why we have sissoko & wijnaldum on our wings, they can play that role

  • 12 Mister Tuff // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:52 PM

I’d like to see Benny be selected for France for the friendly with England. Interesting to see how he plays. He’s scored 7 in 12 starts this season which seems decent.

  • 13 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Nov 5, 2015 at 2:56 PM

Who the bloody hell would want him.
It’s defenders and a creative midfield player we NEED.
and someone who can whip in a FREE kick

anyway who is or penalty take if we ever get one!!!!!!!

    …well done to him!

    hibbitt…but he’s English? 😉

  • 19 Mister Tuff // Nov 5, 2015 at 3:59 PM

jesper -indeed. Reports are that he is playing well. Looking back it must take a player about a year to be de- Pardewed.
For me it is a bonus to see something magical -that other players just cannot do – despite trying.

  • 20 lesh // Nov 5, 2015 at 3:59 PM

We know you’re Carr’s man on the ground in Scandinavia – what do you make of Emre Mor who’s said to have ManU and Liverfool sniffing around him.

Now in complete confidence Jesper, is Mor going to join us in January?

As said earlier, your opinion will be treated as very hush hush, between you and me, it’ll go no further.

You probably told everyone a while ago, but how much did the bairn raise on his Snowdon climb?

He’s a tough little cookie – even the easy Snowdon climb’s anything but.

Remy Garde’s first interview in the next hour on SSN

  • 25 JDdubai // Nov 5, 2015 at 4:15 PM

Townsend, god no. Lower-mid tsable player, we need to be aiming higher if we look to progress.

We need a CB at Mbemba quality, plus who is around 6″4 too.
A Cm like Cabaye, who can do the hard work but also can pick a pass and offer a threat going forwards.
    A CF with pace

Get these 3 in and we will be looking good. Other positions can be fixed later, but the spine of the team needs the work the most.
    Bellamy(mk2) whoever that is…….

  • 26 nut meg // Nov 5, 2015 at 4:17 PM

Townsend again! NO thank you,not even for free!

  • 27 Munster Mag // Nov 5, 2015 at 4:23 PM

Jib, I dont think Garde will save Villa. I dont think so anyway. It wudnt surprise me if he is gone at the end of the season. As for the Pardew haters, well I guess if ye couldnt give him a shred of credit for fifth and a decent run in europe at the time, ye aint gonna give him anything now. As I have said before he is a mid level manager, and do not wish to elevate him beyond that. Still, those who said he would relegate them last season were make to look a bit stupid werent you ? And it aint looking like relegation this season either for the guy you think is so useless! He’s not useless lads, you just called it wrong. He’s average. Anyway he was right – 5th was getting above ourselves and does not match the full history of NUFC. And yes, I’m glad he’s gone and am pleased to see the style of play we have now. Bear in mind though, that apparently Steve talked a lot of guff at Forest too.

Munster – you cannot bloody resist a King Percy post – just cannot understand your love in with him.
I picture you dancing around the Emerald Isle wearing a pearly king suit with a Chas n’ Dave song in the background, eating a large slice of eel pie in one hand and a King Percy blow up doll in the other.

  • 32 TroubledToon // Nov 5, 2015 at 4:58 PM

Teddy Sheringham has re-registered as a player at the age of 49… I’d rather take him than Townsend

  • 33 AncientC // Nov 5, 2015 at 4:59 PM

Why should Pardew get any credit for the season we finished 5th. From what I recall we were outplayed by nearly every team that season and won games against the run of play.

It was backs to the wall defending and riding our luck, with Ba and then Cisse having a fluke of a season. If we had played good football, made good substitutions and looked the part, then Pardew would have been deserving of credit.

I certainly will not miss watching the side being dominated by relegation candidate teams… Pardew’s luck ran out, which explains why he never came close to reproducing a 6 finish again. It is there on paper, a complete ‘one off.’

  • 34 catchy in norway // Nov 5, 2015 at 5:04 PM

It’s very funny how a league table can make it look like you play good football or bad football based on positions

Deluded p45 fans take it upon themselves to tell us we played well because we finished fifth, other than 6 games where 3 players played well we were pants.

    Talk about re writing history

  • 35 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Nov 5, 2015 at 5:11 PM

There is no love in. I just think the criticism has to be accurate thats all. For example his free kick training was crap. Fair point. But i’m sorry chaps, 5th is 5th even in a weak division. Just as 17th was crap.

It just goes to show how deep runs the hatred for AP amongst some of the posters here (have I mentioned the usual suspects before ?) when they find it impossible to give a manager credit for taking his team to 5th.position in what has been called the hardest league there is.
It was ‘because some of the top teams were off their game that season’ or ‘ some wonder goals’ or ‘a season of lucky results’, and all this in spite of the plaudits he and the team received from the vast majority of the football world, including a few trophies, in recognition of what he had achieved with a squad costing a mere fraction of those around him in the premiership table.
I find it hard to imagine a manager of another premiership club getting similar stick from supporters, even a barmy few, for what by any standards was a top achievement in season 2011/2012.

The instigator of years of failed derbies? The endless bilge he spewed out for his paymasters? The throwing of cup competitions and the subsequent public executions of the youngsters he threw into those teams? I don’t get it. He was a hero. Still is imo.

Jesper in case you didnt notice football is a sport and winning is what counts. So winning enough games to get 5th has to count. Sadly for the pardew loon brigade, this statistic in an inconvenience to their argument. As is the under funding when we needed it, and not anita. Ben arfa? Was that the same bloke who ran less than the keeper and ballsed up at every club? Clearly pardews fault then. Mind you psrdew was also crap to these guys when hba was doing well so as usual, no intelligence ti their arguments. To repeat for the umpteenth time, pardew was not great. He wasnt good. But that doesnt mean he was the disaster that some dimwits insist. Do i want him back? Nope.

The sad aspect of the disparaging of the manager for the finish is that it also disparages the team, dismissing had fought wins as ‘lucky’ ‘flukey’ etc.etc.
I hope that the likes of Willo and Krul who still play for us, and those who have moved on are aware that it’s a small minority of barmies who rubbish what was possibly the pinnacle of their premiership careers.

  • 65 GeordieTwo // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:07 PM

We are clearly in a relegation battle until we prove we are good enough for the Prem by getting enough points. So far we have taken 7 from 33 (21%). No excuses please. Those are the facts. A win at Bournemouth would be very welcome. Then we have a stretch of more difficult matches. This isn’t going to be easy with such a sad sack defense. Anyone who things we’re going to finish top 8 (like McLaren) is completely mad.

I remember being very excited by our fifth place finish. Many good goals and wins. But was it ever going to be repeated given our owner’s bizarre behavior? My answer would be no. We got rid of every decent striker who came to us and several excellent players at other positions. We didn’t build on the fifth place at all. We just continued to do nothing, followed by a couple of windows of buying kids.

  • 68 Ian Toon // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:12 PM

Munster- I see that Mr Tuff and other “usual suspects” are still making as much sense as proposing ” jumpers for goal posts”. His stereotyping generally is puerile and not relevant to most things NUFC. On the cockney point I think he’s confusing jellied eels which in itself is an outdated stereotype.
Also freedom of information, whilst applying this to the fans forum it doesn’t dictate how questions are answered. The way our meetings are conducted is know different from PL clubs generally. Nobody wants to vote on the colour of the club shirt , we want to vote for the people who decide the colour of the club shirt.
Toon fans are not alone in being alive to what is progress in football terms. Finishing 5th was a major achievement which should have been built on. We clearly don’t want token gestures but inancial commitment and the signs are good towards improving the squad in January. My understanding is that this commitment forms the basis of Macca’s job description and one of the initial obstacles to him being appointed earlier.

  • 69 Ian Toon // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:15 PM

    inancial= financial.

  • 70 cyprus // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:18 PM

It’s been years since I’ve enjoyed watching NUFC. I don’t enjoy our position, true but don’t you hope something is happening? Something positive? Hope so, mate. Of course, no guarantees, I get it.

  • 71 GeordieTwo // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:21 PM

I hope that’s correct Ian Toon @68. You would probably admit we’ve had a lot of disappointments and broken promises over the years from Ashley. I see a dismal defense that really isn’t Prem standard at all. At other positions at least we have some promising players. What can be said about Saylor and Colo (well past it after a few very good years)? Mbemba looks like a good one at last but we have so many failures. Dummett will never be a decent left back. No cover at RB. Problems in goal. The list goes on and on.

  • 72 GeordieTwo // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:23 PM

I would agree cyprus mate. I still hope we can build something good. But will Ashley allow it to happen or will he just sell on the best players we bring in? I’m thinking of Wij, Mitro, Perez etc. If the price gets high enough he’ll sell them and start over again. I just don’t believe in him at all.

  • 73 SPRINGY // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:28 PM

    evening all,
not convinced on townsend…a alright player when fit but very rarely fit for very long so need a better option then him in that area…and that area is not a priority for me right now….top 8 will never happen this season we are a quarter of the way thru the season with 7 points….that’s relegation if current form pans out the way the 1st quarter of the season has….although we’ve played well recently in spells…im not convinced we’ll get anything at Bournemouth unfortunately…..hope I’m wrong!

  • 74 Mag52 // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:28 PM

Neither do I Geordie 2, neither do I.

  • 75 Ian Toon // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:29 PM

My abiding memory of the Toon under Pardew was the 3-0 annihilation of Man U at SJP. I remember being annoyed at The Guardian headline suggesting it was because of a Phil Jones error. It was early in January 2012 and we had not beaten them at SJP since 2001.
Don’t try telling me that our fans at large didn’t think we would have kicked on because I remember the atmosphere and post match buzz.
    We want that feeling back.

  • 76 SPRINGY // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:33 PM

selling the players wont be the problem… stopping them wanting to leave will be the major problem if we are struggling at the end of the season….there’ll b some wanting to jump ship in January!

  • 77 Ian Toon // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:34 PM

Geordie Two- Hope everything is good in your world. We can only hope so- we’ve suffered enough. It’s going to be a massive haul this season but thereafter why not. I am certainly more comfortable with Macca having a big say in sales/ signings.

  • 78 GeordieTwo // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:34 PM

Most good clubs start by trying to build the best defense possible. Even Arsenal have recognized they had to do something. Good defenders for me are the hardest players to come by. But you can’t just ignore those positions. It seems we like having one decent attacking RB (Debuchey followed by Janmaat) but are willing to take huge chances at LB. Why? And we sign one decent CB (Colo) is it 6 or 7 years or so ago now and then do nothing about reinforcements except foreign youngsters. Again why? Willo was hopeless. Colo is past it. Saylor is a sick note. Dummett is a poor LB. Anybody can see these things. Why can’t the club?

    I am mate,
Sorry to disagree. Even that great result came from hoof (rather, direct,ok) football. I prefer our game now, with those four up front, combining. Like I told G2, I know we are in a dire position. But at least there’s room for hope…

  • 83 GeordieTwo // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:44 PM

Things are decent here Ian Toon mate. I hope for nothing but the best for club. It just doesn’t look too good when I glance at the table after 8 1/2 years of Ashley. Even McLaren clearly wasn’t that keen to come to us and it’s likely Garde turned us down among others. The structure of the club is still very poor as far as I can see. Charnley needs to be replaced by someone far better. Carr is surely nearing the end and that will be a key position to fill as well. Is Ashley up to it? He hasn’t been so far.

  • 85 BandB // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:47 PM

Would you like to confirm to me just how much of the blame for the club’s current woes you lay directly at the door of “the usual suspects”?

  • 86 GeordieTwo // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:48 PM

Good points by you Springy mate @76 and 81. All the uncertainty and instability over the last few years have destroyed a lot of the good feelings generated by the fifth place. Now people are back to distrusting Ashley and his motives, and rightly so. Standing there in the summer and saying he’s not leaving until we win something is just laughable to me. He hasn’t got a clue how to win something.

  • 87 BandB // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:48 PM

It seems to be quite a lot, judging by the amount of time you spend denigrating them.

  • 88 Ian Toon // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:49 PM

Season 2011-2012 our average home attendance for the 19 games in the PL League at SJP was 49, 936.

  • 89 cyprus // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:51 PM

Disagree again. The entertainers built from the front, not the back and it was an exhilarating ride. We lost glory in details.

Of course, ideally, you need a good defense, yes. But it’s fun scoring for…fun.

  • 90 Ian Toon // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:53 PM

Geordie Two- We do need to start winning the 6 pointer games – starting on Saturday lunchtime.

  • 91 GeordieTwo // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:54 PM

Haha! Ok cyprus mate. I love high scoring football as well but we aren’t exactly the entertainers these days. And Ashley wants to talk about winning something. For that we will need a good defense.

  • 92 GeordieTwo // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:56 PM

Absolutely Ian Toon. That game is crucial. If we lose and I see another set of comments about how well we played and how we deserved better it will confirm that our supporters have become accustomed to losing and then excuse making. If we lose that match I would predict we’ll remain in the relegation fight for the rest of the season.

  • 93 JamesToon // Nov 5, 2015 at 8:03 PM

I think we need to keep Armstrong in January. He’s on form and his confidence will be sky high, put him straight in the team if either Mitro or Pérez get injured

  • 94 cyprus // Nov 5, 2015 at 8:11 PM

So Europa league, Apoel conceded in the first minute. My prediction: Ketspaia team will put 5 past the opposition, away. Bet it if you need the money. Good night all.

Above is an interesting picture of beermonkey and me training with the 2 man wheeled bobsled. Ignore the train in behind. We may have gotten onto a rail line briefly. Harrumph…..

That’s me (the good looking one) on the left.

  • 98 Jib // Nov 5, 2015 at 8:32 PM

We are being linked with Fabio da Silva the Cardiff City left back , the twin brother of Rafael who went from Man Utd to Lyon , still only 25 with loads of experience , could be OK ?

  • 99 Rotonda heights // Nov 5, 2015 at 8:38 PM

Has to be said you do appear to be one endless monotonous drone.
Anyone who prefers pardew over martinez is in serious need of a personality transplant.

Pardew was given credit for his brief good spells. Trouble is they were just that, very brief.

  • 102 SPRINGY // Nov 5, 2015 at 8:54 PM

the season we finished 5th….as good as the season was ..there were still a few games we were very lucky to win…..but u make ya own luck over the course of the season and finish where u deserve…despite some heavy defeats finishing 5th was where we deserved to finish….scary for this season on that if that’s the case!

    Mag52 // Nov 5, 2015 at 7:04 PM

The sad aspect of the disparaging of the manager for the finish is that it also disparages the team, dismissing had fought wins as ‘lucky’ ‘flukey’ etc.etc.
I hope that the likes of Willo and Krul who still play for us, and those who have moved on are aware that it’s a small minority of barmies who rubbish what was possibly the pinnacle of their premiership careers.

A sadder ( yes that’s a word, Ray) aspect mag52 has to be your flawed logic, as gaining 5th place despite Pardew’s archaic concept of tactics is surely a credit to them which many Toon fans applaud them for, and only wish upon them further success as delivered by a more substantial coach, who by the way, gladly entertained the presence of one of the worst coaching teams ever to embed itself at the club, and who helped hamper their aspirations no end.

  • 104 Tsunki // Nov 5, 2015 at 9:51 PM

And I concur with Jesper Re the Pardew Years- whilst I remember the Man U ( walking away from the ground soaked through but laughing like a kid) , Liverpool, Chelsea, Citeh escapades fondly, they were joyful in the main because of their surprising nature, but extremely rare as punctuation of the most concurrent series of dross served up in many a season.

  • 105 Tsunki // Nov 5, 2015 at 10:06 PM

Ray @100 it means that they need to get ‘Real’ he he he geddit?

  • 106 toonking // Nov 5, 2015 at 10:14 PM

Whilst pardew’s were themselves boring it was managing to get us those result. Entertaining football itself does not guarentee the results, ask the newcastle team 12 points ahead of 2nd place the blackpool team we saw here a few years ago and now this team.

Why would people be saying our next fixture against bournmoth is a must win game considering these fans have all got this entertaining football?

Pardew himself isn’t a top class manager but he’s not this lower division manager so many of that anti pardew brigade call him and if he was then even someone like mac should be winning more games than he has been given the fact pardew managed to finish in the top 10 during 2 of he’s 3 full spells as manager, the only spell he failed was of course than europa league season where newcastle had an injury record two times as bad as of the team with the next worst.

  • 107 toonking // Nov 5, 2015 at 10:16 PM

what you need to do is start having so chats with that man catchy because her’s the one who sometimes causes these debates to get to serious especisally given the fact he is still giving mac a huge backing.

  • 109 Tsunki // Nov 5, 2015 at 10:24 PM

In the end, time will expose Pardew’s quality, so maybe we should leave old father time to do his thing.

Why Remi could never work at SJP

  • 111 Munster Mag // Nov 5, 2015 at 10:44 PM

Rotunda you need a lobotomy. I didnt say Pardew was a better manager than Martinez, but that Martinez was overrated . All I have ever said re Pardew, if you read and listened rather than spouted , was that he was blamed for too much and was given grief here for everything and anything, even in good times. He was a middling, or slightly worse manager, not a useless one. Is it no wonder the “london media ” laughed at NUFC fans for their high expectations. He was lampooned non stop. Just as well he didnt relegate us, or he might have been lynched. Martinex playes better football than Pardew, but I dont think Everton will be ahead of Palace at the end of the season. Either way, there isnt much between the clubs, but Martinex is foreign , and that helps in terms of sexiness.

  • 112 Munster Mag // Nov 5, 2015 at 10:56 PM

Fair point Tsunki, believe it or not I like it when Palace lose !
